16Hello fellow Mehricans, it is once again time to think about joining Team BreakfastOctopi and experiencing the wonder & befuddlement that is Gishwhes.
What’s GISHWES? Glad you asked. It’s the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World has Ever Seen.
Basically it’s a chance to band together with random internet-folk and try to complete as many ridiculous challenges as you can. It’s a chance to get outside of your comfort zone. If that isn’t specific enough, you can check out the FAQ here.

I can testify that this was a great experience, that was both personally and relationally fulfilling.
Just for instance:
I reconnected with one of my mentors–and, as it happens, I went home for a wedding and saw him not long after. The fact that I’d recently sent him an effusive thank-you letter was a great way to restart the relationship. I heard a ton about what’s been going on in his life and in the lives of some other folks we both care about. Several of us are friends on Facebook as a result–and the kind that actually interact with each other. Plus, I have a whole new appreciation for a colleague (former underclassman) who went through some shit I just had no idea about. And, yeah, this man–the mentor–is again part of my life. It’s kind of amazing and totally awesome actually. If only for that, it would have been worth it.
I was forced to articulate a manifesto, which, if you don’t know, is exactly the sort of thing a crazy like me likes to–yea, verily, needs to and should–do. Alas, it’s also precisely the kind of thing that I’m always putting off. That too was gloriously fun and gratifying.
I got to collaborate with my kid to send a loving haiku to my sister, who deserves a lot more recognition than she gets and has made sacrifices that I don’t think she realizes that the rest of us see and appreciate. That was an all-round beautiful thing too.
The team was great. I got to know people on a level I never would have without the context of the competition. And, let me tell you, they’re damn fine people. The best. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Some of us are also assholes. But we’re damn fine assholes.
I was close at hand to see others (including the kid, again) being immensely imaginative and having tons of fun and sometimes going way outside their comfort zone.
All that being said, it was a bit stressful (worth it and in a good way, and probably also because it was a busy month at work), and up through the end of it, I was never quite sure that I was contributing my share or enough or whatever. It was a lot like being back in school for me–and probably every one of the teams and organizations I’ve ever led (not, I didn’t and wouldn’t lead this) or been actively involved in. It’s super rewarding and it takes effort. If I do it this year, I’d like to take maybe a week or two off. What I’d really like is to take that time off and get together with folks (beginning with @christinewas, but anyone who’s willing to find a common location; I really believed that we might be in Colorado by now) to make this shit happen. There are definitely ways to participate individually (e.g., that letter I wrote to my high school mentor), but much of the best of it is collaborative. I’d love to get my wife more involved (she actually helped me a lot last year, even though she wasn’t officially part of the team.)
I don’t actually regret the stress and the several last-minute deadlines. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t do more and wasn’t able to commit more time to it.
Because I want to do it right, if I do it, I’m going to hold off and see–about the time, about travel, etc.
But I wholeheartedly recommend it–especially if you do have some time, or are the slightest bit crafty or creative. Hell, I’m sure you’re way more creative than you think you are. And
I betyou definitely have more time than you think you do. Don’t be so damned lazy. I’m hoping to join you, and probably will if the team doesn’t fill up.Fuck, I think I almost talked myself into doing it again. But I’m going to wait, and leave room for you other slackers.

@joelmw I think it makes more sense for me to come down there. Especially since @stardate820926 is doing it. I think I’d even be willing to endure the first week of August in Texas to make it happen. No chance I can afford tickets any time soon, though. So… we shall see.
If I can do it, I think it might be best to fly in the middle of the gishing week. Then I could do a couple things at home and make sure I bring necessary materials for other items.

@christinewas I think it’d be cool if you came down, but I’m still not sure if I’m going to do it this year. I might, especially if I can get some time off. I actually really want to, but I hated the feeling of watching the whole thing fly by while I worked on work.
@jbartus That’s pretty cool. But I’m pretty sure that I’d both get hurt and look like a fool. So, bad example.
@joelmw looking at that video I feel like a person would have to mess up on an extreme level to hurt themselves doing that, that’s a deep river.
Naturally anything can happen, a bad fall and break your neck on impact and whatnot, but it’d be one of those fluke things I feel like.

, is that the list is humongous. There’ll be several things that your delicate disposition can handle. I say this as someone with a delicate disposition. And then you’ll realize that there are other things that you can do too. And then it’ll just be a matter of there being too many things and not having enough time.

I’m sad a few of you feel like you didn’t contribute enough. If you tackled one item I was soooo happy!
It’s about having fun doing something weird with others, now how many items you complete. If you are afraid of joining, or re-joining, keep that in mind.
@katylava I think you (and others) did a great job of encouraging us and I don’t feel like anyone ever made me feel like I didn’t do enough; it’s just one of those internal things. And in retrospect, I felt much better about my involvement. Maybe it’s the enormity of the list and seeing how awesome the things that other people did were (and by “other people,” I mean the awesome people on our team).

@sammydog01 Sure it’s fun, but it’s also a lot of hard, rewarding work, with a free trip at the end and a whole lot of jolly esprit de corps. Sort of like World War I.

I have no idea if I would be good for this or not. I had never heard about GISHWHES before this. As a newbie, I would hate to take up a spot of someone that’s been on this site a long time.
I will look upon the website to get an idea about the challenges to see if I would of been able to do any of them.

@Pavlov is indisposed working on one of the teams doing the Rouge One reshoots. The crew expects they are reshooting ~40% of the film. They have been working fourteen hour days, six days a week, for a couple weeks now and they’ll be banging it out for eight to ten weeks or more total. He said, the last time I spoke to him, they may start working seven days a week. They have now created or recreated over 30 sets for the reshoots. The film is - well, it may be in a wee bit of trouble. No surprise there, and widely reported / rumored.
I’m desperately trying to get this fundraiser I’ve been working on completed, we’re raffling off a brand new Mercedes and a trip to Fashion Week in NYC - we’re close, but not there yet - I better pass. Plus, I’m one parent parenting it while the old man is having the time of his life.

@dashcloud Thanks. I’ve got some personal stuff happening right now that’s really messing me up… So I can’t commit at the moment. Depends on how things pan out.

@dashcloud Thank you, but I absolutely suck at this type of thing. I’m not crafty or creative and am a terrible team player. A friend has also tried to get me to join up, but I passed then, too. Maybe next year I’ll suck less.
@dashcloud I genuinely think I’d be a let-down, with very little output. I’m not saying no, but… I’m just not sure it’d work out so well.

@dashcloud As @mfladd can attest, I don’t come willingly into the light, so this sort of public activity doesn’t appeal. I know that @mfladd appeared in various disguises last year, but I don’t have the time or energy to get that creative with being creative.
With me not being willing to join the team myself, I don’t think it would be fair to recommend anyone else. That said, it does seem like some of the more gregarious newbies might enjoy the instant forum cred that comes from this sort of activity.
@dashcloud it is tempting because i do like this sort of crazy thing. unfortunately, due to certain life circumstances that will be taking up a lot of my time and energy, i wouldn’t be a good player this year. i’m definitely down for next year though!

@mfladd sorry, i was just trying to put @dashcloud off to give me more time to investigate. I should not joke about death/funerals, but I have an older Cousin who used a similar line to put off his Viet Nam draft medical exam. The Army questioned how he could predict his attendance at a funeral that far in advance. He was drafted within hours supposedly… Not a good excuse for the morbid joke but he’s one hell of a great guy/Cousin and we still laugh at his knee-jerk statement almost 50 years later

@christinewas Thank you for the nomination! This kind of thing sounds like fun. I do have a couple of caveats, in that I work a lot (too much), am likely going to be neck deep in two big implementations for two of my companies in that timeframe, and may also be closing on a house right about then. So I don’t want to take up a spot and be a letdown by being too busy. But I am interested, just want to be up front about what all I expect to be involved in around the end of July/beginning of August.
@djslack Wow! That is a lot of stuff happening at the same time. Since our team is only doing it for fun, I don’t think anyone would be upset if you didn’t end up having time to do much. If you think you could at least send in a picture for the team item (last year was mustaches), and you think it would be fun to try to participate, I think you should go for it. If your busy schedule makes it seem more stressful than fun, though, that’s totally understandable.

@dashcloud Thanks for thinking of me! You’re right - not only does this look like an amazing amount of fun, but it is typically something that I would do. That being said, I am nearing the end of my degree and taking a full load this summer that entails 15 week classes squished down to 7 weeks each…2 classes each 7 weeks. At this point, even my family is coming second. I would LOVE to do it next year if it happens though.

Mind Melding/ESP/Nosepicking/Telekinesis – Although not mandatory for Hunt participation, all of them are highly encouraged for a fruitful Hunt experience.

@dashcloud Serious questions, with none of the sarcasm I normally imbue in my comments…Then why is it a commandment? Do you think it was a test to see if you were really reading that far? (If so, it was funny!) To me, it makes it seem like the serious commandments are suggestions rather than rules? Not making a big deal out of it, just a bit confused.

@mikibell Okay, now having read all the commandments, I think I can answer your question:
The contest is filled with a certain sort of whimsy, and randomness, while also trying to pop culturally relevant. I also think your idea of testing if people read that far is a good one- see the post about commandment 36, which is no longer around and will be celebrated on Aug 3rd on Twitter.

Oh gishwhes (I’m not doing any crazy dances…), I so want to join this year. Last year was such a nightmare experience for me. My team didn’t communicate well at all and then stupid fights broke out between sides.
We had a spreadsheet that was made up, to make it easier, and only two folks used it. While me and two local members were trying to knock out items and submit, the remaining members were complaining, trying to do better than what was submitted, and just putting us down…

@jbartus Let me sleep on it. I would love to give it another go. Just a bit cautious after last year.
@MzSooze do keep in mind we’re in the just for fun category so it will be much less “SERIUZ BUSINEZZ” than your other team sounded like it was thereby hopefully leading to less unpleasantness and drama.
@MzSooze the only problems we’ve had in the two years we’ve done this is some people ended up not being able to participate at all, due to life stuff. never been any fighting or lack of encouragement.
we communicated via Slack last time, and everyone used the spreadsheet.
@MzSooze Last year was fun and we all got along just fine. Plus expectations were low.

We are getting close, time is winding down, there’s a Gishbus at Comic Con, and I’m excited!!! Please note, I am not in San Diego so the excitement level isn’t as great as it could be.
That being said. I know it was said somewhere in this thread, but I can’t seem to find it. What are you using to communicate with each other during the hunt? Thanks.

@MzSooze I’ll be setting up a Slack channel for Gishwhes, and emailing everyone the link. I’ll also include some other helpful details to make things go smoother.

Oooh. I signed up as a random person. Didn’t know there was a team of Mehricans. Do you still need peeps? Is it still an option to request to join a particular team?

Hello fellow Gishwhes team members- you’ve probably gotten an email from Misha about registration closing shortly (about 2 hours from the time of this post), and that the Hunt begins on Saturday.
You also should have a email inviting you to the Slack channel for our Gishwhes team.
