This is an example of a product that does not need to look like this. My humidifier does not need to look like a $10,000 electrostatic stereo speaker.
EDIT: There’s also absolutely no reason this thing should ever cost $300. It’s almost certainly plastic, and is barely worth what Meh managed to price it for.
@tweezak that is a nice setup, too bad it’s not mine. or yours, apparently. i still have some tall electrostatics from the 1980s.
Yeah, positioning of electrostatic speakers is critical. Positioning of humidifiers that look like electrostatic speakers also is critical. Probably don’t want to put it directly on that wood floor.
@tweezak They are Acoustat bought around 1988. Still working though I haven’t been using them recently. Biggest problem was my cat wanted to use as a scratching post and sometimes climb to the top. Not a good thing.
@pmarin I have Martin Logan Electromotion ESLs and also have cats. I have kept the dust covers on them as long as I’ve had them. The covers are pretty well trashed but the speakers are still pristine underneath. Martin Logan says I can order more covers for about $35.
We just rescued a kitten (found nursing from her mother with 4 others in a cage in a dumpster - people suck). She is full of energy and runs and climbs to the top of the speakers now and then. Luckily she only hangs from the dust cover. I’ve only seen her do it once and I gave her a good swat. Hopefully she learned.
Costco sells a version of this humidifier, made by the same company. It was just on sale there for $69.
The big deal with this kind of humidifier is the hidden cost of the necessity to use distilled water. With recent inflation, distilled water is selling for $1.25 gal. at my local Wal-Mart (cheapest in the city) I go through 2 gallons a day using ultrasonic humidifiers.
@accelerator Yep - that’s why I use a $25 humidifier each winter & then throw them away if/when they scale up too bad from tap water. I’m not using $200 worth of water each winter (or messing with hauling all that water around).
@Commonwealth109 I used tap water but started seeing white powdery residue everywhere. I noticed it first on my TV screen and then realized it was everywhere! Started using distilled water and it went away. I’m switching to an evaporative humidifier with a fan that blows through a moistened wick.
@accelerator maybe your water is a little worse than mine, luckily I only get buildup on the appliance itself - not on anything else in the room. Sometimes I don’t even see it, but you can tell it’s happening because it dosen’t work (or at least not work well) anymore.
@accelerator
I have the costco ones, uses tap water. The roadshow guy said these use tap water. 2 years almost and still working good. I agree these are on the pricey side.
@Commonwealth109@G1 I took it a step further and painted all the walls and ceilings white. Problem solved! And, White boogers are less obtrusive when you blow your nose.

@IndifferentDude The SpongeBob one was the best one!
@PooltoyWolf Got it back!
@IndifferentDude Nicely done hahaha
Time to buzz the tower Goose.
Just what I need to humidify this Texas Gulf Coast air.
I need a dehumidifier, can I run this in reverse?
@awk You mean an air conditioner?
@awk Reverse the polarity!

Why is it so hard to tell if this is ultrasonic, steam, or evaporative?
@Fourhundred57 Ultrasonic. Tank basin design gives it away.
@Fourhundred57 for real! I was just trying to figure that out.
@Fourhundred57 @PooltoyWolf Yep, and the linked user manual references the ceramic ultrasonic vibration disk
@Fourhundred57 @platojello @PooltoyWolf
So it is a sex toy also?
@Fourhundred57 @platojello @yakkoTDI
Thanks for that mental image.
@Fourhundred57 @platojello @PooltoyWolf @yakkoTDI
Only if you are an elephant
@Fourhundred57 @Kidsandliz @platojello @PooltoyWolf @yakkoTDI
I bet there are some things that even elephants would rather forget.
@Fourhundred57 @platojello @PooltoyWolf @yakkoTDI anything is as long as you’re brave enough.
@Fourhundred57 @platojello @PooltoyWolf @yakkoTDI
Not a very good sex toy. It will only get you humid, not wet.
It’s just that bad that I’ll offer you $55 for it
Do you have cigars that large in Texas?
Oh, that’s not a humidor. Never mind.
These look a lot like my speakers. (Not my setup, BTW) That right channel should not be in the corner.

@pmarin If you have some older planar speakers they may be Magnapan. If in decent shape they could be worth some money.

They seem small. Room sized units? I need a whole house unit

@accelerator @Rakhee112 I need that one. The cheapie one I bought is putting white dust everywhere. I have a feeling that isn’t very good for me.
@Commonwealth109 for sure my water is probably harder,TDS, than most municipal water systems. I have a private well and the water is Very hard.
@accelerator @Commonwealth109
So if i use this for about a year, then I don’t have to paint the ceiling?
I hate painting ceilings. I can scrub walls. Painting ceilings notsomuch.
@Commonwealth109 @G1 I took it a step further and painted all the walls and ceilings white. Problem solved! And, White boogers are less obtrusive when you blow your nose.
With all the Doctor Who references and no one’s mentioned Lady Cassandra?
@LaVikinga Or the absurdly-named “action figure” that was produced.
@LaVikinga @werehatrack It was a little bit of a stretch.
I already have a whole-house humidifier: it’s called Florida…
Those Amazon reviews… Ouch!
If a certain large computer manufacturer bought this brand, would they add useless digital features and call it an iObjecto?
I mean… it IS in the top 2,500 on Amazon (#2,397 in Humidifiers).
#hardpass
@mehvid1
It’s down to #2406 and presumably falling, when I checked the link just now. I don’t know if there are more than 2406 humidifiers listed…
Am I the only one who read this as “towel humidifier” and was wondering if you just throw a towel over it?
