Look Smart Trivia: Music Videos of the '90s
8For a musical decade that started at a low point for pop music, and ended in the boy-band and Britney era, there was some memorable stuff on MTV in between. Or at least some stuff that I spent so much time staring at that I can’t help but remember it. Here are five stills from videos released during the last fun decade. The first one to correctly name all five artists and titles will score a $5 Meh coupon. That’s, like, $2.75 in '90s money. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
@lehigh was all over yesterday’s Blurry Cereal Boxes like the Trix rabbit on Trix, or Toucan Sam on Froot Loops, or that bee on Honey Nut Cheerios, or Lucky on Lucky Charms, or…
- Cinnamon Toast Crunch
- King Vitaman
- Crispix
- Fruity Marshmallow Krisipes
- Kix
PS. Since I’m in Australia and time is weird, I’m not always as responsive to the threads as I would like. But apropos of yesterday’s discussion about boosting participation, I’m putting together a general state-of-the-Smart post and maybe a survey. Just know I’m hearing you even if I go silent sometimes, and I appreciate that you all care enough to discuss it… oh, and as far as spelling goes, I follow my general sense of “close enough.”

Once again making me thankful for not being eligible for this one. Some music nut is going to ace this one.
@cinoclav I don’t know #5. They won’t be easy for younger folks.
@cinoclav Yeah…y____x didn’t work on #1 for you either did it.
@therealjrn I didn’t even get to try them yet. I know #4 but not the others. But that site is definitely a good one regardless.
@cinoclav you want the answers?
@jrwofuga No, I’ll try to figure them out as I have time.
@jrwofuga I have 2 through 5. 1 is the mystery.
@cinoclav …like I said…
Had me worried!!
kudos on #4.
Thank You @JasonToon for your work on posting these and for slogging through and considering that kerfuffle of comments yesterday!
@stolicat here, here!!
Cereal yesterday, music videos today. Now, if this was 80’s music videos, I’d be in a tizzy. True story: my friends and I would watch MTV and log which videos we saw, and how often. If I correctly recall, Greg Kihn’s Jeopardy was played almost as much as songs from Thriller (except “Thriller”, which MTV played every hour on the hour).
Beetlejuice?
No idea.
Weezer, Buddy Holly
B52s, Roam
Training Day?

#4 looks like Glen Frey’s reflection in the mirror, but I don’t remember any 90’s hits
@curtw4 I mean #5. Phone keyboard too small
@curtw4 You’re verrry “cold” on that guess.
On a mostly unrelated note I found a music video about a hot water heater. There’s even a keytar.
@sammydog01 is it technically a keytar when it’s a keyboard taped to a broom stick?
@sammydog01 All the keytar anyone needs is in this classic Degrassi High clip:
@mossygreen @sammydog01
Keytars are for wannabe no-talent hacks.
Strap on an ironing board and you’ve got genius.
@mike808 @sammydog01 Hmm, have we perhaps at long last discovered the inspiration for the Bonzo Dog song Trouser Press?
@mossygreen @sammydog01 Ironing Board Sam is an R&B legend. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (nojhf.org) just wrapped its 50th year last weekend, where he was invited to headline
He also plays drums. Here is a clip of him on fire at the 2015 NOJHF (not my clip, but I was there for this legendary NOJHF performance):
Here’s the trailer for a documentary on him if you want more:
Wow. I’m actually here and in time to play! Well, I have 2 and 4 (the easy ones) and 5 (that was a pain but some lowrider websites gave me a clue), but 1 and 3 elude me … 3 is driving me crazy because I know I’ve seen it, I remember that red shirt and the baby blue strat.
#1 I have no clue. Should clean up that kitchen, tho …
@stolicat If you have a Windows 95 installation disc, the same group has a video on it…
@therealjrn Ooo, nice clue. Thank you. I didn’t have one of the disks, but google knows everything.
Now just that annoying #1 …
Well, if someone has #1 …
@stolicat ahem *
Thanks for the hints and help!
@stolicat Is it Runaway Train? I thought it looked a bit like Soul Asylum but didn’t see that shot in the video… Nevermind, it’s so fast I missed it when scrolling. Plugging this in here for the younguns:
@stolicat odd, that was Black Gold and then it switched
@lehigh It was still Black Gold - always great to see it again. The shot in the quiz is at 2:17 of Runaway Train. It’s really quick and the scroll often doesn’t show it.
It’s not Beetlejuice… BUT the guy in the picture was romantically linked to one of the stars of the movie… somehow he’s neither here nor there.
@JasonToon This was a fun one!
@JasonToon @therealjrn That was a very well-structured hint!
WTF. 1990’s.
/youtube Come As You Are
@f00l We’d pretty much fucked up the 70s and 80s, so in retrospect, the 90s were no surprise.
/giphy no surprise
WTF. 1990s
@mike808 I kinda liked that …
@stolicat My WTF was commentary on the pop dreck of the 90s chosen, and not the challenge of the trivia itself.
The 90s were the birthplace of EDM & Burning Man, and the popularity of derivative works we see today.

Lucky! You have Solo, Cascade Lemon Lime and Bitters, and Australian barbecue sauce. Plus the Three Sisters, little penguins, wallabies and koalas. I’m so jelly…
