Scavenger Hunt::: get crafty!!!!
3I have a sick kiddo at home which got me thinking of this... Show off a little about your craftiness. I know I've seen some of you guys do some awesome things (TTM doll!) So show off what you like to do... If you can't think of something to be crafty with... print this off: Color it and scan/snap a photo of it. I don't care how you color it, Paint, Water colors, Crayons (all purple even) However you want... Please don't use blood... that would be CREEPY... Not to mention smell. Anyway... Show off your craftiness. THIS IS A FUN ONE! There are no bad points. no points for stars on this so go crazy! Also any entry will gain you/your team 50 points. (Remember weekends are better point wise)

Why hello there, Tiny Tub Mummy, who's that? Aww, it's Tinier Tub Mummy!
@jaremelz OMG!
@jaremelz -Tiny Tub Mummy and Tinier Tub Mummy? I LOVE them.
@jaremelz ZOMG. So many cute TTMs.
@jaremelz It's cute... but does it blend? ;) (Don't blend it.)
@sohmageek @jaremelz See, I was thinking something more along the lines of "She's cute, but does she know how to get to my house?"
@sohmageek Never!
@christinewas I can thankfully report that all TTM have left my home. I'm no longer responsible for her! Sadly, she didn't know how to get to you. :(
@jaremelz She looks terrified!! Don't do it!
@stardate820926 Luckily she was found and rescued just in time.
@jaremelz I love these so much.
@lisaviolet Thanks. I have found I love making them. A challenge, but not so much that I don't enjoy it.
@jaremelz- She's going to need years of therapy.
@mikibell 's sunflower
@jaremelz I love it!
@jaremelz - Is that felting? It's really beautiful, I like how you added shading for dimension.
@KDemo It is. I posted this in another thread. It's pretty slow and boring, but it is the making of this piece.
@jaremelz nanner nanner nanner..no one else has one but I DO! 😁
@jaremelz - How did I miss that? The process is so labor intensive. And you have to watch what you're doing, you can't just watch TV and felt or you might end up bleeding on your project (or worse). Thanks for that, I'm so impressed.
@mikibell - You're special.
@jaremelz That is fascinating, and a thing I would like to try.
@KDemo Thanks. And yes, you've really got to watch what you're doing. I tend to work with headphones on because if I have the tv on and hear something interesting and look up, ouch. And the finger guards help slow the needles down so that they don't go really deep, but they sure don't stop them!
@brhfl Get thee to a craft store. The needles and guards aren't costly. If you really want to try, message me at jaremehlz at the Gmail with your address when you're ready. The hardest thing to get is loose wool. And seeing how I've entire sheep's fleece in my garage, I will happily send you some.
@jaremelz That is awesome! I've barely started needle felting, but my sister and I cut the fingers off of some heavy leather work gloves to use as guards. Works ok, but they probably don't stay in place as well as the ones you have!
@shyxgrl These work really well. I like them because they are soft enough to be really comfortable. What have you made? You should share pictures in this thread, I'd love to see them!
@jaremelz There is a photo here: https://imgur.com/FXMuqGC
I just need to figure out how to clean up the little wispy pieces...
Also, I don't know what this scavenger hunt thing is so please don't put me on a team!
@sohmageek please exempt @shyxgrl from teams, she was just being generous and showing me something! Don't worry, he's a much nicer goat than our last one. I love it! It is adorable. As far as the fuzzy bits go, they tend to come with the territory. The problem is, if you try to trim them, and ever need to touch the piece up by re-needling it, cut ends will not felt.
@jaremelz Thanks for the heads up on cut ends!! I picked up reverse barb needle a while ago and haven't had the time to sit down and try it out. I'm feeling inspired again with your post!
@shyxgrl Very cool! I've seen them used to create adorable fuzzy creatures. Maybe you've inspired me to try it as well!
Deadline? Because I have fabric and felt and googly eyes.
@sammydog01 How about the 22nd?
@sohmageek Works for me. Thanks.
@sammydog01 Sneak peek!
@lisaviolet Starting tomorrow because I made this guy for Woot.
@sammydog01 Hmmm.....very, uh, interesting. I like it!
Thinking hat
@jaremelz - So cerebral!
@jaremelz Do you have a store? I want to buy one of those!
@hallmike I don't, sorry! And this is one piece I probably won't make again. The cord is 25 feet and takes far too much work.
@jaremelz I was just wondering if this was worth the effort to knit and you answered the question for me. It looks fantastic!
@glindagw There are a few patterns out there, but they all used far less i-cord because it's just so time consuming. I came up with this one, it's just a simple stocking cap. Every so often, I want to make another one and my husband just gives me that look.
Sometimes, I actually knit with all that wool. Alpaca cabled scarf..
@jaremelz - That's beautiful. Ages ago I had an alpaca poncho. Every time I wore it, I had terribly itchy eyes, throat, etc. Turns out I'm allergic to alpaca. I think it was from Peru. They probably didn't clean or treat the wool, or whatever is usually done. Anyway, your scarf is awesome.
@KDemo Oh no, that is terrible. Sounds like you're one of the few with a true allergy.
I am not on a team.. but zoom in closely.. you will see a Meh. coffee wrap.. :)
My husband says meh. is going to send me a cease and desist .. my first attempt at digitizing an embroidery design..
@mikibell It's great!
For @mfladd Does this count as crafty?
@jaremelz It should, it was a lot of work and drawing and acting and puppeteering.
@lisaviolet @jaremelz Hell yeah it does!
Now, that's a great way to score points. The only ones who can make them are the team members and only if they participate.
I'm not sure if this counts as crafty but I've been getting into photography lately. I took this one at the Fort Worth Zoo earlier this summer.
@stardate820926 - Just makes you want to cuddle him. Great photo.
@stardate820926 wait a minute. did you and @lichme see the same gorilla?
@stardate820926 THAT'S THE GORILLA WITH THE FOOT-DICK.
From my brief time painting. I made a series of watercolor animal paintings for my youngest son's room when he was a baby.
Awwww.
@jaremelz Is there no end to your creativity across all mediums?
@dashcloud Oh there is, trust me. I'm frustrated by my inability to do many things. But thank you!
I made this from scratch (Pepsi can for scale):
I actually have a small photo album somewhere on Imgur that I set up to share with some other people. Let me find it...
Ninja Edit!: You can see more pictures and a little of the buidling process HERE.
Side note, I had 2 stars, now I only have 1. Someone hates me that much!? :(
@Bogie - So it's a cooler? Good job!
@Bogie - A lot of times my stars don't stick when I reload. Frustrating. Don't know if that happened here.
@KDemo Yup! The cooler can pop out and used separately as well.
@Bogie That's a PEPSI THROWBACK! I gave up soda recently... Dr. Is telling me to lose weight... give up salt, and cut back on sugar... Damn... getting old sucks.
@sohmageek When we first got married, every meal I cooked I'd ask "how is it?" Answer was ALWAYS "needs salt". I don't cook with salt. If I never had salt again, I wouldn't miss it in the least.
Then we went to nutrisystem (when they had walk in clinics - 1988). Salt was one of the things you didn't get. And finally...no more "needs salt". When you wanted the salt shaker the other day, I didn't even know if we had one.
@Bogie mine! great job on that.
@lisaviolet nice! Well. I don't put salt on much. I like it on popcorn, fries, salt and vinegar is one of my favorite wings and chip flavors. On tomatoes. And on a few other things. But other than that. I don't over salt things. So when the dr said I have high blood pressure. Pills or give up salt. I didn't realize how bad it was without salt. :(
@sohmageek Once you get all of the salt out of your system, then you have a meal out that you can't control the salt content and you wake up the next morning with a very bad case of cotton mouth, you'll think..."aha! Salt! Ick! Where's the water?"
@lisaviolet OH GRITS... I can't have my grits without a heaping mound of salt butter and possibly bacon grease... >< I'm going to die of a heart attack before I hit 35... lol
@sohmageek I recently heard of using amino acids as a salt substitute. I looked it up - some people do, but I also found a page saying there's msg and a small amount of sodium in there. Decided not to try it.
I make window hangings with crystal beads. Photographs are tricky, though.
.
A smaller version:
And this is for a friend with birds so they can't peck at the beads:
@KDemo That's beautiful! They all are, but I really like the solution you came up with.
@jaremelz - Thank you. You have to imagine the rainbow colors on the walls.
@KDemo I think that's what I love the most, I can just picture it from that first photo!
i make portable hydration devices:
on a more serious note, i got a little into photography about 3 years ago (right before my son was born). i managed to capture this image while he was in NICU (he was born 7 weeks early). it's probably the best image i've taken to date.
@carl669 Wow, that is truly beautiful.
@carl669 - Priceless.
@KDemo @jaremelz thanks!
@carl669 - Deserved.
@carl669 Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
@lisaviolet thank you! i absolutely love this picture. i actually start tearing up a little if i look at it long enough. yeah, i'm really a sap with a tough(ish) guy exterior.
@carl669 ha.. my mom calls me a steel coated marshmallow -- sounds like you fit that description too.
@carl669 beautiful child.
I'm crafting a bloody mess. Seriously. It's bloody. I jammed a brand new cutter blade into my finger.
Note the Tinker Bell heads....
@lisaviolet Nooooo! You beheaded Tink?
@sammydog01 Not on purpose, @sammydog01, not on purpose.
I finally got it figured out. This is still on the sticky mat and there's residual paper stuff from my previous attempts (this paper does not please me, it splits when you try to pull it up, but it's "draft" type of paper, so it's okay). The different parts of the decal will be different colors. The top is my prototype tink. The second shows the vinyl colors I'll be using. (The wings will be a lot nicer than that, I've got some vinyl that looks etched, so kind of translucent.) Then I have to figure out how to get the individual pieces placed on a carrier so that Brian (husband) can just put it on the car.
It's about six inches tall.
@lisaviolet So cool!
@lisaviolet Use the vinyl transfer paper. That stuff is the bomb. http://www.amazon.com/Silhouette-12-Inch-Premium-Transfer-Paper/dp/B0069VEBO0
@Pamtha Oh, no, you didn't. You didn't bring up consumables. Say you didn't....back in our grasshopper days (when he was in construction and made a buttload of money and we spent it as quickly as it came in) I got into making shirts using the 8.5 x 11 transfer papers. I had a small heat press to do the work. Then I got serious. And spent $$$ on consumables and a larger press (GeoKnight 20x16). Then I decided I wanted a cap press, so I got a cheaper used one over on eBay, for visors mostly. One of my best friends got me started on the Silhoutte. I had the SD, then they came out with the Cameo so I could use 12 x 12 paper. Yay! More stuff to buy, I'm in heaven! (And it actually worked out, because now we have no money, but I have stuff!)
I store my stuff in the garage and uncover as needed.
My storage cabinet (Brian got this for me earlier this year and I love it, this is the most organized place in this house).
And here is my vinyl storage. The upright rolls on the left and right are heat vinyl (for material) and the small upright rolls in the center are for outdoor use, signs or decals for cars!
I get most of my transfer paper at http://www.tshirtsupplies.com/. I mostly use the Neenah Soft Stretch for light garments. It has a great hand and lasts long. I'll post some of the shirts I've made below. My heat vinyl is from http://www.imprintables.com/. I don't remember where I got the decal vinyl, but I bought one of each color available. Grasshopper days.
TL;DR Spent too much money on stuff.
@lisaviolet Can I come over to play? My mom says it is OK, I promise!
@Pamtha Yeah! You can come play! I have lots and lots of toys.
I used to make Ukrainian eggs. (the flash washed out some of the colors)
@hallmike beautiful!
@hallmike - So intricate. Takes much patience, no?
@hallmike I love them!
@hallmike That is intense!
I also do this kind of stuff
@Bogie Leatherworking? That's really impressive.
@lisaviolet It's a side hobby that came along with our primary hobby.
@Bogie I'd buy that. Got Etsy?
@Pamtha I don't. I've made a few items I've sold over the years, but got tired of trying to make people happy. I found that people will complain when things aren't 100% perfect. Forgetting that these things are hand made one by one, not mass produced in some sweat shop.
@Bogie Ain't that the truth? Most of the crafters I know laugh when people ask "do you sell these?"
If they do, it's not to make a profit. For what they'd pay, a crafter wouldn't even break even on material cost.
@Bogie that's awesome! I love custom leather. No not Irk's fascination with butter kind of leather. Im having a hard time trying to find a good leather cuff band for my Apple Watch that isn't all full of buttons or look like it came from 1950's versions of 2015. I don't know why I want a leather cuff band. But I want one :).
@sohmageek @o8sav89oet @Pamtha Here's the final product. Tried some new dye resistor which didn't work as well as hoped. It took ~1 hour to make with no guides, just cut it out to see if I could make it work. The hand stitching took the longest. I have since purchased a leather sewing machine to save my fingers.
I make craft beer:
And appliances that hold said craft beer:
I also craft logistical nightmares with beer.
@marklog Damn. I am beer jelli now.
Is there a limit to how many crafty items we can post? I have a serious problem....lol
@SavvySapphire nope!
am i the only one who saw this thread and have this song go through their head?
I don't really have a thing that I do, but our office is full of my mom's scrapbooking stuff. (She was very crafty.) Using her supplies, I made this card for Team Breakfast Octopi (gishwhes) and was pretty happy with it. Since I spent way too much time cutting the tree, it only makes sense that I pull this out for another scavenger hunt.
@joelmw wrote the haiku and we "sent" the card to a family member. (I meant to send, but I'm actually hand-deliving it in a couple weeks.)
@christinewas I really like that and you did a wonderful job on the tree. A lot of detail work.
Very nice sentiment, @joelmw.
Minimum effort participation points!
Here are a couple of shirts I've made. When we had our Disney meets, I made shirts for those. These are a couple of my favorites.
The first one I had a head shot of everyone who was going, I cartoonized that and added a body (done with a graphic program and a mouse) and added cartoon hands I found online. Then I found a picture taken from New Orleans Square looking at Tom Sawyer Island, cartoonized that, then added the people.
This one I really liked. I listed all of the rides that were not down for refurbishment and we all got sharpies so we could mark off which rides we'd been on.
And there's this shirt made with pink glitter vinyl that I cut out on my Silhouette.
@lisaviolet some of your links didn't work :(
@lisaviolet I still love that shirt! The fact that you actually made it is even better :)
@hollboll I hadn't uploaded the pictures. I find that usually helps.
@lisaviolet These are great!
@sohmageek Does a watercolored CS email count?
Does photography count? Right now I'm shooting digital just so I can stay sane, but I've done some rather crafty things with film, I would say...
Three frames on b/w film shot through RGB primary separation filters - thus the colorful bands of light where the trees overhead shifted.
Seven frames on b/w film shot through primary (RGB) and secondary (CMY) separation filters as well as unfiltered for luma info. Everything static cancelling out to b/w, movement/light shifts become highlighted by color.
Color film developed in Rodinal, typically used as a b/w developer, but with weak color dev properties…
…getting covered in chemicals must make it a craft, right? ;)
@brhfl You are a seriously gifted artist. Hell yes, this counts. I'm blown away.
@jaremelz Aw, thank you!
Art or craft?
http://stamm.com.au/art-versus-craft-the-final-word/
@lisaviolet - It's pretty clear what the author thinks of artists! It was too funny. Thanks.
A preview of some craftiness going on in the office. End results will be revealed in the near future.
@JonT @studerc's Goat prize? ;)
@JonT I'm so intrigued by this. Looks like fun!
@jaremelz IT does... I wasn't going to bring up prizes... but I bolts skulls and either paint or blood... Depending on who is doing the craftiness I guess it could go either way... :P
@JonT - WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO GLEN???
@sohmageek I'd guess that this time, something's gone terribly RIGHT!
Since you say photography counts, I don't know where to get started. www.juststephen.com is my photo blog.
Here's a few random ones...
@juststephen that sunset is amazing!!
@stardate820926 Sunrise. :)
@stardate820926 here's a different version for you.
These aren't edited hardly at all - it was naturally this brilliant.
@juststephen dang! I knew I would get it wrong. I typed sunset first, then sunrise, then went back to sunset lol
either way, it's gorgeous
This also reminds me, I need to ship out my crafty prize for the unofficial meh contest #2 winner. I've been sick, I haven't forgotten about you, @saladbreath. I promise I'll get it out as soon as I can. :)
I couldn't let @jaremelz have all the fun so I broke out my needle felting felt kit and decided to give it a try. Not too bad for my first one!
@stardate820926 - You just made that? It's so cute!
@stardate820926 I love it! What a great face.
OK, my favorite work saying is to put lipstick on a pig, when a report has bad news in it. So I went to the ceramics painting place, and painted a pig!
@Pamtha - Nice! You deserve extra points for the Built NY case, too ;-)
@KDemo I wish we could get another Built NY pile... @HOLLBOLL! Hook
meUS up! :)Alright, I have a bunch of stuff, but I will start with the Christmas ornaments.
And, I'll also share my all time favorite (at least at this point). I entered a category at my local fair called "Flea Market Finds". You had to take two things and make them one decorative or functional item. I used some great vintage cards, and a broken iPod touch and made this great little display piece. It actually won first place too, lol!~ I love this so much, it isn't even funny!
@SavvySapphire - So creative!
@SavvySapphire that's really cool!
I almost forgot! I also used to make spoon rings. Back in the day, they were quite useful for those moments when some asshole didn't want to take rejection on the dance floor.
I now mostly make stitch markers and earrings.
@jaremelz what material are the turtles?
@mikibell ceramic. I couldn't find my favorite ones last night, little skulls.
@jaremelz Do you have a shop online where people can buy your stuff?
@thumperchick You used to do some crafting thing right? How come you didn't post anything in this thread?
@dashcloud because I've been busy as shit doing some of those things. Also, playing with my new hole saws on my drill press. And other stuff I'll post about later.
Right now I need to get my ass in gear and go to the hardware store.
@Thumperchick ?
@sohmageek
@Thumperchick :( I've had a few bad experiences at ACE.. :(
Wow....just sayin'.
@lisaviolet wow. I'm pretty sure she doesn't count as a crafter. She's a holy shit talented artist.
Does this count as crafty? I had all the components to built a decent computer, but no case.. So I found a box the right size, and made it into a case :). So far everything is running well and staying really cool, but I haven't tried any gaming yet..
http://imgur.com/a/4r9ii
@kadagan note that all the components are mounted either with screws (fan, psu), double sided tape (motherboard), or packing tape (front grille, back panel). The ssd is just laying there for the moment, since I don't want to tape it down.. Lol
@kadagan - Reminds me of some speakers that @snapster made and posted here.
Points: I counted everyone once, but due to some repeats, I'm upping the points to 1K per person... I did like seeing the crafts! you guys are great!
