I grew up near farms that grew table beets. My older brother worked at one when he was in his teens. We had beets far too often. Every beet season my parents would say the exact same thing they said the previous year: “These are so sweet they taste just like candy!” My mom said the same thing the other day about 40 years later. I finally pointed out that any company that made candy that tasted like that would deservedly go out of business in days if not hours.
Beets are vile and should only be eaten under duress or in an emergency.
@tweezak
I spend a lot of time at the farmers market (worked there for a couple seasons) and hear that a lot too. I understand the expression bc for a vegetable to be that sweet it has to taste of candy. I love beets but I didn’t grow up eating them at all. I can’t ever remember having beets for dinner, we always had steamed broccoli with cheese. I hated, hated I mean would sit at the table until bed bc I refused to eat broccoli hated. About a year ago I tried some that was sautéed with garlic and butter and now I love it.
@Star2236@tweezak
Yeah, the way veggies are cooked makes a huge difference. I always hated brussel sprouts until I tried them oven roasted with a lot of garlic; they get crunchy and lose that yucky boiled-cabbagey taste. In fact, most veggies aren’t good boiled.
@Star2236@tweezak Broccoli is bitter to some people. If you are have one specific of the, I think, 5 bitter genes you won’t like that nor several other veggies. I suppose there is a way to doctor those veggies so that the bitter taste is disguised, but then again I like broccoli so wouldn’t know. IF you have that gene you found a way. Garlic covers a multitude of sins. I hate garlic as that is a flavor that keeps on giving for hours after the meal.
@Kidsandliz@tweezak
After I eat a bunch of garlic in something I have to eat something like a bite of chocolate to get the taste out of my mouth. I like it but it can be very overpowering. Roasted garlic is another story, I can eat that like candy except it will give me heartburn like a mutherfucker.
Beets taste like what I would expect dirt to taste like. I have distant memories of eating dirt as a toddler, and it tasted like Beets.
I had Golden Beets in a salad once. I tolerated them but could not admit it to my wife, so I feigned disgust.
@accelerator We grow a few beets in our garden every year. My wife makes a beet salad with cubed red and gold beets, feta cheese and pecans with an apple cider vinaigrette. We like it as a side dish at family gatherings.
@blaineg
I never at any veggies until I was probably 20 years old except lettuce. A salad would be lettuce, cheese and dressing. But my boyfriend makes me try everything and I find I like a lot of stuff if it’s cooked right. Except for fish, I hate fish, it’s a texture thing.
@Star2236 I hated fish until I went to England. But all I’d ever had was crappy school lunch/cafeteria fish.
My first night in England we went to a typical local fish & chips shop. They practically twisted my arm to make me try the fish. I’m glad they did, it was amazing!
Fresh, very fresh, cod with very fat cut “french fries”, all perfectly cooked, and served with salt and malt vinegar (more arm twisting there), wrapped in paper & newspaper.
@blaineg
It’s a texture thing for me and the fishy taste. There’s some I’ll take a bite of if it’s fresh and cooked right, again my boyfriend makes everything but I usually can’t get past the texture.
@blaineg@Star2236 My older sister and her husband used to have a “Dairy Take-away” (mini-mart with cooked food to go) in a beach town in New Zealand. BIL would walk over to the docks first thing in the morning and buy fresh caught rock fish or shark or whatever looked good, right off the fishing boats. Then they would fry up fresh fish and chips to order. Best Fish & Chips evah!
@macromeh@Star2236 Definitely! It’s easy to get fresh fish anywhere in the UK. But fishing port town chippies often have a board listing which fish came off of which ships today.
That looks like it goes with the vibrators you sold yesterday.
@Felton10 That’s “beats”…
@Felton10 @shahnm The question should have been beets on or beets off?
@Felton10 @pmarin Beets on or beats off…?
I am not sure. I don’t remember ever having them.
@yakkoTDI Yea, where’d they go?
Beets are awesome. Pickled beets are even more awesome!
VAN GOGH! MANGO! TANGO! AWESOME!
@CatsAreGods Sliced pickled beets are from the gods. Other beets are… not
@CatsAreGods Fun fact: if you eat enough red beets, you pee pink!
? Beets me.
Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.
All I can think of is the Portlandia sketch with people frantically calling 911 and the operators always having to ask “did you eat beets?”
@kostia This is the first I’ve heard of Portlandia, but it looks like your referring to this awesome sketch:
P.S. Thank you for introducing me to this.
FOOLS! TOOLS! JEWELS! AWESOME!
@xobzoo If this kind of thing makes you laugh, it’s pretty much all like this. Very dry. Recurring characters reward watching from the beginning.
@kostia @xobzoo there is also documentary now! Which feels like the same style to me. Portlandia might not be for everyone/ever episode but I liked it
@kostia @unksol @xobzoo
Oh Portlandia
You must have organic beets
And free range chicken
@kostia @pmarin @xobzoo it works for me because they are making fun of Seattle. In a way that we will know is not true. But there’s a little bit that is
@kostia One time when we left Disneyland, I bought some candy for the drive home (about a hundred miles). One of the boxes was “Boston Baked Beans”.
Yeah, same result as beets. A little concerning at first until we compared notes and realized we had the same problem.
@kostia @lisaviolet Ah, yes. FDA Red Dye #40.
Voted no… but meant f*** NO!

I wondered about that! Maybe there’s a gene for beets tasting like dirt, too.

So red and tasty
Though some find them unpleasant
Mom said Eat your Beets!
@pmarin How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your beets?!?
I love them but I never ate them as a child.
Beets are revolting. SWMBO loves them.
@blaineg Same for Brussel sprouts.

Hey @mediocrebot. You planning to sell us freeze dried
muscle enhancementbeet drink in the future? Is this why you want to know?@Kidsandliz Oh, I bet you’re right!
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh
I don’t like beets that much.
Costco has these and they’re delicious.

@mike808

Bet they don’t have THIS!
@chienfou @mike808 Whole Foods has THIS:
