Look Smart Trivia: Before They Were Rock Stars
5Some stars were born with swag. Others learned it through the trial-and-error of being a huge dork. Lucky for us, there are pictures. Each of these photos includes at least one person who later became a musical icon. Don’t get too hung up on the “rock” in “rock star” - I’m using the term in its broadest musical sense. Be the first to name all five and you’ll grab a $5 Meh coupon - sadly not suitable for rolling up and snorting cocaine through. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
Best in Show goes to six-time champion @cinoclav, who paraded before the judges and fetched the $5 medal in our Dog Breeds quiz:

- Borzoi

I think #2 is Benatar?
@f00l I think she thought so too.
@DennisG2014
Great selection of artists here. Undeniably five of the greatest musicians of the past 60 years.
Also, I’m just glad I don’t have to see another Borzoi today. shudders
@steelopus
Good list of answers.
Benatar and Madonna are similar around the eyes, perhaps?
Is the eyes that made me think “Benatar”.
But I’m trying to remember from so many decades ago, and I never much attention to either.
@steelopus
Hmmm.
All of them?
On second thought, I wouldn’t use “ageless” to describe ol’ Jim Osterberg. He definitely looks every bit his age.
Is there a non-English word for “How has this awesome, crazy mothereffer survived this long?”
DIPLOMAT! RAT-A-TAT! FAT CAT! AWESOME!
@f00l Without hesitation yes. Some were self made, others had help along the way, but all left meteoric crater-sized impacts on the music industry.
@f00l @steelopus I’m sure at that age Madonna must’ve been a fan of/emulating Pat Benatar.
@steelopus
Agree with “impacts on the music industry”.
To my mind, Madonna is better thought of as a “performance artist incorporating pop music and video in her creativity” than as a pure musician.
But I don’t quibble about her talent, drive, incredible influence, or success.
I remember well when she was the model for how so many young women dressed and acted.
Her influence was prob all well-gifted to the long term good of society. Who knows?
But what you said was:
That I might quibble about.
@steelopus I was staring at the guy with the drum in #4 thinking, “I know that face, but I can’t place it. Who is that?!”
Then I saw your answer and was like, “OMG yes!”
@f00l Unlike Milli Vanilli… Madonna’s songs didn’t sing themselves.
@steelopus
If there had not existed the videos and the visual act, Madonna’s songs world have gone exactly no-where.
Her “act” was the provocative multimedia package. Not the music in itself.
(IMHO)
@steelopus No credit to Björn Ulvaeus in #3? He’s an important part of Abba too.
Today’s was definitely a Google image searcher’s dream. All 5 show up immediately though I have to say, #3 was the only one I wouldn’t immediately know.
@cinoclav Indeed. #3 is the only one I needed help with.
@f00l @steelopus my sister and I are having the Benatar/Madonna argument
@steelopus @tinamarie1974
I suppose a Google image search would bring a quick answer.
But I refuse to do that.
Very 80’s, isn’t it?
/giphy 80’s
@f00l @steelopus i didn’t know there was such a thing! #gettingold.
@f00l @tinamarie1974 Knowing that Madonna is naturally a brunette helps in this situation.
@f00l @steelopus I knew that, but the eyes were bothering me. I googled madonna b4 she was famous before I conceded.
@steelopus @tinamarie1974
I knew Madonna was originally a brunette - remembered that from the dark past.
But I still thought the eyes looked like Benatar.
Oh well.
Loser again.
@Barney Yeah, that photo kind of gave away the last one.

@cinoclav I will be the first to admit that I am not a good googler.
@tinamarie1974 Unfortunately…
@cinoclav eh thats ok…it was fun trying to guess.
While we’re all here, if you haven’t seen Gimme Danger, the documentary about Iggy/The Stooges, you’re really missing out.
