the orange coats are coming, the orange coats are coming!!
27at least, that’s what it says on this mysterious box i got from @sillyheathen
in order to gauge the size of this box, i’ve added a dog to the picture. as you can see, the box is approximately half a dog in size.
after receiving said box, i informed @sillyheathen that it might be a couple days since my girlfriend wanted to do the unboxing with me. and so, we waited.
finally, it was time to see what evil spirits and horrors laid within the box of orange.
what’s this? bubble wrap and west coast air pillows! i burst open an air pillow. it smells of fish and hippies. the next step is to carefully remove the bubble wrap and pillows. the boy proceeds to jump on the air pillows because LOUD NOISES.
the dog is not fucking impressed. oh well, let’s continue down our journey.
it’s an orange card and a very orange IRK bag. i’m sensing a theme here.
holy hell… there’s a lot of orange in there. my eyes need a minute to recuperate. we carefully remove each item. many "holy fuck"s were uttered. also, make sure you check the pockets! because cool shit resides within.
holy o-fucking-rangeness batman! here’s a full list.
screaming goat with a felt (?) meh blanket - video to come
another goat with orange meh blanket
gummy oranges
orange gummy bears

burnt orange mug
ORANGE socks - caps lock was required due to their orangeness
‘sorry in advance’ socks - orange flower to keep with the theme
Cinders orange shower gel - gf claims this is high quality stuff. i’m expecting her to steal it as some point. she’s like that.
Blood orange sorbet - but don’t eat it… it’s bodywash
orange eco-straws - will go well with orange soda
natural sponge for scrubbing dishes - least orange thing in the box
dried mango slices
good earth tea bag - this is the girlfriend’s favorite tea. i assume she’ll also steal this. she’s rude like that.
tazo wild sweet orange tea
apricot fruit rollups - i had no idea anyone even made fruit rollups anymore!
literal orange post-its
more orange post-its
thank you farmer clay mask
and now, we get to the crazy stuff. magnets. like… really. awesome. magnets.
here’s all of them in one pic. when @sillyheathen said something about sending a magnet, i complete did not expect this! these are just amazing! and, she literally took the orange coat pic and turned it into a magnet.
fucking magnets! is there anything they can’t do??
many many many thanks to @sillyheathen for this fucking amazing package. ZERO regrets here!

Fucking fantastic.
@RiotDemon orange you glad it’s fucking fantastic?

Fuck, that’s great!
What can I say? I got a little carried away. I had most of the things in the house so I’m not sure what that says about me… It was really fun putting it all together. I’m really glad you’re now sufficiently supplied with orange.
/giphy orange forever
@sillyheathen this was well beyond “a little” carried away. your house must be just filled with random orange items. thank you!!
@carl669
You could say I have a thing for the colors blue and orange. I have since I was small. No this was not staged. This is me nursing a hangover in real time.

@sillyheathen
We’re the sorry in advance socks custom made by you too? Or where did you find them? I have a thing for socks, I like the roses on those.
@compunaut
Something is broken with the string of texts. It can’t pull back a response for some reason. Just change your word(s).
@Star2236 they’re from BlueQ. I love their gear. Lots of funny and inappropriate socks and kitchen towels etc.
Snicker, snort. 🦺 Snort.
Over the sillyheathen
@carl669 Also I can verify that the tea makes an amazing cocktail! I love adding seltzer and vodka to it or Prosecco. Also the lollipops are supposed to be for tea. They’re orange blossom honey stir sticks. Also I’m slightly obsessed with drying fruit. You’re welcome.
@sillyheathen
Is that watermelon in there? I’ve never had dried watermelon, sounds good. Does drying your own fruit taste better than store bought kind?
@sillyheathen i appreciate you taking vodka into account when sending the tea. this sounds like it’d be amazing on a hot day. so, not knowing anything about loose tea, how much water would i use to brew up the entire bag you sent?
@Star2236 it’s the only way I can afford it. My three kids are like locusts. I grow a ton a fruits and veg but buy lots of fruit when it’s on sale. Also I know this way there are no extra added things in it. But mostly I’m just cheap and a food nerd.
@carl669 I will do some math and get back to you after my first cup of coffee.
@carl669
/giphy Hokay so.
This is my teapot short and stout. Clear is it’s handle. Orange is it’s spout.
Sorry. I need more coffee. I would say maybe even consider making a simple syrup with the tea. It kind of depends on how sweet you like your cocktails. If so. I would say
use 2-4 C water
bring to a boil
reduce to simmer
add 2-3C granulated sugar (brown sugar will add a little more depth and toffee like flavor but will discolor the syrup. I’m a salty bitch so I go for flavor over substance always)
Stir until sugar is dissolved
add the bag of happiness ie tea, let it simmer for 3-5 minutes (NOT BOIL just bubble) mid low on the stove
Turn off heat and let it steep for another 5-10 minutes
Strain and store in a glass bottle or mason jar
Or
You could just boil a kettle and make tea and let it steep for at least 15-30 minutes. I’m guessing that you’re going to get a quart if you want it fairly decently strong. Maybe two if you’re just going for a mild tea.
This is probably too much info for a post. There are just lots of variables and I love science and cooking so I could go on for days!
/giphy dying of boredom
@sillyheathen perfect! i prefer my cocktails on the non-sweet side, so i’ll go with just the simple steeping of the magic bag of tea goodness.
@carl669 same. I don’t mind a little but I don’t enjoy most old fashions outside of my home because so many bartenders make me feel like I’m swimming in sugar. It should make for a nice summer boozy treat though!
@carl669 @sillyheathen Will you share how to make the tea blend? I want to try making some this way.
@carl669 @speediedelivery sure thing. I suck at measuring. Most chefs do. I did a total 180. When I did mostly baking and patisserie I weighed out EVERYTHING because chemistry. Then I got more into the savory side of the kitchen and it’s far more loosey goosey. I try to remember to stop and weigh things out but am often doing three things at once and forget. My sister really wants me to make her a cookbook by her fortieth so I need to get better.
@carl669 @sillyheathen @speediedelivery Just get your sister to measure everything after you decide how much and before you put it in the pan, bowel, whatever. That is what we did with my grandmother for a couple of recipes we wanted. Of course one of them still says (a yeast bread thing) enough flour until the spoon stands up straight. LOL
@carl669 @Kidsandliz @speediedelivery
Thats great and I get it. Flours are a funny thing and depending on the time of year and region contain more or less protein and starch so their absorption rates vary.
@carl669 @sillyheathen I can experiment with % of ingredients. I am not a cook by any measure but I tend to adjust recipes to my tastes anyway. Sometimes works out good
We used to have Test-Teas threads on Tuesday and Thursday to discuss our favorite teas. I think we need to bring it back.
@carl669 @sillyheathen @speediedelivery oh I miss the test teas!!!
@carl669 @speediedelivery thankfully I wasn’t drinking water this time but the test teas made me snort laugh so yeah that would be awesome and I’m happy to take the blame for that.
LEGOS! EGGOS! STRATEGO! AWESOME!
I think the word you’re looking for is:
Fucktacular
MIND BOGGLING!
Should’ve used the more common measurement standard of a
bananaorange.(Excellent work, @sillyheathen!)
@narfcake i though raccoons were the common standard measurement?
@carl669 @narfcake I had forgotten about that thread until you just brought it up.
@Kidsandliz me too! i thought i used squirrels as measurement instruments.
@carl669 @Kidsandliz They’re cats now.
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/adopt-unique-cats
@carl669 @Kidsandliz @narfcake I may need to draw something similar with just the opossum as “possum” was my nickname on my grandparents farm when I was a kid.
@carl669 @Kidsandliz @narfcake
So that’s why the possums keep showing up at @lisaviolet 's place!
@carl669 @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @narfcake
Mom moved the babies (there are five that I count) to an old, short cat condo that’s on top of the ladders. She was in there with them (tight fit). Later, I see she’s moved from the condo back to the ladder and left the joeys in the condo.
Yeah, it’s safe in our yard, I’m okay with that.
But. Not. In. My. House.
I just took these. Looks like at least one baby found her.
@carl669 @Kyeh @lisaviolet @narfcake
There are some pretty funny joke posts on the best of craigslist under pets and or lost and found pretending possums and other creatures are cats.
@carl669 @Kidsandliz @lisaviolet @narfcake
She’s a resourceful one, that Mama Possum! The little cat condo seems like a perfect spot.
Infuckingcredible, @sillyheathen!
And @carl669, congratulations on this fucking great collection of orange.
(I almost said inconceivable, but I don’t think that word adequately describes how fucking cool this is!)
@2many2no
/giphy inconceivable!
@carl669 I made you some orange fish dip/spread too. This won’t ship though. You’ll have to take your MOB and make a road trip.
@sillyheathen damn i miss the abundant access to quality fish on the west coast!
@carl669 yeah it doesn’t suck for sure. We have a friend from Alaska who goes up every summer and brings us back amazing fish and we fish the salmon runs in Waldport.
I mean Oregon is AWFUL. It always rains here. It’s horrible. No one would like it ever.
That was fucking awesome of @sillyheathen to do.
FOOLS! TOOLS! JEWELS! AWESOME!
Awe-some package. That deserves the orange cat seal of approval
@ironcheftoni welcome to the show orange cat!
@ironcheftoni He young? His face looks it. Cute little guy - or is this one of the very rare orange female cats?
@ironcheftoni @Kidsandliz We’ve had 1 female & 1 male orange cat (tho they are not with us any more): Cheddar & Colby
@Kidsandliz This is Squeaker. He thinks he’s still a kitten so I don’t remind him that he just turn 8 years old on his last birthday a few months ago. I guess he stays young by doing frequent rounds of zoomies each day. He was also my first foster that of course turned into a foster failure. His youthful looks might be attributed that he had one testicle that failed to descend. Neutering was not the usual snip snip but instead exploratory surgery. Thank goodness for the vet’s Rescue Rate! Between getting rescued and surgery day he was my little One Ball Wonder!
I did have a female orange tabby, Ginger. Aka Ginger-bitch by my friends since I was the only one she tolerated. Her motto was “Talk to the claw, cause the paw ain’t listening!” I lost her to kidney failure at 14 years old
@compunaut, great names! Orange cats are the best!
@compunaut @ironcheftoni @Kidsandliz orange cats are the best. My last orange guy was named Bob. We always joked that he was half bob cat because his mom got out of my friends apartment when we lived in Yosemite and there weren’t exactly many house cars roaming the park. He was also large and had tufts so it was perfect. Squeaker is adorable!
@compunaut @ironcheftoni My orange cat Tigger (back yard birdfeeder dinner bait stray kitty) also didn’t have one testicle descend either. I had no vet rescue rate. You got lucky! Yeah so much fun when they need surgery rather than the usual snip. I was told if I didn’t do that he was likely to get cancer later on.
@compunaut @Kidsandliz The vet says this is the most likely reason Squeaker was abandoned and it’s a pretty rare condition in cats. It’s more common in dogs. He was about a year old when I found him on a very cold night and brought him in. He was so friendly and loving, I knew he could not be a feral. The side effect of his situation was that he couldn’t control his bladder and dribbled a tiny bit. The vet suspects that he was abandoned for that reason. Some people just suck!! Their loss though!
@compunaut @ironcheftoni Glad you took him in. All my kitties were strays or feral and some are just so grateful.
@sillyheathen I just realized the gummies came from WinCo. I loved that place when I was in WA!
@carl669 it’s fab. They have the best bulk and most random fun things. Also their sourdough is inexpensive and pretty fantastic!
@sillyheathen my folks would always take home pounds and pounds of bulk spices whenever they visited.
@carl669 Yes! Your parents are smart! Bulk spices ftw. Well so long as you use them in a somewhat timely manner. (Ahem…Don’t look at my current stash of cardamom pods.) I’m all about the spices and herbs. I drive the Englishman nuts though he doesn’t seem to complain when he’s eating…
@carl669 @sillyheathen Back when I was house hunting, the distance to the nearest WinCo played a role.
@carl669 @narfcake we lucked out. We had a Haggen years ago that was pretty great but wound up going bust after a bum deal with the Albertsons group. Winco wound up buying. It after a few years and completely renovated it. It’s pretty fantastic but also dangerous living within a 3 minute drive.
@carl669 @sillyheathen
The Englishman?
@carl669 @compunaut my SO is a Northern lad from an isle of the coast of Europe.
/giphy fucking brexit
@carl669 @sillyheathen Did you find each other in NOLA or somewhere else? It’s kinda hard for me (a Midwesterner) to imagine an Englishman in The Big Easy.
@carl669 @compunaut We found each other on ICQ. “Uh oh” He random chatted me when I was a sophomore in high school. We were friends online for four years. I wound up going over to visit when my girlfriend and I broke up because she didn’t want to tell her parents she was dating a girl. Anyway. We got on famously and he tried to set me up with his best mate which was weird. He and I wound up snogging after a lost game of pool and the rest is history really. We’ve been together for 21 years and have had crazy adventures and three kids along the way.
@sillyheathen +1 for use of “snogging”
@carl669 There are many fucked up things about that little island but their slang usage is fantastic. I will say I love the way it’s altered my own vocabulary after having lived there for four years. It’s a fascinating place though I don’t think I’d ever live there again. There are things I miss terribly, mostly people, but not enough to move back. I do have a rather interesting accent when I’m around him or anyone that’s British for that matter. But look out if I ever sound Glaswegian because it means I’m three sheets to the wind and something silly is about to happen.
@carl669 @sillyheathen
Of course try using “fag” here
(I lived and worked in NW England and NW Scotland some years back).
@carl669 @Kidsandliz or Fanny there.
@carl669 @Kidsandliz Whereabouts? I lived in Leeds for four years and spent most of my time up north.
@carl669 @sillyheathen Lake District and outside Fort William
@carl669 @Kidsandliz that’s ace! We almost bought houses in Keswick and Applethwaite but decided to move back here so I could be closer to my family.
@carl669 @sillyheathen It was really pretty in both places. The Lake District is like a mini Switzerland but at half the height. Very rocky mountains, sharp edges to ridges… You could climb 2 mountains in a day if you were quick about it. The area around Froth William (which includes the highest mountain in GB - Ben Nevis) they are more rounded and taller although Ben Nevis sure had some spectacularly thin ridges and huge drops on either side. Apparently you could see Sky and Ireland from the top of that except every single time I climbed it with students we were lucky to see 10’ in front of our face. The no trees to speak of well below what would be the tree line due to altitude (I was told the Saxons cut tons of them down when they invaded a zillion years ago) which made the views exceptionally spectacular.
