How about an "ice breaker" thread?
16Let’s try this out as a topic where people can jump in and introduce themselves, say how they got here, share anything fun or interesting about themselves, or even just say hi?
Whether you’re new, back after a long while, or long-time lurkers deciding to speak up, it can be hard to find a way in to a community full of regulars, so consider this an easy place to chime in.

@dave
if you start this kind of thread, you gotta go first
so no one post until @dave does
Ha, sounds good, but according to the rules (I just made up), all I have to do to qualify is say hi.
Hi!
Answering how I got here is kind of a weird existential question, I guess, since ‘here’ didn’t exist until I helped make it.
I guess I’ll go…
Hi! I’m @earlyre!
Long time lurker, occasional poster, habitual over sharer, and on some other forums, thread killer( they seem to stop after i post. hopefully not here)
My brother, who at the time worked IT at UT Southwestern, introduced me to WOOT! back around Christmas of '05.
was a daily woot visitor, and occasional poster there through the acquisition, and Exodus of most of the OG staffers.
been visiting Mercatalyst properties since the posting on the deals.woot forums about the launch of Mediocre Labs, and project…umm… the one where you gave us like $20 amazon gift cards, to buy y’all stuff to decorate the new offices…I sent 2 Red Swingline Staplers…
then got the Kickstarter notification for Meh.
i also backed the kickstarter for casemates, IIRC…
VMP from day zero, and plan on staying one, until you can pry that status from my cold dead fingers.
Let’s keep it going. I’m @Vectors. I don’t remember how I heard about Meh except it was sometime after I started medical school in 2014. The deals furnished my med student apartment and were a welcome distraction from the grind of medical education. I joined VMP for a while and remember getting a fukubukoro or 2, but eventually cancelled when I decided I had too much crap (big mistake, because I joined again as a lowly meh-mber). Nowadays I mostly just lurk and post in the IRK threads when I get one.
@Vectors nice, what type of medicine do you practice at
@Cerridwyn I am a radiologist at a community hospital in a mid size city in the northeast
@Cerridwyn is an RN (now stands for retired nurse), I live in So Cal so I can make lots of digs n threads about snow. I worked most of my career in home health, the last significant chunk for a faith based social safety net health care system that the home health department which always skated on a thin edge fell over it during COVID (I hate to… bites fingers, according to @thunderchick I can’t say that here)
I’m an omnivorous bisexual (Thank you for that term, I love it meh) pagan who many of my friends claim should have been hippy but was born a little too late.
Bright blesssings to you all
Well, ok.
@blaineg Description unclear — are you the guy getting on and/or off, or are you the Wagenborg?
@xobzoo Yes.
/showme an ice breaker thread
I love the question mark after “Culture?” on the pink bubble top right…
@OnionSoup I like the fun facks.
/showme a thread breaking ice
I still have my Sansa (currently running Rockbox) from the old woot! days… And I remember many conversations about Leak Frogs. Anyone else remember deals on moofi … ?
I believe it was DealNews that tipped me off to purchase the daily deal of Free VMP as my first purchase over here…Dec 25, 2014. Eventually I did let it lapse, but have kept it since the warning surfaced in 2017 about it being phased out.
Occasionally I still pull out my Mediocre socks from Feb 2015.
@Euniceandrich yes across the board. I have some sansa with the tiny screen but. Phones were catching up and I’ve never been big into music. Like I didn’t just listen to it walking around. So they never got used. Was more to try/give away
Never got a leakfrog. Box of woot monkies though. Just. Sitting there. Almost like a banana. A banana in a chair.
Have meh socks somewhere in the laundry room
I’m barnabee. I guess you could call me one of the OG Meh forum members. I used to hang out at Deals Woot until that closed up. I heard about this new place opening called Meh, so I came over to see what was going on. I really liked it, but not so much now. So I’m not around here much anymore.
Some of you may know me by “I love purple” Barney. I still love purple, just not Meh so much anymore.
Things happen, people change…
@barnabee some of us miss you
@barnabee the dog has a purple octopus in your honor.
@barnabee I’m glad I dropped in, if only for your comment. I miss you, friend. And, yes, the good old days of meh gone by.
/giphy purple
@carl669 Your dog has good taste!
@joelmw I’ll never forget you, you know that, don’t you?
Formerly on Woot pre-Amazon days. (it used to be good back then).
I remember seeing a link when Meh was still a month or two old and people saying “it was founded by the original Woot people” and had “been a kickstarter”, I was intrigued and came for a visit… and I’ve been checking it out regularly ever since.
I don’t buy as much as I used to (kids college tuition now), but I still hang around.
/giphy hi
I was originally on woot… not sure how I found Meh as I do not surf the web or visit new sites very often.
I recall my first purchase was a case of mickey-mouse band-aids for like $5 and as a mother of young children at the time who was barely surviving in the economy It was SUCH A GREAT DEAL I was absolutely hooked. I’ve been in and out of the forums/site. and was a goat, probably VMP before it was phased out but ended it and am now a meh-mber and in the ink club.
eta: oh yes, I own a farm in the midwest. I work from home and I love what I do so much, I volunteer to do the same work after-hours (I feel that if I leave it that open-ended the guesses on what I do would run wild… so have at it if you want to guess what I do).
and now one of my “young children” I mentioned above will be an adult in a month.
@mbersiam crush grapes w your feet to make wine.
@mbersiam
I’m guessing that you’re a farrier that re-hooves horses. Or something else with animals like cutting the sheep’s coat.
Woot > deals.woot > mediocre > Kickstarter > meh.
Also I’ve been online for … uh, over 30 years already. Is the modern web even still usable on Lynx?
@narfcake try lynx 2
I was placed on this earth to eventually become this particular website’s Minder of Proper Battery Storage and Contentedness. I believe all websites have such officials, so I’m just a nondescript, average kinda MoPBSaC in a crowd of so many just like me. I feel ok about it, I guess.
@shahnm Also master of punnery and former protector of Glen, before he evidently moved on to retirement?
@Kyeh Given budget constraints, we all have to wear multiple hats. It’s a burden, to be sure, but we bear it with… only minor aches and pains and just a bit of agita.
Not all heroes wear capes.
@Kyeh OH MY GOD THEY RETIRED GLEN!!!
@Kyeh @shahnm
That just makes yours all the more special!
@Kyeh @macromeh
@shahnm I’m. Sorry. I can’t help myself.
Does this bother you?
@unksol
/giphy absolute horror
@shahnm I mean they are in cellophane still. Can’t short. Low discharge. I know where they are. They are available to be rolled out. Needed 5 AAA today.
The only thing I think you could complain is the alkaline not being in the fridge but it’s pretty chilly in here. I’ll put them out the back door if it makes you feel better?
@unksol but but but b… none of that is the fridge…
Batteries need to be in the fridge. Definitely need to be in the fridge.
Wapner’s at seven.
@shahnm my grandma was batteries in the freezer so. While I accept your fridge position. All the days I have seen is. Colder is better. And it’s going to be cold out there for a while.
Actual temp cycles I imagine are bad? But it very static inside. And going to be very cold outside for a while.
@shahnm and if it makes you feel better. They are all actually in stuff except the two in the charger that just got taken out. And replaced by spares. And the spares which nimh don’t dieike nicad. So… Eh?.. Obviously it they get rotated out and some are just in flight. A storage solution will occur.
But NiMaH
@unksol
/showme shahnm enforcing battery storage in the fridge despite unksol’s protestations
@mediocrebot Rockin’, bot!
I’ll even forgive the double + sided battery in my comment bubble…
@mediocrebot @shahnm was simply saying that IF I were going cold storage. Come on. Freezer my man. Although idk how that works for Nimh. And that chunk of alkaline are the first I have bought in. Decades.
That’s actually because I realized there are some things I put batteries in and never see for a decade… So … maybe not a good place for rechargeables. Also supposedly batteries are recyclable in my area so… In some rare cases where you want long term battery life… Maybe. But yes in general. Rechargeables.
But I so rarely actually use things that use batteries though. Like. Never. Couple of sensors. Everything thing else. Might have a rechargeable in it. But it’s never used. So it never needs recharged. So… Mmm. What am I doing? Need a reason to drain/recharge or. It’s just. Stand by/wasted .
Rechargeable in a remote might be… Meh/pointless depending on how much power it uses
@shahnm Looks like a graphic depiction of Newspeak:
“Refrigerated battery storage is DoublePlusGood!”
@macromeh All batteries are equal, but some batteries (the refrigerated ones) are more equal than other batteries.
@macromeh @shahnm from the classic novel “Battery Farm” by George Orwatt
@macromeh @ybmuG A fine read. Much more powerful than his first novel, CR1984…
Oh, and in the early days I thought there were only two choices, Buy It or click the meh face. So, every time I’d make a purchase, I’d break my streak.
@Euniceandrich So a business model that entices shoppers with the addictive dopamine kick of OCD button streak creation, such that the more you come to the website, the more you are psychologically incentivized not to make a purchase.
That would be a peak-Meh business model, even for Meh…
@Euniceandrich @shahnm I stopped clicking real quick. But to each their own.
@Euniceandrich @shahnm @unksol
It doesn’t surprise me that you’re not interested in clicky face! I always had you pegged as a no nonsense kind of player, here for the meat and potatoes!
@Euniceandrich @Lynnerizer @shahnm I mean once you miss a day… And it’s a competition.
But also I felt a little bad at first like you were down voting it. When maybe I just wasn’t needing it that second.
Knivesandspeakerdocks.com (it’s been dead for a few years) was a thing for a long time pointing to meh.com and I used that link just cause. I didn’t buy every knife. Or most speaker docks. I never agreed to them going away.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hi!
Chienfou is a veiled reference to my (French) heritage. I grew up in the Midwest, went to France for 6 months after high school. Came back to the US & moved to Colorado where I met SWMBO. Married in 1977. Hopped around Minnesota and Wisconsin opening stores for a Hardee’s franchisee in the late '70s. Ended up in Central Alabama as a franchisee for an ice cream chain. Then a career change when the mall we were in tanked. Ended up with a 2 person construction company doing small jobs locally then got involved in the fire department and EMS when I moved to the town I live in now. I ended up getting invited to go back to school and getting a nursing license at the behest (and the expense) of the community hospital we took our patients to most frequently. Became an RN and worked for 30 years in the ER at that hospital. “Retired” this summer but still work PRN (on occasion). Currently I’m doing a ton of traveling with my wife of 47 years.
Not sure how exactly I ended up on meh. Was involved with woot for a good bit years ago, but lost interest when they sold out to Amazon. I’ve been involved in the community here for quite a while and was GOAT during a month in the height of the COVID pandemic. I’ve kept my VMP up all this time since I consider it as almost an entertainment fee - sort of like paying for Netflix.
Oh… and I have 2 cats (and 2 grown-ass-adult kids)
@chienfou yea but. Cats need you.
Just got a new tire cover!
@chienfou What’s that word?
@Kyeh
Not a clue !! (it mehbe in Klingon?)
@chienfou I wonder if AI created it?!
@Kyeh
Oh, I hadn’t thought of that. It was an item available to me free from Vine and I thought the graphic fit my nickname well.
@chienfou Oh, I see!
I find ice breakers fascinating. We should up our game there. Russia was going to way out pace everyone till they tanked their program cause of Ukraine.
Oh. You meant the social thing. Not the cool ship design thing. My bad.
I have to many cats and since I’m a dead goat you… Well I was going to say Google but… They’ve gone down hill. Does site search still work or?
@unksol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear-powered_icebreaker
Also hope I didn’t derail this accidentally. Lol.
Battleship newjersey and numerous other historical channels waste my time
Found the blame thread
https://meh.com/forum/topics/baaaaaaad-behavior-march-2023-scapegoat-blame-thread
And the way too many cat/show your pet thread that went with it. Do with that info what you want.

If you have interest in Suzuki 3 cylinder l.0 liters. There’s some of that too
I saw this today, might be an ice breaker…
EDIT: Not an ice breaker, but owned by the guy who owns Walker’s Cay in the Bahamas outright…and I was right next to it today. TIL!
@PooltoyWolf interesting bow. Looks to small for an icebreaking power plant. But too industrial for a yaght? Little much for a fishing vessel?
Definitely not an expert on ships but what’s it’s intended purpose? I dig it.
@unksol Seems to be an all-purpose oceangoing pleasure vessel for her very wealthy owner. From what I can gather, the bow is currently missing some fascia or a facade.
@PooltoyWolf hmm I’m not sure on the statistics but there are a lot of seized Russian boats.
Was being polite before. You can put a boat on a ship you can’t put a ship on a boat. Those “small” supports
/youtube USS New Jersey drydock
@PooltoyWolf
I was acquired by Meh in a batch of copywriters coming up on our “best by” dates.
@jouest only a matter of time until you end up in an IRK
@jouest meh. Everyone knows those dates are entirely made up.
@jouest
So I guess that means ‘The Best is yet to come’ …correct?
