Do you know who Hank Green is?
6And should you care? (I think you should)
I wonder what the average (yes not the median) age of mehbers is?
People my age may know because their kids. I just kinda started seeing SciShow one day. This was not a thing when us nerds/helpers were going to get that one heavy CRT cart for the teacher. And sorting out the VCR for them.
We did have actual mounted TVs in the highschool classrooms by 2001… But that’s a different… Type of memory

Ha! I was an AV nerd in elementary school, but it was strictly film, screens and projectors back in the Stone Age. (Primal-nerds…)
@macromeh
Ah, yes, the filmstrip projector was ubiquitous. As was the overhead projector. Really fancy schools had 16 mm projectors…
@macromeh
I was a library nerd in elementary school as there were no AV nerds then.
I became an AV nerd in junior and senior high, with 16mm projectors, overheads and we also had 3" reel-to-reel video recorders, which were in no way portable.
It mostly got me out of having to go homeroom for attendance, but also a bunch of friends.
It was circa 1977.
Yes, I know who Hank Green is. And I was another AV stone age kid; 16mm film projectors. My high school had a fantastically expensive reel-to-reel videotape machine, and exactly one tape that they could play on it; I do not recall the subject matter. There was allegedly a tape library available offsite somewhere.
I’m of the era of VCR/CRT carts (a couple of high school teachers had dvd players). I know Hank Green, but I did not find him via SciShow. I stumbled upon Vlog Brothers and liked the vibe and charity fundraising. The guy is regularly on like 5 or more youtube channels.
@fibrs86 he is but he’s not just a host. He and his brother actually built all those channels. Obviously with their staff. It’s recently a non profit board controlled organization. I guess people kept trying to buy it.

Also if you like standup and don’t like cancer
@unksol I’ve seen Hank Green on YouTube from time to time. I am sure we had VCRs in high school in the early 1980s, but I mostly remember overhead projectors and film.
@cfg83 kinda the same diff. We had those in college NROTC and I had to run up and fix one then get dressed down for fixing it lol
My highschool was to small to have those in classrooms but we dealt with them elsewhere
I do not. Should I? I loved helping set up projectors & film strips…Current age is a 58 BTW.
@tohar1 see above. I’m not promoting for them. But if you watch youtube for educational content… I just feel like they are doing good.
Some versions would be setting up CRT with 1950s footage.
Vs today there is good video content available
I was a girl. Girl nerds were not allowed to show their nerdity when I was in school. I was the only girl in my high school trigonometry class. It was one more in my physics class. And the high school physics teacher as I look back on it was probably a lesbian. But the trigonometry teacher was also female interestingly enough
@Cerridwyn not sure on the time frame? But that has definitely been a problem in times/places.
Our class was like 60 kids. Definitely could have used a nerd girl on the tech support team
@unksol never had a class that large until college. I’ve seen pictures though.
and in that physics class, only the youngest and brainiest had a basic calculator, we used slide rulers. Have no idea what happened to mine or even how to use it anymore
@Cerridwyn that makes the time frame more interesting. Sounds like one of our good teachers stories. If you want to share
@Cerridwyn
V unlike my HS. About 3-4k kids then.
There were several calculus and many physics classes. AFAIK all of them were roughly 50-50 in terms of the sex of the students.
And this was all way way back when. Yeah slide rules.
I rode T-Rex’s to and back from school every day; both ways uphill in the snow even tho the temps were hovering around 110F or so it felt.
And all that.
The schools didn’t have AC.
I was in (what once was back then) a smallish city.
Now my city of origin is wanting to push higher on the champ “largest cities” list. Ugh.
In small towns back then some kids rode horses to school. And to the Whataburger and the DQ after hours.
Some people in small towns rode horses to work if the family only had 1 motor vehicle. Workplaces accommodated.
DQ’s in small towns used to have horse hitches for the kids who came in to hang out and didn’t have cars or were too young to drive.
Free range childhoods.
“Be home before dark”. Etc.
It’s been a long way from then to now.
Not all progress is good.
@f00l how did that absolute nonsense do anything for that chain of discussion?
@unksol
oh dear. and despite several clear references.
well: if you perceive that it didn’t, then it didn’t.
mea culpa.
@f00l my sincere apologies. I think I had a parsing error. Too much liquid cooling
@unksol
parsing errors under the conditions of summer or almost summer, combined with the presence of liquid cooling, are inevitable and entirely welcome
Not intended to promote them just. Like our educational video content was very different.

Hank talking about water on Mars …
Yes. As an author.
I first heard about Hank (and his brother John) in late 2009-early 2010 from the Vlogbrothers channel on Youtube. I’ve followed them ever since. They’ve accomplished so much in the proceeding years: both have published multiple books, created the VidCon convention, created Complexly (aka Crash Course/SciShow), and helped fund a medical center in Sierra Leone to drastically reduce maternal and infant mortality in the region. Their efforts have had a measurably positive impact on the world (or, in their words, have “decreased world suck”), and I think they’re the YouTubers/content creators every other creator should strive to be.
@DustyCartridge agreed
@DustyCartridge @unksol
What?!?
You don’t think we need all those wanna be divas with pouty lips lip syncing vapid songs on TikTok??
