When I had the heat vents on the floor I was lucky to get any heat as my bunch would plop on top of the vents. The first time they experienced A/C out of those vents they were not happy campers.
@Kidsandliz that is a air intake. Air intakes are in the walls about that height, or in the ceiling. outputs are floor registers. I should vacuum it. It has some dust/fur going on. But everything has a layer of fur these days.
I keep it in the 50s to low 60s and run the fireplace sometimes so. Most of them don’t camp on heat vents. They have heated beds/pads/cuddle buddies.
Sometimes they just get on top of cabinets because they can. And cats.
@Kidsandliz meant to say in this house/northern half of the country. I have never lived down south and I guess if your primary issue was cooling instead of heating it could make sense to reverse the intake/exhaust flow. Is that a thing?
@unksol maybe put a filter in the air intake vent? I did that and was shocked at how much cat hair was there (also had one at the furnace level but I added one on the air intake at the wall). Of course then you’d have to play being a cat to get at it to replace it/clean it out.
@Kidsandliz it’s been that dirty for a long time. I don’t think the intakes suck in much car hair. It tends to be all over everything… Well I was going to say ground level but… They don’t say at ground level. But either way I don’t think it sucks that much.
The do randomly pull the floor grates out. Because. Cat.
@unksol My cats would knock toys down floor grates and then sit there for several weeks staring at the floor grate if I didn’t fish out their lost toy (well if they weren’t parked on top of it hogging all the hot air).
@Kidsandliz well… None of their actual toys would be able to fall down the gate. But everything is a toy. Trimmer guides. Small screwdrivers. Other tools.

@Kyeh Shortie, Georgia, and Fuzzers are from Riley’s first litter of kittens on 6/8/2018. Sam Hooker, Stephanie Plum, Bear, and Ghost are from her second litter on 10/13/2018. In a four month period she had 13 kittens. Once her second litter were weened she was spayed. She was suppoed to be spayed after her first litter but she escaped. She was good mama cat but she was too good at her job.

@Kyeh @unksol I hear you. My aunt died last year and we took in her 14 year old cat. At the time he had nine cats. It was unbearable for him and us. We did everything we could but our 23 year old boy died of a mouth infection and Opie was gone less than a week later. Our vet said he died of a heart attack or a broken heart.
@kjady You are supposed to sleep on the couch. Right? Oh wait. If you did that there’d be 8 cats on you on the couch. I only have 4 on a twin bed - that bed according to them is apparently not my bed - and it requires cat relocation to be able to get in. Of course they just jump right back on and settle on my feet, near my head, curled in a knee, etc.
@Kidsandliz I love my cats, don’t get me wrong, but they only get free reign until it’s actually sleeping time. They then get kicked to their side of the bed or they go find the giant poof bed in the living room. Some also go outside in good weather. They know better than to try and sleep on me, I’m too mobile and they prefer not getting squashed.

Kitkat used to do that to me going to bed when I’d try and sleep on my back but I’m more of a side sleeper anyway, would rollover. Hed paw at the covers too to get lifted up and in and out a little then leave after a few hours… But I’ve never slept all that well anyway. With this mess. They are always doing something. He wasn’t bad in the morning but with the many there are rounds to make.

@allergycheryl We’ve got six grey conventional tabbies (mix of stripe types and shades) at the moment because we rescued a momcat and three kittens back in November, and they’re still here. Plus, we have a bullseye grey, and a bicolor that’s half grey mackerel. No orange tabbies at the moment, but we have a calico who has a plaintive mew and face that’s restricted weapons grade.

Toby’s most aggravating new thing is he’ll come thundering into the room and charge across the bed while I’m asleep to leap on the dresser and stare out the window at a squirrel or something.
@kjady @Kyeh @unksol One of mine has decided that when I sleep on my side what you are to do is walk up my leg and then settle on my hip stretch across my lower ribs. Another one prefers that I sleep on my back with my legs bent up because then clawing at the covers until she gets under them so she can sleep in the “tent” is what her mission then becomes. Another sleeps across my ankles and the last sleeps curled in a bent knee. Of course the prime place is by my head. Pecking order who gets to sleep there at any given time depends on who is present. Then the others present retreat to their above mentioned spots depending on who they are.

@unksol @Kyeh A few years ago our daughter visited us and brought her cat along. Her cat was kind of nervous about our dog (who was actually fine with cats) and took refuge on the top of one of the kitchen cabinet (leap to the counter, leap to the top of the frig, leap to the top of the cabinet).
This was a revelation to our two cats (who get along fine with the dog but, you know, are cats) and ever since, they follow the same route from time to time. They are so overweight now, I am surprised that the butterballs can still make it.
@Kyeh @macromeh lol KitKat used to jump from the ground to my shoulders. No one else does this. He never tried to get on top of the fridge or cabinets though There also is a cat tree on a shelf above the living room he used to go to. Dartanyan learned that.

It appears this service detects anything over about 4MB as “not an image” and I just leave my camera at the highest setting normally. So they are often 3.5-5MB. All of crushers that I tried were 4MB+ till the headshot

Literally all they are is a main lint brush. You know that red felt. That can rotate a little. And two other fixed strips so the main one picks up stuff, you pull it back and the strip pulls it off the main on and pulls it into the chamber. Push it forward it pulls out what you just picked up pulling it back.
Works best on a smoothish taunt surface. Won’t work on things that get bunched up. But way better than the pet attachment on my shark. I was honestly surprised it worked as well as it does.
Sheets into the wash/dryer… All hair. This first. Actually worked. Just FYI if your house is full of pet hair

@Kyeh @unksol Actually I use this to remove cat hair from the cats (I use the side with the prongs sticking out) and my shirt and jeans after doing the cats (using the flat side) although you have to hold your shirt enough so it won’t bunch up. I use it on the chair too. Tape works better on clothes, the chair… but this gets quite a bit up.

@Kidsandliz @unksol I have one like that that I use to brush my cat, but it has short nubs on the back. I hadn’t thought of using it on clothes and surfaces. Works great on the cat, although sometimes he decides he’s had enough and starts biting it.

@Kidsandliz @Kyeh I have. Or had one of those too. IDK where it went. Silicon lint rollers are also a thing. So the back side working wouldn’t surprise me. They would get full so quickly trying to clean the sheets/furniture for me though. Tape would have to be replaced every 6 inches

@unksol I have the ted brushes and use them a lot, but that “self-cleaning” feature of the Chom-chom is what intrigues me. I do only have the one kitty, but he’s big!
@Kyeh all of this style work the same way. Tried to take a picture. The gap on the left is spring loaded I’m only holding it open to see if you can see the little bit of felt.
Basically there is the main roller that pick up the hair with a wiper in the middle. So you push it and it picks up a ton of hair. When you pull it back it rotates and the wiper pushes up against another thin strip of that red lint fabric that holds on to it a little flap. The volume forces it into the hopper, and there’s one on each end. So you just roll it back and forth pretty… Aggressively.
I don’t know how it would work in a “light” fur situation. But I get a bunch. Enough to pop the hopper open. Several times if I’ve been lazy
@Kyeh also. The knock off may have weaker springs or worse fabric. Or… IDK. Maybe chomchom is a real brand. Just sounds like generic Chinese made up brands to me. So. It could absolutely be better. The mechanism would be the same. The execution… You never know.

@Kyeh I think I was just desperately googling how to get hair out in the wash/dryer lol and ran into them on amazon. They absolutely work on flat surfaces. I was tempted to do a before and after but I’ve been sleeping on the couch just cause and that was too much for people to see lol. Did do some midnight cleaning but just now finished up just a few spots and the sides. After having already emptied it several times. Absolutely does work on beds/sheets/furniture. Probably harder on clothes but at least I can prevent them from rolling around on those. Mostly.

@Kyeh not on their own… I’m pretty sure I can make them run in circles with a laser pointer. White patches are very effective with one. They can see it. And it’s very bright. And they know that it’s on them… But they can’t feel it. They look very confused before they try and grab themselves

The cats as we’ve established are my fault of course. Yes they are a lot. Especially when you see them all at once. But it’s a pretty big house. They just clustered cause they could see the bottom of the bowls and I was topping up

Just to clarify. They don’t live down stairs. They have full run short of two bedrooms upstairs/the bonus room that are not used. And the garage/laundry room for. You known. Chemical reasons. Antifreeze (glycol) compounds are tasty to cats and a death sentence. I’m sure things in the laundry room are too. But aslo restricted I’n the event of kids being present. So full basement. Full main floor. Upstairs living room. Supposed to be kids and a wife in this space at some point. But lol. Then they each just get… 4-5 cats? And the upstairs bedroom would be open? IDK.
They can go every where I go. The cast actually on me rotates a little but they’ve got lots of space.

Some one is finally using the pine pellet litter boxes! They have only been sitting there ignored for 2 weeks. At least. With litter attractant. Guinane was in one when I went to scoop this morning. She is a very good girl even if some people call her a void kitty :p. She’s a witch kitty.
You may wonder why I’m so excited about this. I would never have bothered with three cats. That was fine. But with this many. Pine pellets turn into saw dust when they get wet. Cause cats you know. Scratch around to cover it. You can have a sifting litter pan. They/gravity just knock it through. If they do that you just clean out the bottom pan/top up the pine as needed. Less scooping required. Less emptying required. So cleaner litter boxes. So less scooping and less"excuses" not to use them. Also because urine is sterile and it’s just wood chips it can be dumped in a pile in the back yard to compost. Instead of hauling 2 150 lb trash cans full of clay litter every week or two. Yes that is what happens. If even just half of them were to start using them. That would drastically improve the situation. They may not. But. At least some progress.
Pine is also cheaper ($6 for 50lb) and dust free although not big factors for me . Obviously have to scoop the poop if they did it there. And I’m not taking the clay away. It would be preferable if they figured out to piss in the pine and shit in the clay.
On the interwebs some have successfully moved their whole herd/shelter to just pine litter. Crossing fingers some more decide it’s a better place to piss lol

Technically the root cause of all most all of this. She really does not like me. I thought I had her with some chicken at one point. But did not work out.

@Kyeh normally she runs away/around me. And i go out of my way to walk around her just cause I know she doesn’t like me “coming at her” and… I don’t know what else do do with her at this point. I mean I try and give her treats still but otherwise I just let her be.
I find her cuddling with other kitties. Sleeping in the windows etc. So I hope she’s not miserable. I could tackle her and get her spayed and let her loose I guess. But. That seems like a bad idea at this point.

@unksol Huh - I guess some cats just aren’t that social. Maybe she’ll come around eventually? My brother’s cat started out so fearful she’d run and hide whenever I visited, but now she lets me pat her and even pick her up sometimes. I suppose since there are all those other cats they don’t necessarily feel any need to get friendly with you, though.

Most likely the issue is I was trying to catch a possum or racoon. Under the garage. I think I caught her first. As a maybe 2 month kitten. Cause I didn’t realize they’d taken over. So she was in the live trap alone for… Not forever but possibly a few hours. Before I heard Alex and Dartanyan. Crying like 3 rooms over and through a window.
Maybe I should have just let her go but I took her inside, Alex ran for it up a hill, Dartanyan just… Let me pick him up. So I took them inside. Reset the trap for Alex cause now I’m worried he ran off… And they are alone.
Caught mom. Hershey. Well. I have two out of three inside. I guess. Just put her with them and try and get the last one then figure it out. I do need them out from under the garage. Then I got Alex and Watcha
So Snickers was probably the only one alone in the trap. Possibly for a little while. till her brothers started crying First brought inside. She just. Doesn’t want touched. She listens and knows her name. She’s not hurting anything. Does what she wants. But is never going to be a lap kitty.
@Kyeh also. I’m pretty sure almost every cat I’ve had would get used to people coming over and show up for scritches. Except the really fearful ones. If they don’t tolerate me. Probably no. Everyone else would learn. I just. Literally never have visitors. So. They don’t learn things are ok. If I had people n over I’m sure they would. Plus the indoor only ones. Have never really known fear. So shaking some treats would probably work. The one that would hide has spent the outside/been taught to be wary.

@unksol I live in 525 sf. Not room for much more junk. They have other cat beds (well and two of them claimed my bed), an end table and cat trees they sleep in/on. They seem to rotate throughout the day what they sleep in or on.

No idea why i landed on that one. It definitely pulls their under coat out but they like it for the most part. And need it. Once the clumps in their coats form I still have to pull apart manually. Which is weirdly satisfying/they enjoy sometimes. On the rear half… Less so. There are some I’m going to have to wrap or something.
@unksol Yes. Most of the cats I have had over the years love it. Two of my four cats right now hate it - especially on their rear legs and tail.
Fortunately for me the two long hairs I had (one died at nearly 20 two years ago and one is 5) don’t mat. Their fur is/was rabbit soft. The long haired one hates it (so did the other long haired one) so maybe it pulls too much. And one short haired one hates it for reasons unknown but she sure needs it.
@Kidsandliz they are all very soft. But sometimes I find a nugget in there that has to be pulled apart. They don’t really mat yet. Well and jack I know has one in his rear belly that he’s balled up licking shit. And he doesn’t like me trying to get it.
@Kidsandliz I actually got the “dematting” brush for twixie. She… Was just creating huge mats. She was very long and old and couldn’t groom herself correctly cause I think the missing teeth. I was pulling apart matts on her and some were ok. Some obviously hurt. Some I cut out. I think I thought it would help cut through some. It did not. May have helped out if had it before the problem started. IDK. I’m sure I have some decent pics of her for the in memoriam
Dylan does live here. I think I’ve got him correct and enough wiggle room to make the other three names work.
He does like some pets/scritches but the kittens are still developing personalities. So sometimes they are confident. Sometimes they retreat. The boys seem to have been more confident in general. Across this whole mess

Tigger (the orange innocent looking thug in my previous photo posted on this thread) is 6 or 7 and STILL chews on the lightening end of phone cords if I am stupid enough to forget to put it out of his reach. He finally figured out how to open the drawer I put it in. Now it is up high. Just waiting for that “safe place” to become unsafe. Expensive habit of his. I have to continually keep an eye out for 3’ replacement cords that are on a major sale.

This is Becca. I went with the Eyeshine pic just cause. They All have that very distinct facial pattern/mrking. Dark vertical line over both eyes. Then a strong symmetrical pattern. I didn’t notice it till we were looking at Dylan…

@Kyeh yes. There is good resolution in those so you can actually enhance/zoom in. I actually thought you might be mentioning his face markings which was… Why I noticed. You can zoom in on the three girls and it’s. Very distinct. There are slight angle differences. But that’s not how I tell them apart. Just noticed they all had that.
Becca has a darker stripe pattern and a black tipped tail.
Those still to be guessed… One has a white tipped tail. The other has lighter pattern. So that’s how I differentiate
But you can’t notice that in that pic. Their tails are covered and they are hard to parse who is lighter in it.
Either way appearance has nothing to do with it. Just names. I’ll be short several males on this one but. At this point less is good

@unksol I did notice the tiny white tip! I think Dylan’s the most gorgeous one, with the swirly pattern on his coat. I had an orange boy with those kinds of markings, before my cellphone; I’ll try to find a picture of him in some other place.

She is 90% of the time on the couch. So much so that I had a tiny panic attack when I realized I hadn’t seen her today and only counted to 19 when there was food. But she was just sleeping upstairs.
