If this is the 49983, $90 at Wal-Mart & Best Buy. Wal-Mart has decent reviews and Best Buy's reviews are great. May also qualify for a $5 rebate, if you're into that sort of thing. No guarantees since it's refurbished but it's not listed in the exclusions: http://www.hamiltonbeach.com/choose-flexbrew
Looks super awesome, but a large number of the negative reviews on Amazon all point to a chemical/plastic taste getting into your coffee. Sounds unpleasant, but still tempted.
@meh I'm in the same boat. Being refurbished I'm curious if someone was able to use it enough to get the plasticy taste out of it. Many say that after a week or two of use the plastic taste goes away. But nobody can know for sure, the reviews are so sporadic.
@studerc Let's blame @thumperchick for the chemical/plastic taste. Probably just as effective as rinsing the coffee maker with vinegar, as some suggested.
@Moose I can only hope these boxes are in better condition than the fryers I bought. Product issue was resolved but I'm still stuck with a worthless fryer now, haha.
Full spousal approval on this purchase, yessir. We were lookin' for a brewer; I've been wanting the K-cup; and now I get the handmedown for work. Win win win.
divergent-mannerly-spring Been wanting a K-cup, and was looking at this same one just a few days ago. But I'd also been hoping to find one at a good price. Now to hide the K-cups from the teens, or they will have to make themselves drinks non-stop. Anyone have a good site for cheap k-cups?
@remo28 Amazon has some great deals on non-Keurig brand K Cups, many of which taste better anyway! I just bought "Mad Monkey" k cups during a lightning deal and it's my new favorite brand.
@remo28 I order mine from coffeeretriever.com If you order more than $75, fedex shipping is free. Around most holidays they email out a 5% off coupon. Brings their cost to about the same as BB&B w/20% off coupon.
@remo28 Believe it or not, I just bought a bulk supply of K Cups from Costco (Kirkland Pacific Bold) and they are terrific. I've been a K Cup user since Woot first sold Keurig.
@doubleabeepbeep Idunno. I just pasted the link. But I can empathize with your pain. I'm pretty sure this whole thing is a an elaborate psychology experiment. Look what they did to me: https://meh.com/forum/topics/wtf-per-se
Thanks meh you know how to sell something we all don't want, just got, or don't need, but at the same time create the need, or want to have something we never knew we needed. IRK MUG US LIKE YOU MEH SHIRT US
@ceagee So would it be Thumperchick's fault that we can't blame her anymore but only for two days? This seems like some kind of time limited black hole.
innate-keen-kiss. Sounds like a winner! Now to hope the "P" in the model number isn't for "refurbished to add extra plastic taste" as some of the reviews mentioned.
@derpandabar no difference except inclusion or not of mug. Some listings like Amazons add to the confusion. Our boxes have either # (or even S I believe) but no mug post the refurbishing process. I think the product team here decided the P best matched.
@xEBRONx That poor man's hand must have gotten burnt by the dastardly coffee maker. The Prophecy of Consumer Reports has been fulfilled! Pasta and Sauce preserve us; let us sauté…
i don't need this but i want it. have a k-cup brewer that's working fine but my inner voice is telling me that if i don't buy this my current brewer will die and then i'll be kicking myself for not jumping on this oh so meh offering.
If the price was $25 you would have caught this parsimonious fish. Next time try including the Irk mug…
If I'm going to buy refurbished items and jeopardize my precious bodily fluids I want the satisfaction of being a cheap basterd. The coffee maker does seem nice though...
So, @JonT, are there any Irk mugs for reals? Or did someone create only one prototype to torment us? (Or is the whole thing just a photoshopped dream?)
Coffemakers are hot? That's news to me. Even if the red label read "Don't touch this HOT plate" some brain-stem will purposefully touch it. (just to make sure it is) We're such a nanny-state that the Consumer Reports guy in their video is appropriately named Jim Nanni. Oh, the irony...
This looks like a super great buy.....so excited. Got one. 90% of everything I buy has been refurbished and never ever had an issue. Meh please keep focused on stuff like this and turn away from speaker docks and batteries.
@mehjohnson +1 for order confirmation references. The mnemonics of these are even better than expected. Yesterday @shawn and I looked up to see first Google image search results of our past codes and there are often even hilarious picture examples. It is neater knowing they are each one time use.
@mehjohnson yes, you will need an eharmony code after asking that, as well as stitches, pain releivers, a new place to live and possibly a proctologist to remove foreign objects shaped like coffee preparation equipment from your colon.
@snapster Are the codes randomly generated adjective-adjective-noun sets or is there some method to the madness? If they're random, do you have some cool way to prevent re-use? Or is it simply look-up and regenerate if a prior match exists?
@nadroj I didn't code it and the number of possibilities might statistically make the answer irrelevant, but I assume that it's random without replacement on the resulting 3 combination phrase. (correct it is three sets; adjective, adjective, noun)
@nadroj@snapster with the amount of words that we have, I think there are a billion possibilities without repeats so it might take a little while before we run out.
@snapster It's nice that each one is 'as a snowflake'. Thanks, now I have a new time-consuming thing to do with each each order, doing an image search. I expected some Halloween pics from raging-rude-hunchback (pancake maker), but results were too disney-clean to post here. Also hoped hospitable-flirty-cow (Philips HT bluray) results would be too unclean to post here, but I guess I need to check my settings and dirty them up if possible. Even though it's hospitable-flirty-cow, not goat, I might have gotten a pic of Thumperchick?
@alacrity Ya, we had a little 'conversation' about clutter and space in our small apt, etc. No stitches or anything, but I just woke up and it's a little sore when I sit down...?
@snapster I like the thumbnails idea. I'm going to go through my settings shortly, I should be getting some way gross stuff on some of the code phrases :)
@Barbarian it's funny as we looked up various possibilities. Glove warmer seemed possible. We were excited briefly about it heating to the exact correct surface temperature coffee beans need to be roasted ("first crack" temp) but then calmed down and accepted reality.
How does the reservoir work? Does it keep hot water for a quick brew of the K-cups like a Keurig does, or do you pour and wait like a drip coffee maker?
@bsdfm That's never really been true, but the selection's much better now that Keurig's patents have expired. And you've always been able to put your own coffee in there anyway.
Got mine. Dusty, lid warped, coffee grounds inside reservoir. First run on Kcup no water came out. Second run on Kcup water came out onto carafe plate.
Lovely piece of non-working junk that should never been sold.
The manual says for best results use a specific brand of K-cups. What it should say is many brands of K-cups have too thick of a top on them. The upper HB piercer can't poke a hole through those tops.
This apparently is why my water backed up, came out the carafe, or just sat in the system waiting for an opening to form so it could leak out. By manually finishing the piercing on the top of the K-cup, the machine made a cup of K-cup brewed coffee.
I also found that, as stated in the instructions, clearing the water through a carafe brew (without coffee grounds) is necessary. Without doing that, I got series of errors while trying a K-Cup brew because I had too much water in the system even if the reservoir read empty to me.
Sorry about the novel. Hope it saves somebody some return shipping fees and some time.
Sounds like my problem. Mine was fixed by making sure the top foil of the kcup was completely pierced through. I also ran a San Francisco Bay cup--it doesn't have a hard plastic shell, just a thin foil top and mesh sides--and it worked fine. The piercer in the machine cut completely through the top. So I've used two K-cups and got two cups of coffee.
One thing I didn't try was just to run coffee grounds through the small filter on the kcup side. That would probably be the best approach to see if everything is functioning properly, then move onto a kcup instead of grounds in the small filter.
Additionally, as I noted above, I had to run a grounds-less carafe brew to rid all the water out of the system. The reservoir looks empty but without the carafe brew, I kept getting errors when I tried to brew a k-cup.
@mehmeyousweet Carafe side fine on mine (I always run water thru first time anyway), but I also got error on the single-serve side. Checked instructions here http://useandcares.hamiltonbeach.com/files/840219701.pdf (none in the box), and saw that there has to be 10oz of water or less in the system for kcup side. Tried again with less water and it worked, with grounds. Can't comment on the piercing because I don't have any kcups yet. But knife is for fixing. TL;DR Make sure there's not too much water in it.
Mine leaks terribly while using the carafe. The single serve works fine though the coffee isn't super hot. Anyone have luck getting a return processed from Meh? I've emailed Hamilton Beach for replacement as I don't think Meh should be responsible for the meh job HB did on these.
I got mine last week. It would act like it brewed the coffee but nothing would come out, either side. Warming plate was warm, so it seemed like something was stuck or clogged. Being an IT nerd and stubborn, I pulled it apart, making sure the lines were clear and checking for broken parts. I didn't see anything, but I it worked fine after I put it back together. Coffee makers are simple, so I figured the engineer trick of "take it completely apart and put it back together again" might fix any problems. This is what I do for fun. In hindsight, I should have taken pictures of the process (Sweet, sweet internet points).
@JonT Next time, I think mostly it was because my kitchen was dirty. I pull stuff apart all the time, so I'll document the next Meh thing I take apart.
@The_Baron They had me cut off the cord and send them a photo, say it'll take 2 weeks to get a "new" one. Doubt it's gonna be new. Also, they didn't like the receipt I sent, a pdf of the order from the site here. I told them that's how the 21st century operates and they acquiesced.
@michaelahess That is strange and kinda pointless. It would be fairly easy to (properly) wire the cord back in. You just pull it open, remove the old cord, prep the end where you cut it, and reattach it to the device. I guess they assume the regular "java joe" isn't going to know how to do that.
@The_Baron SHHHH don't tip them off! ;) It's very common for low cost devices like this. Paying to ship back to them and then refurb them again isn't worth it when the device cost $2 to make to begin with.
@michaelahess Just received the replacement from HB. It's working without a leak so far. Seems like it was a "new" refurb, no scuffs or any previous indications of use. I'll now tear into the leaky one and see if I can figure out why it was leaking so badly. At worst I'll have some spare parts!
I wanted to update what I said about San Francisco Bay k-cups.
I ordered 72 of the Rain Forest Blend and the piercer on the machine doesn't pierce these cups. The machine pierced the first San Francisco Bay cup perfectly fine.
@derpandabar it looks like the rebate does work. I have an updated status and it hasn't been declined. Didn't receive the money yet but it is in the works.
So, I just finally opened this thing and it doesn't work! Is Hamilton Beach easy to work with or should I just accept this as a loss. Totally my fault for not testing this months and months ago.

@derpandabar yep first bullet point on main page we try to put model - needs to be repeated here I see.
I'm still peeling off my burnt skin from the unit I got for Christmas. Thanks Grandma!
Want Irk mug. Pretty sure I want the coffee pot too.
@KDemo yessss! sell an irk mug!
@KDemo and a scone
@ceagee triangle scones!
IRK MUG! I WANTS!
I want the IRK mug.
@rileyper IRK all the things! \o/
Damn. I just bought a new coffee maker two weeks ago.
@jsh139 Same...
@jsh139 Me too. This week, gf got her old Gevalia club pot out of storage to replace mine. Now "Do you really need 3 coffee pots?" Mehbe.
@mehjohnson Well, we all know that coffee is serious business, but no one needs 3 coffee makers :(
Me wants IRK MUG!
I had to buy this the minute I saw it! such a good deal!!!
Awesome sauce! Bought one
LOL, coffee maker goes up, people rather have an Irk mug.
Oh dear...
Bravo, this is up there on the write-ups.
good deal but doesnt beat my super deluxe Keurig I got for $20 new at a thrift store....
Looks super awesome, but a large number of the negative reviews on Amazon all point to a chemical/plastic taste getting into your coffee. Sounds unpleasant, but still tempted.

What if I said I would buy a speaker dock if it came with an Irk mug tomorrow?
@JazzyJosh please don't incurage them... You're my goat nomination for this
@Ryaneil encourage**
@JazzyJosh Im with you!
@studerc Are you saying you wouldn't pay $8 for a speaker dock that comes with an Irk mug?
@studerc spell check meh, although http://www.dsl.ac.uk/entry/dost/incurage
@Ryaneil This is 'Mehrica, not Scotland. Get your shit straight!
@studerc No alentamos!!
Does this come in the retail box? Would make a nice gift for the in laws..
@br1ckhouse It certainly does!
@Moose I can only hope these boxes are in better condition than the fryers I bought. Product issue was resolved but I'm still stuck with a worthless fryer now, haha.
rude-practical-judge
Hell yeah, after a couple cups of coffee I am.
Full spousal approval on this purchase, yessir. We were lookin' for a brewer; I've been wanting the K-cup; and now I get the handmedown for work. Win win win.
Thanks, meh.
If I buy this tonight, will you put up an IRK mug tomorrow? Or at least next week?
@baqui63 Wouldn't it be sweet if they just threw one in with each order?!
@studerc If they don't, it's all @Thumperchick's fault.
PERFECT to go with my Mooing Cow Mug from the Fukubukuro deal. Too bad I don't drink coffee regularly...
Yes! IRK MUG, please!
divergent-mannerly-spring
Been wanting a K-cup, and was looking at this same one just a few days ago. But I'd also been hoping to find one at a good price. Now to hide the K-cups from the teens, or they will have to make themselves drinks non-stop. Anyone have a good site for cheap k-cups?
@remo28 The best I've been able to do is 20% off Bed Bath Beyond coupons.
@remo28 Check into Amazon's Subscribe & Save program.
@remo28 Ollie's Bargain Barn? I usually end up at the warehouse clubs buying cases of 80.
@remo28 Amazon has some great deals on non-Keurig brand K Cups, many of which taste better anyway! I just bought "Mad Monkey" k cups during a lightning deal and it's my new favorite brand.

SO........this is the cornballer of coffee makers?
@doubleabeepbeep
@joelmw You know.....I tried to post that in my comment....and it didn't show up. What sorcery is this you are using?
@joelmw "Mother of God! Every damn time!"

IRK MUG US LIKE YOU MEH SHIRT US
The fact that they are not offering Irk mugs, and blatantly teasing us with the possibility, is @thumperchick's fault.
Reminder : Last 2 days to blame @thumperchick for stuff. Get your blame in while you can !
@ceagee If I had a vote, they'd be selling Irk mugs! I'm sorry that it's my fault that they haven't sold Irk merch.
@Thumperchick I'm highly disappointed in you, yet thoroughly pleased with the fine quality of your goatness (goatiness? goating? goatying?)
@ceagee So would it be Thumperchick's fault that we can't blame her anymore but only for two days? This seems like some kind of time limited black hole.
@PWiddy That event horizon has no scape velocity.
Sorry. @nadroj needs more coffee.
it's missing the essential I.V. connector and hose assembly- and amazon doesn't carry it.
must be @thumperchick's fault.
pass.
Sell combo Irk mug, speaker dock, and meh.com blankie from the matress deal together. The complete mehxperience.
@Dash if you put your iphone into the empty mug- the mug becomes an accoustic amplifier, and voila- SPEAKER DOCK!!!
@Dash I would buy this. Do you hear that meh staff? I SAID I WOULD BUY THIS.
@alacrity that's genius!!
innate-keen-kiss. Sounds like a winner! Now to hope the "P" in the model number isn't for "refurbished to add extra plastic taste" as some of the reviews mentioned.
free volt ???
@Parkjungsub nope! and it is sold out.
Is the model number 49983 or 49983P? Is there even a difference? Says 49983 on main page but 49983P in specs.
@derpandabar no difference except inclusion or not of mug. Some listings like Amazons add to the confusion. Our boxes have either # (or even S I believe) but no mug post the refurbishing process. I think the product team here decided the P best matched.
@snapster according to this Walmart answer from Hamilton Beach, the "P" means there is a permanent filter in this model. Other than that the units are the same. http://answers.walmart.com/answers/1336/product/28861022/questions.htm
Damn! Reluctantly pass.. I already have two working and a brand new on backup (not k-cups though) but I'd jump on it otherwise. Good deal.
@annwat My inner voice is doing the same. Ugh!
There needs to be a Bothers Me More Than It Should bundle, with an Irk puppet and mug.
@Thumperchick no irk puppets that would make him no longer unique. Small plush versions on the other hand...
I know we don't get the mug, or the K-Cups, but what about the disembodied arm? I want the disembodied arm!!!
@KDemo
Coffemakers are hot? That's news to me. Even if the red label read "Don't touch this HOT plate" some brain-stem will purposefully touch it. (just to make sure it is)
We're such a nanny-state that the Consumer Reports guy in their video is appropriately named Jim Nanni.
Oh, the irony...
@Kerig3 - And your name is appropriately close to Keurig.
gross. buying a used coffee maker? why not sell used toasters too?
@joehsk I'd buy refurbished/used toaster. Just run some vinegar thru this thing, like you should do once in a while with your coffeemaker anyway.
@joehsk I'm not seeing the "used" part anyway. Sounds more like "sitting in a warehouse for so long it can't really be sold as new."
Looks like the Irk mugs are a magic dream. Spotted photo at the other mega-site that sells books.
Maybe the powers-that-be will bow to the demand for real Irk mugs.
@mehjohnson Used coffee crap no. Illusion that is desired. Irk mugs dream to be.
@Guy767 Juicy used remants- they won't taint my pleasure brew. Irk mugs fade away...
This looks like a super great buy.....so excited. Got one.
90% of everything I buy has been refurbished and never ever had an issue. Meh please keep focused on stuff like this and turn away from speaker docks and batteries.
Can be used in 220 volt?
@LEEY only with a step-down converter ($10 or equivelant at most stores)
wandering-airy-spot
I was kinda-waiting-hoping (Eharmony confirmation code?) that these would sell out while I 'mulled' it over.
My girlfriend just dug her old Gevalia out of storage for me to replace my old unwieldy machine. (<< I see possible meh conf codes all the time now.)
So of course I got the "Do you really need 3 coffeepots?"
I'm waiting to ask "Do you really need another pair of shoes/boots/crocs/sandals?"
Then will see if I really do need an eharmony code later hehheh.
For those who know me IRL, yes, I originally wrote deterministic or stochastic. meh.
@nadroj I didn't code it and the number of possibilities might statistically make the answer irrelevant, but I assume that it's random without replacement on the resulting 3 combination phrase. (correct it is three sets; adjective, adjective, noun)
@nadroj @snapster with the amount of words that we have, I think there are a billion possibilities without repeats so it might take a little while before we run out.
@alacrity Ya, we had a little 'conversation' about clutter and space in our small apt, etc. No stitches or anything, but I just woke up and it's a little sore when I sit down...?
@mehjohnson haha yes I think it would be fun to show those as thumbnails on a profile page. also, maybe you have safe-search enabled :)
@snapster I like the thumbnails idea. I'm going to go through my settings shortly, I should be getting some way gross stuff on some of the code phrases :)
@mehjohnson Just my tail end ;)
whiny-ambivalent-narwhal seems about right
Is the Irk mug the new screaming monkey?
This. Want. Not having it is truly bothering me more than it should.
just bought one, thank you MEH! (:
now i demand an Irk mug or else......
Tempted to buy but it's a refurb and I don't really need one since I have a small coffee maker that I only use once or twice a week.
@snapster
That's not a BURN HAZARD, it's a second USEFUL COOKING SURFACE! You can use it to make your EGGS AND TOAST while your coffee brews. :))
@Barbarian it's funny as we looked up various possibilities. Glove warmer seemed possible. We were excited briefly about it heating to the exact correct surface temperature coffee beans need to be roasted ("first crack" temp) but then calmed down and accepted reality.
Irk Mug included in deal.....deal would be sold out.
@DaDuck Deal is sold out
@MEHcus Well yeah...now...would have sold out about as quick as a BOC if the Irk Mug was involved.
That coffee maker does not have pagination. For this reason alone... meh.
@phatmass left side = carafe = no pagination. right side = single cup = pagination?
How does the reservoir work? Does it keep hot water for a quick brew of the K-cups like a Keurig does, or do you pour and wait like a drip coffee maker?
@kadagan ... and I waited to long to ask.. sold out. :) Oh well, the wife will be happy!
K-cups make gross coffee though. Aeropress all the way. Takes like 60 seconds.
@bsdfm That's never really been true, but the selection's much better now that Keurig's patents have expired. And you've always been able to put your own coffee in there anyway.
@bsdfm oohhh! Are you Tim Ferriss?
My confirmation code references the wonderful terrible speaker dock...
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
I love purple.
Got mine today!
@tonylegrone You wore your Meh package-receiving shirt!
@Starblind I do try to wear it on the day of deliveries!
Got mine. Dusty, lid warped, coffee grounds inside reservoir. First run on Kcup no water came out. Second run on Kcup water came out onto carafe plate.
Lovely piece of non-working junk that should never been sold.
@mehmeyousweet mine worked... meh.
@mehmeyousweet I had a shattered carafe. Whoever refurbished these packaged them poorly. Too much wiggle room in the box.
Okay. Let's review.

@michaelahess you'll get the best 'make it right' options from them but we're here if refund of last resort is needed. sorry about the hassle.
@snapster Thanks! I'll let you know how they handle it, you guys rock!
I got mine last week. It would act like it brewed the coffee but nothing would come out, either side. Warming plate was warm, so it seemed like something was stuck or clogged.

@The_Baron Nice job. Ya, pics would've been fun.
@The_Baron I was tempted to do this last night as well, the tri-wing screws made me decide sleep was preferable. :)
@michaelahess Only the bottom ones are tri-wing, a flat head can be used in a pinch. You can't get to the reservoir from the bottom though.
@The_Baron You should have! If you decide to dismantle anything else from us you should definitely document it.
I must be drinking in my sleep again. Only one of the 72 Rain Forest Blend didn't pierce properly.
The next 4 or 5 have been pierced by the machine.
@derpandabar it looks like the rebate does work. I have an updated status and it hasn't been declined. Didn't receive the money yet but it is in the works.
Bring back.the flexbrew @jont ! ... And @kleineleh I need one of those mugs!
Oooh looks.like bad quality control on those.refurbs. ah well anyways i need something LIKE this. And an irk cup. Obviously.
So, I just finally opened this thing and it doesn't work! Is Hamilton Beach easy to work with or should I just accept this as a loss. Totally my fault for not testing this months and months ago.
@conandlibrarian Ouch! I'd take my best shot with Hamilton Beach and hope they were nice about it. Good luck!
