AmbiVision: Awesome waste of money
6I was thinking I wanted to get that Philips Ambilight experience, but you know, without having to buy a shitty TV. Lots of messy homebrew solutions out there, apparently, but recently found Ambivision on Indegogo. It arrived this weekend. Here's the result:
Here's a few links if anyone is interested. I'm having fun with it so far and I have to say, it does add to the experience.

I've always wondered what it would be like if there was a tiny strip club right behind my TV.
@Starblind And now it's your fault that every time I see one of these setups I will think the owners are terrible people with peep holes hidden behind their TVs.
@NigelF That's not a 'peep' hole.
@Starblind Hopefully Meh will be able to sell us Barbie's Brass Pole sometime soon.
That seems so distracting.
@DrunkCat Really not so. You can adjust the intensity and the video really overplays the effect... its really not as strong IRL.
@ACraigL Ah ok. I can see this for casual TV watching or gaming. During a movie or something serious though it just seems to serve a liability to breaking the immersion.
Very cool! I've never heard about this until right now. Too bad it won't work with our set up, our TV is in front of a half wall :(
That's an awful lot of hours. I would be horribly depressed if I spent that much of my life in front of a TV.
Loved my 42in Philips with ambient lighting! I don’t like having lights on in the room but also don’t care for the overbearing flash of lights from just a TV on. When the TV died I couldn’t find a replacement that controlled the light to match the picture. Light behind it is one thing but having it match really pulls you in. @ACraigL I’m excited to look into getting this one.
@Ryaneil This was an ideal solution for me. While I like tinkering and programming, I didn't want the mess of wires associated with all the adruino/raspberry solutions, and needed something that was PC-free.
This is as simple as a setup like this can be. The developer is considering an HDMI input on it for future versions, FYI, but it was far cheaper (due to licensing costs) to go the VGA route, particularly since resolution is not an issue for the device.
@ACraigL My new issue is that I think it needs to be intergraded with the TV. I stream hulu and Netflix and watch over the air tv. There’s no way to put it in line that I know of; maybe someone sharper then me has a solution.
@Ryaneil Nope. That's a problem. I have a smart TV, but its a little older now. I got a free FireTV stick and it outperforms my TV's apps by a mile. So since it's an external source everything works fine. This simply can't work on internal sources, unless your TV has a video out. Which it definitely doesn't.
