Thanks, Consumer Reports.

Look at all those hot things in your kitchen. The stove. The oven. The toaster. The hot water. So many things you have to be careful around. You might even call them burn risks.

And yet, you haven’t boarded up your kitchen. You don’t flee with panic from a marshmallow roast. You’re not going to stop having birthdays because of all those dangerous candles. Maybe you even barbecue. Because you are a competent adult, and you trust your ability not to burn yourself.

So it is with the Hamilton Beach Flexbrew 2-Way Coffeemaker, a dual-function coffeemaker that lets you brew either a full pot or a single serving, as you prefer. As Consumer Reports says, it is indeed a “burn hazard” because, while you’re using the single-serving function, the warming plate on the full-pot side also heats up. “So you could inadvertently burn yourself on the drip-side warming plate while reaching for your mug of single-serve coffee if the carafe is, say, in the sink, not on the warming plate,” their report finds.

Thanks for catching that, Consumer Reports. The more we know of potential dangers, the better off we all are. Knowledge is power, especially for consumers. There’s been no reported instance of anyone getting burnt by this coffeemaker. But still, if you don’t trust yourself around a campfire, if you never iron your clothes not out of laziness but out of sheer terror, you should probably take a pass on this one.

Or you can take the smart-people discount. Are you willing to accept the responsibility to avoid burning yourself? Can you remember to keep the carafe on the warming plate whenever you’re using the Flexbrew 2-Way, maybe with an inch or two of water in it to absorb the heat? Or, at the very least, to just not touch the hot part when you’re getting your single-serve coffee? (Unlike most of the things in your kitchen that can burn you, this one is labeled with big glowing red letters that say HOT.)

If so, please enjoy a massive discount on a fancy coffeemaker that can brew a full pot of ground coffee, or a single serving of ground coffee or K-Cups. The fact that some consumers followed the “Do Not Buy: Safety Risk” means there were plenty left over for us to buy at rock-bottom prices. So thanks again, Consumer Reports, for making this so cheap.
