As a young penguin, whenever I would hear (or read in comics) how some kids would only really get jelly beans during certain times of the year, I would be somewhat surprised.
Payday. Obviously a Baby Ruth is better. There are also a few regional variants of the Payday that have more of a soft vanilla nougat center, those are even better.
@mschuette@sammydog01 Yes they do, and they are amazing. A Baby Ruth is like a Snickers done right. Paydays are amazing because you can eat like 40 of them at a time and still feel you love yourself.
@sammydog01 I am pretty sure there is other candy out there that looks like it involves chocolate and is actually something else with long chemical names.
I choose Payday over chocolate most days, especially what passes for chocolate in most candy bars. Non-gooey caramel, especially that which contains no HFCS, gets top billing with me.
Skittles, SweeTarts, maybe Jolly Ranchers. Used to love the candy orange slices that my grandma kept for us (she lived in Chicago, and supported Brach’s candy).
I’m eating Necco Wafers right now, while I still can.
I mean, I wouldn’t say they’re the best, and they do offer a “chocolate” flavor, but I really like them.
I also really like licorice. Actual licorice. “Black licorice” is redundant.
@Limewater I have a roll of Necco wafers in the car. It is nice to have something that won’t dissolve in the heat and I love Necco wafers. Except for the chocolate and licorice flavors.
@medz@stardate820926@amehzinggrace Did ya’ll know they actually make a bag called “FavorReds”? It’s amazing. Spicy not in that bag, and I’m not a huge fan and most kids aren’t either.
Ordinarily I’d say any peanut candy, I like those Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews, the Lance bars, peanut brittle depending on how it’s made… But right now in August?
Jelly bellies and salt water taffy if I can pick out the good ones. Gummies in red, yellow or translucent white. Tootsie rolls are good. (Yes, I am picky )
I am more likely to buy chips for a snack than any kind of candy including chocolate.
@sligett Reminds me of arriving at Customs in the wee hours of the morning on my first trip to Australia. The Customs agent asked if I had any food in my luggage. I replied, “I have some Doritos”. The Customs agent responded “Burritos?” I said “No, Doritos”. She said “What?” I was too drunk with jet lag to change gears and make any sense so I tried the old fashioned American Way of speaking very slowly. “Doe Ree Toes.” At her continued look of confusion, I finally pulled them out of my carry on and handed them to her. “Oh”, she said, “Why didn’t you just say crisps?”. “Language barrier” I answered.
@rm9116 My kid likes a Thai fish tasting, french fry looking, “chip”. In my opinion it smelled so bad I refused to taste it telling her that I didn’t want to deprive her of even one piece of something we could only buy infrequently that she loved so much.
Sour Punchies. They took sour punch straws, cut and rolled them into tiny spheres, and coated them with a sweet fruity coating. Not the easiest to find but has been my favorite.
I’ve written of this before, but I will never stop mourning Garbage Candy, the candy that was shaped like garbage and came in a little plastic garbage can, and was basically pressed pellets of sugar… and was the greatest candy in the world.
@nigglez if I go to cracker barrel, I get some of those. Never heard of them before I saw them behind the counter. I like the fizziness. I also find it amusing that I tell people I’m giving them to that it fizzes, and they still get confused when they eat it. I actually had someone feet angry about it. I just looked at her and asked what she thought fizzy meant.
They’re 59¢ for four at CB. I suppose I should find them online cheaper if you used to be able to get them for a quarter… But then I’d probably eat way too many.
Speaking of candies we used to love, Toffifay is making a big comeback, I see it all over the place now. Technically it doesn’t meet the standard for the question as it has a dab of chocolate, but it’s mostly caramel and hazelnut cream.
-I second the Goetzes (omg so good)
-Haribo twin snakes
-Haribo starmix is good too - it has twin snakes, the cherries, gummy bears, gummy colas, and gummy rings all together in one glorious experience
@capguncowboy There’s no such thing as too tart, but I definitely agree on the too sweet. I used to try those sour gummies but once the sour coating was gone I’d spit them out. Mouthful of jelly, eww.
Better topic - non candy chocolate. Not talking about fudge or cakes or the like, but chocolate made by a chocolatier using high quality ingredients. Not full of milk and refined sugar
Jelly babies. When my daughter visits England I make her bring them back. Her boyfriend also brings me some when he visits. Yes I can order online and find them in big mall candy shops. But they are overpriced that way.
/image jelly babies
@mfladd And cow tails which I think are the same thing in tubular form
@mfladd @sammydog01 my mom loves those. She also loves necco wafers and circus peanuts.
ಠ_ಠ
@RiotDemon 1/3 star for liking these. Deleted 2/3 star for Necco and clown shits.
@mfladd Best. Candy. EVER.
duh. candy corn.

Other Uses for Candy Corn
Price: $19.00
Condition: Probably New
Jelly Beans.
Growing up is realizing that you can eat jelly beans any time during the year.
@ChadP And buying a can of whipped cream and shooting it directly into your mouth whenever you want.
@ChadP @Kidsandliz My husband bought a tub of cookies and cream cool whip and I just want to sit and eat the entire thing.
@ChadP
As a young penguin, whenever I would hear (or read in comics) how some kids would only really get jelly beans during certain times of the year, I would be somewhat surprised.
@Kidsandliz I think shooting whipped cream directly into your mouth just means you are doing drugs wrong.
@ChadP I buy the big tubs of Jelly Bellies at Costco- most flavor for the bucks.
@sammydog01
Started thinking about dancing jelly beans.
Found this:
@ChadP @Kidsandliz they also make adult whipped cream now:
Haribo Sour Gummy ANYTHING
Starburst is the only non-chocolate choice.
/giphy starburst candy
Mouth’s watering just seeing that picture.
@dave I guess I should go find some of that since I don’t recognize it at all.
@dave just no. I like many things from other countries but candy is rarely one of them
@dave Candied Ginger- the only thing “ginger” I really l
@tightwad What?! You don’t think candy should be covered in chili powder like virtually all candy from Mexico?
Carmel candy. Werther’s Original or their chewy version.
Peppermint isn’t half bad at times.
@Kidsandliz oh ya, any Werther’s are up there.
@Kidsandliz Bullseyes
@Kidsandliz Callard and Bowser’s Toffee
Payday. Obviously a Baby Ruth is better. There are also a few regional variants of the Payday that have more of a soft vanilla nougat center, those are even better.
@mschuette I’m pretty sure Baby Ruth bars don’t have actual chocolate in them either.
@mschuette @sammydog01 Yes they do, and they are amazing. A Baby Ruth is like a Snickers done right. Paydays are amazing because you can eat like 40 of them at a time and still feel you love yourself.
@mschuette
@mschuette @tightwad I’m pretty sure it’s chocolate-like but not actual chocolate.
@mschuette @sammydog01 @tightwad
Ingredients
Sugar, Roasted Peanuts, Corn Syrup, Partially Hydrogenated Palm Kernel, Coconut, and Soybean Oils, Milk, Cocoa, High Fructose Syrup, Dextrose, Skim Milk, Whey, Glycerin, Salt, Emulsifiers (Monoglycerides and Soy Lecithin), Peanut Oil, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Carrageenan, Tbhq and Citric Acid (to Preserve Freshness), Caramel Color.
@mschuette @ruouttaurmind @tightwad I don’t think that counts as chocolate.
https://abcnews.go.com/Business/IndustryInfo/story?id=5689239&page=1
@sammydog01 I am pretty sure there is other candy out there that looks like it involves chocolate and is actually something else with long chemical names.
@heartny Yes! Yellow and white, normal marshmallow not the weird newer ones.
I choose Payday over chocolate most days, especially what passes for chocolate in most candy bars. Non-gooey caramel, especially that which contains no HFCS, gets top billing with me.
Mike & Ike
Also, swedish fish
Probably my number 2. But I think I’ve realized that it’s the Jelly Bean texture.
Butterscotches
Edit: OH, OH, don’t forget coffee candies!
Skittles, SweeTarts, maybe Jolly Ranchers. Used to love the candy orange slices that my grandma kept for us (she lived in Chicago, and supported Brach’s candy).
@compunaut I put a bag of orange slices in a dish when my kids and grandkids come and they’re gone in minutes.
I’m eating Necco Wafers right now, while I still can.
I mean, I wouldn’t say they’re the best, and they do offer a “chocolate” flavor, but I really like them.
I also really like licorice. Actual licorice. “Black licorice” is redundant.
@Limewater I bought two cases of wafers and about 7 pounds of Canada mints while they’re still available
And licorice is amazing as long as it’s the real stuff and not the artificially flavored nonsense
@Limewater - Didn’t someone buy the Necco company? Oh noes!!!
Valentine’s day will never be as good without their conversation hearts.
@Limewater I have a roll of Necco wafers in the car. It is nice to have something that won’t dissolve in the heat and I love Necco wafers. Except for the chocolate and licorice flavors.
@nolrak I’ve still never actually seen Canada mints in real life.
If it’s not chocolate is it even candy?
Starbursts are a’ight I guess. (pink and red only)
@medz mess no wonder they killed you off you like the two worst flavors of starbursts. Orange is the best.
@CaptAmehrican @medz You’re both wrong. Yellow’s where its at
@CaptAmehrican You are woefully misinformed and I respectfully disagree.
@CaptAmehrican @medz @stardate820926 Theres a spicy starburst that I am absolutely hooked on…all 4 flavors…yup
otherwise pink, yellow, orange…no red
@medz @stardate820926 @amehzinggrace Did ya’ll know they actually make a bag called “FavorReds”? It’s amazing. Spicy not in that bag, and I’m not a huge fan and most kids aren’t either.
@medz @stardate820926 @tightwad That’s the perk of being an adult…I has the money…most kids don’t…#winning
Ordinarily I’d say any peanut candy, I like those Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews, the Lance bars, peanut brittle depending on how it’s made… But right now in August?
@aetris Payday Bars!
@PhysAssist - I really meant PayDay, not the Lance bars so much:
White chocolate
@ACraigL
I see what you did there.
I’ve seen some good choices on here, but don’t think I saw Werther’s Originals or Atomic Fireballs.
Also chewy sweettarts sours are pretty good, as is almost anything sour.
I’m gonna have to find those spicy Starbursts.
Found the spicy Starbursts. Not bad. They also had spicy Skittles. I haven’t opened that bag yet.
The spicy Skittles are even better than the Starbursts FYI.
@djslack really? I’m not a huge fan of skittles…but I’d go looking for that
Well now I need sugar…dammit…
back to my salt and vinegar chips (I was going to need sugar anyway)
/image air heads candy
/image war heads candy
Jelly bellies and salt water taffy if I can pick out the good ones. Gummies in red, yellow or translucent white. Tootsie rolls are good. (Yes, I am picky )
I am more likely to buy chips for a snack than any kind of candy including chocolate.
Maple Sugar Candy.
My wife says too many choices but peppermint is always a good choice.
I can’t choose just one.
Currently in my house is Jolly Ranchers. I prefer apple and blue raspberry.
Sour candies. Gummies. Sweet tarts. Fruit flavored stuff.
Fuck licorice.
Lots of good choices here. I asked my daughter to bring me some halvah when she visited from Jerusalem this summer. Yum.
It can require some explanation to get it thru customs as it looks like something more dangerous.
What’s that?
It’s halvah.
What’s halvah?
It’s a candy from sesame seeds.
(Disbelieving look)
No, really. Here, try some.
(Really disbelieving look)
Ok, I’ll have some first.
@sligett Reminds me of arriving at Customs in the wee hours of the morning on my first trip to Australia. The Customs agent asked if I had any food in my luggage. I replied, “I have some Doritos”. The Customs agent responded “Burritos?” I said “No, Doritos”. @sligett Oh yeah, been in that position, have had the “it’s ground-up sesame seeds and an enormous amount of sugar, it’s really good” conversation.
Swedish Fish.
@rm9116 My kid likes a Thai fish tasting, french fry looking, “chip”. In my opinion it smelled so bad I refused to taste it telling her that I didn’t want to deprive her of even one piece of something we could only buy infrequently that she loved so much.
Orange Mentos NOWmints?
Twizzlers are my weakness
licorice, jelly bellies, circus peanuts, laffy taffy, gummi colas, those gummi raspberry/blackberries, chick-o-sticks, and candy corn.
@moonhat Bottle Caps!
@moonhat Yay chick o sticks
Cherry Jolly Ranchers
Italian Torrone (OMG)
Napoleon Bonbons
Sour Punchies. They took sour punch straws, cut and rolled them into tiny spheres, and coated them with a sweet fruity coating. Not the easiest to find but has been my favorite.
@ThomasF They discontinued these!! I have been searching for them!
Skittles…aka Power Pellets
I’ve written of this before, but I will never stop mourning Garbage Candy, the candy that was shaped like garbage and came in a little plastic garbage can, and was basically pressed pellets of sugar… and was the greatest candy in the world.
Zotz! I used to be able to find them all over 4 for a quarter but most of the stores near me have stopped carrying them.
@nigglez Now there’s a literal blast from the past.
@nigglez they are in the little store/café here in the courthouse I work in.
@nigglez I mean, they are for sale there. Not just rolling around on the floor.
@moonhat yeah I still get them from time to time at an international grocery store in STL when I get the chance to get there.
Plus if I’m lucky they have parma violets, wine gums, and flying saucers too.
@nigglez if I go to cracker barrel, I get some of those. Never heard of them before I saw them behind the counter. I like the fizziness. I also find it amusing that I tell people I’m giving them to that it fizzes, and they still get confused when they eat it. I actually had someone feet angry about it. They’re 59¢ for four at CB. I suppose I should find them online cheaper if you used to be able to get them for a quarter… But then I’d probably eat way too many.
@nigglez WINE GUMS ARE SO GOOD.
Speaking of candies we used to love, Toffifay is making a big comeback, I see it all over the place now. Technically it doesn’t meet the standard for the question as it has a dab of chocolate, but it’s mostly caramel and hazelnut cream.
Gummy peaches
Those hot skittles
Gummy bears
Probably whatever is closest, easiest to put in my mouth, and not coconutty.
But if I’m buying, most likely
/giphy black licorice
@thejackalope Have you had the stuff they eat in Europe? That face is appropriate.
-I second the Goetzes (omg so good)
-Haribo twin snakes
-Haribo starmix is good too - it has twin snakes, the cherries, gummy bears, gummy colas, and gummy rings all together in one glorious experience
@LemonTheCat
@heartny @LemonTheCat oh yeah, the Starmix! I discovered that recently and love it
@heartny as much as I love octopuses (seriously, I really do have an actual obsession), haribo is superior to trolli.
Hard candies are great but they’re too sweet (or tart) to sustain anything more than a couple at a time. How are you supposed to binge like that!?
I could eat Werther’s Originals for hours though, so I guess those get my vote
@capguncowboy There’s no such thing as too tart, but I definitely agree on the too sweet. I used to try those sour gummies but once the sour coating was gone I’d spit them out. Mouthful of jelly, eww.
Caramel Cremes
Better topic - non candy chocolate. Not talking about fudge or cakes or the like, but chocolate made by a chocolatier using high quality ingredients. Not full of milk and refined sugar
/image cacao nibs
/image dark chocolate truffles
I do get Twizzlers Nibs (cherry) from time to time. But licorice in general might be my favorite non-chocolate candy.
Wait, Skittles!
/giphy Skittles
Jelly babies. When my daughter visits England I make her bring them back. Her boyfriend also brings me some when he visits. Yes I can order online and find them in big mall candy shops. But they are overpriced that way.
/image jelly babies
Reese’s Pieces
Can’t believe I forgot Turkish Delight. I’m not a fan of the ones full of seeds and nuts but the fruit flavor ones can be really nice.
Individually-wrapped Swedish fish are the (most wasteful, but) best.
I was hooked on hi-chew for awhile…love the grape and mango flavor…now that I think about it…I have a stash of grape at home…
