Are Pop Tarts ravioli? The Cube Rule of Food
10The Cube Rule of Food, the Grand Unified Theory of Food Identification
On the internet, a fierce debate rages. Are hot dogs sandwiches? Are Pop-Tarts ravioli? Is sushi toast? Into the fracas steps @phosphatide with their brilliant Cube Rule of Food. The idea is that you can fit all food into one of seven categories based on where the starch in a dish is positioned:
For example, enchiladas, falafel wraps, and pigs in a blanket are all sushi because the starch covers four sides of the cube like so:
Likewise, pizza is toast, a quesadilla is a sandwich, a hot dog is a taco, key lime pie is a quiche, and a burrito is a calzone.
The zero-eth category is a salad, i.e. anything that doesn’t include starch (like a steak) or in which the starch is distributed throughout the dish (like fried rice, spaghetti, and soup (“a wet salad”)).

no.
ravioli is a pasta, not a group.
@Thumperchick Technically ravioli (and pop tarts) would be calzones, per this scheme…
So nigiri is not sushi, but toast?
I think this creates as many problems as it solves.
Now if you asked if pop tarts were calzones, I might be more open to agreement.
@djslack They could be turnovers too…, or soft tacos, and scarily they could be those chocolate cubes with the mystery contents inside - which is why, when I was growing up, every single one of those someone had poked the bottom in to see what was inside and then put them back in the box if they were not what they were looking for. If they were miniatures the might be cat treats.
Are ravioli Pop Tarts?
And then we had our own raging debates here:
Is cereal soup?

Are hotdogs sandwiches?

Alas, we here are but mere apprentices.
For the internet is filled with master debaters.
So an ice cream cone would be a soup, and cake would be … a salad?
I’ll have the soup and salad, please.
What’s up with the key lime pie? There is no “quiche” category in the diagram! Given the currently enumerated categories, a whole pie would have to be a salad, but a slice of pie would be, what? A toast variant? Or do we need to add an additional starch-on-two-sides category?
This clearly needs some more thought…
I don’t know about that, but Potatoes have been scientifically proven to be the most important food group.
Supporting evidence:
Calzone, or salad.
