@2many2no I second…errr…fourth that. Although sometimes I need to take one in the morning before bed to wash the funk of too many pervs off. It’s pervs or the damn running around. Can’t decide which.
Right after getting up. Unless I have a social event later in the day, in which case I shower when I get ready for that, or I am going to be getting dirty and sweaty on some household project, in which case I shower after. Recently my showers have sucked, there’s a clog in my line somewhere and I can’t afford a plumber till I get past property taxes next month. The water’s been coming out in a miserable trickle, not enough to shoot past the faucet, so I’ve been having to use the handheld to dribble it across me in sections, making showering this winter a chilly and time-consuming experience. This week I got a low pressure showerhead on Amazon, and while the volume of water is still unsatisfying, at least it compresses the trickle into a real spray I can actually stand under and get warm.
@moondrake is it only your shower giving you problems or are you having issues with your sink faucet and toilet as well? If it’s only your shower, you might be able to fix it yourself.
@moondrake did you try soaking the old shower head in deposit remover? If the pressure is how one would expect from the water saver shower head it might be just that the other shower head has deposits inside of it blocking most of the flow.
@RiotDemon@Kidsandliz My house is over 100 years old and we have very hard water, so minerals build up on the inside of the pipes and when the pipes are disturbed can let go and cause blockages. This happened with the kitchen faucet and I pulled the little grate off the end of the faucet and some small “rocks” tumbled out and that fixed it. I’d hoped it was the shower head that was obstructed, but when I unscrewed the shower cable from the wall and ran the water, it ran only about 1/3rd as hard as when I ran the sink that’s beside it. So it definitely seems to be in the shower line. I figure I need someone to snake it.
@moondrake it might be the actual shower valve. Was it replaced with a newer single handle style? They usually have a cartridge or ball that can be replaced.
@moondrake I just got back from dropping it off at the payment box in the county building parking lot. I got it there before they opened so hopefully they’ll treat it like it was postmarked on the 10th because they will have received it at the same time. Fingers crossed. I really don’t want to pay a $300 penalty.
Thanks for the reminder. It got me out of bed early besides.
@RiotDemon Are you speaking English? Since the death of my best friend who cared for this old house I have been trying to learn how to do things myself but that’s over my head. However I can say that this started maybe a month ago and nothing about the shower was changed at that time.
@moondrake Sans knob. It started as this fancy unit with a steam setting, regular shower, overhead rain setting, pull down seat with shower massage, and a panel with a clock radio that would connect via bluetooth to the phone. It was pretty awesome, but too complicated for its own good and just broke down completely, both the plumbing and the electronics. It’s still a nice looking glass shower and it seals because of the steam room thing so it’s warmer than the open top type shower stalls. My friend repiped it to just run a regular shower through it and that’s what it’s been for maybe 10 years. I did try taking off the knob and using pliers to operate the swivel to see if it was just the knob breaking down, but that did not change the result.
@moondrake it’s hard to tell what your friend replaced it with from this angle. You’d probably have to take off that silver ring. Behind that is probably a cartridge that can be pulled out and replaced. If it’s not a cartridge, it would be a ball with holes and rubber seals and springs. Usually the seals wear out, or the cartridge breaks down, or it gets build up in it. It can cause low water pressure. Or sometimes you’ll lose all the hot water.
To be able to pull the cartridge out, you’d have to turn off your house water or it’ll come shooting out at you, haha
If you manage to pull that out, you could hopefully find it at a local plumbing shop or big box hardware store.
Is there a name anywhere on the handle or anything?
@RiotDemon No, all just plain silver metal. But knowing the knob unit may be the problem is helpful. I have a friend that used to do some light handyman work that’s willing to do work pretty reasonably. I can get him to have a look at it. I can’t afford to take it apart myself without being confident of putting it back together as it’s the only one I have.
@moondrake it’s worth looking into. It’s normally the guts inside the valve that gives problems versus actual buildup inside the pipes.
Another question… The handle part, was that ever changed, or was that the original part that came with that shower? If it’s the original one, look on the shower itself to see if they put their name on the glass somewhere. It might help to find out which type of valve you have.
Someone forgot the “some other drivel you’ll tell us about in the forum” option. Or the “neither, I take baths.” Seriously, only 3 options in the poll? Someone needs more coffee, or a cookie. Or both.
I TRY to exercise in the morning and shower after that. But some days don’t work out (most days) and I end up going half the day before I give up on the exercise dream and go shower (I work from home and start around 5:30 plus get kids on bus so exercise can’t start before 7:30 and half the time by then I’m mid-task for work thinking “I’ll just finish this then exercise…”)
Ignore 2 and read as “MoLlama is the biggest procrastinator and excuse maker.”
I don’t understand showering before bed, how do you deal with your bed-head in the morning? I would have to get my hair well soaked to un-mess it before using gel and then I might as well be standing in the shower.
@plastrd I tend have night sweats, so if I don’t shower in the morning I often start the day sweaty. Plus, having spent my life showering in the morning, it’s invigorating rather than relaxing, I plan my day in the shower and leave feeling energized. Couldn’t sleep after that.
@plastrd a brush takes care of whatever bed head I have. My hair is to my ass, and I usually wash it before bed, where my hair is still wet when laying down.
Whenever there is actually hot enough water in my apt - which generally means running it for 15 or so min at times few people are up to even get it to the end of the line on the 4th floor… No bathtub so can’t heat up water and dump it into the luke warm stuff that usually comes out of the faucet no matter how long you run it… And that also means I sometimes have to take a fairly cold shower.
@MehnofLaMehncha If it wasn’t for greasy skin and hair, and sometimes sweating at night when the weather’s not cold enough, I’d probably shower every other day; but it’s no good showing up to a desk job smelling weird and looking like shit.
Right before going to bed. Every night.
Not enough hair to worry about it ‘messing’ my hair up.
I fall asleep faster. Plus, I’ve always had a dirty job. Never had a desk job. I was a commercial building mechanic, crawling around large buildings fixing everything from underground power & water lines to rooftop HVAC repairs.

Evening, before a hard night’s work.
Daywalkers always forget about those who really keep things running.
@2many2no Ditto, brother (or sister!)
@2many2no Amen!
@2many2no
They should have phrased the quiz like this:
@2many2no I second…errr…fourth that. Although sometimes I need to take one in the morning before bed to wash the funk of too many pervs off. It’s pervs or the damn running around. Can’t decide which.
At the start of my day, some time just past noon usually.
All too often when the water’s still a bit cold. Cause I’m late as usual.
@f00l I blame you for the water always being cold anyway.
@YourLazyButt
@f00l is to blame that
All do not have instant hot
Water that’s constant.
I know this isn’t the exact question, but my shower frequency varies directly with the temperature outside.
Sweaty summer = daily.
Cold winter = thrice weekly.
Twice a day. I have tried to cut it down to one a day, but I just feel so dirty if I do not get the second shower in.

@conandlibrarian
I know someone who for a while was going through a “clean phase”. They took 7 showers in one day from what I understand.
@PlacidPenguin I’ve been doing this since I was around 18. My grandfather did this as well.
@conandlibrarian
What? Sobbing in the shower?
@PlacidPenguin Whenever I think of someone in the shower, I think of this.
Right after getting up. Unless I have a social event later in the day, in which case I shower when I get ready for that, or I am going to be getting dirty and sweaty on some household project, in which case I shower after. @moondrake Oh shit! I forgot to pay my property taxes! I think the penalty deadline was yesterday.
@SSteve Hopefully you caught it time. Try telling them you thought they were closed for the weekend. The employees may have room to be lenient.

@moondrake haha, yes it’s english, if you’re fluent in plumber. Can you take a picture of the knob(s) in the shower that you use to turn it on?
@RiotDemon Here you go.
@moondrake Sans knob. @RiotDemon Thanks so much for your sage advice.
@moondrake hopefully it’ll be an easy fix. You’re welcome.
@RiotDemon
How do you know so much way practical stuff?
Lost in admiration …
@f00l my brain has a thirst for knowledge.
Evening, before bed, so I don’t sleep in my own filth and sweat. Also, the linens stay a little cleaner.
@PocketBrain
A lot cleaner, if you work hard all day
@PocketBrain I’ve always preferred sleeping in someone else’s filth and sweat.
No mention of the handy clip, so you can clip it to your . . . while you shower!

@Kidsandliz Have you thought about getting one of those single point of use takless water heater units? You install them right in the bathroom. I had no luck with mine, their electronics have problems at high altitudes, but most people are happy with them. Rheem is a good brand name, here’s an example of this kind of heater.
https://www.amazon.com/Rheem-RTE-Electric-Tankless-Heater/dp/B003UHUSJI/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1481559400&sr=8-10&keywords=point-of-use+tankless+water+heater
@moondrake Not allowed to install anything here - hud housing - otherwise that is a great idea.

This might be the worst news I’ve read in 2016, which has been pretty much a shit year all around.
Where’s that damn comet when we really need it?
@MehnofLaMehncha
Based on v limited data.
@MehnofLaMehncha If it wasn’t for greasy skin and hair, and sometimes sweating at night when the weather’s not cold enough, I’d probably shower every other day; but it’s no good showing up to a desk job smelling weird and looking like shit.
When I had an office job, I showered before I went in to work. Now it’s after golf, or before dinner.
