Look Smart Trivia: African Countries With A Twist
4Throw away your compass. It won’t help you here. We did it with Islands, we did it with European Countries, now we’re taking Africa for a spin (see what I did there?). As always, nothing is flipped, just rotated. The first among you to ID all five countries will bring home a $5 Meh coupon code. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
Yesterday’s Modern Art Mashup didn’t come with any little cards on the wall with titles and artists. NBD for @cinoclav, who guided us through it like a born docent:
- Lyubov Popova - “Composition (Blue-Yellow-Black)”
- Laurie Simmons - “Walking Gun”
- Sol LeWitt - “Wall Drawing #340”
- Giorgio de Chirico - “Piazza d’Italia”
- Joaquin Torres Garcia - Untitled Watercolor on Paper

@tinamarie1974 Pretty sure Zimbabwe and Ethiopia are crossed… I did that at first on mine.
@raccoon81 I could have written them down wrong. Oh well if I did, shame on me
@tinamarie1974 The two countries actually looked very similar. I had written zimbabwe twice before I realized I had a problem.
@raccoon81 @tinamarie1974 Real nail-biter, this one! Keep up the good work @tinamarie1974 - your day in the sun will come!!!
Ooh, I like these, good for a first-timer! I think I know these, though one of the more convex shapes doesn’t look exactly like what I’m seeing on the maps.
@lehigh Trying for a second timer here!
@raccoon81 Looking like a winner to me. Congrats!
@JasonToon Do you have any further info on that García piece from yesterday? I find it both odd and interesting that it didn’t show up on the catalogue website. Where did you happen to find it in the first place?
@cinoclav Hmm, I found it at this auction listing - maybe it’s just been in private hands for so long, it’s not catalogued anywhere else: https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/joaquin-torres-garcia-uruguay-1874-1949-waterco-11-c-2ae48a8af7
BTW, I’m no art connoisseur, and I’d never heard of him until I went to the MoMA “greatest hits tour” when it came to Melbourne. Definitely my favorite discovery of that show.
@JasonToon Yep, that’s the same place @stolicat and I found it. Talk about an obscure work of art! It really threw me since you asked for the artist and the name of the piece. I assumed it could be found somewhere with an actual name and dug deep into the interwebs to no avail. I wonder if it was simply commissioned privately.
@JasonToon I start to worry about you when a new Trivia quiz doesn’t get posted promptly…
Like, “Damn, still no new quiz? I hope Jason’s ok. Maybe he got in a car accident or fell down a flight of steps or something…” etc.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Haha, nothing like that… today’s is supposed to be a video, but I’m working out an issue… sit tight…
