Picture this: you’re watching a film. Let’s just say it’s a British film. One of the characters says, “Mucha blije, guv, les Oye ava kneel furda sto’ now too?” And you rewind to hear it better. And rewind again to hear it better. And then a third time, before eventually you turn on subtitles only to learn its some across-the-pond slang you were never going to understand anyway. Eh, who cares, right?
But what happens if you leave the subtitles on? Congratulations. You’ve turned movie night into reading night. Even if you understand what the characters are saying with perfect clarity, you’ll end up scanning the subtitles instead of watching the scene.
Same thing happens when you go to a sporting event. You turn your attention to the Jumbotron to watch a replay, and ruh-roh, you just bought tickets and a twelve-dollar domestic beer to watch the rest of the game happening right in front of you on a screen. Or when you go to a restaurant and they seat you so there’s a television just over your friend’s/spouse’s/date’s head; you just missed a great story because you were watching the local news on mute for some reason.
Which is all to say: some things catch our eyes and don’t release them. And for a lot of us, the things that occupy our eyes the most are our phones.
This can be a problem any time, but it’s especially bad when we’re driving. Hence why so many people mount their phones on their dash, so that, if they need to glance at their navigation app while they’re driving or hit ‘next track,’ they don’t need to take their eyes fully off the road.
The only problem? The same one with the above-mentioned subtitles, jumbotron, and restaurant television: you might end up driving the whole way with one eye on the road and one eye on your phone. Then again, if you toss it in the passenger’s seat or your door compartment, that can be a problem too, because you have to look fully away from the road to see how many miles you have until that next left turn.
These things provide a simple compromise. You pop your phone into one and then you pop it into a cup holder. Now, your screen is out of your line of sight but right there for a quick glance down to check your ETA. And it’s charging, too!
Also, they’re easier to install than the mounted ones. Though please forget we said any of this when we sell those again.
Anyway, buy a couple phone mount things if you want them.
