2 cancelled flights ended up away from home 4 days longer then planned. Cost of food and hotels exceeded what i would have spent getting a flight with a better airline
@twofivefive As someone who flies from Vegas to North Dakota pretty often, +1 to Allegiant. Though they only have a few flights in or out of those smaller airports, I think they’re pretty good.
@twofivefive I liked Allegiant a lot when I was in college and it was the most affordable way to get back to Iowa for family reunions, but once they started charging for carry-ons and began to consistently run 10-15 minutes late I lost interest. Southwest is my go-to for cheap flights now.
I can’t wait until they start charging by the inch.
And whether you get to lean back or whether the person in back of you gets to wear a knee defender depends on either a public bidding process or a televised cage fight.
I don’t fly Spirit often, but I have to admit it’s exactly what they claim – cheap and cheerful, as long as you can avoid the a la carte charges. The only really annoying thing is that you have to register with them to use the online check-in, and if you don’t use it, they charge some outrageous ticket fee at the airport. I don’t like their seats, but the savings are nice.
Also, I missed a flight with them once, and they rebooked me for free on the next flight out. An amenity that several full-service airlines have declined to provide.
Rerouted during landing by thunderstorm. Forced to land at “nearby” airport, because of low fuel. Airport did not have a Spirit terminal. Waited for 4 hours for buses to be brought to drive us the 6 hours to original destination. Very little communication, no refund offered, no apology offered. Never again.
They’ve been running an ad for a Tech Writer, on the surface it’s an attractive job, the gut feeling though is do I really want to work with a flybynight maintenance shop.
I avoid them - I usually opt for Alaska (although that may change now that I’m in a metro area with the American Airlines HQ in it). Most of my flights are to the Pacific Northwest, so it works pretty well. I flew Allegiant once, and didn’t have any problems.
Well I had two choices between a recent flight to the Virgin Islands to visit a friend. I was flying with two passengers and the main flights were Spirit or Delta. After bags and all add-ons with spirit it was still $400 cheaper than delta with no bags added and all their fees.
So we flew Spirit.
Flight that direction was fine. I find their check-in annoying with all the pop-ups and add-ons they want. But even though the seats have no leg room, they also have no cushion. Due to this my knees were actually not bruised like they are on many flights. Customer service was very nice too.
Now on the flight back…
Um… Apparently they dont actually have to fly you back. Which they do if their pilots are on strike… And the two spirit representatives at the airport gave up. One left and the other turned in to a robot that said “Flight was cancelled we are waiting for instructions.” Their phone service was queued in to oblivion and kept crashing and I was left on a island with 70 other people.
Luckily my friend and I made some quick executive decisions and snuck on the last delta flight leaving that island that day.
While back in America I stalked down the two spirit employees in Atlanta and with the power of dripping kindness made them give me my money back. FYI spirit’s charter says they dont have to refund you for cancelled flights.
So ya, Kinda dont want to ever fly them again, but my knees were not bruised… Maybe if there was a short flight to a place where there is alternatives and I have back up plans I will consider them again.
I often joke to others that the tickets are so cheap because you have to pay to use the bathroom.
Our tickets were free vouchers we received. I would consider not using free vouchers even, pay for a CARRY ON, pay to choose your seat next to other members of your party…ridiculous.
If you go in expecting to be charged for everything outside of your seat, it is ok. Not very comfortable, but a cheap way to get from A to B. I only fly Spirit if the price is at least 35-40% less than Delta. I would rather spend an extra $100 for Delta typically if possible
I have never flown them but did fly Freddie Laker once from NYC to London. It was party city on board with mostly the have a backpack instead of a suitcase crowd (no food but what you brought yourself, no nothing).
I only flew with Spirit in the pre-ultra low cost days, when they were just cheaper. I was younger then, so maybe it was actually a bad experience, but I don’t recall any sense of neuroticism.
I’ve flown from Jacksonville to Atlanta with no issues and Atlanta to Las Vegas with minimal issues (flight was delayed and the crew was getting close to timing out so we had to hustle on the plane and get going ASAP needed up being ok). Last month flew from Atlanta to Boston and it was the worst. Flights in both directions were canceled and since we weren’t actually staying in Boston was a nightmare to get to NH and since our afternoon flights keep getting canceled had to crash with friends and we got home 2 days later than expected. Would I fly again, probably, but only to Florida which is their main destinations.
Yarp. One way from Vegas to SoCal. As long as you’re not thirsty and you only have the items in your pockets it’s a great deal.

as soon as i sat in my seat i knew i had to pop the anxiety pills, so small…
Greyhound bus with wings.
@curelullaby
That’s insulting to Greyhound
@curelullaby Too bad one has to open that image in a new tab to see it. Never saw a bus do that before.
“Fly the Ferengi Skies”
The phrase hasn’t caught on yet.
@atannir
@atannir
1st Rule of Acquisition: “Once you have their money, you never give it back.”
There should have been an An are you out if your bloody mind? option. I would have chosen that one…or no thanks, I’ll walk.
They flat out fucking frighten me.
@Pavlov Trust your instincts
The add-on charges made them way more expensive than other airlines. The item I was bringing to my GF at the time weighed 49-1/2 pounds.
They don’t fly out of my airport in Kansas City. Flew on something similar, Allegiant, which is a la carte, small & bumpy!

I didn’t mind Spirit when I flew on them. Saved $50 or so, round trip.
@InnocuousFarmer same here: flew with them once and we knew going in the “issues” so planned accordingly and therefore had no problems.
From the name I imagined it was an airline that gives each passenger a bottle of bourbon upon entry.
@awk “A toast to our survival / timely arrival.”
@awk But there’'s a 50 dollar “uncorking fee” for the bottle.
Timely GIF . . . Legroom offered by various airlines
@huja
I can’t wait until they start charging by the inch.
And whether you get to lean back or whether the person in back of you gets to wear a knee defender depends on either a public bidding process or a televised cage fight.
@f00l Flying sucks. Plain and simple.
@huja You’d prefer a covered wagon?
@FightingMongoos I prefer to drive or simply stay home.
@huja @f00l That gif isnt that accurate. As they have different amounts of cushion on the seats too.
Example Delta has a good chunk of space, but my knees get bruised.
Spirit doesnt but due to the lack of cushion and seat shape my knees dont get crushed.
So I have to choose between sore ass or knees
I flew Spirit once. ONCE.
@sourhead I see a lot of those comments when I ask folks if they flew with spirit.

I’ll stick with southwest, thank you.

I fly from DTW to either Atlanta or Ft Lauderdale…best prices! Love Spirit!
Never again. Boston to LAX and back.
