Spoke to somebody in Misery about the tornados. Apparently there were tornados in Pennsylvania this week, and one of the buildings destroyed was the barn where this person used to live.

@f00l My mom did her thesis on Womem’s Suffrage movement in CT. It was cool going into the state archives and looking at the old photos. One was of Katherine Hepburn as a young child. Her mom was very active in the movement.
Some of her tactics were a bit extreme compared to other suffragists (especially if we look at the time period).

This is totally @mikibell’s fault. I was in a garden supply store, waiting to check out, and a horrible enormous BUG flew directly to me and perched on the back of my (meh) T-shirt, right at the neckline. I do not believe the city that this outage will only last the weekend (they started by saying 24 hours, then it slid to 36 now it has crept to 48…anyone want to take any bets - oh wait the London bookies are refusing to get involved). Our city is run by people who are corrupt, incompetent and idiots. They didn’t even realize that if you salt streets while it is raining there will be no salt left on the road when it turns to ice and then it didn’t occur to them to go back and salt it again when tons of 18 wheelers and cars were stuck on the road for several days (they closed the highway instead). Sheesh. They are a bunch of dumb shits.
I have no bath tub, the two sinks don’t stay full of water very long. I so have a bunch of Arko-Mils storage boxes. I guess I will dump that stuff out and fill those with water. I get to do that with a gallon milk carton. This will be a slow process. Oh and I have 4 meh collapsable water bottles that are christmas presents. Hmm guess they will get them not in the packaging and slightly used. LOL.
@mikibell They are giving out one case of 24 liters water per family, purchased 6000 of them 40,000 people. Stampede perhaps? They are starting giving it out at noon Friday. I plan to be in line.

I have no damn water!!! Well I do have 3 cases of water, 4 buckets full, the sink full (that a cat fell in so half of the water is now on the floor), a bunch of water bottles and 3 milk jugs… I mean I knew it was coming but I do not want to go camping inside my own apartment!!! I guess, technically it isn’t camping since I have electricity… but it is way too close! I used to do that for a living and I happen to like hot running water, electricity, A/C and inside heat that does not require splitting wood and getting up at 4am to put more wood on the fire, or wearing a million blankets/layers of clothing…

@joelmw so glad @f001 knew what you were talking about! I am aware of March Madness, but I really am clueless about sports. I can understand the interest in them, but they are not for me!
@mikibell It’s okay. I have some interest in sports and think that they have some value, but I have a general distaste for their importance to too many people. Mostly it’s just another expression of tribalism, glorification of violence and obsession with physical dominance–all of which we could stand far less of. I think the NFL and American football generally should end, given what we know about the medical science and the inevitability of CTE (there’s no helmet that can prevent it).
That being said, there are aspects of some sports that I find admirable, beautiful and praiseworthy. For somewhat arbitrary reasons, I love basketball. Well, partly because I’m tall and it was expected of me. I also think it’s a truly American game and evocative of jazz. It balances teamwork and individual effort and creativity well, IMO. I especially love the college game, because there’s more emphasis on the team and there’s more possibility for surprise.
March Madness is the one sporting event all year long that I even care about. I don’t really even give much of a fuck about the Olympics (though I do enjoy the various forms of volleyball and the “off” sports like fencing and badminton and such, but not enough that I can’t stand to miss most of it). My affection for Gonzaga has various roots, but mostly I just want to see a good game.
This will be here tomorrow. As well as the other(x2) stuff I need to go with it.

@lisaviolet Ummmmm, well, I didn’t buy the first item, but I did buy the second a while ago. I have done nothing with it, because I haven’t figured out how to put it together I think my dust cover is pink, but I keep the machine in a bag, so I haven’t had a need for the dust cover yet!
This is my 2nd first item, now I have three (because I’ll still use the oldest first item). I’ll have three 3rd items. One for each machine.
The second item is pretty simple, just make sure you have a branded Silhouette blade to do a side by side comparison depth of the blade. I also read that using these will void the warranty, but how would they know which blade was used? I ordered two, one for regular and one for vinyl (so I don’t have to adjust the depth when I change material). At about a buck a blade, changing them when they start to go dull isn’t a big thing.
@mikibell Oh, and for the second item, unscrew the cap, slide the blade (make sure it has a spring on it) in, the put the cap (carefully, don’t hit the tip of the blade) back on. The other side of the holder twists to adjust the blade depth.
@lisaviolet all of that hurt my head even more – I had heard about the warranty concern, but whatever, it is what it is. I don’t have three. Hubby would probably sell ME if I did. However, I am considering getting rid of the cricuts. I have the cricut cake, the cricut air and a small cricut (can’t remember the name) as well as dozens of cartridges. I like the silhouette, not better, just differently.
I think the difference for me is the software. Cricut doesn’t give anything away for free – even their freebies are “limited” time. So I have spent more time in the Silhouette software, playing with different settings, etc.

I downloaded version 4 of the Silhouette software (in beta) and I really like it.
All of those cricuts! That’s a lot of machines! I checked those out at one point, but didn’t like the idea of buying cartridges. Beside spending the money, there’s the storage. I’m running out of room. And I have the whole garage! Well, I share it with the cats, but still…

He kind of didn’t do well this weekend, so I made an appointment for him. First one available was yesterday afternoon. He’d seemed okay, just off his food and there was a little hitch in his breathing, but nothing worse than he’s had for the past three or four months. And he was getting meds for it.
But at the vet’s office, when we got him out of the carrier, he was gasping for breath. Non-stop. The vet said she could barely hear his heart through the wheezing in his lungs. She told us that cats with COPD don’t get better. They can do things to prolong the life, but it’s not a good life.
@f00l It does. I was not expecting it. I knew he was sick, but I didn’t realize how bad he was. I’m glad it happened on the way to the vet, that way he wasn’t in such horrible distress for very long.

You get an app on your phone and pick out the podcasts of interest. The app automatically links to new episodes, which can be downloaded or streamed. I’m trying to find the right balance so that I can sorta kinda maybe keep up a little.

When your friends get there, you keep one bud in just until the end of the podcast. That’s @mikibell’s fault, because she should have had a better influence on my manners.

At least it’s from a legitimate grocery store. I can’t say I’ve ever been tempted by ice cream at a thrift store, since it’s usually melted on the ground in the parking lot. Nor any ice cream makers, even when it’s marked down to $1.
There are ice cream van or cart vendors that do hang around thrift stores selling, however! – because SoCal.

@mikibell You could not be more wrong. I am a genealogist. My dead relatives are a whole lot more fun than most live people. When acquaintances find out I can do research, they often try get me to do it for free. I give them names of certified genealogists, who charge for the work. If they’re too cheap, and think I’m a pushover, I will indeed do some research. I presented one woman with proof of her father’s five marriages and three divorces, one of which was unfortunately timed to make her and her sister illegitimate.
@mikibell To be fair, my own grandmother produced her first child five months after her first wedding, and after she divorced that husband, married #2 two days later, and produced child #2 three months later. She died before I was born; I would have loved to hear her stories. Putting together timelines from actual records is always fun.

Technically, only partially typing. I was browsing thru descriptions of a bunch of podcasts from all over the place, and time was short, and I wanted to finish. Plus some typing because i searched for some stuff.
Basically it’s the way i use my smartphone screen when i’m obsessed with something and under time pressure that messes it up.
@thismyusername When I lived in the UK and worked for an outdoor adventure program we’d rescue sheep stuck like this (lower them to the ground via a rope typically). They’d kick like crazy when we were trying to set it up, then once their feet didn’t touch anything (eg they were hanging) they’d be still.
@mikibell I sat through a couple hours of an SOP meeting, which seemed to have lots of in-the-weeds discussions, and what seemed to be a fair amount of bikeshedding on the approach.
On the plus side, I found a key I had misplaced sticking out of the fold between the car seat cushions.

I mean, I am glad that the MRI is negative because obviously nothing really nasty is wrong (many years I chipped the end of my femur on the inside by the knee and put a tiny tear in the meniscus when the tongue of a loaded 10 canoe canoe trailer fell on it when a bunch of us were moving it on gravel at the put in, but that more or less eventually healed) but then why all the sharp pain in it? The MD’s opinion - neg MRI, thus no reason for it to hurt, not his problem. So it is now your problem.

Staying somewhere inside is starting to look more and more like a want and not a need. Won’t be the first time, it will be mid May so not too hot and bugs won’t be all that bad if I need to crack a window. Remember I used to take people camping for a living, lived in the foc’sle of a boat where the chain locker leaked… A dry car is luxury in some respects.

Walmart - in spring and summer - go to the fan and A/C aisle - they sell a battery operated white plastic fan that’s about 6-8 inches across? Under $10. Runs on 4 D batteries. Looks like plastic junk but isn’t bad.
Dollar General sells cheap batteries. The name brand batteries you buy anywhere are much better. The gemerics at Costco and Walgreens are pretty decent. One set of batteries will prob last way beyond this trip, running all night.
You prob already know this, but having moving air will make all the diff.

It is even more your fault that they are turning off the water starting Friday at 3 through the weekend for most of the city (about 40,000 of us will lose water). I do not believe the city that this outage will only last the weekend (they started by saying 24 hours, then it slid to 36 now it has crept to 48…anyone want to take any bets - oh wait the London bookies are refusing to get involved). Our city is run by people who are corrupt, incompetent and idiots. They didn’t even realize that if you salt streets while it is raining there will be no salt left on the road when it turns to ice and then it didn’t occur to them to go back and salt it again when tons of 18 wheelers and cars were stuck on the road for several days (they closed the highway instead). Sheesh. They are a bunch of dumb shits.
I have no bath tub, the two sinks don’t stay full of water very long. I so have a bunch of Arko-Mils storage boxes. I guess I will dump that stuff out and fill those with water. I get to do that with a gallon milk carton. This will be a slow process. Oh and I have 4 meh collapsable water bottles that are christmas presents. Hmm guess they will get them not in the packaging and slightly used. LOL.

I have no damn water!!! Well I do have 3 cases of water, 4 buckets full, the sink full (that a cat fell in so half of the water is now on the floor), a bunch of water bottles and 3 milk jugs… I mean I knew it was coming but I do not want to go camping inside my own apartment!!! I guess, technically it isn’t camping since I have electricity… but it is way too close! @mikibell It’s okay. I have some interest in sports and think that they have some value, but I have a general distaste for their importance to too many people. Mostly it’s just another expression of tribalism, glorification of violence and obsession with physical dominance–all of which we could stand far less of. I think the NFL and American football generally should end, given what we know about the medical science and the inevitability of CTE (there’s no helmet that can prevent it).
That being said, there are aspects of some sports that I find admirable, beautiful and praiseworthy. For somewhat arbitrary reasons, I love basketball. Well, partly because I’m tall and it was expected of me. I also think it’s a truly American game and evocative of jazz. It balances teamwork and individual effort and creativity well, IMO. I especially love the college game, because there’s more emphasis on the team and there’s more possibility for surprise.
March Madness is the one sporting event all year long that I even care about. I don’t really even give much of a fuck about the Olympics (though I do enjoy the various forms of volleyball and the “off” sports like fencing and badminton and such, but not enough that I can’t stand to miss most of it). My affection for Gonzaga has various roots, but mostly I just want to see a good game.

This is my 2nd first item, now I have three (because I’ll still use the oldest first item). I’ll have three 3rd items. One for each machine.
The second item is pretty simple, just make sure you have a branded Silhouette blade to do a side by side comparison depth of the blade. I also read that using these will void the warranty, but how would they know which blade was used? I ordered two, one for regular and one for vinyl (so I don’t have to adjust the depth when I change material). At about a buck a blade, changing them when they start to go dull isn’t a big thing.
@mikibell Oh, and for the second item, unscrew the cap, slide the blade (make sure it has a spring on it) in, the put the cap (carefully, don’t hit the tip of the blade) back on. The other side of the holder twists to adjust the blade depth.
@lisaviolet all of that hurt my head even more – I had heard about the warranty concern, but whatever, it is what it is. I don’t have three. Hubby would probably sell ME if I did. However, I am considering getting rid of the cricuts. I have the cricut cake, the cricut air and a small cricut (can’t remember the name) as well as dozens of cartridges. I like the silhouette, not better, just differently.
I think the difference for me is the software. Cricut doesn’t give anything away for free – even their freebies are “limited” time. So I have spent more time in the Silhouette software, playing with different settings, etc.

I downloaded version 4 of the Silhouette software (in beta) and I really like it.
All of those cricuts! That’s a lot of machines! I checked those out at one point, but didn’t like the idea of buying cartridges. Beside spending the money, there’s the storage. I’m running out of room. And I have the whole garage! Well, I share it with the cats, but still…

Back in January, I blamed @jbartus for Pete being so sick.
Today, I blame @mikibell for his loss.
He kind of didn’t do well this weekend, so I made an appointment for him. First one available was yesterday afternoon. He’d seemed okay, just off his food and there was a little hitch in his breathing, but nothing worse than he’s had for the past three or four months. And he was getting meds for it.
But at the vet’s office, when we got him out of the carrier, he was gasping for breath. Non-stop. The vet said she could barely hear his heart through the wheezing in his lungs. She told us that cats with COPD don’t get better. They can do things to prolong the life, but it’s not a good life.
COPD? He had COPD?
We said goodbye.
I feel gut punched.

Really, I spent all day holding it together to get her cared for and home safely. Now I’m nauseated and coming down from the adrenaline, watching her sleep and resisting the urge to pick her up and sleep with her on my chest.

You get an app on your phone and pick out the podcasts of interest. The app automatically links to new episodes, which can be downloaded or streamed. I’m trying to find the right balance so that I can sorta kinda maybe keep up a little.

When acquaintances find out I can do research, they often try get me to do it for free. I give them names of certified genealogists, who charge for the work. If they’re too cheap, and think I’m a pushover, I will indeed do some research. I presented one woman with proof of her father’s five marriages and three divorces, one of which was unfortunately timed to make her and her sister illegitimate.
@mikibell To be fair, my own grandmother produced her first child five months after her first wedding, and after she divorced that husband, married #2 two days later, and produced child #2 three months later. She died before I was born; I would have loved to hear her stories. Putting together timelines from actual records is always fun.

If there’s a positive aspect to this, the hydrant remained intact. If that broke, replacing your car would be cheaper than the repair bill for the hydrant.
Hydrants are typically mounted with “break-away” bolts, designed to sheer away in a hard impact. First, there’s the hydrant itself – that cost $$$$. Then there’s the underground piece, which gets damaged in the process. Material is $$$, but a lot in labor to repair/replace. Add in municipal overhead (they will bill you for it), water damage (they will bill you for it), etc.
@narfcake Hey, Narf… we were having this conversation at home the other day – for hydrant clearing of snow – how much clearance is necessary? My parents have one in front of their house, it has the main bolt and then two side bolts. I cleared down a foot from each of them, is that sufficient room to attach the hoses? (Seriously, concerned that it would not be enough.)

We do deal with dry brush here, however … municipals usually want 36" clear for that here.

I blame you @mikibell because my left knee is killing me again. I haven’t done anything to it that I know of and allegedly the MRI doesn’t show anything. I mean, I am glad that the MRI is negative because obviously nothing really nasty is wrong (many years I chipped the end of my femur on the inside by the knee and put a tiny tear in the meniscus when the tongue of a loaded 10 canoe canoe trailer fell on it when a bunch of us were moving it on gravel at the put in, but that more or less eventually healed) but then why all the sharp pain in it? The MD’s opinion - neg MRI, thus no reason for it to hurt, not his problem. So it is now your problem.
@Kidsandliz Is it the knee or the pes bursa? I got a shot in mine on Monday, because about twice a year it becomes troublesome. No surgery needed. Already had meniscus, patella smoothing etc. on that side. Prevented by doing the stretches they taught me. Do I stretch? Uh-.

I have a separate medical issue taking place (not my knee - that is sort of incidental) that has me owing, prior to the apt earlier this week, $957 after insurance paid (that is in addition to all the cancer debt which is about ready to go up around $3000-3500)… And I had a $600+ bill to fix my 12 year old car earlier this month. Staying somewhere inside is starting to look more and more like a want and not a need. Won’t be the first time, it will be mid May so not too hot and bugs won’t be all that bad if I need to crack a window. Remember I used to take people camping for a living, lived in the foc’sle of a boat where the chain locker leaked… A dry car is luxury in some respects.

Walmart - in spring and summer - go to the fan and A/C aisle - they sell a battery operated white plastic fan that’s about 6-8 inches across? Under $10. Runs on 4 D batteries. Looks like plastic junk but isn’t bad.
Dollar General sells cheap batteries. The name brand batteries you buy anywhere are much better. The gemerics at Costco and Walgreens are pretty decent. One set of batteries will prob last way beyond this trip, running all night.
You prob already know this, but having moving air will make all the diff.

There were a ton on that map and I copied some of them (nice $18 one with a cat! except they are not doing it that week - or are full) and might have missed that one. I should go back and look again since I know what is there may have changed. Been really busy and haven’t have time yet.

Where do you shower and stuff? Wifi?
@f00l Cooler in car. Sponge bath and dishes in restroom late at night. Wifi in hospital/clinic where the door from the parking garage is open all night. And I can get my hair cut and washed for free at the beauty parlor when I am there.

I think every Buc’ee’s has showers, FWIW.
Or for $10 you could join one of the cheap fitness places like Planet Fitness and have a nice shower any time day or night. They are all 24 hour.
@mikibell I blame you that @galmaegi jumped the gun on transferring goatship away from you resulting in the premature end of your goatdom without proper conclusion.
The only reasonable resolution for this issue is for us to re-goat you at a later date such that your goatdom may have the end it deserves.
