the kind made of cast iron on the end of a long handle and you warm it up in your woodstove or campfire, then you carefully (how?) put bread in it to toast.
@heartny@Kyeh@Lynnerizer Pushing the nose down to lower the bread would have made it even cooler. There was a show me a long while back on here that had the coolest kid shelves and bins for kids to store their stuff. That also needed to be an actual product.
@heartny@Kyeh@yakkoTDI I guess that one SORT OF makes some semblance of sense, because the ‘warm’ setting is the only one meant for warming and not actually slow cooking…heh. (Hence the use of ‘low’ and ‘high’ being separate from a theoretical ‘medium’.)
EDIT: My gut feeling is also that the ‘warm’ setting is in actuality a lower temperature than ‘low’, further supporting its odd position on the dial. Though, in that case, I suppose it would make more sense for it to go before ‘low’ rather than after ‘high’. Perhaps I’m overthinking it.
How about an affordable toaster that just quickly and silently makes properly scorched toast, pops up reliably, and handles a bagel correctly? I might even buy such a thing, since I have no idea where my current toaster is hiding.
@werehatrack I had one like that. Kenmore long slot one (so much more efficient when you only have a tiny bit of kitchen counter and this one was far thinner than those on the market now but could toast a bagel half). It finally broke. I can not find a toaster that toasts evenly now (look inside and bunches of the wires don’t heat up in places), let alone one of the long skinny ones that are actually small (those that I have seen are huge compared to the kenmore).
@Kidsandliz@werehatrack Up until about five years ago, when I bought my first toaster oven, I had this Rowenta toaster that was manufactured in West Germany, not Germany, so before 1990. It did a fine job with sliced bread, English muffins, and bagels. Over all those years, the only repair it needed was to resolder one wire that came loose. Sometimes I wish I still had it because my Wolf countertop oven takes so long to toast.

@PooltoyWolf absolutely one of our family favorites… 35 years ago.
@rustyh3 I grew up with it and watch it often, so it doesn’t affect me…but in hindsight, some of the scenes are pretty creepy for young children! LOL

@heartny Is that real?!! It’s so cool!
@Kyeh I don’t think so. I generated it with ChatGPT. Wish it was real though. Would totally buy one.
@heartny @Kyeh
Me too!

@heartny Do you have any designer inventor friends who could make one? Seems like it would be a hit!
@heartny @Kyeh For me, the nonsensical number order on the dial was the main giveaway.
@heartny @PooltoyWolf Oh, hah - I didn’t look that closely.
@heartny @Kyeh @PooltoyWolf Nonsensical number order? You haven’t seen my crock pot.

George Forman Toaster, AKA your cheap knockoff turned on its end.
@hchavers If you turn a toaster on its end you can use it to reheat pizza.
@hchavers @heartny Brilliant!
@hchavers @heartny @Kyeh Or, grilled cheese sandwiches. (1/2 per level)

@werehatrack how about a bagel that’s cut properly?
@werehatrack I had one like that. Kenmore long slot one (so much more efficient when you only have a tiny bit of kitchen counter and this one was far thinner than those on the market now but could toast a bagel half). @kittykat9180 @werehatrack For bagel slicing, this guillotine thing works perfectly. I have a white one; I wish it were red!
