The Feature Conundrum
This MiGear action camera costs slightly more than others we’ve sold because it has Wi-Fi connectivity. This lets you use your phone to set up and monitor your shot.
If you’ve used an action camera without this feature, you should understand why it’s is so important. Checking the footage on your death-defying mountain bike run only to see that you mostly captured the sky can be excruciatingly frustrating.
In fact, you might wonder whether action cams without Wi-Fi monitoring should even exist. Knowing what your camera is capturing is, after all, fundamental to success in the “action” genre.
But in any industry like this where prices are racing to the bottom, manufacturers will feel pressure to cut as many features as possible. So long as customers are looking at price first and features second, this phenomenon will persist.
Another pernicious example? The airline industry.
When searching for flights, most people look for the lowest price first. Sometimes, in fact, that’s all they look for. This has given airlines an incentive to offer the lowest price no matter what, even if that means cutting basic features like seat assignments, free carry-on bags, and free water.
A lot of people like to rag on Spirit Airlines for providing such a crappy experience and charging for everything. But they’re just reacting to how people shop for flights. And they’re forcing other airlines to follow suit. United and American have started offering “Basic Economy” fares that are basically Spirit Airlines fares — cheaper and lacking any features.
Believe us — you’re going to want a cup of water on a 5-hour flight, and you’re going to want to use your phone as a monitor for your action cam. The only race to the bottom you should care about is the one you’ll be recording.
