Why do we put up with the cold?
The natural answer seems to be: because we have no other choice. Those of us who live in places with cold winters must simply must deal with an unfortunate chill in the air for months and months. But that’s not true! We don’t have to! Or, at least, we don’t need to let the cold get the better of us.
Obviously, there are expensive and irresponsible ways of getting around the season. Like, say, buying a house in Florida so you can live out November through March in sweet, ignorant bliss. Or else shutting all the doors and windows, cranking the thermostat to 82, and staying inside for half the year.
We don’t recommend either of these, though.
What we do recommend is re-orienting your winter psychology.
What do we mean by this? Well, basically, that we should be choosing what we wear based not on the temperature outside, but how warm we want to be. Does this sound ridiculously simple? Yes. But admit it: you don’t live by this principle. Instead, when you’re getting ready for the day, you look at your weather app, see how frigid it is, and choose whether to wear your big winter coat, your smaller winter coat, or a sweater accordingly. If you step outside and feel cold, all you do is say, “Brr! It’s cold for [INSERT TEMPERATURE HERE],” and then you go about your day feeling uncomfortable.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can simply go back inside and get that bigger coat. And if it’s cold at night, you can put another blanket on the bed. And hell, if you’re really in the mood to feel warm, you can wear some long underwear under your clothes. Like these ones. Not only are they soft; they’re made of moisture-wicking fabric in case you start to get a little too warm because someone keeps the office a little toasty.
Okay, yeah, actually, on second thought, maybe these wouldn’t be great for wearing to work. All we’re saying is, if you see long underwear, you might think, I don’t have any plans to camp in the Minnesota wilderness for all of February, so I don’t need that. But they’re not just for that. You can also use them when you want to be cozy in your drafty house on a cold winter Sunday when you’re too lazy to make a fire in the fireplace.
So get some, and enjoy some warmth, regardless of what the thermometer says you should wear.
