We can see the town that’s on fire from our mailbox, which is 2 1/2 miles from our house. Way too far to be a threat to us, but it’s creepy as hell seeing it. The storm is finally quieting down here.
@Kyeh you know when we were talking wildfires a while back and you mentioned it being dry there I thought “well thankfully it will be snowing soon!” Then I saw the headlines about the fires and thought “Fucking hell this is insane! It’s bloody winter!” Immediately thought of you and @pony. Glad you’re safe!
@Pony@sillyheathen Thanks! Yes, it’s crazy when metropolitan suburbs are burning up; I always felt like being close to the foothills put me more at risk but it turns out my mother out on the flat eastern edge of town was the one preparing to evacuate. Thankfully she didn’t have to. But the destruction is absolutely shocking.
@Kyeh That is pretty devastating. What was also sad was seeing where some unburned cars had returned and so people saw nothing was left. It was also amazing that here and there an unburned house was in the middle of all that destruction. Wonder how they got missed surrounded by burned houses.
@Kidsandliz Yeah, that’s always so mysterious! So far they haven’t had anyone on TV saying horribly insensitive things like “God looked out for us;” it’s one thing for someone to blurt that out but then to broadcast it is so offensive. Instead there’ve been several people actually talking about survivor’s guilt, feeling bad for the unlucky neighbors.

@Pony
I’d sure find that scary, if in your proximity to the fire.
We’ve been discussing it a bit in the blame thread:

Really awful, but so far they say there haven’t been any fatalities.
We got some snow, hallelujah!
There are still some hot spots but the fires are pretty much finished (for now.)
Never been sooo happy to see this!
Not a lot so far, but we’re supposed to get several more inches.

Drone footage of the area:
