@ACraigL What software do you use for your images? You're obviously more talented than me, but I'm wondering if you use better software as well? (I use GIMP, because it's free!)

@kadagan Photoshop Elements. It's pretty cheap and does most of what Photoshop offers, except for high end printing and a few other features. Gimp is good, but if you wanted to get your feet wet, I'd recommend PSE.

@cinoclav The story contests will favor those who can spin a yarn. The participation contests favor those who have the time to spend on the forums. In other words - nothing is fair. If you want to try anyway - who knows, maybe you'll stumble onto a hilarious idea that wins despite your lack of talent in this area.

Also Gimp is a free and good software for those who don't have photoshop

@cinoclav I think cleverness and humor will edge out technique any day, especially for these judges.

@ACraigL Eh... really depends on how the winner is voted for. It's typically been by who gets the most stars and in the past that's almost always gone to someone who is obviously much more talented in the area of that contest. While I or others may post something clever, witty or sarcastic, there's a limited number of people who will either understand or appreciate it and thus vote for those posts over someone's awesome artwork.

@Foxborn - Gimp is a great substitute for Photoshop. Problem being, for those of us who don't use these kind of programs they have a very steep learning curve in order to produce a quality image. I so rarely use graphic programs that when I do I spend more time going back to the help menu than I do actually editing the image.

@cinoclav But couldn't that same logic be used to disparage almost any human activity? Everything, from sports to music to cooking to showering to driving, has a certain degree of technique involved, and those who learn and practice it are going to achieve results more readily. I think JonT (and others) have done a good job of keeping the contests pretty diverse--we've had art, writing, videos, captioning, educated guessing, character designing, video pitching, and more. I think you addressed your own concern regarding Photoshop though-you rarely use it, so you haven't fully picked up the skill set yet. Work with it more and over time it will feel more natural.

@Starblind I'd work with it more if I had the need. But I don't, so why torment myself? I really don't have any major issues with having these contests. If nothing else, I get to enjoy and appreciate the work of those who are really good with image editing. It was just a random thought spinning around up there.

@brhfl You certainly do get plenty of accuracy points--the taste of candy corn is undoubtedly reminiscent of something that might come from a horse.

@jqubed @jaremelz The little pumpkin thingies that are made of the same stuff candy corn is? I loved those too, I think largely because I liked eating the little stem off first. I also ate my candy corn layer-at-a-time. The maple thingies were tasty, but not fun.

@jqubed They are sold as 'autumn mix'. I like to have a few mixed in, but prefer just the corn.

@jaremelz - I think candy corn tastes like honey. I like them, but only the originals, not the yucky "chocolate" and other flavors.

@jqubed Just avoid the chocolate ones that they sometimes sell those mixes with. They are disgusting, @KDemo couldn't be more right.

@jaremelz @jqubed Add me to the list of candy corn eaters. I also tend to eat them by layer and absolutely bite the little stems first on the pumpkins. Not to mention all those little Peep bunnies who lose their ears first (after opening the package and letting them sit for a day.)

@sammydog01 Funny, I was playing with the same idea, but with claws and shell emerging from the cake (crab cake, specifically). I wasn't feelin' it though so I gave up on it. Your sculpting prowess is magical.

@sammydog01 Like, Irk as an eggplant? Looks top-heavy. Does it stand for long on it's own?

@ACraigL He's supposed to look like an eggplant- the photo would probably be better in daylight. He is actually very stable- he's just under 1-1/2 inches tall including his hair, so he's light.
