Goat Day #28: Bored/Board Games
7Hi there! It’s almost the end of my time as goat. If you haven’t already, get your nominations in for the fall autumn goat.
Today, I was doing some cleaning, and I stumbled across a box with a “Late for the Sky” label. Hmm, sounds familiar. I open it up, and inside there were a bunch of wootopoly games.
A while back, woot decided it would be hilarious to send me a ton of these things. 240 of them to be exact.
I gave some of them away, and donated about 200 of them to toys for tots.
I actually paid like $20 for a single copy of the game when it first launched. Not once have I played it, or even opened a copy of it.
I love board games, however I feel that I’m alone. While I own a bunch of them, they too, are pretty much unopened as I have a hard time finding anybody interested in playing. At least I can play jenga by myself!
What are your thoughts on board games? Do you have any favorites? What about cards? Crazy 8’s, War, Go Fish? Do adults do these things?
Checkers? Chess? Anybody?

Scrabble!
@nolrak Actual, in person scrabble, or mobile “Words with Friends” scrabble?
@lichme I’ll take what I can get, but I rather like the actual little wooden pieces, as long as the cat stays off the table
Ticket To Ride
@Janellekay
Never played it, so I watched this:
@Janellekay @lichme Hm, I was expecting this to be a game about the Beatles
@Janellekay @lichme @nolrak
Or hookers.
@Janellekay Europe!
Lord of the Rings Monopoly
Lord of the Rings Risk
Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit
Lord of the Rings Backgammon
Lord of the Rings The Board Game
Lord of the Rings, War of the Ring.
@duodec I’m failing to see the common theme here
@duodec @nolrak Board games, duh
@duodec
That’s Precious!
Yes, let’s talk board games.
I played a lot of Settlers of Catan, Munchkin variants, and Betrayal at the House on the Hill in college, as well as one memorable semester of long-running Diplomacy games. I also did a lot of tabletop roleplay, mostly Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition, but also BESM and GURPS. I don’t have a stable board game group around here, but I like buying games/dice/etc to support local stores, and sometimes they’re gifted to me. The chainmaille dice bag was gifted by a dear friend on my 21st birthday, for instance.
Apples to Apples is not really my style but I have a good and hilarious reason to own it, but that’s its own story.
I’m now involved in a regular story/indie/narrative tabletop RPG group, with different one shots each week. We’ve been playing a lot of Powered by the Apocalypse. I’m hoping to play Fate Accelerated one of these days, perhaps with my partner GMing, and/or find a campaign group for Tales from the Loop.
I just bought a couple of expansion packs for Cards Against Humanity. I’ve only played it twice. I don’t get out much.
CAH, and We Didn’t Play Test This At All.
These plus CAH, backgammon, RISK, Stratego but nobody to play with nowadays. Also no time.
Haven’t played Exploding Kittens yet but my GSDs are intrigued. And Fluxx is fun and fairly quick. Unless you’re playing Stoner Fluxx which can get discombobulating…
@llangley Let me know when you play EK. My box of it still remains untouched.
@llangley Ooh! Fluxx was another one of the ones I played a good bit of in college and haven’t thought of in yeaaaaaaaaars. It’s a fun and quick little one!
@Kawa @llangley We have a bunch of Fluxx games and it’s one I can get the kids to play.
@llangley @mfladd We played exploding kittens once. It was fun. I lost big time.
@Kawa @llangley @sammydog01 Should check out Loonacy , it’s made by the same company as Fluxx, a little bit faster and simpler than Fluxx and really good to play with people that don’t want to learn a new game. Was a big hit with my family that don’t play a lot of games. It also gets used as a 5 minute filler game while deciding what to play next.
FWIW Late For The Sky is one of my favorite Jackson Browne albums and song… I would have freaked out to get a box with that label!!
Cribbage. Board game? Card game? Both?
Back in the day - Risk.
Love Kismet (another version of Yahtzee)
I think I said this before but every time I go to Barnes and Nobles and see the board games I call it the “No friend zone” since I don’t have enough people (or the Meetup time) to play these interesting looking games.
I am with you, loved playing in college, would love to still but can’t find the people that will commit to the time to meet up and play.
Scotland Yard, Krazy Bee, Wits and Wagers, and many more
The one thing I’ll miss about my former office is that I used to play board games at lunch w/ a couple of co-workers…something different just about every day…lots of different games…alot of kickstarter ones to boot…and I don’t have the time right now anymore to go play on the weekends…
Yes! Pictionary, Scattergories, CAH, I love. Plus many others. Always wish others would play with me to no avail. (For my last birthday I had a bunch of girlfriends over and we played (how could they refuse? I was the birthday girl…)“Drawing without Dignity”- a dirty pictionary and so fun!)
Recently I played a dominoes game for the first time- Chicken Foot, and I loved it! Shopping for my own dominoes now.
Acquire is my favorite board game. First played it in the late 70s with a great friend from school & his family.
Bought my first PDA in about 2004 cuz I found an electronic version of Acquire (“Ack-wire”) for PalmOS.

Just played Robot Turtles with the kids.

Anyone know of a good cheap source for play money? I am working on a project and need some fake coins and bills to teach counting. Somewhat realistic would be nice but cheap is better. I am thinking about trolling yard sales for board games if I don’t run across something.
To return to the topic, I don’t play anymore. Time and lack of willing opponents are the problem here. I guess my favorite was trivial pursuit.
I talked myself out of buying Wootopoly. I wanted it for my collection of fun stuff but kept telling myself nobody has time to play. I would have bought them anyway at the firesale if I had wandered over to Woot and saw it.
@speediedelivery Dollar stores might carry them, party city maybe too.
@lichme Dollar stores here had a small set. The bills are very small and not many per set. I can use it but I am hoping for something a little better. I found some nice size, good looking ones but most are sold as one denomination so the price adds up. I am going to try a crafty place over the weekend to see if they carry anything interesting.
@speediedelivery put some money on the copy machine?

@RiotDemon @lichme The copier has crossed my mind. It would be easier and cheaper to replace over time.
There is a Party City not far from me. Looks like I need to stop in and check them out.
I have a fair collection of games, around 50 I think. I don’t play as much as I would like to. We have an odd schedule so it makes it hard to find groups/meet up. Try to play with just the 2 of us at home but still don’t play as often as I would like. Most recently been playing Citadels but haven’t played it enough to decide what I think of it.
Don’t know what my favorite would be but currently when I have people to play with my go to games would be Dixit , Codenames , or Ticket to Ride depending on the group.
@metaphore
Since picking it up from Humble Bundle as part of the $1 tier for their tabletop games bundle, I’ve played a bunch of games of Ticket to Rideon my phone.
I’m not liking a few things about the mobile version (which I won’t get into), but the game itself is interesting in a good way.
As I mentioned in another thread,
Risk, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Clue, checkers, chess, plus card games (the kind with , not Magic, Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z, etc).
You kids and yer newfangled games…
@ruouttaurmind
I’ve tried playing Scrabble on my phonee on online play, but the experience was less than mediocre.
