Bought and gifted two of these. Bought another for myself. It’s not as fast as the 2016 Toshiba Chromebook 2. Nor does it have that model’s backlit keyboard. Chip’s a bit slower. But the battery lasts longer. And it’s still going to get Android and the vaulted Google Play Store this fall. People bitch about how meh should sell this for $99. It’s still a heckuva bargain at $160.
If you’re on the fence, you should buy this because the writeup resulted in my own brief wiki-walk which ended in me going and watching the video for “Run to the Hills”, and that’s worth rewarding the fine people at Meh for.
@kensey That’s weird, I was just reading about aeroelastic flutter on Wikipedia a day or two ago. I got there after reading about the Dyatlov Pass incident, and then Kármán vortex streets…
A friend told me he spent a few hours setting up a new windows laptop for his mother, and I asked why he didn’t just get her a chromebook. For some people these are perfect and much easier to support, especially if you’re the one they call!
@Al_Coholic Like most Windows machines, the OS is way out of date. That means Windows must run update after update, rebooting many times during the “proceedure” which, depending on your internet speed, can take hours. Then you still need time to install needed apps and configure the computer itself. It can easily take hours. SIGH!
@jbartus Not a bad idea at all. I do indeed have that 64GB stick with my Windows install, but I do not often get around to updating it. But above I was just answering why it can take hours to set up a Windows Machine. I would give a longer answer, but windows update wants to restart my machine. It has been an hour since the last update after all!
I got one of these last time around, and it’s a nice little machine. But I’m extra happy that it works perfectly for what I REALLY wanted it for – warranty-voiding modifications!
If you aren’t afraid of a little bit of Linux hacking, these little Chromebooks are capable of a lot more than just ChromeOS. By running some scary-sounding commands, you can set one of these things to be able to boot from external media (SD card or USB). Then you can install any Linux desktop you like onto that. Boom, full-featured laptop for cheap, and it still functions perfectly as an ordinary Chromebook, just by rebooting to the internal drive instead of to your external media. And it’s always possible to reset the whole thing right back to factory spec.
The step-by-step guide that I followed is here: http://www.fascinatingcaptain.com/howto/dual-boot-chrome-os-and-linux/ Just make sure to get nice fast external media – a class 10 SD card or a real USB3 flash drive (in the USB3 port). Slower stuff will work, but it’ll feel pretty badly bogged down.
Like I said, some of the things you need to do are a little scary looking. When you modify the bootloader, it actually makes you type something like “I understand that this might brick my system”. But at least you can take heart that I did it to the identical hardware, and it worked perfectly. And now I have a surprisingly fast (and surprisingly cheap) little Ubuntu laptop with a fantastic screen, all running off of an SD card.
It sounds like with SEABIOS you got it to boot from SD and thus must be a USB SD reader (and not the creepy, specialized RealTek 5000 series plaguing ASUS mobiles)?
And you didn’t have any issues with the Intel 7260 AC? I’ve had nothing but struggles with signal strength/reliability on the Intel AC family both in Windows and Fedora across several Intel AC generations and several devices (one an HP Chromebox).
I am keen to grab one of these as a backup laptop for my female parent to replace her RT, but I don’t want to introduce difficulties with Wifi.
@zahgrim All I had to do was install the RW_LEGACY mod to be able to boot from USB or the internal SD card slot. Everything just works, right out of the box, and I’ve had zero issues with the wifi, under either Linux or ChromeOS. The automated fixes script that’s linked in the last step of the howto will get sound working correctly once Linux is installed, and it also makes the slightly-odd chrome-specific keyboard work like a normal one (giving you your function keys back, etc.)
I’m actually really impressed at how straightforward it was to get Linux going on one of these. People have obviously put a lot of work into making this whole thing as seamless as possible.
@Jesternaut I saw this come up last night and waffled on the fence for a while, but you convinced me. I love my old Samsung XE303C12 Chromebook, and this looks like a solid upgrade. Hopefully my Linux install goes well.
@Glucose can’t blame ya- I’ve used one, and was impressed. I just like a unit I don’t have to rework to get the versatility I need, and will run stuff right out of the box.
Can’t remember if this is the same model I bought, but I LOVE it. I’m on it now actually, I rarely even use my actual laptop anymore.
EDIT: Same one!! totally recommend it.
Just got started on Stranger Things with my Ultra HD, it’s a great little computer.
I tried for a while to put windows XP on it, managed to get Linux but I’m not smart enough to actually use it. (This might void the warranty, so attempt at your own risk or help me!)
The regular OS is good enough though for what I do.
You can do a lot of things with a Chromebook. Streaming video and music. Working with Google Docs. Some light gaming. But really, most of what you’re gonna do is browse the web.
And write code, you fools!
/giphy shakes fist
I’m glad you have these often because at some point I will get tired of the dying battery on this one and I will scream into the void “Where can I get a decent deal on a chromebook? And also see funny sock puppet videos?” and the answer will form itself before me… Meh.
Can meh graciously acknowledge me and say if these refurb’d chromebooks are manufacturer refurbs or whether they are third party refurbs. I’m on the fence on one here. Thanks!
@thismyusername I’ve actually come out really good on refurb items. Vacuum died, ended up with an upgraded model, coffee maker died, and again ended up with an upgraded model.
I actually always get upgraded. My BlendTec died on the first day, was upgraded (I just got unlucky, those are some damn nice blenders). Oh and I bought two of those portable record players, gifted one, and then mine died. Sent it back to the manufacturer and forgot about it, ended up buying a nice one in the mean time. Upgraded to the $100 model when I finally got it back. The cheap 50inch TV arrived broken, but Meh is going to fix it for me! I’ve actually had a very good time here on meh.
Oh and I almost forgot. The Chromebook honestly seemed new, you wouldn’t know it was even opened. (When I bought it the last time) totally recommend it
@jmerenda It’s a way better deal - it would have sold out, they save items so people on the east coast have a chance to buy too.
I’m a lucky MST though
@jmerenda It’s for those who have to have their beauty sleep, and would riot if meh is not “fair”. You know, life is all about being “fair” to a certain segment of “indoctrinated” people that never mentally left kindergarten.
But if you ask meh, it’s a “business decision”. They aren’t really afraid of a horde of pretty people, running after them with torches and pitchforks, screaming “it’s not fair, it’s not fair! Wahhh…it’s not fair!”. And since it’s meh’s business to run their business, kudos to them!
(But if I was them, I’d be very afraid of that horde of beauty sleepers, and just not tell anyone about it…LOL)
Awesome little device. I picked one up last time. The software on mine was WAY old and wouldn’t auto-update. Be prepared with a USB stick to do the recovery procedure. Well worth the 10 minutes effort and $160.
Bought this last time and have not been happy with it. Got one that had a bad screen wit hot spots on it. Sent that to get repaired, get it back and this thing is so damn laggy and unresponsive. Go to into settings, click a different tab and it takes like 2+ seconds to switch to that tab. Not sure if mine is just a horrible dud or you guys don’t mind this big delay
I’d like mine more if I could figure how to “map to network drive” for access to smb and/or afp file shares. I tried booting Linux but it seemed ‘fragile,’ i.e. the setting wasn’t persistent and it kept restoring to its own defaults after a reboot. So now I’m back to stock chrome OS and having poor luck finding a working smb or afp client app!
We are trying to use it as a laptop for shared use, so I’m not the only person on it. The screen is great! And it gets plenty loud for “youtube playlists,” it loads roundcube webmail fine and the browser is snappy. But it’s a little isolated without access to the file server, and converting everything over to google docs is not a practical option.
Ok, would purchase a 2nd one if you’d let me, Meh. Not for resale or hoarding. I actually do have at least one friend. Ok, he claims to be my friend, once in a while. When he needs a favor.
But, beggars <> choosers.
Meh, if you agree, 42 min after the VMP pause, since these aren’t sold out yet, to sell me another one, pls charge my card and Do It.
Probably no one cares but if you saw this as sold out with the “held for VMP” notice they are now officially back for sale to everyone. This is a result of a massive block of Runners having their orders cancelled earlier in the day which affected our quantities held back.
This is a great machine–I love it, and really enjoy using it. I bought mine a little less than a year ago. Beautiful screen, comfortable keyboard, decent trackpad with gestures, and solid guts. Plus, it’s confirmed on the list to support Android apps in the near future.
TheWirecutter.com calls the Toshiba Chromebook 2s the closest thing to their ideal Chromebook.
For those concerned, the size of the SSD has never been an problem. My old Chromebook has a 32G SSD, and I worried about the mere 16G on this one, but it’s been a total non-issue. Those hoping to install additional operating systems would probably prefer a larger drive, though.
@mediocrebot This is @sammydog01 's fault. I have a summer cold and am not thinking of all the reasons I don’t need to get this, but it’s been awhile since I indulged in tech.
@mfladd Yes, the ‘runners’ topic got my full attention. And I’m not reselling this, so nya nya nya, they can howl in frustration. And I hope they choke on their bile.

@OldCatLady according to that link its only available on: Asus Chromebook Flip, Acer Chromebook R11 / C738T. and Google Chromebook Pixel (2015) right now, but will make it to the others sometime in 2016/2017.
@thismyusername Yes, it says that, but I’m a great believer in ‘hey, let’s see if this works’. And 2016 is 2/3 of the way gone. I’m hoping the page is just outdated. Mine is due here today, then I’ll go hunting for forums.
It’s here, I’m in love. Refurb done by Toshiba. Speed is blazing fast. Screen is awesome, nice wide wrist rest deck and crisp keyboard. It took all of 2 minutes to configure, plus another 30 seconds to figure how to open it.
Is anyone else’s in bad shape? Mine came pretty dinged up, the corners are smashed, scrapes along the outside of the keyboard and around the screen and marks/scratches on the lid and bottom. It works fine, it just looks pretty bad.
@mfladd Mine was also perfect, and Toshiba sealed, and had about 3 hours of charge left on it. I did try for the free cloud storage, but Toshiba said someone had already claimed it on that machine, and it couldn’t be transferred. Enjoy!
What a complete cluster f&&k this is turning into. Unit received in a timely fashion, unit delivered missing a key from the keypad, meh support says not our problem contact toshiba, toshiba says, no, not out problem, contact meh. I will never buy another toshiba product again. If meh does not make this right I will NEVER make another purchase from meh.com what terrible customer service and support

You can switch back and forth without rebooting, no bios changes, and it all works great. I did it with this exact model, mostly to run Kodi when traveling. I have also installed Minecraft on it for my kid to play.

Has anyone been able to run Android apps on this? The site says it’s going to happen, but I can’t find whether it’s there yet. https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/dev/chromium-os/chrome-os-systems-supporting-android-apps?rd=1
@OldCatLady I don’t think that the update to support Android apps has been released yet.
@billchase2 I know, but I want it NOW!
It’s here, I’m in love. Refurb done by Toshiba. Speed is blazing fast. Screen is awesome, nice wide wrist rest deck and crisp keyboard. It took all of 2 minutes to configure, plus another 30 seconds to figure how to open it.
@OldCatLady and the best thing - - to the runners. still awaiting mine.
Is anyone else’s in bad shape? Mine came pretty dinged up, the corners are smashed, scrapes along the outside of the keyboard and around the screen and marks/scratches on the lid and bottom. It works fine, it just looks pretty bad.
@Happydish contact customer support, doesn’t sound right
Mine just came and it looks brand spanking new. Opened up the cover and it was already powered on and ready to go with s/u.
@pjmartin meh support will make all things right in the end. They are good.
@pjmartin Also you can say FUCK here. That is why @carl669 loves this place.
Thanks meh. You stepped up and made things right. Can’t say the same about Toshiba, but I am now satisfied with my second meh.com experience
Confidence restored.
@pjmartin @mfladd saying “fuck” is really the only reason i’m here. oh, that and the quality weed. but don’t tell anyone else. or i’ll fuck you up.
@carl669
get away from our weed. you always let @mehcronomicon get fucking near it, then all fucking gone.
@carl669
Expansys has them now for $150 plus shipping. http://www.expansys-usa.com/toshiba-refurbished-chromebook-2-cb35-b3340-celeron-dual-core-n2840-2-16ghz-16gb-ssd-4gb-13-3-1920x1-292524/
I like to think that trying to do better than meh’s price is what did them in.
Dear Meh, my friend needs a Toshiba Chromebook. Can you please bring them back. I love mine!
@mfladd we have a thread for that!
https://meh.com/forum/topics/what-should-meh-sell-again

@mfladd @f00l @narfcake
