Dusk till Dawn

Last time we sold this, @mamajoan commented:

I love overnight oats but you gotta have chia seeds in them for the correct texture in my opinion. When I make them at home it’s old-fashioned oats, Greek yogurt, milk, fruit, and chia seeds. It’s so good, easy to put together, and even my autistic teen with food sensory issues loves them.

These kits look like basically just oatmeal with protein powder added, which I can make myself for much cheaper. But I do see that they could be great for someone who isn’t used to making themselves breakfast.

Now, just to be clear, we agree: the homemade oats described above sound way better than something you make by emptying a packet into a jar with some milk to rest in your fridge overnight.

Also, and this might blow some minds here, making pizza with a nice stretchable dough, a sauce made from stewed heirloom tomatoes, freshly ground cheeses, and some crumbled local sausage? That will be a bit tastier than cracking open one of those single-serve Lean Cuisines. And it might even be cheaper, too, in terms of cost-per-serving.

Our point is: prepackaged stuff is rarely going to be as good or as cheap in the long run as cooking from scratch (or near enough to it). But mamajoan’s final point might be the most important: “I do see that they could be great for someone who isn’t used to making themselves breakfast.”

And we would add another category too: someone who is used to making breakfast for themselves but just didn’t have time this once, or it simply slipped their mind. After all, there’s nothing worse than brushing your teeth and then realizing, dangit, you forgot to do the prep you needed to do to have a good breakfast the next morning. With some of these in the pantry, you can run downstairs, load up a jar, shake it, and go to sleep knowing you’ll have something to fill your belly.

Also, the jars are glass and reusable. Did we mention that?

In short: they might not be perfect, but we’d say they’re tasty enough for how easy they are to make. And they’re cheaper than you’ll find elsewhere. So get some if you want a simple breakfast option on hand.
