Is there a bun with these hot dogs? That makes all the difference in if you can classify them as a sandwich. Bunless hot dog? Not a sandwich. Hot dog with a bun? Definitely a sandwich.
A sandwich something wrapped in some kind of bread that is intended to be eaten while holding, but it’s not everything that fits that definition; it is, rather, that which I identify as a sandwich.
So, no I do not consider pizza and egg rolls to be sandwiches, because I just don’t.
I could probably be convinced that an egg roll is a sandwich.
I make no attempt to convince others to use my definition of a sandwich. You are free to use your own, and I’m fine with it.
@craigthom If an egg roll might or might not be a sandwich because of its wrapper then am I to assume you mean a taco can only be a sandwich if it’s a soft taco? Where as a hard taco would fall into your possible pizza category since it doesn’t fully encompass the the filling? Or some other category of which you are unsure of?
/image hard taco
@WTFsunshine No, a taco is definitely a sandwich. Few sandwiches are fully enclosed. You can see the stuff that’s in a hamburger or a BLT from the side.
As I said, I am the final arbiter of what I consider to be a sandwich; there are no concrete rules.
@phendrick This could also be an argument against calling hot dogs sandwiches. An Oreo is a sandwich cookie because it’s filling sandwiched between two cookies. Burgers are sandwiches because they’re meat sandwiched between two buns. A hot dog has one piece of bread. At best, it’s an open-faced sandwich.
@legendornothing and that changes how you define hotdogs how? I mean, I get that it adds “not food” to the description of a hotdog, but that’s probably part of every description of a non kosher beef hotdog, at least. Frankly, I’m of the opinion that it’s a sandwich only because the definition of sandwich is too open to interpretation. The fact that there’s a debate as to whether something is or isn’t one is proof enough to me of that.
@legendornothing So… no bread?
I made vegan chili dogs once. Many flatbreads and most wraps have no egg or milk in them. The tofu hot dog was beastly, though. Still working on that one.
@Thumperchick Wait! I missed it-you’ve been down the yellow brick road! Because, because, because, because…of all the wonderful things it does! No invite? Now I feel very puckishly.
This one is easy for me, hot dog in a bun,even in a piece of bread, is a sandwich. The one that makes my head hurt is the “bread-and-butter sandwich”. To me it is toast not a sandwich.
@dashcloud This chart has ended friendships. Someone in my office posted this in common area and it has literally been a subject of heated debate for over a month.
Be careful where you share this. I would consider how much you value the friend you enter into a debate with about this. It may be the last debate you have with them.
if a hamburger is a sandwich (between two buns, giggity) then a hot dog must also be. (yes, the bun is still attached at the bottom but this sometimes becomes untrue by the time you eat it and also sometimes is true for a burger, depending on the bun.) and yet, it still seems a bit wrong.
especially since if i said i was having a hot dog sandwich, i would assume it was a hot dog sliced in half and then quartered lengthwise arranged between two pieces of bread. because i ran out of buns.
Not really. The stuff inside has to be sandwiched between the bread to hold it in place. In the case of hot dogs, pitas, and tacos, the stuff inside is cradled like person in a hammock.
@medz so where would you stand on hoagies (“subs” to less cultured parts of the country)? They also have their ingredients cradled in a bread hammock, but I’ve never heard anyone debate the veracity of their sandwhichitude.
@nickiwhite I still eat them with the bread parallel to the ground. Thus, the meats and such are still sandwiched between the bread. Nobody turns a taco sideways to eat it because the stuff would fall out.
@medz I can see that, but most of the hoagies around here are so stuffed you’d end up dumping it out the side too. In all honesty I have a pretty loose sandwich definition. Basically if it’s savory food wrapped in a wheat based product, it’s a sandwich.
@Kawa I didn’t think about dumplings. Hmm. My qualifier I left out is “intended to be eaten with your hands.” While you could eat dumplings with your hands, I don’t think that’s the preferred method. Empanadas are definitely something I would classify as a sandwich if I had to
They’re in the category of foodstuffs that use a separately baked piece of bread as a handle for a utensil-free eating experience.
You don’t have to call that category “sandwiches”, but most people do, and there isn’t really a better word for it.
(Notice that open-face sandwiches don’t fall into that category. “Open-face sandwich” is a compound phrase that, like “prairie dog”, becomes completely wrong if you try to break it apart into its components.)
In the United States, a court in Boston, Massachusetts ruled in 2006 that a sandwich includes at least two slices of bread.1 and “under this definition, this court finds that the term ‘sandwich’ is not commonly understood to include burritos, tacos, and quesadillas, which are typically made with a single tortilla and stuffed with a choice filling of meat, rice, and beans.”[16] The issue stemmed from the question of whether a restaurant that sold burritos could move into a shopping centre where another restaurant had a no-compete clause in its lease prohibiting other “sandwich” shops.
@mrapathy So for a hotdog to be a sandwich the bun needs cut completely in half rather than leave the one “seam” intact. Oh wait - a bun is not a slice (or 2) of bread. Hmm maybe it is a slice of bread if you slice it the rest of the way to be in half…
@mrapathy So…what if the item is made of a single piece of bread that is folded or cut to contain the fillings? If it’s not 2 separate slices, it’s not a sandwich. Thus, hoagies, and hot dogs are not sandwiches unless the bread pieces are completely detached from one another.
Is there a bun with these hot dogs? That makes all the difference in if you can classify them as a sandwich. Bunless hot dog? Not a sandwich. Hot dog with a bun? Definitely a sandwich.
@jds2001
Maybe.
Maybe not…

Sandwiches?!? I guess it depends on what kind of bun you have wrapped around it
@candiedisilvio1 is this a dirty joke or do I just have a dirty mind? Only answer the first part.
Yes. A taco is also a sandwich, as is a burrito.
A sandwich something wrapped in some kind of bread that is intended to be eaten while holding, but it’s not everything that fits that definition; it is, rather, that which I identify as a sandwich.

@WTFsunshine wrong hotdog man - where’s the old cartoon character/commercial of the hotdog in a bun standing on two legs? Man, I still suck at giphy.
@WTFsunshine No, a taco is definitely a sandwich. Few sandwiches are fully enclosed. You can see the stuff that’s in a hamburger or a BLT from the side.
As I said, I am the final arbiter of what I consider to be a sandwich; there are no concrete rules.
@craigthom No! Merriam-Webster’s definition of sandwich:
a : two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between
b : one slice of bread covered with food
Tacos and burritos are definitively not sandwiches. Bread itself is defined as a leavened food therefore tortillas are not bread.
@cinoclav As I have said more than once, my definition of a sandwich is my own. You are free to have your own.
It’s interesting that you exclude wraps from your definition, since they aren’t leavened, but, again, that’s your call.
@craigthom A wrap is not a sandwich either. It’s just that - a wrap!
@cinoclav I’m glad you are happy with your definition. Just don’t expect me adopt it.
A hot dog is a hot dog. Category of it’s own, it defies classification. That’s it.
Let’s ask Jian-Yang.
@TBoneZeOriginal +1 for jian-yang reference.
Does this mean a chili dog is soup and a sandwich?
@Thumperchick indeed.
@Thumperchick And a salad also, if you dress it with pickle relish and onions.
If an Oreo is a “sandwich” cookie, then a hot dog should also qualify as a sandwich.
@phendrick We should distinguish between using the word “sandwich” as a noun and using it as an adjective.
I am a vegetarian.
@legendornothing It’s okay. What hotdogs are made of can only be loosely classified as “meat”
@canuk hot dogs are made from trimmings of larger cuts of meat, so yes, it’s meat.
@legendornothing and that changes how you define hotdogs how? I mean, I get that it adds “not food” to the description of a hotdog, but that’s probably part of every description of a non kosher beef hotdog, at least. @RiotDemon Congrats on taking a joke too seriously.
@TBoneZeOriginal thank you. I really needed that congratulations.
Is cereal a soup or a salad?
@JoetatoChip we’ve been down that road…
@Thumperchick Wait! I missed it-you’ve been down the yellow brick road! Because, because, because, because…of all the wonderful things it does! No invite? Now I feel very puckishly.
@JoetatoChip It’s a salad, because all the grains are vegetable material. Unless it’s meat cereal; then it’s a weird, milky soup.
@PocketBrain But vegan soups are real - I make a really great tomato and lentil soup that’s very clearly soup.

@jpm37 but a bread and butter sandwich is butter between two slices of bread. not a piece of buttered toast.
I love lamp.
@IWUJackson OHHH! It’s a SANDwitch!
Here’s the definitive sandwich matrix, so you all can point to where a sandwich begins and ends for you:
@dashcloud This chart has ended friendships. Someone in my office posted this in common area and it has literally been a subject of heated debate for over a month.
Be careful where you share this. I would consider how much you value the friend you enter into a debate with about this. It may be the last debate you have with them.
If you swallow a sandwich whole, are you now suddenly a sandwich?
What if you swallow a hot dog whole?
What if Irk does?
at first i was like, hell no!
but then i was like…why not?

@nickiwhite So are wheat flour empanadas sandwiches to you??? Are dumplings sandwiches to you??? This is pandemonium!
@Kawa I didn’t think about dumplings. Hmm. My qualifier I left out is “intended to be eaten with your hands.” While you could eat dumplings with your hands, I don’t think that’s the preferred method. Empanadas are definitely something I would classify as a sandwich if I had to
