Real Fake

Is this thing better than a real fireplace? That depends on what you value, the process or the outcome.

The real fireplace? That’s all process. Sure, you can buy the wood. But wouldn’t it be cooler if you gathered it yourself? And split it? And carried it into your house with your cool workman’s gloves, depositing it in the fireplace like a lumberjack? Which then starts phase two of the process: getting the fire to actually light. You’re gonna need some kindling, maybe some newspaper, one of those long nosed lighter things.

It’s cool, sure. And you can front load the work. Like, you can gather and split way more firewood than you need (or, again, buy it) so that you have enough for the next few fires. But, even so, there will come a time when you’ll want a fire, but you’ll be out of wood, or you just won’t be in the mood to start one, or work to keep it going, or whatever.

That’s the tax you pay for the low crackle and occasional pop of the old school, real deal fireplace.

Oh, and then there’s the whole having a chimney thing too. We should probably mention that.

This thing? No chimney required! And as for getting it going, well, you, uhh, you know, plug it, mount it, and then, uhh, you turn it on. That’s it. That’s all you do. And it’s not just some goofy little twinkle light. You see the flames, and what’s more, you feel the heat.

In other words, we’re talking 100% outcome here.

Is it intended to be the only source of heat for a room? No. Do you hear the logs popping and see the flames ebb and flow? Also no. But again, there’s a price to pay for that experience. And you don’t always want to earn your fire.

Or, to put it differently, this is the perfect solution when you want to pull up a chair and relax next to the fire because you’re exhausted from doing something other than preparing for the moment when you can pull up a chair and relax next to the fire.
