2-for-Tuesday: USB Desk Lamp
- You get a pair of little lamps powered by USB like all the cool desk crap
- Dimmable lamp features 8 dimmable LEDs that dim because they’re dimmable
- Angle the flexy stand however you need, then fold it up and stow it away without so much as a by-your-leave
- Model: ENNLFLX100WTEW (this model number might actually take up more space than the actual product)
Don't buy these to save your eyesight.
Not because they’re not bright enough. They’re fine for a little USB lamp. They would be really useful to make reading, or looking at other close-up details, easier. More pleasant. But they’re not going to save your eyes from the long-term damage that comes from reading in dim light.
That’s because there is no long-term damage that comes from reading in dim light. That whole “you’ll ruin your eyesight thing” is a myth. An urban legend. A widespread misconception. File it next to “chewing gum stays inside your gut for seven years” and “drink eight glasses of water a day”.
Your eyes naturally adjust to low-light conditions. Your pupil dilates. Your rods and cones kick into overdrive. Then, when the light comes up again, it all goes back to normal. No harm done. Your eyes are built to do that.
Why, then, do your eyes sometimes ache after reading in low light? Because in darkness, we tend to move things closer to our eyes to see. And focusing on close-up objects is what strains the muscles around your eyes. But most doctors agree that this, too, is harmless in the long term.
There are lots of reasons to buy a couple of super-compact USB lights. Maybe keep one in your suitcase for reading on the plane, and one on your desk or in your junk drawer for those moments when an up-close lamp would come in handy. Just don’t expect any more health benefit than you’d get from eight glasses of water a day.
