Able Cables

Last time we sold these we heard these cables work pretty well to charge USB-C, Lightning, or micro-USB things using USB-A or USB-C plugs. Except! We heard from a few of you that there’s one specific way they don’t work: On Apple USB-C devices (like the iPhone 15 and newer iPads and Macbooks), they only work USB-C to USB-C. Not USB-A to USB-C.

We don’t want to seem defensive - that’s something we missed and if that was your exact use case it’s crappy. But if you Google around or check Reddit you’ll find a ton of people having this USB-A to USB-C to iPhone 15 challenge with what seem to be most, though not quite all, cables. It seems to be an Apple thing more than a this cord thing.

And honestly, it’s great to have this thriving community to help others find this stuff out - pro-tip, jump into the forum if you want to get some real world reviews of whatever we’re selling, and you might even find an expert or two who know more than we do.

@Dave owns these cords and the iPhone 15 (humble brag much?) and checked out all the variations he could.

Ok, here’s what I’ve got - It charged my (USB-C) Switch fine, whether from USB-C or USB-A. It charged my older (Lightning) iPad fine from either of those. And my iPhone 15 charged when I used the USB-C end instead of that older USB-A one. But it’s right to say it doesn’t charge the iPhone 15 with the USB-A end.

But look, even if you’re not dealing with the latest iPhone or MacBook or whatever, they’re still super useful. Because they allow you to be a hero.

Maybe it’s to your grandkids when they forget their charger at home, like @wolfcal described in the comments on our last sale. Or maybe it’s to your buddy who’s over at your place later than planned and needs to charge a micro-USB-powered bike light real quick before a dark ride home.

Point is, there will come a time when some device dies within your vicinity, and it’ll be nice to say, without hesitation, “Oh, I can charge that,” rather than, “Hmmm. Could I see the charging port? I might have something that’ll work.”

Not a big feature, but definitely a perk!
