@PlacidPenguin Do not need a video of a faucet dripping… Have that in my bathroom only it is the shower and to fix it they have to turn off the water for the entire building and said it likely won’t happen until next summer. So have a walmart bag hanging from it with a wash cloth in it (that I have to change out every 12 hours because it gets soaked and would prefer not to have mold) to stop the water torture of hearing the dripping all night.

I think what you are saying is that the university grade recording netwoked SW is fucked up?
They work you to death, they don’t pay you, and then they work you even harder because they won’t maintain their network and servers.
Perhaps adjunct professors should unionize. Would it do any good? At least you might get some PR out of it. And if you got PR, it might mess with institutional reputations and US News ratings and all that over time.
And universities do care about reputations. They don’t like being seen as being total slave driving assholes.
Remember when years back - was it Yale? Where the groundskeepers and cafeteria workers started organizing and getting PR about how bad it was. And Yale’s students turned sour on the place and boycotted/demonstrated, and Yale got horrible headlines for a long time, and had to cave? Or something, memory is hazy.
I know most universities are podunk in terms of visibility compared to Yale. But still, they’d care a little. They’d be embarrassed a little. It might matter if you all could get a national debate going on the class system in academia. Why your prob equally competent work is worth perhaps 1/30th the value of someone else’s work that is no better.
I don’t wanna see academic hiring turned into a free for all - that xfers power to the institutions, away from labor. But I would love to see the current masters/servants paradigm dragged thru the mud.
@f00l No the actual shell was fucked up. Whomever set it up didn’t know what they were doing. Problem for me was I had never set up a shell from scratch, am not all that familiar with this LMS so I didn’t know how to fix it - and tech support helped fuck it up even more as they weren’t all that familiar with this aspect of things as they were hired mostly to help students who can’t find X or can’t figure out how to use X feature and end up googling answers at times.
You can only unionize when it is not, essentially, a seller’s market. Zillions of adjuncts, most willing to work under any conditions. And schools in the bottom tiers of schools generally care more about other issues than the kind of reputation that schools in the top tier have and care about. The currency for why students go to each is different.

@f00l Starting a consulting business is too hard. I struggle with fatigue as part of the cancer issues. Age discrimination makes getting a full time “regular” academic job harder. As far as getting an MBA job… well again that depends on the company’s approach to hiring the overqualified who are “older”. Not so many willing to do that, legalities aside.

I was thinking you could craft the resume if you took some time - a year, say, to do it.
Re resume crafting: that’s the real point of independent consulting. I do not know how you’d get this off the ground. I have no expertise or industry knowledge. But you do.
So: pick an area that’s your target. Get in the door somehow. Do you have any connections where you might be able to publish magazine articles? Not academic pubs. Soft articles that cover something of interest in the industries you know about. Trade pubs and biz journal of the type you find in corporate break areas. You can use the “working on an article” angle to get interviews and connections. And those, plus the connections that come from actually writing an article, are the point of the whole thing.
Plus perhaps some low key consulting if you can get it. Nothing huge, unless you gave the energy for it. - in the beginning, for almost no $ or no $ at all.
Two points here: 1st, you are making contacts. Southerners are friendly and if they think you like private enterprise they’ll like you. Just meet people. Network - v low key unless something stellar drops in your lap - and then network some more. Figure out what you could write or you could offer to a biz that wouldn’t take everything out of you.
Then do it. I guess you are able to keep afloat for a while, sort of? So the immediate $ you bring in matters less that the new contacts who I presume will like you a lot.
You have a PhD and an MBA right? They ought to be impressed. Let them think you are a republican but never say so, and never say anything very specific re politics. Just carry the right vibe.
Instead, just make soft “pro-free-enterprise” and “pro-good-biz-environment” remarks that have a “sounds in sync with the biz community” vibe without ever actually being specific. Just say general things that make them think you might well be conservative, but don’t actually commit you or contradict your values.
Pick an industry that’s your target. Banking is good because they also do wills investments insurance trusts and whatall.
Or an investment house. Or insurance co. Or whatever. That’s the long term goal.
Then do enuf soft research or soft writing and soft networking and soft consulting that you’re getting known by some people. By then you should have a vibe for what and where the jobs are.
The idea is to build up the writing-magazine-networking-consulting-research capital (emphasis on networking) into near local biz knowledge of opportunities and people and attitudes.
Then start targeting specific positions and companies. By then you stand out because of competence and education and drive, but they think you’re one of them.
Someone could actually take this nationwide. I suppose.
Fam member got an MBA at UTA. Undergrad at UT, don’t know what major except not science.
Then he (pure charm) talked his way into a tech startup. The product was never great but it got him tons of connections. He sought connections. It was kinda obvious the startup wasn’t gonna be there long term after a while. But he did everything he could for about 3-4 years? Then when it was going down he managed to parlay all his connections into a jump to the insurance dept of a large Texas based bank. Where he’s happy and I presume well paid.
I know all this takes energy. And I assumed you had fatigue due to illness, but are not currently crippled by it.
I also assume you may have fatigue just because if the mental stress oh having a shit job and a difficult stressed out life, what w the kid and her kids, money, treatments, trying to stay cheerful, all that shit. Must take its toll.
Anyway the point is to just do what you can to open up the opportunities. Suppose you tried writing about local startups (soft mag article) and used that to meet a bunch of startup types? Those people would possibly be more open and willing to experiment than some place that’s established. Meet some, meet more, consult or mag articles or research or survey or whatever. And eventually you will start seeing possibilities to aim at. Does that make sense?
I kinda assume that you have huge stress because of that horrible job. And you try not to drag yourself down or drag others down. But it’s gotta be tough doing that grading for nothing.
If I were in that state, I would have the edges of depression hovering around. Trying to keep it at bay. Cause the basic facts, taken without the personality and personal gifts, are just such fucking downers. How you manage your positive mood I dunno but it must cost you some discipline sometimes.
So if you need a therapist or ssris or whatever, I hope you have them. Makes it a little easier. If you don’t need/want them, great.
It just seems like the more people connections and opportunity, the better the natural mood. The better and more positive the mood, the more people connections and opportunities. Feedback cycle. You know all that better than I.
If I am telling you things you know 10k times better than me already (which is likely), apologies. I just hate seeing you stuck and I also know how hard it is under stress to get your mind into the right frame. And getting the mind into the right frame and mood and then using that - deploying mood as a survival weapon - to gain contacts which might become alliances in time.
I dunno. Perhaps it’s all crazy. I think I’d try some crazy but not-too-crazy “might work” things in your shoes.
Another thing. You are in the south.
I don’t have formal structured religious beliefs. Perhaps you don’t either. Well, in the south, the great biz networking tools other than work connections are families friends college and church.
If you could find a church you kinda liked and could stand going to (didn’t say anything about believing) and just think if it as a spiritual quest - you might be astonished at the connections you made. You’d have to pick the church carefully. Middle class to upper class. Connected members. Belief systems open enough that no one asks you questions and you can stand to attend. Not places for old $ families - they will have too much social reserve. Rather something more modern and young.
Professionals and biz people as members. When you talk a to them don’t go into illness unless carefully and you are sure. Just stay bright and positive. Let them know your interests but don’t press. Self-confidence. Careful not to sound “better than”. Rather “one of”. If you handle this just right those people will do the work of networking you around the church for you. And those people can be extraordinary.
And since you will genuinely like them and they you, it’s real.
I dunno. There ought to be some other possibilities.
I dunno what you have the energy and reserves to tackle. I know it must be really tough. Just trying to cheer you on.
I do admire how you don’t, at least here, appear to fall prey to depression or whatever. You’re always up for things. Take that attitude into the biz world and it ought to be a winner even if you get there slowly.
@f00l I don’t have expertise in finance, accounting, etc. (the high demand areas), my area is management. I also don’t have the kind of work (non-academic) experience that adds credibility. I switched fields from outdoor stuff to business, and while I started and run (do not get paid though) an NGO, that is not a high demand skill. I do not have the energy, money, etc. to do what would need to be done to start up a consulting company and then drum up business.
How about a few soft articles to make connections? Try to meet startup people and biz people. Then meet more of them.
Make connections when you interview people for an article? Then make more when you publish it. Try the see if you can get invited to a few meetings or groups? See if anyone wants you to give a talk? Local is fine. Just see if any opportunities start to appear?
Also: talk openly if problems in the biz horizen you are aware of. Of industry SPR labor probs. Bit in spite of that - even if the sky is literally falling - be resilient, positive, upbeat. Local groups and biz people like upbeat.
Talk about probs all you want but always with a “we can overcome” attitude. Pretend to be a bit one of them. Discuss law and regulation if you need to but never should w your political colors.
Are there any decent Gulf Coast or MS mags you could write for?
The writing won’t pay much. The points of the writing are visibility and networking.
Don’t be rigid. Allow opportunities to flow. What matters is not “is my resume right” or whatever. What matters is attitude. “I can make this work”. Then do it.
Give away some freebie insights, always. Give away inspiration and make them think there’s lots more where that came from. Don’t be “academic” just use that for cred and visibility. Unless someone means hires you specifically for that. Appear to be hung-ho on biz even if you’re not.
They will like that, esp combined with the degrees. Someone may just offer you something. And all you have to do is be super friendly, positive interested, intelligent, talk to people, perhaps a tiny bit of journalism.
Much/most of your work will be straight informal conversation.
Try to join the kind of groups where you can meet and talk to owners or ceos. Esp older ones who will be intrigued. And then give them a huge smile and be interested and brilliant and charm their brains out. Make yourself seem as normal as possible, kinda “adventurous-normal”. Make them think they could have had a younger family member just like you. I swear someone will offer you something.
That shouldn’t take totally enormous energy. And every single piece of it is legit. And way easier than serious academic work or consulting or grading papers for $.02/hour.
I.E. be an entrepreneur. Be the entrepreneur of your own industry: yourself. Self-marketing, covert style. But don’t say that. Make them think their businesses are the most fascinating businesses ever created.
You are not seducing them here. You are seducing their minds with the possibilities you can help them and their managers envision.
I think you have - or are close to having and can easily polish - an excellent personality for making this project work.

@PlacidPenguin Do not need a video of a faucet dripping… Have that in my bathroom only it is the shower and to fix it they have to turn off the water for the entire building and said it likely won’t happen until next summer. So have a walmart bag hanging from it with a wash cloth in it (that I have to change out every 12 hours because it gets soaked and would prefer not to have mold) to stop the water torture of hearing the dripping all night.

They work you to death, they don’t pay you, and then they work you even harder because they won’t maintain their network and servers.
Perhaps adjunct professors should unionize. Would it do any good? At least you might get some PR out of it. And if you got PR, it might mess with institutional reputations and US News ratings and all that over time.
And universities do care about reputations. They don’t like being seen as being total slave driving assholes.
Remember when years back - was it Yale? Where the groundskeepers and cafeteria workers started organizing and getting PR about how bad it was. And Yale’s students turned sour on the place and boycotted/demonstrated, and Yale got horrible headlines for a long time, and had to cave? Or something, memory is hazy.
I know most universities are podunk in terms of visibility compared to Yale. But still, they’d care a little. They’d be embarrassed a little. It might matter if you all could get a national debate going on the class system in academia. Why your prob equally competent work is worth perhaps 1/30th the value of someone else’s work that is no better.
I don’t wanna see academic hiring turned into a free for all - that xfers power to the institutions, away from labor. But I would love to see the current masters/servants paradigm dragged thru the mud.
@f00l No the actual shell was fucked up. Whomever set it up didn’t know what they were doing. Problem for me was I had never set up a shell from scratch, am not all that familiar with this LMS so I didn’t know how to fix it - and tech support helped fuck it up even more as they weren’t all that familiar with this aspect of things as they were hired mostly to help students who can’t find X or can’t figure out how to use X feature and end up googling answers at times.
You can only unionize when it is not, essentially, a seller’s market. Zillions of adjuncts, most willing to work under any conditions. And schools in the bottom tiers of schools generally care more about other issues than the kind of reputation that schools in the top tier have and care about. The currency for why students go to each is different.

@f00l Starting a consulting business is too hard. I struggle with fatigue as part of the cancer issues. Age discrimination makes getting a full time “regular” academic job harder. As far as getting an MBA job… well again that depends on the company’s approach to hiring the overqualified who are “older”. Not so many willing to do that, legalities aside.

I was thinking you could craft the resume if you took some time - a year, say, to do it.
Re resume crafting: that’s the real point of independent consulting. I do not know how you’d get this off the ground. I have no expertise or industry knowledge. But you do.
So: pick an area that’s your target. Get in the door somehow. Do you have any connections where you might be able to publish magazine articles? Not academic pubs. Soft articles that cover something of interest in the industries you know about. Trade pubs and biz journal of the type you find in corporate break areas. You can use the “working on an article” angle to get interviews and connections. And those, plus the connections that come from actually writing an article, are the point of the whole thing.
Plus perhaps some low key consulting if you can get it. Nothing huge, unless you gave the energy for it. - in the beginning, for almost no $ or no $ at all.
Two points here: 1st, you are making contacts. Southerners are friendly and if they think you like private enterprise they’ll like you. Just meet people. Network - v low key unless something stellar drops in your lap - and then network some more. Figure out what you could write or you could offer to a biz that wouldn’t take everything out of you.
Then do it. I guess you are able to keep afloat for a while, sort of? So the immediate $ you bring in matters less that the new contacts who I presume will like you a lot.
You have a PhD and an MBA right? They ought to be impressed. Let them think you are a republican but never say so, and never say anything very specific re politics. Just carry the right vibe.
Instead, just make soft “pro-free-enterprise” and “pro-good-biz-environment” remarks that have a “sounds in sync with the biz community” vibe without ever actually being specific. Just say general things that make them think you might well be conservative, but don’t actually commit you or contradict your values.
Pick an industry that’s your target. Banking is good because they also do wills investments insurance trusts and whatall.
Or an investment house. Or insurance co. Or whatever. That’s the long term goal.
Then do enuf soft research or soft writing and soft networking and soft consulting that you’re getting known by some people. By then you should have a vibe for what and where the jobs are.
The idea is to build up the writing-magazine-networking-consulting-research capital (emphasis on networking) into near local biz knowledge of opportunities and people and attitudes.
Then start targeting specific positions and companies. By then you stand out because of competence and education and drive, but they think you’re one of them.
Someone could actually take this nationwide. I suppose.
Fam member got an MBA at UTA. Undergrad at UT, don’t know what major except not science.
Then he (pure charm) talked his way into a tech startup. The product was never great but it got him tons of connections. He sought connections. It was kinda obvious the startup wasn’t gonna be there long term after a while. But he did everything he could for about 3-4 years? Then when it was going down he managed to parlay all his connections into a jump to the insurance dept of a large Texas based bank. Where he’s happy and I presume well paid.
I know all this takes energy. And I assumed you had fatigue due to illness, but are not currently crippled by it.
I also assume you may have fatigue just because if the mental stress oh having a shit job and a difficult stressed out life, what w the kid and her kids, money, treatments, trying to stay cheerful, all that shit. Must take its toll.
Anyway the point is to just do what you can to open up the opportunities. Suppose you tried writing about local startups (soft mag article) and used that to meet a bunch of startup types? Those people would possibly be more open and willing to experiment than some place that’s established. Meet some, meet more, consult or mag articles or research or survey or whatever. And eventually you will start seeing possibilities to aim at. Does that make sense?
I kinda assume that you have huge stress because of that horrible job. And you try not to drag yourself down or drag others down. But it’s gotta be tough doing that grading for nothing.
If I were in that state, I would have the edges of depression hovering around. Trying to keep it at bay. Cause the basic facts, taken without the personality and personal gifts, are just such fucking downers. How you manage your positive mood I dunno but it must cost you some discipline sometimes.
So if you need a therapist or ssris or whatever, I hope you have them. Makes it a little easier. If you don’t need/want them, great.
It just seems like the more people connections and opportunity, the better the natural mood. The better and more positive the mood, the more people connections and opportunities. Feedback cycle. You know all that better than I.
If I am telling you things you know 10k times better than me already (which is likely), apologies. I just hate seeing you stuck and I also know how hard it is under stress to get your mind into the right frame. And getting the mind into the right frame and mood and then using that - deploying mood as a survival weapon - to gain contacts which might become alliances in time.
I dunno. Perhaps it’s all crazy. I think I’d try some crazy but not-too-crazy “might work” things in your shoes.
Another thing. You are in the south.
I don’t have formal structured religious beliefs. Perhaps you don’t either. Well, in the south, the great biz networking tools other than work connections are families friends college and church.
If you could find a church you kinda liked and could stand going to (didn’t say anything about believing) and just think if it as a spiritual quest - you might be astonished at the connections you made. You’d have to pick the church carefully. Middle class to upper class. Connected members. Belief systems open enough that no one asks you questions and you can stand to attend. Not places for old $ families - they will have too much social reserve. Rather something more modern and young.
Professionals and biz people as members. When you talk a to them don’t go into illness unless carefully and you are sure. Just stay bright and positive. Let them know your interests but don’t press. Self-confidence. Careful not to sound “better than”. Rather “one of”. If you handle this just right those people will do the work of networking you around the church for you. And those people can be extraordinary.
And since you will genuinely like them and they you, it’s real.
I dunno. There ought to be some other possibilities.
I dunno what you have the energy and reserves to tackle. I know it must be really tough. Just trying to cheer you on.
I do admire how you don’t, at least here, appear to fall prey to depression or whatever. You’re always up for things. Take that attitude into the biz world and it ought to be a winner even if you get there slowly.

@f00l I don’t have expertise in finance, accounting, etc. (the high demand areas), my area is management. I also don’t have the kind of work (non-academic) experience that adds credibility. I switched fields from outdoor stuff to business, and while I started and run (do not get paid though) an NGO, that is not a high demand skill. I do not have the energy, money, etc. to do what would need to be done to start up a consulting company and then drum up business.

How about a few soft articles to make connections? Try to meet startup people and biz people. Then meet more of them.
Make connections when you interview people for an article? Then make more when you publish it. Try the see if you can get invited to a few meetings or groups? See if anyone wants you to give a talk? Local is fine. Just see if any opportunities start to appear?
Also: talk openly if problems in the biz horizen you are aware of. Of industry SPR labor probs. Bit in spite of that - even if the sky is literally falling - be resilient, positive, upbeat. Local groups and biz people like upbeat.
Talk about probs all you want but always with a “we can overcome” attitude. Pretend to be a bit one of them. Discuss law and regulation if you need to but never should w your political colors.

The writing won’t pay much. The points of the writing are visibility and networking.
Don’t be rigid. Allow opportunities to flow. What matters is not “is my resume right” or whatever. What matters is attitude. “I can make this work”. Then do it.
Give away some freebie insights, always. Give away inspiration and make them think there’s lots more where that came from. Don’t be “academic” just use that for cred and visibility. Unless someone means hires you specifically for that. Appear to be hung-ho on biz even if you’re not.
They will like that, esp combined with the degrees. Someone may just offer you something. And all you have to do is be super friendly, positive interested, intelligent, talk to people, perhaps a tiny bit of journalism.
Much/most of your work will be straight informal conversation.
Try to join the kind of groups where you can meet and talk to owners or ceos. Esp older ones who will be intrigued. And then give them a huge smile and be interested and brilliant and charm their brains out. Make yourself seem as normal as possible, kinda “adventurous-normal”. Make them think they could have had a younger family member just like you. I swear someone will offer you something.
That shouldn’t take totally enormous energy. And every single piece of it is legit. And way easier than serious academic work or consulting or grading papers for $.02/hour.
I.E. be an entrepreneur. Be the entrepreneur of your own industry: yourself. Self-marketing, covert style. But don’t say that. Make them think their businesses are the most fascinating businesses ever created.
You are not seducing them here. You are seducing their minds with the possibilities you can help them and their managers envision.
I think you have - or are close to having and can easily polish - an excellent personality for making this project work.
