F***ing Pacific Power. I swear they are the least reliable provider in the western hemisphere. I better unplug all my electronics before the inrush surge takes them all out.
In southern california, where I have Edison, it’s always I wonder what happened it’ll be back on soon. When I lived on the central coast and had PG&E, it was oh f*** it’ll be out for days again. It really was never out for days but it was a long time relatively speaking to sit in the dark
I’ve lost power at my house once in 15 years. The power never goes out there and it never really storms bad there either. The one time I did it was winter and cold. Stayed the first night, thinking it would be back on. Went to a movie the next day to keep warm that second night I found the last hotel around and power was back on the next day.
@accelerator@OnionSoup This is why you install a 100 gallon pressurized accumulator. Its residual pressure won’t last forever, but at least you’ve got some post-power-failure flow to work with for a while.
Scenario one (shitty weather) “wow I wonder how long it’s going to be out”
Scenario two (nice weather) “dammit… Someone must have run into another freaking power pole.” Followed immediately by “Crap… hope I don’t get called in to the ER!”
back in…2003? in the dark days of Dial-up and no smartphones ( camera phones were the latest flash innovation, and i didn’t even have a cell phone) the power went out at my Studio apt. I called the 800 number for the local power company (AEP) from my landline to either report the outage/ see if they had a restoration time line… the lovely automated voice line told me i could report an outage, and check on restoration timeline, on their website…
Umm…how exactly am i supposed to visit your website, if i don’t have electricity to run my computer?
@Kyeh but that message makes sense today, as we all carry supercomputers in our pockets, that are always online and internet access is just a ubiquitous thing… back then, the ONLY way i had to get on the web was a desktop PC via Dialup…no…i may have had DSL by then… eitherway…still needed power from the Grid…
@earlyre We almost all are … I have a Luddite friend who doesn’t use a smartphone and gets thoroughly freaked out by power outages because even his landline is on the electrical system.
I’ve got 6kWh of battery power. Nine solar panels. Two dozen flashlights and 25 charged power banks (Thanks Meh! ) Two camp stoves and a shit ton of propane. Also a bazillion glowsticks… those are just for 10 year old me.
I laugh in the face of power outages… hell, I welcome it!
I’ll also probably build a fort in the basement, because forts.
Usually? “Goddamn squirrels.”
@werehatrack
My dad’s neighborhood it’s always the squirrels. You can walk down the street and see them fried to generator or wires.
How hot or cold will it get before the HVAC starts working again?
How long this time?
Eat the ice cream!
@andyw only during the warmer months!
@andyw @mycya4me I’m not taking a chance of it melting even in the cold depths of January.
@mycya4me Sorry, but I would eat in the depths of winter, too.
@andyw @mycya4me And have hot chocolate on standby to warm up afterwards.
KuoH
@andyw @kuoh I have Hot CoCo anyway. Waiting for it to warm up all the IceCream I have in the Freezer.
I just bought groceries!

@tweezak That is the Reason I have ALL hooked up to a surge suppressor power strip!
@mycya4me TrippLite Isobar. I just now learned they are part of Eaton. Hope they are still high quality.
Crap, I should have charged my devices!
Oh, Wait, I have power banks…
Crap, I should have charged my power banks!
SInce living in Florida for a long time, full house generator kicks in automatically. Nothing to worry about.
@olperfesser So does mine! I don’t live in FLA.
Drink the beer before it gets warm!

It’s pretty reliable here, but my thought is: “I guess I should have replaced the battery in the UPS.”

The kids will come out of their rooms!
Damnit, the well pump went off too- now I can’t flush the toilet!
@OnionSoup Same. No electric juice means no hydrogen oxygen juice. Seems to happen when I need to get in the bathroom to shower etc.

Don’t anybody move!
@ybmuG Thankfully I buy fuses in bulk.
1st: ‘Is it just us?’ Then listen for the sound of the neighbor’s generator.

@earlyre Hah, the power company here still has that message.
Back in dialup days, Earthstink had a recorded message advising to use their website to report service outages faster and more easily. Riiiiight.

“Did I sleep through another derecho?”
I guess they were serious about the final, final notice.
