I just saw this show up in the “popular” questions (for whatever definition of popular there is nowadays on Deals).
http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/3286ba3e-87af-47d6-a4e2-45c95c04c642/deals-woot-rip-november-24-2009-july-31-2016
Yep. July 31, 2016, and it’s gone.
We knew it was coming. It was just a matter of when.
For Deals.wOOt
I loved it there back in the day. My first time being #1 was awesome.
@conandlibrarian I just looked back at my past deals. This was my best one:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/f8eab123-8d33-41c2-84fa-fdadb5c45b00/mp3-store-top-mp3-albums-1-99-or-less-today-only#15
I was so excited when this happened.
Thanks @Shrdlu much appreciated. Hoping we can save the thread over there for later reading as I guess my suggestion that it will survive on Internet Archive isn’t technically going to be the case with dynamic content.
For the record, I don’t recommend mention of our site in their shutdown thread. Let’s be respectful: if you had memories there we can leave them there. I guess they have PMs if you feel strongly about an individual.
@snapster I saw your post over there. XXOO
@snapster
Well, i fucked up and mentioned this as a place to hang out before i saw your post here. Too late to edit now i think.
Sorry, perhaps a bit clueless of me.
@f00l oh don’t feel bad, it’s completely reasonable - just good to not have it be a misunderstood collective effort.
I just posted this… feel free to add to it. Nor not. You know, meh.
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/d6027688-df76-4f12-b8f1-c7b65ba34e1c/lobsters-unite-15-5-inch-rubber-lobster-toys-games
@ACraigL done
@ACraigL I added one also, to ‘compliment’ yours…
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/98f63abf-2963-4bc5-9cb2-9fee141c5c14/rasta-imposta-lightweight-lobster-costume-red-one-size-clothing#0
@daveinwarsh Yep, that’s the idea! One last deals takeover.
@ACraigL @daveinwarsh, I’ll join this. Strange how easily posting a deal comes back to mind. Like riding a fucking bicycle.
@studerc We got 2 in the ‘top’ tab now, and I think @daveinwarsh’s is imminent.
Post them lobster products people!
@ACraigL I TOTALLY forgot about the fact that deals from the same site will drop down underneath one another. Accidentally placed two amazon deals within 15 mins. Damn.
@studerc I always hated that. Haha, forgot all about that
Ha! @faughtey just added a lobster shirt!! (not sure he’s a mehmber, but @ mentioned anyway)
@ACraigL I saw that, love the fact that there is still a sense of humor laying around over there!
@ACraigL and @snapster joins in on the fun! We could probably cover that top deals page from top to bottom, we just need more votes!
@ACraigL I’m in http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/207ab7fb-e670-436f-86b8-eadb370071fa/7-wooden-lobster-mallet-crab-mallet
@ACraigL count me in http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/16c7feac-cf80-4a4a-be37-6f1815097a72/decorative-lobster-trap#0
@snapster Wondering if we could get a broadcast for this?
@daveinwarsh I just posted the lobster raft and then found yours. You Bastard! I deleted.
@ACraigL Heh. I foolishly visited Deals today thinking I might find some deals that WEREN’T LOBSTER RELATED. LOL!
Silly, I know…
Ok, I added for lobster socks for @medz.
Save $7.50.
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/39efea23-b77d-4743-a1b4-44c2d6472a43/embroidered-lobster-decorative-pillow-18x18
LOBSTERS UNITE!
My lobster socks did not produce a pic. I am better than that. I just got excited. FUCK!
@ACraigL Did we break it? I can’t seem to load any of the deals.woot pages.
@studerc I can still get there. But your allposters.com additions are collapsed into a single thread now.
@mfladd I thought it was crabs…
@medz Crabs are the past, Lobsters are the new.
@mfladd
Sorry 'bout that…
@ACraigL I posted some ridiculous $900 LOBSTER machine. Thanks for the heads up on the tribute. I didn’t shop those pages often, but did find some mighty sweet deals there over the years. RIP Deals.Woot
@daveinwarsh lol…we be good, bitch. Great song!

I suppose I am both very sad (such great times and great people) and relieved (It’s dead, Jim.)
I offer a salute to many great thoughts and conversations, and to all the people who made it so compelling.
@f00l FWIW, I would look for your audiobook deals every morning. You were kind enough to post Audible and Nook deals in one spot. Two birds, one stone as they say. Easier than going to each site on my own.
So, from me at least, your efforts weren’t futile. I actually made several audible purchases after checking Deals for your posts.
Indeed a sad day. For me, that’s really where everything started in terms of actually joining the community. The hunt for reputation, the hidden awesomeness of an occasional “q” thread, coupon codes, MOM?!, it was hard to leave it…but it did make saying goodbye a bit easier now.
Farewell deals.woot.
Paid my respects
for posterity
@studerc #78…reputation 98.13%
so any chance there will be a deals.meh.com?
@snapster
@communist
I would like PM’s…and bookmarkable threads…and on-site search…and a complete absence of Amazon storefront spam.
@communist it still fits into my view of how I should shop on the internet and I think what we had in 2009 was superior UI to anything else that exists. But, reality is on display: it required a big pipeline of traffic and it wasn’t a great growth engine on it’s own. I’d think of it as on the list but a “if we can get big again” thing.
@snapster Time will tell on that. Being the CEO and founder, Woot didn’t reach its peak overnight either.
For everyone else –
Enlarged
@narfcake ha. haven’t done that search. I’m either good at selling at the right time or running a business. I’ll take either.
@snapster Perhaps both? Things would’ve probably been way different if Woot was handled in the same “hands off” treatment that Zappos got.
Then again, maybe they were surprised that your product planning board
doubledwas a dart board.@narfcake If you look at the current google trend with meh.com and woot.com search terms, Meh surpassed woot for the first time recently. I am pretty much done with woot.
@laidbackoh Not by much, but it was bound to happen.
Enlarged.
There’s still a long ways to go before meh is “big”, though.
@narfcake Way better than incest over time.
The old days over there will continue to be missed, now I won’t pop in to see if things changed for the better. On a positive note, I see that the community over here is no longer blocked by whatever system we are running this week at work, so good or bad for all of you, i will be here more often
@natedogg828 and, we can say “fuck!” over here with impunity.
@carl669 I fucking love it. It was SO HARD to write my statement over at deals without peppering in a few sentence enhancing fucks.
@carl669 that’s great fucking news
@natedogg828 that’s the spirit! add to the fuck count
@carl669
O fucking k

@f00l Fuck, that is a mother fucking ton of fucks, you magnificent fucker
@natedogg828
@Mom?
@f00l
NSFW:
No need for it with Slickdeals.net
@juststephen folks here aren’t missing the source for deals as much as the community that formed. I actually appreciated the engineering of deals.woot a ton more but hard to contest that slickdeals.net had the critical mass. Even they are quite stagnant though - mainstreamers joining the web the last 7 years don’t have the same zest for hunting down deals as the earlier crowd did.
@JasonToon
Watching that makes me so sad for another reason altogether. Wtf that she’s not still recording incredible stuff?
@f00l Well, it would take some incredibly sophisticated recording equipment and someone who could bring more than just dead careers back to life.
I was happy to see the Archive Team is up for, and able to archive the whole site before it goes:
(Donate a little something to https://archive.org/donate/ if you never have, they store & host so much good stuff, including the sites that the Archive Team saves.)
@dave
Awesome and thx. Will donate.
@dave I wish Amazon would send the server code in to be public domain. I wonder if there’s a repository that offers that?
@snapster
Anyone over there who still owes you and could offer that favor?
@f00l it’s too unusual a request - would have to go through corporate counsel and they’d not see any benefit and lots of risk.
@dave
On the archive - will anyone be able to see the ATC “q” stuff?
@f00l no presumably that’ll just be lost since they wouldn’t have an account that accessed it.
Pls forgive some mild insanity…
In honor of what deals.woot once was, I will attempt to post something utterly illogical, completely irrelevant, and irretrievably sentimental.
Never bothered to figure out the bbcode over there.
one of the best moments i can remember:
Well, we got the whole fresh page (except for the dumbass watch in the middle.
@ACraigL Fucking GearXS bullshit. Hate that company.
@ACraigL My desire to post was quickly quelled after @faughtey mentioned we would need views and click throughs in order to gain access to the popular page…ugh. Too many hoops.
@studerc So basically, they can’t even have fun on their last days.
@mfladd I mean, jesus fuck July 26th only had two popular/top deals (-3 and -1)…the fuck is going on. Let us have some fun…already given that site more traffic today than it’s seen in 2 years!
@studerc Sure, but she made the comment on the Q side. Not everyone will see it. She’s still staff, and I’d guess she has to be careful in what she does or doesn’t say.
One thing Deals has done is make me VERY cautious when buying on Amazon. I almost never buy from storefronts, now, and I used to not even think about it. Thinkgeek has that same problem (storefronts).
Off to the garden. Enough sadness and nostalgia.
@Shrdlu Yea, I get that and honest to goodness…it’s probably best for her to simply err on the side of caution when it comes to upholding the order of things.
Enjoy your garden time, take a break from the “feels”.
Damn onions.
@studerc
True story and you’ll like it: A friend of @Pavlov’s (cough) was shopping a domain name to several deal of the day websites years ago (mysterybox.com) - there wasn’t much interest. It wasn’t well being promoted and the price may have been a bit high. Come to find out there was (and still is) a trademark issue with that character string, both in the US and EU (there may be more now than then), so this friend withdrew the name and parked it, making decent click revenue. One day, this friend ordered something from GearXS and when it arrived it was complete refurbished shit. I mean it even smelled like shit. They were a hassle to deal with for returning it and it really pissed this friend off. So this friend made all nice with those guys during the very long return process and told them (after reeling them in and playing buddy-buddy for few weeks) that woot.com was highly interested in a domain name he owned. They inquired about it and without doing any due diligence they snapped it up in less than a week - they ended up paying just shy of $10k for the domain name. They’ve never used it - and it still sits as a “coming soon” page to this very day. If they do turn it up, and they use it in commerce, they are facing an uphill fight from a valid rights holder and will probably get a cease and desist if not sued.
TL;DR
They’re shit and I know someone that fucked them in the ass without offering a reach around.
@MrsPavlov I think I’m in love.
http://deals.woot.com/deals/search?q=lobster&page=1&sort=mostrecent
Lobsters Rock!
I can’t say I’ll miss it much, really. It seemed to go downhill faster and more absolutely than the main Woot site–which at least still as BoCs and some fun videos and events. In fact it seems like staff at deals.woot weren’t just watching it die but actively contributing to its demise. For example…
Best of deals.woot - Acrostic Rebellion
When Meh launched two years ago deals.woot rejoiced in welcoming a new source for deals in the jolly spirit of healthy competition… fuck no, that’s not what happened, they instantly banned Meh and moderators pulled on their jackboots and deleted anything that made mention of Meh. Fortunately Meh users are a clever bunch and get some sub-rosa references snuck in, in ways the mods never figured out, such as acrostic poetry:
A good one, acrostic for MEH
My contribution, acrostic for OCTOPUS
Not an acrostic, but a good poem
OK, I guess they weren’t all that subtle.
@Starblind OMG…this! Subtle? Hard pass on that action. Haters gonna hate.
But what will happen to all of our black triangles?
Not meaning to make light of the history, but I must have gone through my grieving long ago. The finality is a jolt, but not completely a surprise.
@KDemo theyll probably try and sell those also…just like the other 10,000 products they try and sell everyday
@studerc
@KDemo
We’ll always have Black Triangles
@KDemo I turned mine into a bikini bottom. My triangle! MINE! MINE! MINE!
@LaVikinga I will play you in rock, paper, scissors for them.
@mfladd Chil’, you ain’t right in the head!
@LaVikinga Nope. Never have been.
I haven’t deals.wooted in many a year, so this was not a big deal to me. But checking out this thread I have to say I love what you guys are doing with the place in its final days. What a fun send-off!
Can I have the corporate jet?
@Barney If by jet, you mean the paper planes folded from last month’s financial reports …
@Shrdlu I went to Deals and saw where you were talking about jumbowoot. I knew he was gone, but you also talked about gmwhit. Another “old” Deals person and I were just talking about her not too long ago and were wondering about her because she disappeared so suddenly.
What happened? (I miss her dearly.)
@Barney She and I corresponded via email. She was a trifle older even than I (and I’m nearing 70). She’s been gone since near the end of 2014. I really miss her. We had a lot in common, and even chatted on the phone now and then. It was a real shock when I gave her a call, and the phone had been disconnected. I’m still sad. She was just old (although not THAT old, dammit).
As my mother always said, the hard part about getting older is that you lose those you love. So it goes.
@Shrdlu She and I corresponded by PM’s. We loved to talk about the books we were reading on our Kindle Keyboards. And then one day, there was no answer…
Today has been a bad day in so many ways.
@Barney I remember that name, but didn’t know her. Sorry for the bad news.
@pitamuffin Thanks. I guess that’s the problem with internet friends. They can just disappear and there is seldom a way to find out what happened to them.
@jsimsace Please read this conversation.
@Barney Thanks for the heads-up. My last email contact with her was 5/29/14. She said her health wasn’t good and left it at that. I miss her also.
@jsimsace Hi how you been?
@baqui63 Hey pal, everything is cool here…well, not really cool considering the temps and humidity, but otherwise OK. How about you and yours?
@jsimsace Pretty good… similar issues with heat and humidity, tho perhaps not quite as much (tho last week was the hottest NYC had been for so long for over 15 years or some such.
Daughter units are doing well and life is looking up(ish)… at least not all down for a while now.
@adq Would you like to share any favorite memories of deals.woot?
@dashcloud nah
I notice the Deals.woot rep star is black no matter what your rep now.
@PocketBrain My first black triangle…
@PocketBrain No, that’s not true. Look at some of the recent fresh questions and you will see white and other colors.
@cengland0 @Pocketbrain is talking about the triangles on Woot.com.
@Barney Right. Where do you think I snapped that image from? I got it from Woot dot com
@Barney Oh I see now. In the community on the regular non deals sites, everyone has a black triangle.
@cengland0 yeah, i should have been more specific.
Saving my rep score. Final score was not in the top 15 but I was only doing an experiment. I didn’t post any deals or vote for them. All I did was answer some questions for newbies and I still maintained a black triangle to the very end.
@cengland0
You got me beat. Earlier today was at 37.
@cengland0 I am number 20 currently. I am so surprised considering I am never there. Like that I finished so high though
@conandlibrarian
@cengland0
Perhaps this lobster obsession is being used by a few sick souls in a nefarious attempt to game the system and own #1 on the leaderboard.
Perhaps…perhaps it’s not about lobsters, it’s about LOBSTERGATE!!!
Stop The Conspiracy!
Go @magic_cave!
Go @hobbitss
Go @panthiest!
No, wait, Conspiracies Good!
Go “fucking” @carl669!
Go “LIIIIIIIIIICH!” @lichme!
Anyone of low character/reputation and evil intent; anyone possessing no sanity or maturity, make your break! GO!
@f00l I spelled it right over here I have no idea how I was number 3- besides the shutdown thread, I haven’t even visited there at all in ~6 months. Before that I was barely doing anything.
@Pantheist
I was at 37, then at 40. Then i posted some comments on the @ohcheri listings. That bumped me up to #5. Ouch.
@f00l been there, done that. I no longer possess the will for that
@f00l haha- guess you don’t have to be very active anymore. Remember when some people were actually competitive about it?
@Pantheist
Yeah. I miss @hobbit. And @prettywootprincess. And @catbertthegreat. And plenty of others who wandered away.
@cengland0 #30 here
@f00l Well, I still have Hobbit’s email, but haven’t exchanged email in a couple of years. PWP went on to a different job, as did TheFenst (one of my favorite human beings). Catbert had his account closed (he asked for it to be), and although he had a zillion other accounts (or at least two or three), I’m not so sure that he’s been around in a few years. I should probably email him, just to let him know, if nothing else.
@Shrdlu
I wouldn’t want anyone dragged back who did not wish to be disturbed…but, if you felt ok about emailing them, i guess it would be nice if they had the choice.
@f00l I miss @barrywilliams and @davidhasslehoff
@conandlibrarian OH!! and who was that crazy guy that loved to piss everyone off? I cant remember his name, but thought he was hilarious.
@conandlibrarian You’re not talking about @iggz are you? He’s already been invoked, but hasn’t shown up. Too bad, he used to really crack me up.
@f00l I almost forgot to tell you that I’d sent those emails to Catbert and Hobbit, just now.
@Shrdlu YES!!! I loved every single time @iggz came around.
@Pantheist
OMG i just spent 10 hours at family gathering (wonderful - my fav relative’s 80th birthday), got back, tried to restore myself to pre-margueritas sobriety, and checked Deals.
Fuck, i’m #1 on the leaderboard. All i did, apart from audiobook posts - that i can remember - was to do a standard routine response - “Mom? Again?” - to @ohcheri’s Saturday farewell sexy stuff post.
At 9am today i was #37 or so. At about 11am i was down to #40.
Maybe the leaderboard gives extra status to people (like me) who endlessly repeat stupid joke responses because they think the joke is still kinda funny.
Now i am the id10t.
@f00l Yepper, you are indeed number one. If you did a lot of voting, that helped. Then you keep posting those deals, and that helped even more. I’ve actually dropped a bit, since there’s been so much other activity. After tomorrow, it isn’t going to matter much. So it goes.
@f00l I was summoned by @shrdlu, to see the last day of the site. I still miss all of you when I think of the good times I had with a bunch of internet strangers. Though at the end, you all didn’t feel like strangers.
To finish off this post my other one: https://meh.com/forum/topics/deals-dot-woot-is-shutting-down-go-say-goodbye-or-not#579d9c299a07d7e80b7f0b30
@f00l Awesome. I know I voted for your mom in ocheri’s garb
@conandlibrarian I popped up from the 100s to 19 this morning all from a few comments & a few up votes sprinkled here & there. That algorithm is done broke HARD.
@cengland0 I’m up to #6??? Because of Lobsters Uniting?? Damn!
http://deals.woot.com/leaderboard
@LaVikinga great! I’ve been seeing you around over there.
@ghostofcatbert
Hail Catbert The Friendly Ghost!
@f00l
@shrdlu The old fun will be missed. We did have it there. Crazy ass deals. I loved pushing the limits.
@shrdlu I think this was my favorite deal I posted. I remember staff did not want to put it on popular until they had to.
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/dec17b6f-0b8f-496f-8dc2-4d788823c0ad/cui-cui-island-chile-south-america-for#31
Remember when we had this amount of votes? crazy.
@mfladd Just pointing out that staff has absolutely no control on whether or not something hits popular. The algorithms can be gamed, and it’s not all that complicated, if you have plenty of help (the storefront spammers have it down to a science). It took a while to go popular because, even though it had plenty of votes, it needed more clickthroughs (note the disparity between recently clicked and recently viewed) and your ratio on the island was sadly lacking for those.
I could go into it in far more depth, but all that math that Shawn put into things is about to pass into memory, and there it’ll stay.
Who knows? Maybe @ohcheri and @mtm2 will both end up over here. I saw both of them considering it in the RIP post.
@Shrdlu Don’t bring me down. I loved the island I do hope some people do find there way here, especially the ones you mentioned. Some others - not so much.
p.s. I hate math.
p.s.s. I just looked hard to believe that post was from 6 years ago.
@Shrdlu also love the top comment from that deal.
“what’s the catch?? Is it inhabited by dinosaurs? Strange buttons that must be pushed? School children stranded from a plane crash??”
I need to stop being so nostalgic.
@shrdlu Sorry I brought a war down below to your thread. Shit happens. #sorry.
RIP breakfast octopus
/captionbot
@zippyus
Something that cute, and Amazon just had to eat it for breakfast.
@zippyus Captionbot is broken; too many giraffes or something. So here’s a substitute:
I think it looks like a goat.
@zippyus this only seems like a term for all of Woot, not the corner of it they are shuttering.
@snapster i was going to say “RIP breakfast octopus tentacle” but then i’d have to do an image search on “tentacle”
@zippyus laziness is acceptable
I have heard from a few who thought all of Woot was shutting down (or at least were confused)
@snapster Confused is probably more like it. The woot “brand” is perceived as one, even though it’s multiple subsites.
It’s akin to folks who think all VWs are cheating pollution whores when it’s just a subset of the diesels that are.
@snapster
Re Breakfast Octopus:
Deals.Woot might be the only part of Woot that’s about dead, but the rest of Woot seem to me certainly contained in Amazon’s digestive tract.
Exhibit A: @narfcake’s chart above.
Exhibit B: Lack of chatter in all of Woot
I suppose when Mr Bezos said he didn’t understand Woot, he was purely accurate. I wish he had chosen the wisdom of leaving it alone, but too late now.
@f00l Exhibit 1A (not shown): Ad rates/revenues are waaaaaaaay down.
I was talking business to a friend a couple years back, and he mentioned buying ad space before. For what he spent for limited ad placement then, he could blanket woot all day and still have change left over.
And it still wasn’t a good value for the lack of traffic.
I’m a little sad to see it go. It was a fun community once, and you’d find the occasional great deal. With the loss of jumbowoot and anything else to keep it fun, Woot f’d it all up.
@mistamoose Jeez, I’ve got 25 pages of deals that I had posted on that thing over the years. This one looks like the Princess Bride was the highest one I ever got with 137 votes:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/c0b61168-0979-4492-a173-750a4091c1dc/princess-bride-25th-anniversary-edition-blu-ray#19
@mistamoose I didn’t look thru everything, but I had one with 181 votes.
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/9307cb08-96b1-4ce8-a86d-9b3601101935/star-trek-two-disc-edition-2009#22
@mistamoose Best I got was a 85 for a 2TB hard drive. It was 4 years ago and the deal’s still active, haha.
My favorite was a nod to Jumbowoot leaving, with this post:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/0f6fdc9c-e145-4829-bace-19a7941cf3f3/goodbye-jumbo-world-party-mp3-downloads#3
@ACraigL Jumbowoot rocked. p.s. I was still able to give you a vote
@ACraigL Ha! I even commented on that post back then. Wow.
@mistamoose - I had just 4 pages of deals - my highest upvote count was 85 for Original Star Wars Blueprints Collection - from Lucasfilm Archives for $349.95.
Looks like I divorced woot 4 years ago, then met and married meh a couple of years later.
Bygones.
For anyone who remembers ohcheri, she’s having an End of Deals Woot sale (20% off with code EndOfDeals).
I never posted on Deals.Woot, but I was a regular reader of it for years, and watched a lot of drama go down there.
@dashcloud omg that delights me
a boo hoo hooo…boo hoo hooo…
once again, some of us assholes are still in #deals.woot on IRC.
@meh Don’t hate on us for knowing when to walk away. We just wanted to say goodbye for what it once was - not what it is now.
@mfladd you took this entirely oversensitively. i wrote a nice response in the deals.woot thread. i have many friends that i came to know because of that community. get your panties out of your butthole, friend.
@meh Seriously? uuum… I did not take it over-sensitively. I took it as you wrote it (boo-hoo). My panties are not in a wad. But I might use them as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
@mfladd take my previous comment, and paste it in response to this one, too. tho i do have to ask, if you took it ‘as i wrote it’ then how did you translate it to ‘hate on us’?
@meh and you can have my response again. Not in the mood today. Let it be.
@mfladd lol what in the?? ‘i’m not in the mood for getting @replies on this comment i made’. ok, guy. take it down a notch, eh? i think i made clear i didn’t ‘hate on’ anyone with my comment. it was just a little tongue in cheek, nothing to get excited about.
@meh nobody insults my woot u lil punk, tell me where u r I’ll sock u 1 right in the gabba
@PoopFeast420 dont u come a near me you little pooface ill knock u one right in the teeth
@PoopFeast420
Funny you come in now.
@mfladd mate, 33% of my posts have been responded to by staff though. My dad also owns Google so maybe you should be a little careful with what you say LOL.
@mfladd @poopfeast420 such sass, so anger
@PoopFeast420 I’m sorry. I forgot to be impressed. Oh wait, I also forgot the LOL.
I forgot how much time I used to spend over there. I looked back through the 16 pages of posted deals. First deal was posted on 11/25/2009.
@shrdlu summoned me from the beyond. Not sure what she sacrificed to make that happened, probably a blue lobster.
It was a wild ride in those early days. The community that was built there was one of a kind. Those were the best times. I miss answering those questions every now and then.
Goodbye Deals.Woot.
@ghostofcatbert I am so happy to see this!
@LaVikinga “The Viking Lady” ;P You’re here too!
@ghostofcatbert Absolutely! I was bopping around Deals and saw a “ghost.” Was so hoping it was you that I even left a message on one of your deals. Mentioned to @shrdlu how I am always reminded of you whenever I get to see a southern launch arcing across the skies at home. Sometimes when the skies are clear we get to see them even way up the coast of Florida.
Hope you’re doing well & life is all skyrockets and good things for you these days.
Hope you’ll make it a point to pop in now & then. Although, I still can’t figure out all the pulleys and knobs to this place, so running across people is still hit & miss for me.
If only they had a circuit breaker! That would have fixed everything…;)
I hope I captured the timeline correctly …
Do you like pie?
@f00l – Hi from @Barney!
@f00l @LaVikinga I emailed @magic_cave on July 20 and she briefly answered me July 25 and said that she would send me a more detailed email the next day – “promise”.
She hasn’t. I worry.
@Barney If I was a better organized person and kept all my old emails, I would play stalker for you. She and I live on the same side of the city. I do hope everything is just busy, busy, busy for them and nothing serious has happened.
@LaVikinga That’s what I’m hoping – that they are busy.
Well, crap! This put a hitch in my getalong. TT (aka @del) just announced that they’re postponing the shutdown until noon on Monday.
http://deals.woot.com/questions/comment/8c99d98e-7b0b-433a-bd59-c75531819c33
Now they’re just toying with us.
@Shrdlu Was just about to post this. Wouldn’t be the first time that one thing was said, and yet something else different occurred.
@LaVikinga Sure. In this case, I think they may be having issues with separating everything out. Lucky for them that the code bases are different, and that they didn’t move everything to the same database in the cloud… Oh, wait, they did move it all to the cloud. Oops.
I think the “upgrade” that was transitory that we saw may have been a first pass at separating things.
@Shrdlu I’m not rewriting my song parody for the new time.
I’m really sorry it’s gone. I didn’t buy a whole lot on Deals but I sure got a lot of answers to questions that I had. It was my go-to place. Really helpful people. I like the way it was set up.
You know, if @snapster could align the stars just so, we could almost have a continuing thread giving us a heads up on rock bottom, solid deals we find now and then. Heck, we do it now when we find attachments to previous meh deals. Yes, I realize that is all kinds of a conflict of business, but…perhaps?
Just did a quick search… 606 lobster deals added since Friday. A pretty good send-off I think. And it looks like we’ll have to the end of Monday as well.
@ACraigL Until Monday at noon, Texas Time, unless things have changed in the last few minutes…
Nope, just checked. Noon, CDT.
@Shrdlu So, are you going to be like me–sitting in front of the computer and hitting refresh at 1201 CDT, just to see what happens?
8 mins in and no change- is there something I’m missing?
@Pantheist .Now they’re saying noon PST.
/giphy Quit playing games with my heart!
Damn it deals.woot.
@studerc They even screwed up pulling the plug.
They’ve done a lot over the years to show they didn’t care about that site. Now they shown that they don’t even care enough to turn it off when they said they would. It’s pretty laughable.
@capguncowboy You’re nicer on Deals.Woot.
@Del I’m a delight all of the time. No one told you?
Seriously though, the way the deals.woot community was ignored drove me away from Woot altogether (well, that and they didn’t seem to have anything I was remotely interested in priced at a point where I was convinced it was worth the effort of buying). I voted with my wallet. Sometimes that’s all we can do. I just hate that the only real victim at Woot was the site most of so dearly loved.
I have some very fond memories from the community there, and even from some of the staff. Most of those guys have made it over here now. I know there were a few lost in the wrinkles of time, but I hope they’ll find their way here in due time.
I hold no grudges against you or any of the staff. It’s not their fault for the things that happened. You weren’t given the tools to properly do the job, and that sucks.
/giphy head nod
@capguncowboy I dunno, I don’t think we can say the staff is blameless. The big, sweeping dumb business decisions like offering way too many items is the fault of the suits, but the out-of-control moderation is the fault of the staff. Both are big factors in killing off the community.
For example, just in the past few minutes some woot mod neutered your question so it now just reads “What in the F?”. I don’t think we can blame Darth Vader for that.
@Starblind Garth Mader hasn’t been the CEO of Woot for years now.
Directly from @del (no sense posting a link to it), for the why on the delays.
The first delay was so we wouldn’t be deploying a bunch of code right when the servers are trying to roll out new offers at midnight CT.
This second one is because people don’t remember to add PT to their times.
I was secretly hoping for a black triangle bag of crap to show up there at the end…a last parting gift, alas…it ain’t gonna happen.
@studerc at least you got a great question in.
@Ignorant ive sworn SO MUCH over there. A gift in itself. Ahhhh the little things…little fucking things.
I posted a final poem or two. Something tells me the limerick appreciation quotient is lower there than here, so we’ll see if the crazy mods delete them:
http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/d7f9e36b-7b48-4eb3-809f-b2d255251a25/a-farewell-good-by-poesy-with-which-to-dry-thy-tears#3
@Starblind - They’re poignant yet stinging. Perfect.
@Starblind
I never saw the thread. Can you re-post over here?
@f00l Your wish is my command. The limericks were:
A company far from Nantucket
Saw decline, and hoped they could buck it,
But their site, so they say,
Drove its users away!
So into the bin they did chuck it.
…and…
A site once so noted for deals
Shut its doors, giving users the feels
But despite all their tears
It was quite dead for years
O, how quickly a lost dream congeals!
@Starblind
Love limericks. Clean ones, filthy ones, whatever. Didnt Prairie Home Companion used to do an annual limerick show?
Omg. It’s still there…it’s like glitter. Once it’s there…it’s never going away…
@studerc @lichme, is that true?
@ACraigL Ha, I moved, I don’t have to deal with it anymore!
@capguncowboy just posted a dong of a deal:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/9a6ef484-04bf-4a80-b334-4fbc575bc7b3/go-fuck-yourself-tool-kit-enjoy-the-ride#0
@ACraigL @capguncowboy Maybe a tad toward the harsh
/giphy you go girl
@ACraigL @capguncowboy…i thought it was hilarious. People just can’t handle sometimes…
@compunaut @AcraigL
I’m just trying to get to the top before they shut it down next year… or whenever
@capguncowboy i need more tattles…put up more offensive shit!
@studerc your wish is my command
@ACraigL AND… they killed it – I bet Bezos is hoarding them all to himself. Didn’t want anyone else swinging in and buying up his stock.
Need to change the topic to:
Deals dot Woot is shutting down; (or not)
@Ignorant Haha, I actually thought it said that at first.
Congrats to @narfcake for being the #1 questioner. Nice to go out on top.
And. I’m done. Serious. Fucking mods ruin everything.
@studerc You expected something else?
@studerc Sad but true. Fitting epitaph for the whole site, really.
@studerc I’m never done. Relentless is an adjective often used to describe me.
Someone posted the book “Go the Fuck to Sleep”. How perfect is that?
and… gone.
and… it’s gone
@slydon Was I the last the post!? And please tell me it still said “Go fuck yourself”!
EDIT: I harbor no ill feelings towards you or TT (@del). Good luck to you both.
@capguncowboy It was the last one I saw.
@capguncowboy as far as I know you were not the last post. Suffer.
loop only got to run about 6 times
@Pantheist Was that the “99 bottles of lube on the wall” one? That was awesome.
@Starblind yup, and thanks
RIP
(sigh) …
last!
@carl669 Uh, maybe here, but on the deals.woot RIP thread (the one with 9 pages), @f00l was the winner.
@Barney yeah. the “london calling” post i think. i got tied up answering a client question. oh well… next time.
@carl669
I got last post? Wow!
And the London Calling ref works poetically as last post, too.
…
So, fucking @carl669, since i got last post, it’s your turn to up the Fun Fact count. Get to wok.
Funny how they seemed to wait for @shrdlu to step away from her computer before they drifted off into the ether.
@LaVikinga It was hard to calculate, I don’t think it ever happened before…
@LaVikinga Yep, I saw that and giggled. We waited all day and all we really needed to do was to ask her to leave the room.
@LaVikinga It’s just as well. It was beginning to be almost intolerable, and watching it all devolve, with downvoting, and people wanting to post things that they had to expect would get deleted.
BTW, please do not blame staff for those deletions. You’re welcome to blame Darth (is he still there? unreal), but remember, those other people were just struggling to do their job. Considering how few people were actually on the Deals staff at the end (perhaps four, or five, at most), with occasional help from the others on the main site (notably @del), it was a tough day all around.
Please, please, please, @snapster, PLEASE never enable down voting here.
BTW, for anyone who was curious, I felt not even a twinge. It was time.
I wish they left the tombstone picture redirect active for longer. Somehow I thought I would be able to see it again rather then just the once when it surprised me at reload.
@Raider I never saw a tombstone. Just a blank page – then finally, the 404 not found message
@capguncowboy there was a RIP tombstone with an option to go to the woot homepage or the RIP thread on the woot community. it was only up for less than a minute i think.
@capguncowboy There was a small tombstone with a message RIP deals.woot and years…after a few seconds it forwarded to the main page.
@Raider
You know, they might have simply washed their hands on the deals side and turned off posting there, and kept ATC, renamed the url to something other than “Deals”, and kept the archive going and the community happy, and many people might have gotten such warm feelings toward the rest of woot they might have started buying stuff again.
But no.
@f00l Honestly I think that is the area they would want rid of the fastest. First business wise the community was dead and the activity was nonexistent. While that may have been an option years ago there was nothing left to keep going with in the future. The active users by and large left and all that was left was a shell of its former self.
Now community wise, back when it was active, that is where most of the aggression towards the staff occurred. Sometimes it was a rallying point when an employee would attack a member in a little seen thread, while other times it was where employees would put their foot in their mouths. The forums are dispersed enough at woot that it was hard to get a rally going, in ATC however people came running with torches and pitchforks. They became a victim of their own success in that regard over there. I could relive some of the moments I remember most clearly but there is no reason to rehash the past now. Employees somehow dropped their guards a bit and became more casual and at times there was blow back from it. ATC was both their biggest community success but also lead to their biggest failure. It was something very interesting to have been a part of and, business wise reflecting back, something I personally can take away lots of lessons and experience from. It was fun to be a part of but sadly had run its course.
@Raider
I remember a certain % - a smallish minority - of the forum users offered the usual pigheaded internet arrogance and paranioa and baiting. And most active people in the forums didnt even bother to respond to that stuff. No mod needed. Mods didnt respond to it that much either, if memory serves, and had no reason to - the usual trolls, prob contained.
But some staff kept making layout changes that really impacted usability, sought no feedback before or after, and were arrogant and offensive when members pointed out that format changes had really hurt usability. And i specifically remember when some staff, who seemed to possess less social maturity than i would expect in a pack of resentful 13 years olds (apologies to 13 year olds, you dont merit the comparison) acted so badly toward customers that i’m shocked they were not fired or suspended on the spot.
I have never worked for or with a business that would have tolerated the staff behavior i recall, and neither have any of my family or friends, a number of which operate sucessful businesses. These particular staff members in at least one instance seemed to operate in an unsupervised vacuum, and they were simply unqualified and very unsuitable at that time for that role. They needed an adult in the room. I dont blame anyone now, or want to dredge all that up…users got over it or moved on, and as for those employees, i’m sure they’ve developed more social skills and more complex lives, as well.
I know the deals people were often somewhat contentious. But nothing even measurable compared to to what i’ve seen on reddit (an extreme case), slickdeals (a comparable case), or, say, slashdot, which used to try to maintain some civility. We (users) just werent that bad. And most staff were great… and the few “problem” staff mostly werent that bad either, except now and then; aside from a few people who had a serious “we’re better than you” attitude. The amazon thing didnt help (imho). That seemed to really fragment who knew what was going on and who was responsible for what. And then after the “founders’ breakaway”, the new upstairs people literally did not care about deals at all, and it showed.
I have no special knowledge; was never really all that “in”, not even recently, dont know any staff, dont know f2f any members, never did an exchange. I never could have been called an insider, in any sense. And i came and went, depending on life and all that. All this is just how it looked to me, given what little i saw.
None of this matters now…i just thought i’d try to make a case that contentious users didnt kill deals; deals was amazing in the beginning (Dec 2009 for me i think), was great for years, was pretty damned good even two years back, long after the big staff/community “blowup event”…it could have survived all of that if ppl and managers with the right mix of tech and social skills had cared about it for the last several years. I had the feeling it was that task nobody wanted, that came with no rewards.
To me, spam killed deals. People just found it too depressing to go there. Everything was junk. If you posted a decent deal it got buried. If you came to shop, almost total waste. And it was neglected, and felt that way. And some really great people left because of life, and all those “reality” reasons, and if they later came back to look around, the spam was so bad, why stay for 10 min? Plus i guess Woot didnt make any $ from it.
Slickdeals allows members to post deals, and yet the amazon/ebay/newegg garbage is rarely even visible. I’m sure the sellers try the same tricks there. I wouldnt mind knowing how slickdeals contains it.
I remember when i found the deals forums, i couldnt believe i had stumbled across such an incredible group, containing so few assholes. Like, smart, funny, caring, informative, helpful, literate grownups? On the internet? Who knew that was even possible?
Oh well. Long weekend, long day. Maybe i’ll go see if anyone is selling headphones or anything.
@f00l I fully agree about the incredible group of members they somehow assembled. It was something truly special to be apart of and thankfully valued it at the time. It is what made the flameout all the much more disappointing. As I really do not use the other sites mentioned its hard for me to judge them. All I can say is none of them grabbed me at all and deals hooked me right off the bat. A large part of it was helping form a community and having it grow as users wanted. Its something the original ownership excelled in, and amazon lost sight of.
I left deals more or less during the staff blowup event. First I was disappointed by deals suddenly becoming hyper moderated and making it impossible to find deals I enjoyed. It went from a fun loving community with a mix of sales and odd ball stuff (some free, some just nonstandard items) to only seeing certain retailers. I know it was orders from the top trying to generate a profit only pushing deals that would generate referral profits but it backfired. Rather then taking what profits they would get from all the deals, they infuriated the masses causing deal posts to drop dramatically. While the staff could have communicated why better, their hands were tied and nothing could be done if they liked it or not. It was an unfortunate business decision which was executed equally poorly. It went from an easy going community that solved its own problems to seemingly having untrained baby sitters that seemed to cause more problems then solve.
The immature staff on the other hand did get out of hand. I was squarely in the middle of 2 of the bigger ones. The first one a mod made horrible comments to a member in the forum who in turn came to ATC for help. I still feel the employee should have been fired on the spot, and if same happened “in real life” police could have gotten involved as it was a threat to their personal safety. When that was somehow settling a moronic, unrelated staffer from a different department threw gas on the fire in the thread; I called for their termination…going as far as @ pinging the long gone snapster…in disbelief as how far things had fallen.
Shortly after that was a promo event that they blew horribly resulting in another horrible PR event. I was informed by a few employees, who will forever remain anonymous publicly (acouple surprising they would inform me), that somehow the staffer who handled the PR was blaming me directly for the train wrecked event, which I had nothing to do with. Hearing what that employee was doing was the final straw. I really stopped with anything woot besides when someone linked me to something, or if it became a main point in the chat communities I frequented at the time.
By the time the spammers had taken over I had already become disengaged. Where earlier in the voting system the active community would just downvote spammers to oblivion, what users remained were out numbered. Making referral links have so much weight just invited self serving storefronts simultaneously devaluing what type of community had been fostered. Its amazing how right the community was at the time, and how poorly it worked out for the powers that be who forced the changes.
Who woulda thought moderating tags would have been the domino that started the decisions that lead to its death?! Going to war with your consumers is never good for a business. Generally users will dislike change, but insulting, belittling and ignoring their wants destroys it for everyone. Users end up leaving somewhere they enjoy, and businesses end up suffering from decreased business. The smugness of amazon “1 customer leaves, 2 replace them” proved to be highly untrue for woot…and yes that is a direct quote from an employee when I discussed with them the repercussions of going to war with your core customers.
@Raider
Interesting. Now i wish meh had pm’s so that i could hear more detail.
You obviously were much further into it all than i. I rarely even made a chance remark to a staffer in a forum, let alone created a conversation.
And i came and went…life stuff.
Slickdeals is an awesome deals site, but it’s not a community in the sense of bonding, caring, sharing good times and bad. The slickdeals community in concerned almost entirely with info: good deal or no, how to, where to find, is there something better, are you insane for wanting one, will it do what you think it will do, what did it cost last BF? Most posts are strictly seeking/offering info, no one makes friends with who ever is talking. Like a trading floor.
Some people must have made friends there, but it’s tough to imagine. Great deal info tho.
@f00l There were acouple of employees I would occasionally have some casual conversation. It was nothing dramatic or really note worthy a generally it was not woot related. In the second incident I had my one and only contact with acouple of employees. If it was “glamorized” it was unintentional. I was most heavily involved for acouple of month period that just coincided with the shift in business method. I started as a casual user and then became dissociated when it was clear to me I cared too much about just a website.
Also no one should take it that I am still somehow bitter about the past or holding onto long held resentment. Going thru this felt more like doing a business case study in college, but this time it was from memory rather then info from a piece of paper. It was just interesting to have lived thru some of the decisions and being able to see how they played out. The thought was only possible because of the type of community they fostered and how anyone was able to feel like they were part of it. Something incredibly unique for any type of business let alone a website which already had a large user base at its creation.
Sorry for the breaks, how it was constructed. I do not have any photo editing software on my machine to merge into one.
@Raider they got the date wrong. I guess they had to fuck it up one last time, for old times sake?
@Raider thanks for posting- i didn’t see it
@Raider Do you or anyone else still have the images in their browser cache? It’s already been pulled down from AWS.
@narfcake
@narfcake
@capguncowboy Thanks. Here’s it all combined now, although Irfanview didn’t seem to like the BG …
@narfcake, @capguncowboy Thank you for nabbing shots of these.
@LaVikinga No problem. I’m happy to help!
@conandlibrarian glad to see you made it back for the end, even if it was just a final disappointment.
hmm there is now an empty spot on woot
@communist They’ll soon fill it with 15 more deal sites/categories, in which they’ll dump more shit no one wants
Bookends
@f00l I love you for this. Thank you.
It’s a shame that the one from the album isn’t around, though. It’s the only one with the old people talking in the background…
@Shrdlu
One of my favs since the first time i heard it. Practically wore the vinyl off.
@Shrdlu
Old Friends
@f00l Evocative. Lovely. Still not it. I may have to figure out how to get those voices from my CD. Those quavery old voices, saying things like:
“Children, and Mothers, that’s the way we have it”
“I have to be an old man. That’s just the way it is.” (I might be remembering that one wrong)
“I still do it. I still sleep on my side of the bed.”
I dunno.
@Shrdlu
Since i have done most of my posting today at red lights or while waiting in line or waiting on someone (or making someone wait on me) i didnt always go thru youtube looking for the “right” one, just made sure it wasn’t kareoke.
But now that you remind me, that doesn’t seem to be the original that i have in memory. The first release is prob on youtube somewhere. I’ll have to play the album to remind myself what i’m looking for.
@f00l Lump. Throat.
@Shrdlu I’m surprised it’s not more easily accessible on the internet. I found the track that was just old people talking from before it…
@Shrdlu full album, starting at old friends can’t embed and have it start at the right place
@Pantheist Thank you for finding this. I know, I know, I’m weird, but I’ve always loved it. I imagine it’s not easy to find out there because it isn’t music, and those old voices probably don’t appeal to many.
XXOO
@Shrdlu Happy to help. Simon and Garfunkle are great.
@Pantheist
Wow. Thanks. Now i will have to play the whole album thru today.
@shrdlu
@lavikinga
David Axelrod has a podcast, and last week one episode was an hour plus interview with Paul Simon. I had no idea…one of Paul Simon’s schoolmate-friends grew up to work in Civil Rights, and went south, and was one of the three people murdered in the Mississippi Burning incident.
Simon said it had a huge impact on him. Wow, i can imagine.
@f00l enjoy
@Pantheist
Oh, my grace,
I’ve got no hiding place…
Thx.
@f00l @shrdlu @lavikinga
I’m not sure why, but it makes me think of this
London Calling
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Calling_(disambiguation)
Wikipedia mentions the BBC WWII usage only in passing on the disambiguation page; but to me, that’s always been the primary meaning of the phrase…perhaps because so many in my family were in WWII, and many of them went thru London. The phrase “London Calling” was not only a BBC timestamp catchphrase, it was, symbolically, during the era of the Blitz and U2 rockets, a beacon that London was still there and still reaching out.
Not a diss on The Clash at all, as I saw them in concert perhaps 10 times? and was at the concert at the Palladium in NYC where the famous album cover photograph was taken. And bought the album the day it dropped, and wore the vinyl off it too, and still stream it.
For today i’ll take any and all interpretations.
@f00l This also is a classic!
@f00l
I found a good London Calling ident from the 30’s, but only as part of a string of idents. Nothing 40’s so far.
The BBC World Service started i think in the 1930’s as a news source for the enormous empire, with scattered short wave relays. It was a success, they built up to include surprisingly close to “everywhere” and many languages, and because in many areas somebody somewhere had a shortwave receiver, the BBC became the place huge swaths of humanity got their only fairly reliable news.
Then came the war. And in much of the populated world where war came home, many people who knew someone with a shortwave and thus could hear news from London, even on some remote island in the Pacific or Indian ocean. And the news was largely considered fairly trustworthy, which meant that the Allied forces found fairly friendly locals in many unexpected places, and that people all over various war zones heard news that first London, then the Allies, put out…and more to the point, in some remote nowhere, people knew something fairly accurate about the progress of war.
I would imagine this was a huge factor in morale on both sides. For Axis nations, I imagine knowing that people, including troops, in most war zones, coul hear “London Calling” once an hour if it became safe to listen was quite irritating.
…
Of course, The Clash turned the phrase around to radiate alternative meanings, which is one of the things rock is for.
…
So…
London Calling

@mfladd
Love that. What year was it? 1973? 1974? That you heard it at least 5 times a day for months on end?
@f00l 1972. Video was posted on you tube in 2008. It be a classic!
@mfladd Lord, look at that baby face. I loved that song (the original, without any electronics). Sigh. I’m really, really old tonight. I think I’m a little broken, too.
@Shrdlu I know the feeling. So Say We All.
@mfladd
@shrdlu
This song isn’t relevant, but i’m in the mood. Wtf.
Ever roll any dice?
Put up another one first, but the sound was awful. This is just a sketchy 70’s live recording, not that bad for that era. Also this isn’t a stadium show with stadium sound, be warned, it sounds clubby. I still like it.
Didnt see this show. Did catch the tour. Twice i think? The Garden and someplace else. Boston? Forget.
@mfladd
OMG in that second American Pie video McLean looks mebbe 20 and his audience looks like they just left elementary school. Ouch.
Whenever i see a long form vid like that, with the stoney-faced adults, i am reminded of a friend i had in high school, a few years older than I.
He won every award and scholarship. Think he wound up at Cornell? Anyway, this is about 1970, and he was such an academic star, the - get this - the DAR invited him to speak.
Now i have nothing against the DAR, i could join and all, and i’m sure they do good things. But this was 1970 and all they knew about some HS kid was that he was an academic star. They invited him to speak knowing nothing else.
Ok. Their risk.
He showed up in jeans with with his guitar. His “speech” was some Dylan stuff, followed by the long version of “Alice’s Restaurant”. And, in so far as he could while playing a guitar, he kinda acted out the songs with facial expressions and gestures.
Afterwards, i asked him how it went. He said they clapped politely, asked him nice grandmother questions, fed him cucumber sandwiches and punch, and were incredibly sweet, polite, and disapproving. Later we heard that 2 DAR members had forbidden their granddaughters to date him (these girls had never met him, had no clue who he was, went to other schools). One DAR person very sweetly called the principal and asked if he were a communist (a nice communist, but still). The principal said, no, he wasnt a communist, you know these kids, they act a bit weird but they will grow up to be dedicated Americans.
And he did - grow up to be a dedicated American and also a research biologist. And i guess the DAR also was just fine long term, but the next year they didn’t invite some star student to give a speech at their luncheon.
@Shrdlu Don’t be that broken. I would miss you. Just say’n.
I’m still getting the tombstone redirect from deals.woot.com - though any direct url to a discussion is getting the 403.
I still had this page in my browser from about an hour before it shut down. Lots of friends in there, huh?
@ACraigL See that space there in the percentages that seems missing? Right at 99.88%? That’s Faughtey. She was trying to post deals, and at the same time, not reach 100% (because that’d be weird, since staff didn’t show in the regular Reputations field). I should have saved a screen shot of the last Q Reputations, where it showed the top 30 (and where her name would have shown up).
@Shrdlu
Perhaps still in the cache?
@ACraigL The dozens of Lobster things I posted put me on the list… I really only posted a few tool sales before this. I will miss that damn site though…
@ACraigL This makes me happy seeing all our friends. Thanks.
Anyone got pdf’s of the deals RIP thread that are good?
I saved a bunch on my phone, but it will be the weekend before I can sort them out and see if they saved properly.
If they did, I prob also have a copy of @narfcake’s pie thread. And perhaps the “first member of deals” thread.
But some of you folks on pc’s and Mac’s outta have these, surely easier to deal w on a non handheld device.
@f00l Alas, no threads here. I’m not even sure if I have my song parody, as it’s not showing up in my phone’s memory and Office didn’t synchronize properly.
(I wrote it while having breakfast at Ikea on Sunday morning.)
The responses were better than my verse.
@narfcake
Ikea does breakfast? They are opening one near enuf to me that I will actually go there soonish.
I got the pie thread PDF. I will have to move it to Google drive in order to upload it. Or something. Laterz on that.
@f00l Yep - served cafeteria style, not gourmet by any means, but the coffee is free too (with Ikea Family card). And for me, it’s cheaper than cooking.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/food/#restaurant
@narfcake
OK what is an Ikea family card?
Have never been to an Ikea because the current one is about say 50-60 miles away (that’s nothing) thru kinda constant construction (baaaad).
I’d rather do 200 miles of open road than that drive. Only there hasn’t been another Ikea within 200 miles.
Soon. 12-15 miles, no construction.
@f00l It’s their loyalty card program.
http://info.ikea-usa.com/family/en-us/benefits
Expect the grand opening to be crazy.
@f00l I even got down-votes on the pie thread. That made me happy. Good times
@f00l Grand Prairie, TX. Not until 2017 AFAIK.
I hate driving to Frisco
@compunaut
Can wait. Garage sales and futon furniture long predate Ikea for my furniture needs.
I plan to avoid opening month insanity. If the insanity goes longer than a month, I guess I’ll just join in.
Ditto that Frisco drive. Bomb it.
Calling @magic_cave…saw your post on www.woot, so we know you’re back online somewhere.
@f00l Whew, what a relief. I was a bit concerned, and I’m pretty sure that @LaVikinga was also. Just in case she didn’t already know, I’m pinging her here.
Man, I’m really going to miss that feature of notify if mentioned from Woot. How unfair life is; Woot has PMs (crappy, but it has them), and Meh has notification if mentioned. Life is just too complicated.
@Shrdlu
And you know…to me…the people on www are nice and funny and kind, but it’s not the same. Something’s missing over there…that best ever flavor of being tart and intelligent and just sweet enuf…
No snap? No @snap?
@f00l Thank the gods! Making us worry like a bunch of hens over a missing chick…
Hope all is well & she’ll pop in soon enough.
@LaVikinga
@shrdlu
She showed up early this am in the www.woot.com “world of woot” “rip deals.woot” thread.
An oldy, but goody. I miss that place (the 2009-2010 version) and the stupid leader board that no one understood. I was number one for a long time, but I never did figure out how to be awesome
And since it’s relevant again, here’s something that I created when the Fire was first released. It’s lost in the archives now, so posting here seems fitting
I know I have other screenshots from back in the day, but they’re buried somewhere in my files
I used to try and explain how the leaderboard worked, but I finally gave it up. My favorite leaderboard moment was when @ohcheri made it to number 1. I actually sprayed coffee when I saw it. I have a screen shot of it. I should probably upload some of my favorites to imgur so I could post them here.
@Shrdlu I remember that. After years of posting deals, she started taking part in the ATC side of the site and she shot up through the ranks like a rocket.
What ever happened to her anyway?
@capguncowboy She’s still around. She participated again those last few weeks. Heck, I was the first vote on her post when she returned. Her website is still around, too. I suggested she should show up here, and she said she might. I’m betting against it, but you never know.
You’re over it. You’ve moved on. Dead topic.
Except for @narfcake, who doesn’t have a copy of his poem or his or thread. And anyone else who wants a few Last Day copies of threads.
The PDF was a save from Android Firefox. Not perfect, I think a few lines of text may have been clipped at page breaks. Best I got.
The PDF is hosted on Microsoft’s docs.com, the link provided is the MS docs.com publishing link, not a URL from a “shorten me” service.
I know all of nothing about publishing docs and other media, embedding stuff, whatever. Help?
test
Will it embed? No. Won’t. Ideas? Hate to break it up into pngs per page if I don’t need to.
https://doc.co/EuPv2R
@f00l
Crap, the MS docs.com PDF viewer is crapping, at least on mobile.
Tech people, step forth here pls.
@f00l So, if you want a (probably better) place to put your PDF that offers an embedded view on the site (not here unfortunately), use https://pdf.yt/.
@dashcloud
(All Android)
FWIW, if I try to load the PDF from the MS docs.com link using Firefox beta, the MS PDF viewer throws an error.
Seems to work fine using Dolphin browser in desktop mode.
Also looks good using Chrome Beta mobile.
@f00l Late reply, but I did pull it down earlier, only to have PDFill mutilate it in converting to an image file, so I didn’t repost it.
I still say the replies were much better than my parody.
Also, a huge thanks for preserving the some of the last moments at deals.
@narfcake
I have png’s of your thread. Once I’m done with MS torment, I’ll try uploading the images to imgur and embedding them. Not sure how readable they will be, with the small print.
Does the PDF look OK?
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine site copy was made on July 29, 2016. So it’s missing last day stuff, lobster stuff, and the completed RIP thread. Still, ATC is there if you’re feeling nostalgic. I suppose the “q” threads are invisible.
https://web.archive.org/web/20160729170537/http://deals.woot.com/
Donations to Archive.org come with excellent karma, I’m told.
@f00l the archive feels very creepy. it was too soon to look.
@f00l The one thing I would have liked to see was the RIP thread. It’s too bad, but that’s the way it goes. I suspect I will never visit the archives to read old stuff; just too sad.
I do wish that someone had removed the “Q” tag from the old Q conversations (so that they could be archived), but I suppose it’s just as well.
@snapster, I don’t feel the need to be reminded that it was fun, and now it’s gone. I’ll just have to force myself to have fun here instead. Please help me celebrate by sending Raider more broken televisions. Clearly they made him happy. Me too.
@snapster If you do send me another pallet please enclose a gas card so I can personally deliver @Shrdlu one of the sets myself! What’s a 6,000 mile round trip to pull off a joke between friends?!
@snapster
@shrdlu
@narfcake
I have all 9 pages of the RIP thread all the way to “London Calling”. If there was a post after than, i spoze it’s gone gone gone.
Wanna put the thread up. Thought I’d practice w @narfcake’s thread 1st and get something or other to work then do it.
About to load @narfcake’s thread onto that service mentioned above, and link from here. Maybe I’ll also put it up as png’s on imgur and see how that looks embedded.
@snapster
Don’t wanna look thru the Wayback Machine Deals.Woot archive yet either, but thought someone should post the URL here.
There was some great info on ATC. At some point I might bookmark stuff for my own “porpoises”. [My “porpoises” are loving bookmarks :)]
FWIW, the archive supports some searches (eg “Kindle” on the deals side) and not others ("@shrdlu" on ATC). I suppose this is part of how the archive does copies. Hmmmm. Anyway, working fine, it appears.
@dashcloud
pdf.yt has disabled uploads for a few daze.
I am going to upload and link a few more on Microsoft’s service.
Somebody try viewing or downloading some of these, lemme know what does or does not work. On Android mobile, try using Chrome or Dolphin.
Possible embed from MS? I guess no.

The RIP thread isn’t up on MS servers yet. In a bit…
MS docs.com does not like the page 6 PDF of the RIP Deals.Woot thread for some reason. I will mess with it tonite.
@f00l
Goddam it.
Am getting home late, then Phelps-ing out. Eyeballs semi-glued. Brain semi-present. And it’s hot.
Will catch-up a bit on podcasts and get the deals.woot.com RIP thread up somewhere downloadable by this weekend.
I swears. I swears on The Precious.
Here, I hope, are the 9 pages and 400+ posts of the Deals.Woot RIP thread, in .pdf format, caught by mobile Firefox or mobile Chrome, I forget which.
Hosted on pdf-archive.com
Somebody pls tell me if these download ok and are legible.
I provide both the short and long URLs. These should give identical results. The short URLs were provided automatically by pdf-archive.com, not a URL shortener site.

@f00l OMFG! Why can’t it just let me download a PDF file? I don’t want it converted. Your site is making me very sad.
In fact, this site will add things to my chrome browser. I’m thinking it would be better to find some way to just use google docs or similar, and let people download the damned PDF file. I would have liked to see the PDF files, but this is not going to work for me. :-{
@f00l site does not work ༼ノಠل͟ಠ༽ノ ︵ ┻━┻
@communist
@shrdlu
I thought the site would let everyone DL the pdf’s, not convert them or something. I found the site on Google, and it was the middle of the night, and perhaps I didn’t actually read the FAQ, just skimmed it. Don’t remember now.
My apologies. Did not mean to waste anyone’s time.
I will now proceed to Do Something Else.
/giphy failure
/giphy do something else
Try try again.
Now these pdfs of woot.deals.com threads are on Google docs, where I suppose I should have put them in the 1st place. Apologies for boneheadedness - congenital problem for me.
They are not MS docs.com because that service wont upload some of them, and I don’t wanna spend two days googling for “why?” and never be able to locate an answer.
So:. I’m going with the simple obvious solution that might work, after trying a buncha convoluted stuff that didn’t.
Huh. Amazing I ever got into college. Amazing ever I got out in the manner in which my parents hoped. Oh fucking well.
;
The deals.woot.com RIP thread. Nine pages in PDF format. I think these should be right-click downloadable.
https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/mobile/folders/0B9XX7ePpWw46ZjhuNU5mRGo3MUE
;
Here are some other just-before-the-end deals.woot.com PDF page captures, if someone wants them.
https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/mobile/folders/0B9XX7ePpWw46OUtLblBWMzB0UlU
;
Unfortunately, I don’t have screen caps of the pages and pages of lobster deals.
Someone pls let me know whether or not these are downloadable and, if so, do they look ok.
A friend tested them and was able to download.
/giphy try try again
/giphy oh fucking well
@f00l
PS. Anyone who might want these, and has probs with getting them, if this doesn’t work properly, I will Try Yet Something Else.
However, for simplicity, if someone wants these by email as attachments, PM me on woot.com, same UID. I don’t care if your given reception email address is a temp one or not; that’s fine.
Only thing:. I will try to remember to check Woot.com for PM’s, but as time passes, I might forget to login over there for periods of time.
/giphy try something else
@f00l yup google docs work
@communist
Thx. Happy now! Captain, I may be a dying redshirt, but I saved the logs of the Starship Enterprise.
/giphy redshirt star trek
@f00l Thank you for working so hard on this. I really appreciate it. I do. Yep, really I do.
/giphy thank you, thank you
@f00l There were only two comments after I quit watching and went outside (according to what you saved). Narfcake, with the inevitable shirt, and then you, with London Calling.
Too bad that Meh doesn’t have a PM system, you know? That’s about the only reason to go over to Woot (I tried, for a few days, but there’s just not that much there).
Thanks for saving it. It turns out I cared.
@Shrdlu
Yeah I cared too.
According to, I think, @narfcake and @Barney, I accidentally (at a longish red light) completely and totally crushed @carl669 into oblivion to grab Last Post. Or perhaps I didn’t. But the evidence has gone, and you know what happens to evidence that gets sucked into a black hole. That mop on meh.com the other day won’t be cleaning no black hole.
Glad I managed to do the grab. It was fun to realize I’d actually probably saved it. During the last hour, musta saved 30 copies trying not to miss the last view.
@carl669, you now owe 1024 Fucks.
Pay up.
/giphy pay up
@f00l Do you have the ability to merge PDFs into one big PDF? If not, that’s fine- I may see if I can do that.
If you’re looking for a permanent host, archive.org is my choice here- easy to download from, and has a nice PDF reader embedded.
@Barney
Thank you, too. You have encouraged me. I will now feel free to do some more useless crazy OCD things.
/giphy OCD
@dashcloud
I suppose I could merge them.
There was some reason I didn’t use archive.org. File size? Too sleepy to understand it was the perfect place? Phelps overload?
Will take another look.
/giphy merge
@f00l I will testify at your trial that you did indeed beat out @carl669 for the last post on the deals.woot community forum.
/giphy she’s a witch
@Barney
Which witch? This witch!
/giphy witch
@f00l I was thinking more like this:
/giphy wicked witch of the west
@Barney
Ha ha, My Pretty One!
/giphy bad witch
@f00l Perhaps it would be best if I remembered you like this:
/image wicked witch of the east
@f00l @Barney
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead
@Barney
Like my shoes?
/giphy red shoes
@narfcake
Now that’s a tasty shirt.
Ho-Ho the witch is dead!
/giphy Ho-Ho’s
@Barney
@narfcake
Hmmm…
That witch is some hoe!
/giphy hoe witch
@f00l
fuck * 1024 = kilofuck.
@carl669
Downvoted for “lame”.
/giphy lame
For @dashcloud and anyone else, here is a merged big PDF of all the previous 9 pages of the final deals.woot.com RIP thread, now just huge PDF! Yeah!
Again, somebody please test the download, and that it looks ok when opened.
https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/mobile/folders/0B9XX7ePpWw46ODhITUxjeGw1Vk0
@f00l It does look generally fine- I haven’t read all 50 pages, just the first few, and then scrolled through the rest quickly.
Moar moar moar
Here is a single pdf of all the final few days, merged…including the RIP thread, the other misc threads I managed to grab, the last leaderboard I saved, and the dead site tombstone.
If I’m gonna put it in archive.org I have to merge it anyway. Not on archive yet, still reading FAQs.
So here is a shared link to the “big PDF” on Google drive.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B9XX7ePpWw46T2N2MGUzVktPZzQ
As always, please, someone check that this is good.
/giphy moar
@f00l omg… That gif. Next time I need to peel a whole bag of potatoes.
@RiotDemon i wish i could see better so i could see what is happening
@Yoda_Daenerys looks just like he’s jamming the apple onto a screw driver bit of some kind… I’ll have to do some research.
Edit: found his video:
I’ve watched a bunch of videos. Most people suck at it. Most of the people use a spade bit. There’s a few just using regular bits, or extensions. Then there’s this guy:
@RiotDemon
When I first landed the giphy, before I got a decent look at it, I was hoping he was coring yellow tennis balls For Absolutely No Reason.
Apples are also worthy.
