As many fuks as they’re doing this time, it likely won’t be the sort of variety we’ve seen in the past. I mean, how could you possibly fill thousands of boxes and still have them be unique?
@medz I’ve never received anything which wasn’t new in a Fuk. Now BOCs OTOH, empty soda cans, leaking batteries, broken dishes, an old dusty broken lamp, a bag of electronics cables which looked to have come from someone’s bin, even a dirty ashtray once.
@ruouttaurmind Well you have been lucky then. I have had broken things, a few dirty things, a few worn things, frequently dollar store type things and also very occasionally some nicer things. Never got a jackpot item but then the odds of that happening is only marginally better than winning the lottery so can’t complain about that. With the exception of one fuko, generally worth the $5.
@Kidsandliz Of the 6 Fuks I’ve received, 4 were basically dollar store kitsch. 1 had a couple decent items, including a Black & Decker juicer, and the best Fuk was the first birthday Fuk when I was one of the lucky duckies who got the… I wanna say it was a Marantz AV receiver? I sold it for $400 on CL since I didn’t have a HDMI capable TV at the time and already had a nice Sony AV system (which was stolen in the great home burglary caper a year ago).
@PlacidPenguin@ruouttaurmind Yeah come to think about it my only good stuff was only from a fuku. Well and that steamer (which I haven’t yet tested to see if it works) and the apple phone cords from the fuko before this one.
I’ve had a lot of fuku/fukos and while some were real crap, I’ve been pretty happy over the years. Some things I have gotten:
–Sony Iphone Clock Radio (My first fuku (#2)) which I use every day
–Gaming headphones (still use)
–Fan (Still use)
–Dessert maker
–Gopro (Big Score!!!) (Always use on vacation)
–Knives (Gave away)
–Gaming keyboard
–Horrible camera (My first fuko)
Along with a bunch of fun little knick/knacks and meh paraphernalia.
I didn’t get one this time
However, I’ve gotten some pretty cool stuff in my Fukos including Leak Frogs, really nice headphones, a ghastly 5’ phallic drum (that my wife made me donate), some usable bluetooth shit & lots of fun misc crap.
I didn’t have a lot of time to try for a Fuko, due to an ill dog, but they are something I always look forward to!
@moonhat Fukubukuro means “lucky bag” in Japanese. Merchants over yonder will sell these mystery lucky bags to clear out stock. The impression is that the contents are a good value with the gimmick that you don’t know what you’re buying. meh.com originally sold their version of “bags of crap” or “random crap” as fukubukuros. The problem was two-fold: 1) the term was not trade-markable 2) the contents didn’t always live-up to the definition of a “lucky bag” because some people get junk that may leave them feeling unlucky
Thus, meh.com renamed their crap bags as “fukobukuros” defined as unlucky bags. This way, they don’t have to worry about people feeling unlucky after purchasing and any searches done for “fukobukuro” will lead to meh.com as they “own” the term.
Aside from Meh swag, contents vary by bag, although in Fuko 18, there were some things which almost everybody got.
And sometimes, outside of the meh swag, the contents resemble the dumpster behind the dollar tree where just a few people get something nice.

@ruouttaurmind I wonder how many tons of Goodwill clothing they bought this time
@medz Hopefully zero but you never know. I think I still have an ugly purple shirt that smells funny from that fuko.
@medz @sammydog01
PURPLE!!!

@ruouttaurmind
/giphy lucky!
@medz @ruouttaurmind
/giphy dumpster dive
@Thumperchick So that’s where they get the contents of the BOCs!

@Kidsandliz @ruouttaurmind
Out of 6 Fukus/Fukos, I’ve only received one good item, and that was from a Fuku.
(Though I wouldn’t decline getting a box of junk for $10.)
@Kidsandliz @PlacidPenguin @ruouttaurmind
Swag is the fun thing.
@PlacidPenguin @ruouttaurmind Yeah come to think about it my only good stuff was only from a fuku. Well and that steamer (which I haven’t yet tested to see if it works) and the apple phone cords from the fuko before this one.
I’m hoping for a better haul than the last fuku I got, which was #4. The star of that show was a pair of pretty bad noise cancelling headphones.

Could someone explain the difference between a fuko and a fuku?

@medz great explanation! Thank you. My vague understanding of it is much clearer now.
