It is hard to imagine all these boats in one place (I think it was the Amsterdam tall ship festival last year. I have a captain’s license for the class B ones (the biggest tall ships are class A) and I would not want to be the one at the wheel in this crush of ships.
@hems79 I have been in several NYC 4th of July tall ship parades, some in Norfolk, Baltimore, Boston, and a few other cities and it is a blast… but not so much so if you are on bow watch or at the wheel - too many idiots on the water don’t know the rules of the road. We used to joke that we’d stab ourselves a little sailboat with our bowsprit (that spar that sticks out off the front (bow) of the boat) and take it home with us as a pet. In one NYC parade of sale I was a guest of the Uruguay Navy on their class A. That was a lot of fun.

I had no idea you had this special passion and area of expertise. You remind me of someone.
One of my ancestors ran away from home and lied about his age to join the US Navy at age 12 or 13. He fought in the Spanish American War in the Philippines, sailed several rigged ships on cross ocean voyages, and had been around the world twice by the time he turned 22 or so.
At age 80 he visited the west coast, and his son managed to set up a celebratory shipboard dinner with some local Navy brass.
So at this dinner in his honor, after receiving every courtesy and a tour of whatever he wanted to see, he was asked what he thought of the modern Navy. He answered, with confidence, how, in his day, the Navy had wooden ships and iron men.
I believe the answer was well-received. I think the local brass thought he’d earned the right.
With no more than a 6th grade education, he later became his railroad company’s roundhouse foreman and their lead train derailment crises expert/engineer for a large portion of this country. As a very young child I once asked him how he got the trains back on the tracks. He said, “We stared at the mess and took pictures and measurements until we figured out something or other.”
Whenever I start to think I am competent at something, I think of him.

@f00l Yeah I had a misspent youth working on tall ships, working for outdoor adventure outdoor programs like Outward Bound. Lots of fun, didn’t make much money doing this but at the time I didn’t care, worked in a number of countries which was a great experience… Glad it brought back nice memories for you. Personally I’d be terrified being on one of these things in the middle of the Atlantic if a big storm came up. It was bad enough when we were nearly shipwrecked off the coast of Marblehead/Salem, MA in a storm, was out of diesel (so couldn’t motor through it which became a big deal when the mainsail and foresail tore when a wave broke over the booms), and nearly ran into one of those many big rocky mini-islands sticking out of the water around there. While we could have swum ashore, it would have been seriously embarrassing… LOL

Re my Navy ancestor. He never thought of it as risky. With a lack of alternatives, everything was risky. So why not go places and have fun?
I dearly wish I had understood at the time what a treasure of stories he must have acquired. I was too young. He rarely spoke about it - he was rather too fascinated being part of with our worlds rather than having us share his. No everyone who might know them is gone. What a loss.

I bought one of these from Moring Save a couple weeks ago. It’s a little irritating to see them here now, for $7 less.
However, they are a bargain at $17 and a steal for $10. These are real quality and are easy to maintain. The only draw back is they need almost 2 cups of sugar water as the container is fairly deep. I think I’ll try to fix that problem by filling it with marbles to raise the water to a heights the birds can reach.

@f00l The ones I teach however I also have no control over what they are (common syllabus) and some area a real PITA to grade. When I design assignments I also make sure that they are easy to grade and grade consistently from student to student which also means having a fairly specific list of what they are expected to do and how they are expected to do it. What I am dealing with right now is the wild west and so it is very time consuming.

What state did that car come from? I’ve seen northern rust mobiles, never owned one. In Texas - and most of southern US I think - rust is hardly a prob? Because no ice on roads. Some cars that live very near the coast can get a bit of rust if they aren’t washed much.
After ice storms here (TX) the cities use sand. And now they have fancy machines that go bridge to bridge and scalp the ice right off.

@Thumperchick When I used to work for Outward Bound over there across that hurricane producing pond we’d kayak and camp on that lake. We held a “monster watch” night watch for the hell of it. No monsters. Ever. Despite having half believing teenagers having an two hours of watch each (in pairs) all night. Entertaining hearing them talk in the dark - somehow they think that makes what they are saying suddenly unable to be heard by those of us in tents. Must be the sound proofing of thin nylon walls.

It is hard to imagine all these boats in one place (I think it was the Amsterdam tall ship festival last year. I have a captain’s license for the class B ones (the biggest tall ships are class A) and I would not want to be the one at the wheel in this crush of ships.

@hems79 I have been in several NYC 4th of July tall ship parades, some in Norfolk, Baltimore, Boston, and a few other cities and it is a blast… but not so much so if you are on bow watch or at the wheel - too many idiots on the water don’t know the rules of the road. We used to joke that we’d stab ourselves a little sailboat with our bowsprit (that spar that sticks out off the front (bow) of the boat) and take it home with us as a pet. In one NYC parade of sale I was a guest of the Uruguay Navy on their class A. That was a lot of fun.

I had no idea you had this special passion and area of expertise. You remind me of someone.
One of my ancestors ran away from home and lied about his age to join the US Navy at age 12 or 13. He fought in the Spanish American War in the Philippines, sailed several rigged ships on cross ocean voyages, and had been around the world twice by the time he turned 22 or so.
At age 80 he visited the west coast, and his son managed to set up a celebratory shipboard dinner with some local Navy brass.
So at this dinner in his honor, after receiving every courtesy and a tour of whatever he wanted to see, he was asked what he thought of the modern Navy. He answered, with confidence, how, in his day, the Navy had wooden ships and iron men.
I believe the answer was well-received. I think the local brass thought he’d earned the right.
With no more than a 6th grade education, he later became his railroad company’s roundhouse foreman and their lead train derailment crises expert/engineer for a large portion of this country. As a very young child I once asked him how he got the trains back on the tracks. He said, “We stared at the mess and took pictures and measurements until we figured out something or other.”
Whenever I start to think I am competent at something, I think of him.

@f00l Yeah I had a misspent youth working on tall ships, working for outdoor adventure outdoor programs like Outward Bound. Lots of fun, didn’t make much money doing this but at the time I didn’t care, worked in a number of countries which was a great experience… Glad it brought back nice memories for you. Personally I’d be terrified being on one of these things in the middle of the Atlantic if a big storm came up. It was bad enough when we were nearly shipwrecked off the coast of Marblehead/Salem, MA in a storm, was out of diesel (so couldn’t motor through it which became a big deal when the mainsail and foresail tore when a wave broke over the booms), and nearly ran into one of those many big rocky mini-islands sticking out of the water around there. While we could have swum ashore, it would have been seriously embarrassing… LOL

Re my Navy ancestor. He never thought of it as risky. With a lack of alternatives, everything was risky. So why not go places and have fun?
I dearly wish I had understood at the time what a treasure of stories he must have acquired. I was too young. He rarely spoke about it - he was rather too fascinated being part of with our worlds rather than having us share his. No everyone who might know them is gone. What a loss.

I bought one of these from Moring Save a couple weeks ago. It’s a little irritating to see them here now, for $7 less.
However, they are a bargain at $17 and a steal for $10. These are real quality and are easy to maintain. The only draw back is they need almost 2 cups of sugar water as the container is fairly deep. I think I’ll try to fix that problem by filling it with marbles to raise the water to a heights the birds can reach.

@f00l The ones I teach however I also have no control over what they are (common syllabus) and some area a real PITA to grade. When I design assignments I also make sure that they are easy to grade and grade consistently from student to student which also means having a fairly specific list of what they are expected to do and how they are expected to do it. What I am dealing with right now is the wild west and so it is very time consuming.

What state did that car come from? I’ve seen northern rust mobiles, never owned one. In Texas - and most of southern US I think - rust is hardly a prob? Because no ice on roads. Some cars that live very near the coast can get a bit of rust if they aren’t washed much.
After ice storms here (TX) the cities use sand. And now they have fancy machines that go bridge to bridge and scalp the ice right off.
I doubt there are ever ice storms even in northern Florida. Is that right?

So how the heck do I get these giphy’s to actually work on this site. I tried all three embedded commands on the site I found this and you can see above I had to finally just settle on the actual link to the page that has the giphy.

@Thumperchick When I used to work for Outward Bound over there across that hurricane producing pond we’d kayak and camp on that lake. We held a “monster watch” night watch for the hell of it. No monsters. Ever. Despite having half believing teenagers having an two hours of watch each (in pairs) all night. Entertaining hearing them talk in the dark - somehow they think that makes what they are saying suddenly unable to be heard by those of us in tents. Must be the sound proofing of thin nylon walls.
