Our Little Product Category Has Grown Up
It seems like just yesterday smartwatches were still in their infant stage. Tech companies were rushing to fill their watches with the most features, the best apps, and the most gaudy straps. Then people figured out that smartwatches are good for some things, like getting phone and text alerts or tracking fitness, and not the appropriate device for other features, like trading stocks.
The 3Plus Swipe C indicates an industry reaching maturity. It’s got the features you actually need, like a 3-axis accelerometer for fitness tracking, and not a bunch of extra features you don’t need like the ability to check Tinder on your wrist. It’s like pour-over coffee – as simple as possible while still delivering the primary benefit. Or one of those blenders you can tell is fancy because it only has one setting.
The lack of a high-end (energy-gulping) processor in this smart-wrist-thing means it’s small, and the simplicity means you’re not learning a series of swipe gestures to check the time. Plus, we’re selling it for super cheap.
Usually we have a lot of snarky things to say about the crap we sell, but today we’re snarkless. If you’ve held out on the watch/fitness band trend until now, this is a dang good place to start. And at this price if you decide you hate it, oh well. If you already have a fancier smartwatch but want to try something simpler, now’s your chance.
It’s bittersweet to see our little smartwatch industry grow up. Sure, it was frustrating at times to deal with the little guy’s absurd over-hype and feature overload, but we’re going to miss those early days – we won’t have them again until the next smartcraze.
