You’ve already ruined Christmas.

Have you heard about the hot new must-have rolling into all the best stockings this Christmas? We mean the BB-8, the Sphero-with-a-head based on the lovable droid from the upcoming Star Wars previews (and presumably the actual movie). But it’s sold out. If you can manage to brawl your way up the waiting list, or pay out the nose for one on eBay, your kids will adore you for the rest of December, at least.

So now what? Well, here’s Ollie. It’s also made by the apparent time-travelers from the future at Sphero. It doesn’t have is a massive, beloved, iconic film franchise behind it. Or a mysterious floating head. You won’t get the same immediate BANG of crazed gratitude come Christmas morn.

But it’s got a few things going for it in the long-term playability department. It’s faster than either Sphero or BB-8. It’s more fun to race. It can handle steeper ramps and rougher terrain. And its cylindrical two-wheeled body can execute tricks and spins that not even BB-8 can handle. Like this, see:

No doubt, BB-8 is THE hot techy toy of our time. And you probably missed it. But when BB-8 settles into a comfortable retirement as the awesomest paperweight in your office, you’ll still be playing with Ollie. Think of it like this: you probably keep your Star Wars figures in a case, but you’ll always play with your Lego. Ollie isn’t collectible. He’s just fun.

Of course, you could give your kids both Ollie and BB-8, if you can find a BB-8. And if you want to make the rest of us look like really awful parents. Jerk.
