I need a recover my youth technique that filters out, among other items:

I’m sure i will add to that list, once I engage a working technique.
I miss it too. Still my favorite platform even this far into Mediocre’s life. We could recreate everything @shawn built and it wouldn’t be the same. Maybe someday still worth doing though.
If Meh forums had the option of paginated forums (instead of PITA infinite scroll),
and had the option of clicking on a uid to look up previous user posts (perhaps this one off/on by user choice),
then I would be pretty happy with those added “from deals.woot” features.
A lot of good stuff vanishes into the ether here (by site design), because no one will ever remember enough detail to track it down. Google search as applied to this site is pretty brutal.
@mflassy
For persons whose profile is visible, the back-looking limit seems to be 30 days or similar.
And that doesn’t help much if you can’t remember with certainly who posted what; or what you want goes back in time to yield results past the # limit Google wishes to cooperate with; or in order to have a successful search, you need more of the specific language than you can remember.
Useful things get tucked away in odd places here. A local site search, or a paginated forum list, or a true clickable uid posting history with way more than 30 days results would help.
To me, that would bring here the best functionality of deals,woot, excepting the missing people. : (
How does slickdeals manage to keep discount garbage, spam listings, and trolls from destroying the site, and stopping the listings and votes from bemanipulated by the sellers of junk?
Any idea?
Anyway, yes pls also no downvoting.
And no reputation that becomes a popularity contest.
I did manage to become The Great Grand Pooh-Bah a few times for a few days, but only after the Chinese shill masterminds already owned the place.
It was oddly satisfying to make it to the top only after the site had grown entirety disreputable, and most of the really lovely and classy people had fled.
@RedOak I’m going to step up and defend her (it was a her, not a him). You know, there’s a point at which people are spread so thin that it’s nearly impossible to do the work they’re assigned, much less do all the babysitting that was required.
I really think that when @JumboWoot left, it was the final blow. I miss Jay; he could be funny, and in the beginning, when things were getting started, everyone had fun. Okay, now I’m made myself sad. Dammit.
Somehow, perhaps the #'s of shills and junk posts just overwhelmed Deals.Woot.
Whereas Slickdeals had, I guess, a notably large community, lots of mods and vol mods, and profitability, long before the shills found them?
They must have some way of killing off the shill voting and junk. Perhaps just lots of employees and volunteers.
Anyway, SD is fine for what is it. But it’s not a community of friends in anything like the same way as DW or here. I wouldn’t want Meh to resemble that.
@f00l The spammers and shills were able to get a foothold and proliferate at deals.woot because their posts lasted long enough there to have a positive effect. I do not know if probation was handed out there like it is in the regular forums.
(As vol.mod, I usually start at a year+ probation for a first-time offender. Multiple spam posts usually gets them a decade, and the really really awful gets a century.)
@therealjrn Nah – I’m not that brutal. Spam posts, sure, but I far rather just post cat pics to calm a heated discussion versus deleting posts and/or probating wooters.
That opinion was based upon experience with several other commenters… and a conversation with a manager at Woot who contacted me privately to apologize. He acknowledged he had seen a lot of her censoring comments on her own deals and her getting nasty.
Whether she was the sole moderator or not and spread too thin is a completely seperate issue.
@narfcake Missed these when they launched. The first is sold out, but ironically (and probably intentionally) the second one is still available for purchase.
@somf69 I miss the old meh.com. You know, when they had “community engagement” people who got paid to talk to us in the forums and star in stupid videos so we could make GIFs out of them.
Tho I like the way they look when pristine, I have to be so careful with them. Can’t wear them in the same casual, careless way I sometimes wear t-shirts.
We have two out of three here at meh, though.
/8ball cool forum
Yes
/8ball great for laughs
As I see it, yes
/8ball getting deals
My sources say no
@narfcake how many edits did that take? LOL
@Kidsandliz The second time, actually!
@narfcake The 8ball is being pretty generous with two of those answers.
@Signorino yea ikr the deals on this site are way worse (just kidding dave love you)
I just miss forums in general, reddit has taken over the forumverse and it’s all bots, shills and shenanigans now… (imo)
@hisgrossness Yup everywhere you go everyone just wants to politicize everything. Can’t just sign in and goof off with people.
@Targaryen New employeee alert!
/giphy hi
/giphy not a stalker
No, but I know where you work. Bwahaha!
@sammydog01 Oh yeah, uh, spoilers, @Targaryen exists.
@hisgrossness Morning’ how’s it going?
The forums were more active, diverse and conversational there. I definitely miss them.
You can’t go home again.
@Barney But I need to. I left some stuff back home I can’t do without. My youth, my optimism, my joi de vivre.
@moondrake I’ve tried, I really have; it’s not possible. And it hurts too much.
@moondrake

So … where do I get a working basic technique?
@Barney
/giphy hugs
@f00l I love purple.
@sammydog01 Stop it, you’re gonna make me cry.
@Barney I love sloths.
@moondrake But it’s not purple.
@Barney
/giphy "purple sloth"
@f00l Show me the purple.
@Barney
/image purple pretend sloth
@f00l You win.
@Barney Sorry, I missed your reply among the larger posts. I actually did Google for purple sloths, but colorizing them IMHO was a very bad idea.
@moondrake That looks like a flashback from the hippy dippy 60’s
I don’t miss what it was in the end. (Except for the last few days.)
I tried a little playing around with the backups at archive.org after the shutdown.
They appear to be incomplete in some respects (lacking all the ATC topics), tho they were performed periodically.
So perhaps it is possible to go thru various date archives if someone wanted to find something.
But it’s a painful interface.
And they didn’t catch the very last day. Maybe two.
: (
meh disagreed at first, but me too.
I miss it too. Still my favorite platform even this far into Mediocre’s life. We could recreate everything @shawn built and it wouldn’t be the same. Maybe someday still worth doing though.

Going to a profile and filtering to show added comments isn’t good enough for you?

@snapster If you ever recreate it, here’s some suggestions.
I admit I liked posting the occasional deal, but doubt I still have the oomph to find them, much less to post them.
@Shrdlu
Omg PM’s. Yes yes, pls.

@Shrdlu two things other than the obvious constant spam deals killed Deals.Woot for me:
(Perhaps, the spam, #1 and #2 are related.)
@RedOak I’m going to step up and defend her (it was a her, not a him). You know, there’s a point at which people are spread so thin that it’s nearly impossible to do the work they’re assigned, much less do all the babysitting that was required.

@f00l Downvotes and heavy moderation/probation is probably what keeps SD posts in check. And given that neither are desired here …
@narfcake
Somehow, perhaps the #'s of shills and junk posts just overwhelmed Deals.Woot.

@Shrdlu I disagree about @Faugh…

@JumboWoot Hi!!
N/C.
SOMETHING SOMETHING WE’RE* STILL IN #DEALS.WOOT SOMETHING
*BY WE’RE I MEAN LIKE 6 COMPLETE MORONS.
@meh you know, we could rename the channel… might stop the random people who wander in during woot-offs trying to get BOCs…
Steal the voting system from slashdot.org, and give me some cashback. I’ll quit slickdeals so quickly…
On special:
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/i-miss-the-old-woot-3?ref=meh_com
Ragequitting is regularly priced, but you can use today’s coupon to make it a bit cheaper:
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/never-shopping-at-woot-again?ref=meh_com
@narfcake Missed these when they launched. The first is sold out, but ironically (and probably intentionally) the second one is still available for purchase.
@ACraigL Sold out only because it was on special yesterday. The regular listing is this:
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/i-miss-the-old-woot?ref=meh_com
@narfcake
They gonna have any great coupons for the rest of the week?
Was way way way too busy to spend money stupidly yesterday.
Or I prob would have done just that.
@f00l Your guess is as good as mine. I’m not even sure if I’m still subscribed to the newsletters.
@f00l I spent stupid money. The mail guy is gonna hate me on Friday. Damn free shipping.
I miss the old meh.com, you know when they actually had good stuff every day…
@somf69 When was that?
@somf69 I miss the old meh.com. You know, when they had “community engagement” people who got paid to talk to us in the forums and star in stupid videos so we could make GIFs out of them.
@medz Remember when we played Oregon Trail? And that add a part coloring thing we did?

@somf69 I love that @snapster was the first to like this… you sir, win again
I miss deals.woot on a t-shirt, similar to the self-trolling t-sheet Woot
offered yesterday … ?
(This one)
I’d consider buying an I miss deals.woot t-shirt.
If those existed, what color shoulder they be? Black? Slate? Purple?
Someone wanna mock one up? Since I’m ineffably lazy about that?
(Apologies)
@f00l Cream
@sammydog01
I am leery of white and off-white t-shirts.
Tho I like the way they look when pristine, I have to be so careful with them. Can’t wear them in the same casual, careless way I sometimes wear t-shirts.
@f00l And a wine.woot (soon)
