My beard is a product of my laziness/forgetfulness. I wish I shaved every day, but it seems that most days I forgot until I am on my way to work. I have decent facial hair, so it’s not a major tragedy, but I prefer my face clean-shaven.
Can. Have! Don’t right now. When I was baby-faced in college trying to get in bars the beard helped immensely, now I’m clean-shaven and only 26 and no one cards me. Sometimes I get offended. Hey lady, that sign says you’re supposed to card me unless I look 40, what the hell?
I sport the goatee that has been popular for the past fifteen or so years, have had a mustache since peach fuzz. Hope they stay acceptable cuz that difficult area to shave. NO neckbeard, ever, that’s just gross.
I have a fairly lush circle beard that I “trained” out so I could look older for the sake of my wife, who is 8 years my senior, but outside of that area it’s pretty patchy.
Once every year or two I will chop the whole thing so I can remember what my chin looks like, and re-grow it before she starts filing the divorce papers.
I have a different issue: I’ve got a bit of the ol’ indigenous American blood (Mexican Mestizo and Canadian Métis) in me so a full beard will never be a viable option. The goat is strong. Sideburns are pretty convincing if I grow my hair out past a few cm. All annoyances aside; I’m in my 40s and still get carded on the regular so I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.
I buzz it when it starts poking me and every second time the head goes with it. Once or twice a year something matters and out comes the DE razor, feather, and Taylor of old boss Street. As God intended. If you have to shave every day and aren’t using a DE at least I pray for mercy on your soul. And wallet.
It’s interesting that, so far, there have fewer votes from women than from the subset of men who have beards.
I’m in that subset. I have a full beard, which I generally keep between 1/4 and 1/2 inch. I’ve tried growing it longer, but it gets too frizzy and uncomfortable. The only time I’ve had less in the last ten years or so was when I went down to a moustache for a play I was in ('cause a bearded Groucho is just plain weird). My wife (girlfriend at the time) hated it, and I’m not allowed to do it again.
I currently have a beard (did the no-shave November thing and haven’t gotten rid of it yet), but I would like to make a PSA regarding guys with beards.
Having a beard can NOT just be an excuse to be lazy and not shave. You still have to groom that thing, dude.
In some regards growing/maintaining a beard is more work than shaving every day. The maintenance is less frequent, but more labor intensive when you do it. You eliminate the daily grind of the 2-minute shave, but when time comes to trim/sculpt your beard, it takes a steadier hand and more precision. And not all beards are created equal. Some guys have patchy coverage in places that is just going to force their hand and make them elect an alternate facial hair style. Whether that means still shaving some spots, going with a tightly cropped look or shaving completely, that is going to vary.
If you are one of these guys who say, “I just let my beard grow and never touch it and it looks great”, no it doesn’t. “But even my wife/girlfriend says it looks great”. She is lying to you. She may love facial hair, but she would love it more if it was well groomed.
@DrWorm Yup. I spend probably 10 minutes every morning with beard oil/balm and mustache wax (for the handlebar). There’s a fine line between “That’s a nice beard” and “He looks homeless”.
I’ve had a full beard for most of the last 35 years. More recently it started coming in gray in patches, so I have taken to shaving every day for the last couple years, at least until it becomes an even silver.
But here’s an observation: while my upper face and forehead have wrinkles typical of one my age, the areas formerly covered in beard are as smooth as a fresh-faced teen. Maybe the beard blocked the UV or something.
I’m lazy, so I keep at least stubble year-round (long enough to not scratch). Starting in late summer, I grow it out proper because winter is cold and a beard is warm. I use a trimmer, mini scissors, and beard cream to keep it clean-looking. When it gets warm during outdoor sports in spring, I get a straight razor shave at a high-end barber because that’s a fun experience. Then the cycle starts again.
For all the younger guys who are patchy: I couldn’t grow a full beard until I was 28, so it may kick in later for you as well.
@Kidsandliz My Ex, “Sasquatch” Sally (not her real name) could grow a respectable beard & mustache. Her vain new husband was using Rogain and she was picking some up from the pillows.
I started growing a goatee as soon as I got to college — ie, back in the Pleistocene or thereabouts. I may have shaved it off briefly in the 90s, but my memory is suspect so I wouldn’t bet on it.
I have photographic evidence of a full beard circa 1997, before the goatee reasserted itself.
Took a good few years years before I could work up a plausible mustache to go with the beard. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
Chance favors the embeardened face.
I have a beard and I don’t shave it 'cause I’m lazy, while wishing I couldn’t grow a beard 'cause it’s a pain.
I resent the chromosome answer- have you never heard of menopause? Hmmph.
@Pony So… Bearded lady?
@IWUJackson Not as uncommon as one might think.

If I knew how to post a pic id post a pic
@meh427
How about this guide from @medz?
@mflassy
NICE!!!
I can grow a legit beard, but my wife doesn’t like it. And I like my wife. So I don’t have a beard. It’s even redder than my hair too.

@meh427 heh. Yessir. Understood.
MY WHAT A GREAT PICTURE OF SOME RANDOM GUITAR
PLAYINGHOLDING INTERNET DUDE!@2many2no - they are great guitars. Years ago I bought a Rhodes EX and last year bought that strat style.
I could. I only shave every couple days. My fiancee likes it at stubble length.

Yay, beards!
Have a beard. Hate shaving.
Especially first thing in the morning.
Yes, even though I don’t have the ‘right’ chromosome.

Yep, had the same one since I was 17.
I buzz it when it starts poking me and every second time the head goes with it. Once or twice a year something matters and out comes the DE razor, feather, and Taylor of old boss Street. Even when I do shave it off, I’m not without for very long.
Full beard with shaved head (was that an option?)
I go through a yearly cycle:
-Clean shaven on the first day of spring
-Goatee through summer
-Full beard growth starts in August
-Repeat
Thinking about not shaving it this spring just to see how long it gets; it’s about two and a half inches right now.

I grew mine for a year once. I was trying for the zz top look, but I looked more like I was Amish, or a goat, @f00l.
January will be month six of ungroomed growth. It’s a little shaggy.
I want to trim it myself, but I know I can’t. I’ll spend my $24 at the barber college and let someone who at least thinks he can trim it trim it.

It’s still early so yes, I have a beard.
WAIT A MINUTE!?! it’s already ELEVEN?!?

I never thought I could, but it’s happening.
So many beards on meh! More people with beards than women apparently.

Is this a trick to find out the sex of meh forum members who have, in that regards, “ambiguous” names?

@therealjrn it’s this for real, cuz, lol.
@RiotDemon So I heard, lol.
