I try to send things I think are good stuff; nobody wants someone else’s broken crap. Some may be from IRKs, things that are nice but not for me. Some things are just picked out of my stash of random stuff that I have bought and squirreled away. If my recipient has a wishlist or “stuff I like” in their profile, I try to include something that’s at least in the same theme if I have it.
Would you look and it might make a smile? Grin? Then consider sending it. Stay within posted rules in the signup thread in reference to food/allergens.
Would you be embarrassed to put you username on it? Garbage or broke? Nope, leave it out.
Value is in the fun factor not the cash out of pocket. Check around you for extra stuff that might make someone giggle.
This is supposed to be fun not expensive. No need to spend money except for postage unless you want. Some people ordered item(s) and sent them direct instead of packing and mailing a box.
-my two cents and plan when stuffing a box to send in an exchange.
Other notes:
Wow. They have a wish list! Do I have to buy this? Nope. Optional to use the list.
Polite to note gender/age/size type things. None of these are part of the rules but helpful in some cases.
You can pack the box today and wait for the address to put on the outside of the box if you wish.
Do I have to do a wishlist or sizes and stuff? No but some like to personalize it if they can.
Lower your expectations. Plan on getting the worst box ever! Little lower. Good. Now this will be someone. Try not to send that box.
Finally off the soapbox.
TLDR: Have fun, don’t ghost!
@speediedelivery Yes! And this is NOT a secret santa deal despite elfster being used for sign up. This is an exchange of stuff, white elephants, irk stuff, other things kicking around that are too good to throw out, someone else might appreciate and use and isn’t trash.
Some people do research and see what the person likes. I try to just make a homemade irk. Random stuff, usually including some things that are unique to where I’m from if I have them. If I happen to know something about my recipient and have something on hand or easy to get, nice. If not I just try to send entertaining and random stuff. Sometimes it came from irks. Sometimes from other exchanges. Sometimes it’s just stuff I have around. Sometimes but more rarely it’s something I’d go get or order.
If I was a prolific crafter, I’d use my crafts. If I was a baker, treats. I’m just a dude who fiddles with gadgets and shops at meh, so a lot of it is gadgets and stuff from meh. Coming from this viewpoint, when someone sends trash, it makes me think they are maybe Oscar the grouch.
Last year I included a couple bags of chips that my area was known for and a Stroopwafel jar mix (bc meh always sells them). They were brand new from the store and if the person didn’t want to eat them oh well I was out $5 (my person liked them by the way). I would eat that stuff and fresh baked goods from someone. I’m gonna do the same this year bc I think it’s cool to send something from your area that no one else has access to but that me.

Consider if you would want to receive what you are sending… it does not have to be meh… or junk… everyone does it differently.

Get something from an antique store. Or maybe a regional delicacy they wouldn’t have access to. Or don’t send anything and make off like a bandit.

@medz @Pony That dog should be smoking.
I can’t wait until next year. I should be done getting my house in order after the plumbing replacement and I should have a ton of stuff to give.
