@Lister I’ve pretty much given up on giphy. If I don’t get what I expected in two or three rolls, welp, everyone gets to share in the manatee selected fun.
@somf69 “Kings Point”? was a local brand? I was pretty heavy in audio around then (well, very late 70’s/80’s), I don’t recall them. But I agree, does sound like Technics, Electrodyne, Lectrosonics, etc.
I got one of the cherry wood Verisonix, and I gotta say I was glad I took the chance on them. Now I don’t give a lot of wear and tear (I only don them to troubleshoot audio problems occasionally, don’t run around in them), but the build quality is good. And the sound is one I like very much
I bought a pair of the wood ones last time and was very impressed with the quality and detail of the sound for the price. I’m in for another pair …
/giphy wicked-dingy-comfort
I want to want these. They look great and I’m sure they sound awesome, but the cord is a major turn off. I’m so spoiled by the freedom of Bluetooth that I don’t think I can ever go back to a cord.
@shrewsbury Bluetooth adversely affects sound quality, the very point in this design. I have one high end BT and about seven wired headsets. BT for walking around.
@Kidsandliz Definition of sound, mostly. They are very “flat”, not over-emphasizing bass like most headphones, so many people aren’t used to that kind of brightness. And they offer low-distortion across the entire frequency range, so you’ll hear details in your favorite music you didn’t even know were there before. If you futz with your EQ settings a bit they can become your favorite cheap headphones.
@stolicat Thanks for the explanation about what they do. Any opinion if there is any practical acoustical difference between the two (not talking about color and physically what they look like)?
@Kidsandliz doesn’t look to be any big difference in their specs - they are very similar, and can’t tell much more without actually examining them physically. I expect it would be a matter of preference on style and color.
@Kidsandliz There’s not a lot of practical difference. Upper limit on both is a level you shouldn’t spend time at anyway. The normal range of human hearing is 20Hz-20kHz, and most adults don’t do that well above 12kHz, so that 45kHz? Might be discernible to your dog, but not to you. The extreme lows (<20 Hz) may have some sort of interaction with the inner ear, but what exactly is the subject of some contention.
@brainmist@stolicat@stinks Thanks everyone for that info. I need some headphones as the one I got in the last irk I got cuts out on one side that no amount of jiggling it fixes.
Tempted, but I know where my high frequencies are, and probably the crispness would be wasted. And I’d be interested in the subaural lows…but wow, the construction looks cheap. Chrome never really appeals, and those skeeny wires on the black set…nah.
I got one of the last wood ones. They do indeed sound great (they certainly look great) and the clarity is a real thing. But the electrostatic sound is quite different than the regular “dynamic” driver sound of all “normal” headphones. Be ready for that.
My only complaint about the wood one I have is the metal headband pretty easily introduces extraneous noise from vibration and any movement you make of the cable, etc. If you tap the top accidentally, you really get a reverberating drone. This model on sale now looks like it won’t have any of that extra-noises problem. So yeah, I ordered one of these too. And I’m very happy to have the opportunity to, for fifty bucks.
@michaelant@kfdavila@Rueki
Those of you that own the wood ones (available on Sidedeal still)… can anyone comment on the size of the cans? On-the-rear or over-the-ear? Thanks!
@chienfou@kfdavila@Rueki You’re wondering if they enclose your ears rather than just sit on them, right?
I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-250s and the wood Verisonix fit the same as those. Both enclose the ears; looks like these Beyers are called “over ear”. I will say, though that the Beyers passively block more noise than the Verisonix. Not a huge difference, but, there is a difference. The fit feels the same, though, comfort-wise.
Thanks for that. I was wondering if these headphones would be different from the wood model I bought last time and love — “DJ” anything tends to have an entirely different sound — and if the drivers are made of different material it’s enough to make me say “eh.”
Not “meh,” but “eh” as in “eh, these might not be as good.” Even if they’re still better than “meh.”
Besides, I liked the look of the black ones better, and those are sold out.
The only headsets I use are either connected by USB or Bluetooth. I had a stereo with a headset jack a long, long time ago, before reliable internet streaming.
Could use a dedicated pair for rhythm arcade games since I keep forgetting to bring my Sennheisers with me half the time (or a backup pair for the SO or friends when I do. Arcades are loud).
@NightGecko Which rhythm games can you wire into? I played a lot of DDR on its first wave and have been considering getting back into rhythm games. I have a Round1 in walking distance with a huge selection.
@nayten At Round1, most of them. I don’t think you can for DDR (haven’t checked), but I know for sure you can on WACCA, Sound Voltex, Theatrerhythm, and Groove coaster, which are my go-tos. That list isn’t exhaustive though. It is usually harder to find a machine without a 3.5mm jack than with one. (Also, if you do get back into rhythm gaming, make sure you go for an IC card that support the Amusement IC standard. Japanese arcades finally started standardizing around them instead of every company making their own standard)
@NightGecko Thanks, good to know! I have an e-amusement card for DDR, guessing IC is a separate standard? Recently finished up my second covid shot and looking forward to going back to play!
See my earlier post - there is a difference in material. The headphones in this deal have mylar, while the n500, which you can find on sidedeal (coupon code VMP for VMPs) that MSRPd for $499 for a little more as an option, use a paper composite and overall has more premium materials. the i502c is also available on sidedeal.
@datruandi Yeah, after reading this and the article you ref above, I compared the specs and details of these to the 500/1 I bought here last year. These seem to be a lower end version.
Well, I have them ordered, so I can compare them whenever these choose to arrive.
@brainmist@datruandi Good choice - those were the ones I bought last year and I’m happy with them. The nice hard shell case they come with is worth half the price alone.
EDIT: Also note the 500s have separate inputs for each side, an odd feature I’ve found useful when patching into mixing setups and i want to monitor two sources at once without mixing.
@datruandi After consideration and seeing the specs, I convinced myself I’d rather have another set of the N500s, so @Kevin in CS was kind enough to cancel my order. I’ll get the ones at SideDeal.
Besides, Kevin said he’d out me as a liar for saying how good they probably were, and then cancelling.
I bought the wood ones. The best and worst I can say is I never felt ripped off and while they are cherished they don’t get much use. Still, considering a purchase just to have an extra pair.
Hmm, the reviews of these seem to be polarized between “underwhelmed” and “they sound great!” Not all that helpful when deciding whether to buy them or not!
I actually got a pair of the wood-grained ones last year when that first batch was being clearanced; it was quite an ordeal to actually order them because they originally sold through to the reserve quantity and I had to wake up early in the morning to try to buy them at the next opportunity, but I digress. It turns out the set I got were faulty (I think one side was nonfunctional, IIRC,) but I was able to get a refund, so as it stands I still don’t know exactly how these sound, but I’m leaning towards trying them out (again.)
In for one of the blue. I got the square wood set last time, and loved it. Until I dropped it one too many times, and a join where the earpiece attaches to the headband broke. I tried repairing with superglue and clamping with a hemostat, but the repair never held, so I had a sad.
Should be best of both worlds! I can’t wait to hear the superior clarity when I listen in to all my neighbors’ cell phone calls. Wait - before you go all Karen and call Homeland Security in the middle of your coffee enema…that was a joke. I don’t listen to my neighbors. I’m going to use these to amplify and clarify the voices in my head.
I bought the wood ones last time, too, and they sounded fine but one of the cups broke off so now they are mostly useless. Really need access to a welder to fix them.
Please, someone… are these ‘on the ear’ head phones or ‘over the ear’. Over the ear head phones are bulky but envelop your ear. Both have their merits.
@chienfou@leesil5@mbersiam They are “over-ish”. Some of the reviews referenced above refer to them as “semi-closed”. With a little wiggling you usually get a pretty tight seal.
Apparently the “electrostatic” part is powered by perpetual motion. I call hoax based on the pair I got before. Why is this “breakthrough” technology not being used elsewhere? [Sure are piles of them on eBay.]
Anybody know if the included 1/8in adapter is any good? I keep buying them online and keep getting disappointed when they’re the kind with the crappy tin flaps inside instead of a solid barrel.
I bought one of each of the wood ones last time. Great sounding headphones, however, I made the mistake of letting my brother and sister “try” them out and haven’t seen them since (The headphones disappeared not the siblings ).
Anyway, I was looking at getting another pair but the Red/Black one is already sold out so I’m wondering if I already missed out on the superior model. Any noticeable differences between the 2 colors or are they pretty much the same sound quality? The Blue Chrome color does look nice…
OK, I really want to want this, but since I have several pairs of headphones (wired, BT, ANC, passive NC, and various permutaions/combinations of those features) and earbuds (ditto) I really can’t justify that to SHMBO.
Maybe next time. (or maybe I’ll pop for the extra $5 and get the wood ones from SideDeal. BTW, are those over the ear cans on the wood ones?)
Also… does the Red set come with extra ear cushions. Looks like it in the pics… On ear/ over ear perhaps?
@chienfou I have them on my head right now (I had to go get them out with all these questions!), and they are definitely over my ears. The cup sits around the ear perimeter.
I just got my hands (and ears) on the Verisonix headphones about an hour ago and compared them to my old Koss Porta Pro headphones. The Porta Pro wins hands down. That may be because they need some breaking-in and if my mind changes later on, I’ll let you know.
The Verisonix treble sounds tinny in comparison and adds little or nothing to the bass. The midrange is just ok and not obviously defective.
I will keep these headphones just because they are cheap enough to use as a sdcond pair when critical listening isn’t important.
“Meh” is a bit strong to express the quality of these headphones. Sound is crisp in upper mids, and highs are not shrill. Good transient response. Quite thin in low mids and in the bass. Shockingly - these “$150.00 retail” phones do NOT swivel to accommodate different size heads. If the sides of your head are parallel and flat, you might find them comfortable. However, if you have any deviation from having parallel sides to your skull (in other words, if your head is not shaped like a cube), you will find these very uncomfortable (as well as sonically anemic). The plastic housing on these phones would feel right at home on any average child’s toy. I’m really a sucker for good headphones. I’ve got a decent collection - most of them bought used, and all for less than $80.00 (at most). I also love electrostatic, audio technologies. However, I feel like a major “rube” for purchasing these toys (in sheep’s clothing). In all fairness, they did sound better than my $20.00 Sony headphones. That’s not really much to brag about. My tail is definitely tucked between my legs, for such a foolish use of my hard earned $$$.
I bought the red ones and they just arrived. They do fit completely over my ear. The sound is terrible. It’s like a tin can. What is this breaking in everyone is talking about? Do the little capacitors need to warm up to not sound like #&#-? They aren’t uncomfortable to me, maybe I have a square head. But this sound is muffled and distant. Yikes.
Bought one of each - red leather and blue - and I must say I’m super disappointed. First of all, the blue pair arrived in a box that was obviously opened / used (no plastic wrap sealing the box, unlike the red leather ones), no instructions / warranty card and no carrying pouch as advertised. The right speaker goes in and out. I will definitely be returning that pair. At least the red ones work OK and were new, I guess. Sound is… OK. I concur with many of the aural sentiments already expressed here. I will admit that I do like the detail in the midrange, and the highs aren’t shrill… Build quality leaves a LOT to be desired, and I certainly hope that whatever manufacturing weakness that caused the right side on the blue pair I received to be intermittent does not befall the red pair I’m keeping. It’s just that my initial impressions do not help me bolster any faith I might have wanted to place in these cans. In any event, I will likely stick to my Tascams (closed) or my Grados (open) for the majority of my corded listening, and relegate these to “demo” status.
Mine totallystopped working this morning.
Tried emailing their support@verisonix.com address and got a delivery status failure notification.
Any suggestions on what I may have done wrong?
I am using them with an IPad and they were working fine
THESE SOUND AWESOME! The 3.5mm plug broke, but I can solder + some Sugru and it’s better than new. They sound better than my Sennheiser studio monitors.
Now that these are showing up in IRKs, here’s a little bit of a clue why.
They’re All About That Bass, 'Bout That Bass, No Treble.
Seriously, with some significant attenuation below 400Hz and a lot of attenuation from 250Hz on down, they can be “okay”, but the upper end is tinny no matter what. Midrange response sounds muffled because the undertones dominate everything, and OMG BASS RESPONSE. Your kids will love 'em. Your classical-loving weird uncle (or your opera-loving aunt) not so much.
These are very very similiar to another headset I bought on here (almost wondering if it’s a rebarnd of the same thing). So I’ll leave the same comment here that I left for those because they feel AND SOUND very much the same (except for looks)…These don’t have noise cancelling or any fancy features, but for pure music listening, these are by far the best sounding headphones I own. Good clean bass, clear mids that don’t overwhelm, and crisp but not harsh highs. Phenomenal sound quality WAY WAY above the absurdly low price point. I’ve I see these again on Meh.com I’m going to stock up. Just cause I can’t believe this super high-fidelity audiophone quality headphone is being sold so cheap. I mean, WOW!!

MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
@shrewsbury Bluetooth adversely affects sound quality, the very point in this design. I have one high end BT and about seven wired headsets. BT for walking around.
What is the practical difference (that a human would notice, not just a “numbers” difference) between them from the auditory point of view?
@Kidsandliz Definition of sound, mostly. They are very “flat”, not over-emphasizing bass like most headphones, so many people aren’t used to that kind of brightness. And they offer low-distortion across the entire frequency range, so you’ll hear details in your favorite music you didn’t even know were there before. If you futz with your EQ settings a bit they can become your favorite cheap headphones.
@Kidsandliz Between the two options, or between these and cheaper headphones?
@brainmist Between these two options.
@Kidsandliz @stolicat the cord on the chrome is braided. Couldn’t see if the other was, but doesn’t seem to be.
That’s all I got.
@Kidsandliz @stinks chrome blue ones have a 1/4" adapter included, FWIW.
@Kidsandliz There’s not a lot of practical difference. Upper limit on both is a level you shouldn’t spend time at anyway. @stolicat you can still buy the N500 for $59 on morningsave/sidedeal (before VMP coupon). In case you change your mind.
@datruandi Thanks for the heads’ up. Opted for the n500. AT $4 more after VMP, that seems a bit more worth it.

Also… does the Red set come with extra ear cushions. Looks like it in the pics… On ear/ over ear perhaps?
@chienfou
missed the edit window…
@chienfou I have them on my head right now (I had to go get them out with all these questions!), and they are definitely over my ears. The cup sits around the ear perimeter.
@stolicat
Excellent, thanks for the field research!! Still got a few hours to try to keep talking myself out of these…
I just got my hands (and ears) on the Verisonix headphones about an hour ago and compared them to my old Koss Porta Pro headphones.
Yikes.
I’ll follow up in a day or two to inform if they have been broken in successfully.

FOOLS! TOOLS! JEWELS! AWESOME!
