@algae1221 January is just as bad… everyone already “presented” and “partied” out. And all of their bills from the holidays are coming due. And everyone is so over the nasty weather - it’s not “magical” anymore, it’s just cold and icy. One of my kids is January and she rarely has anyone actually show up for her parties.

I’ve done half birthday parties so my winter kids can celebrate in the summer and it allows them to be celebrated properly.

@algae1221 @mbersiam January is just as bad. Also my mom has reminded me for the last 50 something years that I was suppose to arrive in the last week of December but instead chose mid-January. The bookkeeper in her was pissed that they had to wait a whole year to deduct me on the taxes.

Also as far as gifts were concerned. One of my christmas gifts was always held back for my birthday. And guys that I have dated in the past called me the triple whammy… christmas, my birthday and valentines.

@ironcheftoni @mbersiam I was the other way around, due in January and born early. Some years birthday is on the first day of winter and I’m not really a fan of winter. I’ve got a sibling that was also born in the week before Christmas so we got a lot of “this party is for Christmas and also algae1221’s and sibling’s birthdays” and “here’s your Christmas/birthday gift.”
Now I tell my own kids every year that I’m old enough and will be skipping my birthday and they spend a couple of months plotting to force me into having one, so it does get a little recognition in my own house at least.

@algae1221 Agreed. I celebrated my first five birthdays in the southern hemisphere, so my expectations (weather-wise) were set to disappoint me for future birthdays after relocating northward.

Growing up my sister always had a hard time having bday parties with her friends. Her birthday is just over a week b4 Christmas and no one would show up. My birthday is a few weeks after and I always had luck.

Mine’s on the 21st. About 30 years ago, I stopped allowing anyone to try to throw a party for me, and basically banned recognizing the day because the surest way to avoid yet more disappointment was to reduce the anticipation to zero. One year, back when I still had a day job, I even asked to be scheduled to work from open to close on that day, just to make triply sure that nothing could go wrong. And, honestly, at this point, there’s nothing that I could tell anyone I actually wanted as a token in recognition, anyway.

Over on Facebook, there’s a group for “Birthday Season Of The Damned”. A friend and fellow sufferer established it.

I sometimes find my lack of overall enthusiasm hard to keep a lid on; if it gets off its leash, I tend to start raining on other people’s parades, and I always regret it later, adding to the bleakness.

Oh wow it’s BEAUTIFUL! So perfect and symmetrical! I love all the silver! We always used lots of tinsel and my mom made sure it was put on one strand at a time! As kids we hated that part. As adults, yeah it’s EXTREMELY time consuming and SO WORTH IT!!

This year the tree was placed in my office behind french doors, so it can bee seen BUT CHARLIE cannot touch. I wasn’t sure how he would react so I thought I would take the conservative approach. This way I can control and supervise his interaction and hopefully next year I can move it back to the family room

Love tinsel but haven’t used it for years for fear my dog will ingest a strand or more. I miss it on the tree!! My mom had a friend who would not only put it on one piece at a time, she would take it off piece by piece and save it for the next year. Crazy stuff

On the subject of Holiday Singing

[mumblety] years ago, my daughter and I invented a holiday singing activity that became a Tradition here. Banana Carols.

“WTF is a Banana Carol?” you might wonder. It’s simple, take any song (and a lot of not-really-song pieces of music) associated with the season, and replace all of the lyrics with the word “banana”, adding additional "na"s as needed to fill out the lyrics. No more worrying about forgetting the words, skipping a verse, or singing the wrong word/verse/whatever! Suddenly all you need is the ability to carry enough of the tune to be recognizable, and you’re in!

No… in this case it’s on the winery. They are the ones not registered to deliver. I’m pretty sure most other ship-to-home states have similar processes.

@chienfou The registration costs money and time. It only exists to protect the special interests of the local wine growers and impose the morality of the teetotalers. So much for that “free market” and “getting rid of government regulation” horse shit the politicians promised to get re-elected when they weren’t primaried by someone even crazier.

yeah, I figured as much also. Not sure if casemates is the one that would have to register, since they don’t actually ship (if I am not mistaken). When I read the write ups on the coming relaxation of ship-to-home they said it was a winery registration… not sure if they are set up for ‘brokers’.
Either way, it is definitely a money maker for the state, just like having ABC stores is. It’s all about the $$$$.

This seems like a reasonable reference of state laws but the winery would have to tell meh where they can ship. And the laws are usually to protect distributors.

Indiana is in the “wine permit states” list and no one is making wine in Indiana or Alabama. The same laws get recycled through multiple states for questionable reasons.

Writing up laws they want passed on behalf of the customers of their very expensive “consulting” services, and after sizeable, certainly not quid-pro-quo, “donations” are made to the legislators’ election campaigns, usually applied to previous campaign accounts to retire the “debt” created when candidates “loan” their campaigns money. It’s a form of layering and money laundering and bribery all in one. The FEC will never look into who is paying off any candidate’s previous campaign debts.

@speediedelivery @unksol I think it is a combination of issues. I’ve had problems with every delivery for the last two weeks. One package is confirmed delivered but never showed up on my porch or security camera would have concerned.

Friday I had a new cell phone delivered w signature required. Driver signed and showed a POD about 45 min before it was actually delivered. Lots of issues

We are currently trying to find/get replaced a package with some custom ornaments in it. They were supposedly handed off in Morrow GA to USPS from UPS. They are each pointing to the other, but still no resolution.

I really think FedEx must put unrealistic expectations on their drivers so that some of them lie about times of deliveries, or reasons for delays (I had a delay explained as because I wasn’t home, but I was, and it didn’t need to be signed for, anyway.) And I had one package dumped at my house that was supposed to go 2 miles away. When I tried to find that house it was really difficult. I think the driver gave up and used my address from another package. I suspect the Alabama guy couldn’t keep up so just pretended he’d delivered them, then dumped them.

yeah, I think that is the problem. UPS scanned them “out” but USPS never scanned them “in”. When SWMBO went to the local PO the postmaster heard her story and then (ominously) started laughing when he heard the name Marrow GA as the last place they were acknowledged… I rarely have any issue with UPS, FEDEX, USPS etc. Though I DID find a package sitting on top of my car in the driveway yesterday…

I feel bad when there are 4 days in a row from one order cause I know they don’t have to come out here or walk down the drive every day as part of their route. I’d be happy to group things but sometimes amazon is not on board. I’d check a box for UPS to batch deliver So if one was off meh. Still never happens though.

@speediedelivery @unksol yeah. When I talked to my FedEx guy he mentioned there are lots of challenges right now. Dec is always rough, this year is worse b/c of Covid and on line buying trends.

They are hiring loads of temp labor and letting them loose to handle deliveries with little training.

Last week I saw a truck stop across the street. Driver got out of truck w a few boxes, took two or three steps to the edge of my neighbors driveway, bent down to drop the packages, jumped back in his truck and left. Didn’t even but the boxes on their porch!!

@Kyeh @njfan Actually about 7 or 8ish years ago I dodged one where I actually looked out the car window and saw it. It came damn close, no way to drive south away from it (golf course in the way) where I was and as the wind picked up tree limbs were falling on the street. When I lived in OK the Moore one originally had been aimed at us and veered at the last minute.

Some years after I left that area I saw a map of a tornado that went through Norman and the path went through two houses away from where I lived. Had I still lived there I am sure I would have had damage. I prefer hurricanes to tornadoes as at least you can run away from hurricanes even though the damage is more wide spread from a hurricane.

I didn’t realize how on edge I was every time a storm came through until I moved to Idaho where there are rarely thunder storms (well except they had one with hail a week after I moved there and my department accused me of bringing the storm with me LOL) and I finally relaxed about it. Now that I am back in tornado country I find I watch the sky again.

Oh, no - some houses have now started burning down - the winds are fanning the flames and the firefighters just can’t get ahead of them.

@Kidsandliz I’m not in the immediate vicinity, but entire neighborhoods less than an hour away have been destroyed. The flames have moved so fast! It’s crazy, I had planned to drive to a couple of shopping centers right in that area today. I just heard that a Target store in one of those centers has burned down. They said that downed power lines started the fires. So scary - if the winds continue there could be more fires tonight. They’re showing them on TV right now and they’re huge and raging.

@Kyeh I hope so too. I wish the snow would get here to help dampen things down. It’s still crazy gusty up here in the hills, but a little less so than earlier. The wind tore the hood off my husband’s huge old truck, (it wasn’t latched) sailed it about 50 feet and dropped it near my truck. Glad it didn’t land on it. That thing has to weigh 50 pounds. Yikes.

@Pony Whoa! Yes, that snow can’t get here soon enough! Someone on Nextdoor said that the Costco at Superior has burned down. As well as around 600 houses so far.

Glad you are safe. I can well remember the chinook winds blowing out of the foothills in late Dec to mid Feb when I was at CU. Those are some SERIOUS winds!

Yes very glad you are safe! I spent hours today watching news/people footage of the winds/fire and couldn’t believe what i saw. It was very crazy and surreal. I hope you/home continue to be in a safe place from all that’s going on.

Thanks! We’re getting a lot of snow now so that should help. I just hope we get a whole lot of ongoing precipitation to keep it all from happening again!
