I didnt really get his appeal on Magnum PI (was early teens) but i figured it out when i saw him again while he was Monica’s boyfriend on Friends.

@simplersimon Have a certain fondness for "Crossfire Trail.“
I keep telling myself *it’s just a man on a horse, baby girl,” but whooo! Selleck does the western very well. My husband appreciates the fact he makes sure the guns are period correct. I blame the Sharps in our house on Tom Selleck.
Commissioner Regan, Blue Bloods. I’m from NY and my Dad was in the NYFD for over 30 years so I’m partial to the character and I love the nighttime flyover scenes of NYC.
@Chakolate The reason I like it is I did my doctoral dissertation centered in Ethics and a lot of the program deals with ethical issues that the commissioner is dealing with. Does that happen in the real world, no probably not but I would like to see it more that way. It has been getting a little too liberal lately for me and they are certainly pushing narratives this past season that I don’t agree with but I generally like the acting.
I do have an issue with the younger brother that went through law school to become a beat cop. Yeah, pay off law school on a cops salary. Not going to happen.
@ruouttaurmind@RiotDemon Body hair is a sign of testosterone. So are a strong jawline, pronounced Adam’s apple, deep voice, and broad shoulders. On a fundamental level it represents a strong virile male, good potential breeding stock. Male beauty traditionally has included these traits, just as female beauty largely includes traits that suggest good breeding stock, large breasts and wide hips. Fashion trends come and go but these primal values never entirely fade.
That said, I don’t care for body hair on guys myself, other than a nice “treasure trail”.
@cengland0 I had a school mate who was an extra on one episode. Had to sit around the pool at the King Kamehameha Club in a bikini. She was gorgeous and ended up as a bikini centerfold one month in one of the surfing magazines during her brief stint in the Islands.
Monicas boyfriend on FRIENDS was his best recurring role, but I’ve never seen Magnum, or Blue Bloods. Neither seemed too appealing. He’s an outspoken Conservative so he doesn’t get choice roles and has to make do with what’s offered. Probably why we didn’t get to choose his best role as Eisenhower in “Ike: Countdown to D-Day”, one of the best TV movies ever.
I can’t believe that Meh forgot to add “Quigley Down Under”! Shame! As much as I loved Magnum P.I. when I was young, I love Quigley today. Love classic Tom Selleck and Laura San Giacomo and Alan Rickman!
it’s not that i’ve never heard of tom selleck? i mean, i’ve certainly heard the name but this poll made me realize that beyond that i really have no idea what it is that he’s known for. but i suppose taking the time to write this comment over googling him illustrates how much i care about remedying that
As Jesse Stone in the adaptations of Robert B. Parker’s novels.
Bob Parker said that Tom’s ‘Jesse’ was about as close as any actor he knew could get to the heart of ‘Jesse’.
BTW…if anyone reads books anymore…read all of Parkers books from his first published to his last (that’s called chronological [damn! spelled it right on the first try! do I get a participation trphoy?]).

the police man from Maine (can’t remember what is called)
@Oldelvis Jesse Stone? I liked those as well, but there’s just something about Magnum PI; I still enjoy the reruns.
@Oldelvis Jesse Stone is what I came to say. I also like Commissioner Reagan a lot.
Reverse Mortgage guy
@awk Hands down. Best Selleck performance ever.
was he on murder she wrote? wasn’t everyone on murder she wrote? if so that one.
@thismyusername I think JB Fletcher showed up on Magnum PI once.
@duodec they showed up on each other’s shows, it was a two-part crossover.
Ivan from Boston Legal

@ruouttaurmind Yes! I came here just to say that. One of the best Westerns ever, and my favorite movie set in Australia. So good.
@LaVikinga He’s an avid shooter and firearms collector. Not exactly the stereotypical Hollywood liberal type.
@ruouttaurmind And a genuinely nice man.
Commissioner Regan, Blue Bloods. I’m from NY and my Dad was in the NYFD for over 30 years so I’m partial to the character and I love the nighttime flyover scenes of NYC.
@bsci87 I really need to catch up on that show. Definitely good TV.
@bsci87 I watched that show originally because I like Selleck. Usually if a not-very-good show has a star you like, you end up liking the show.
That show is so bad, in so many ways, that it’s made me dislike Selleck. Bad writing, bad acting, absent directing… so many ways.
It’s even beginning to make me dislike cops. Heck, it’s even making some of my cop friends dislike cops.
@Chakolate The reason I like it is I did my doctoral dissertation centered in Ethics and a lot of the program deals with ethical issues that the commissioner is dealing with. For some reason, I thought when I read the poll, he was the bandit from Smokey and the Bandit.
That was apparently Burt Reynolds.
Do I suddenly think all mustached men are the same?
@RiotDemon Yup. Smokey was the best Tom Selleck character.
@mike808 Jeezus Burt, put some freakin’ clothes on!
And find a waxing salon for cripes sake…
@ruouttaurmind wasn’t that picture super popular when it came out? Sign of the changing times I guess.
@RiotDemon Mmm… hairy dudes just not my cuppa I guess.
@ruouttaurmind me neither.

#1: Commissioner Frank Reagan (duh)
#2: Jesse Stone (@oldelvis)
#3: Matthew Guigley (movie: Quigley Down Under)
#4: Magnum
His later work is his best! (IMHO, of course)
@phendrick You forgot his cameos in Archer.
@phendrick And his masterwork as Zardoz.
@phendrick Dont forget Mendez.
@mike808 isn’t that Burt Reynolds in Archer? Or is that the joke?
@RiotDemon And Sean Connery as Zardoz.
@phendrick Selleck as Oates in the The Hall & Oates rockumentary on VH-1
@mike808 You sure that’s not Freddie Mercury?
@phendrick Must have been a follow up role. No head shot or a press pic?
@phendrick Tom Selleck revealed his most challenging role in a ‘Between Two Ferns’ interview - guest hosting Family Feud:
@phendrick Found Selleck in a dress rehearsal for the VH-1 ‘Where are they now?’ as Freddie Mercury.
When we lived in Hawaii my dad was asked to be an extra on one of the Magnum PI episodes.
@cengland0 I had a school mate who was an extra on one episode. Had to sit around the pool at the King Kamehameha Club in a bikini. She was gorgeous and ended up as a bikini centerfold one month in one of the surfing magazines during her brief stint in the Islands.
Cajun Country loves dat Magnum Pooyai! Aieeiiieee!
Quigley
The reporter in In and Out.
@huja yup, this is my vote too.
@huja I forgot he had no mustache in that movie.
It amazes me how well Tom Selleck has aged.
Peter Mitchell 3 Men and a Baby
MacGyver
Quigley, like me.
QUIGLEY

“Chinese Democracy is the best Guns ‘N’ Roses album, but I’ve never heard Appetite for Destruction”
or maybe
“Spray cheese from a can is the best topping for hot dogs, but I’ve never tried mustard”
Indiana Jones
… he wasn’t a Baywatch character, was he? That’s the joke response, right?
Did I joke properly?
I just want to make sure that I am applying humor within the established boundaries.
I can’t believe that Meh forgot to add “Quigley Down Under”! Shame! As much as I loved Magnum P.I. when I was young, I love Quigley today. Love classic Tom Selleck and Laura San Giacomo and Alan Rickman!
@sjk3 Rickman and Selleck? Checking Netflix etc, have to watch that
@mollama Holy crap! I just found out Professor Snape died?
@mollama It’s a great rainy Saturday afternoon movie.
Jesse Stone, one of the great ongoing performances in all of television. A flawed but dogged character surrounded by an outstanding supporting cast!!
Sports star getting knee surgery in the movie Coma. Or as the spokesman for Chaz cologne.
Jesse Stone
Blue Bloods…he’s super sexy.
Mr. Baseball . . . Quigley Downunder meets Magnum PI
Jack Ramsay, “Runaway”
@eonfifty That was an interesting movie.
@duodec Yes. I haven’t seen it since it came out on VHS. I just watched the trailer and had no idea Gene Simmons was in it.
