If you click on the ““someone” replied a few seconds/minutes ago” thingy under each topic, it will take you to that post. There may be others you haven’t read beforehand, but you should be able to find them with the gray bar thingy on the left side.
@heartny
Does the gray sidebar thingie work that way if you paginate, or does it only scroll you thru the entire page of posts? I paginate in order to get media-heavy threads to actually load on mobile.
@heartny Not everyone gets that option.
I get it fine on my desktop/laptops (Chrome or IE) and tablets (IE, Edge, or Chrome), but not my phone (IE).
@f00l At least for me, the grey sidebars still show up when paginated.
@narfcake
Great Scott, are you using Windows Phone?! That’s your problem right there. I see it fine in Chrome on Android.
@jqubed Yes. Do you have a problem with the 1%?
My phone was under $25. Are there any non-shitty Android phones at that price point? The Moto E I also have can’t load a page with more than a few gifs or YouTube embeds without crashing … which is like half the threads here!
@jqubed I don’t think I’ve actually seen someone living ever use that phrase. Gave me a good laugh- thank you.
/giphy Great Scott
@narfcake Did you rotate your phone? You get more details with landscape mode.
@dashcloud That picture looks pretty landscape-y to me.
@f00l The gray sidebar works if you paginate. The sneaky thing is that the page doesn’t seem to load any differently. It seems like the whole page loads and split into divs that hide or show based on the page links, so something like a fuko reveal thread still takes a long time and eventually crashes my browser (Chrome on Android).
@dashcloud Yep, @ELUNO is correct that it is landscape mode already. 1280 x 720, so the lack of screen resolution isn’t an issue.
@narfcake
Wow. Proud individualism lives among smartphone users, thanks to Microsoft?
My brain just shut down.
/giphy no brain
@heartny
@djslack
@narfcake
I didn’t phrase carefully, above. I still get the gray sidebars, with pagination.
I have noticed that even with pagination turned on, mobile performance is just barely improved, tho whole thread still seems to try to load at once.
I gave up on even trying to load some media-heavy threads on android chrome. They seems to do better for a while on android Firefox, then that got bad. Paginated and unpaginated.
Currently using Firefox on IOS, paginated. Sometimes pages still crash. Must compare to unpaginated performance, and to performance on iOS chrome and safari, will feel motivated when Firefox starts crashing more.
Tho I like android was better than iOS, have to admit, iOS either handles memory better or allows less crap to run in background. Even some legit banking apps suck on android, devouring the processor and battery 24/7.
My question about the gray sidebars was intended to ask - if you use pagination, will the gray sidebars take you to unread replies? Or just up and down the whole page of replies?
To all ye @coders -it would be cool if somehow the background loading fucked up the mobile experience a bit less.
/giphy crash
@f00l I have no issues on my S7.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Actually let me clarify I have had one issue. The 24 inch by 36 inch poster at 300 DPI that I posted as the main image for #SNAPTEMBER2016 was problematic, but that’s a very very very serious outlier.
That said, Shawn said they are using lazy loading so I can’t think of a whole lot more they could be doing for you. Sounds like you’re having issues with inexpensive (read: ‘a few generations old’) phones not being able to pass muster.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@jbartus … and I didn’t have an issue with that page with my WP.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@f00l Proud? Nah. Technically, it’s not even 1%, but the joke wouldn’t work so well if I said 0.7%.
WP works for my needs and that’s what matters.
@f00l I just realized I may have applied something @narfcake said to you unfairly. The $25 mentioned earlier was related to the Windows Phone so my point about older models and such may or may not apply to your device depending on what said device is.
@jbartus
Note 3, Note 4, Nexus 6. So decent hardware.
I “carefully forgot” to mention that these various browsers usually have something like 300+ tabs open per browser. Thus allowing everyone to track all my behavior. I’m sure my “OCD too many tabs” problem has nothing to do with stuff not loading, right?
/giphy worst practices
@f00l it probably has everything to do with it
Notes are good devices and the Nexus 6 isn’t too shabby but they are both a couple of years old, that said if you really rock 300 open tabs you’re just begging for issues as you tie up all kinds of memory.
@jbartus
It’s never “UNFAIR” to unfairly apply demerits/criticism ("deserved ", or not) to my situation.
/giphy I deserved that
@jbartus
Yeah, contemplating Note 7. But fuck Samsung. So…Hmmmm.
Re tabs, I know, I know, I know. Can’t stop myself. IOS does handle this somewhat better tho.
/giphy just can’t stop myself
@f00l why fuck Samsung?
Is it bad I recognize the character in the deserved that giphy?
@jbartus
If you recognized a character from my giphy, you’re ahead of me.
Re Samsung…they really pissed me off when they killed the microsd slot and removable battery. And did a few other things that ticked off the /root crowd.
I know, the card slot is back. And I know, re removable battery, /reasons. Still not entirely forgiven tho.
If they had done that “2fer” promo on the Note 7 they way they did for the S7, I would have likely already bought one. Looking at the Sams Club offer, assuming it’s still going. If Sams can handle “cheapie plus contract ext”, I still have one of those setups.
Or wait till price falls, or someone else does a big launch on a fall phablet.
@heartny Anyway…I never knew that worked! Always bugged me that I had to go search for the new response. So thanks for the tip.
@f00l the anime one is Honey-senpai from Ouran High School Host Club. (Please do not ask how I know this)
@narfcake
@salaosantiago Ugh, I can’t figure out the pictures…
/image fuck pictures
Anyway, it’s all there in edge on mobile.
@jbartus you watched them all? Did you read the manga? I did.
@RiotDemon I have not read the manga, I’m not really a manga reader.
@jbartus omg. It’s so much better. The anime is nice because they’re such goofballs… But the ending was subpar. That’s of course because the manga wasn’t finished when they started doing the show, so they made up an ending.
I think I might re-read it now.
One of two series I actually own, and that’s because I bought half of them at around 75% off.
They’re just too expensive.
@narfcake Wait, you’re not someone who’s using Windows Phone because you’re a die-hard Microsoft
fanevangelist who really likes the product and wants to help Microsoft grow the platform, and is looking forward to the time 5 years from now when everyone has abandoned iOS and Android for the glory that is Windows Phone (or was, up until sometime in the past year when reality finally set in)? Or you didn’t buy your phone because a close friend or family member is the above person and strongly encouraged you to jump aboard Windows Phone? Because I’ve never met a Windows Phone user who didn’t fall into one of those two categories.@f00l you’re funny,
sometimessometime@heartny what does “beforehand” mean in your post? further up? earlier in time?
@jqubed Correct that I’m neither; I was simply looking for value. When I started with a 521, cheap Android phones were severely compromised; slow single core processor + low memory + low resolution + bloated OS + a “camera” that could capture details as small as a cow was NOT something that I cared for.
@Yoda_Daenerys
I’m funny? Perhaps. “Sometime”.
It’s giphy that’s funny. I steal everything giphy’s got, when it’s looking the other way.
/giphy funny giphy
@Yoda_Daenerys When I said “beforehand” I meant comments that were posted prior to the one that shows up as ““someone” replied a few seconds/minutes ago” under each topic. For example, if it says ““someone” replied 5 minutes ago”, you may not have seen a comment that was posted 10 minutes ago. If I’m logged in to Meh, the earlier post has a gray bar next to it when I click into the topic so I know I haven’t read it yet. I can’t speak for everyone on every device, but that’s been my current observation.
@heartny well, to be honest (first time this month?), i have no idea what i posted earlier, so i accept your response
btw, i love NY too, i was born “in the falls”
maybe i’ll change my username to that, bornInTheFalls, yea?
@Yoda_Daenerys
@heartny
What are you two talking about wait you don’t seem to know wait I don’t wanna know either not beforehand or afterhand or underhand or overhand or righthand or lefthand or
Uhhh…
What’s that? Is that a grey sidebar? Fuck! It is! Damn. Where have they been all this time that they’ve been right there and I didn’t see them even tho I was looking right at them???
Huh. Pattern recognition. Well, Remedial Time. Again.
Does this have something to do with posting at red lights or am I just stupid?
Don’t answer that.
I said, Don’t answer that! Manners!
/giphy grey sidebar
@heartny Holy fuck!
Usually, I notice things like the gray bar and figure them out on my own. I’ve been wondering if my mind is starting to go and this type of thing merely makes me even more concerned that early onset Alzheimer’s may be starting (I’m 53… I think).
Thanks, I learned something new today.
Ok. Have messed around w pagination and non-pagination and seeing most recent vs whole thread and all that. On mobile. Because /lazy.
I am clinically insane, and always right; please don’t interrupt, very rude of you.
Here Is What Should Happen:
All the current options for thread viewing PLUS an additional choice that can be applied to every combo of settings:
NEW posts and replies to have the option of Appearing In A Different Color Or Font Or Background Or Something Like That.
All you coders and designers and so forth, pls prove that you are good for something besides pretending to work while being kicked around by The Community.
Community, go forth and kick something around!
@f00l
And in addition, there should be a STICKY “good posting” guide that includes a list of fancy formatting and embedding options, so when I take on the infinitely banal task of Self-Improvement And Learning To Be A Better Person, I don’t have to /Google that.
/google better person
15 Ways to Be a Better Person - The New York Times

/giphy better person
@f00l Here’s the Style Guide, which is likely out of date, as some things are easier or automatic now, and none of the slash stuff is listed.
https://meh.com/forum/topics/meh-style-guide-learn-how-to-post-good
Did you see that you can create your own custom pagination stuff?
Custom: build your own display mode using the following settings:
Also, that gray line to the right marks unread posts.
You can also use @jsh139’s Meh scroller extension, which lets you easily jump to unread posts in a thread.
@dashcloud
Thx for link. I know there’s a style guide somewhere, and s post good guide somewhere, I suppose I bookmarked them in some browser of other.
Re all that stuff: Het, STICKY already!
No one wants any extra characters to type around here.
Re browser extension: does that work on mobile browsers (both android and iOS), since wimpy android doesn’t wanna open media-heavy threads if I also just accidentally happen to have 100’s of other tabs open, as usual.
/giphy Sticky Fingers
@f00l You know you can always use Pin Tab in Chrome & Firefox- it’s what I do for tabs that should always be accessible no matter how many hundreds I have open.
@dashcloud
Does it work on mobile?
@f00l Apparently it is not there, which sucks. Blame @sammydog01 for getting your hopes up over such a thing existing.
@dashcloud
@sammydog01
@sammydog01 you screwed me over again
/giphy screwed
@f00l I would like to help you with the blah blah blah computer stuff you’re talking about but:
@sammydog01
/giphy don’t know where you’re goating
if i’m not mis-taken this thread has taken a whole 'nother direction from my Q, Meh.?
@Yoda_Daenerys
/giphy re-routing
@Yoda_Daenerys This is as on-topic as any other thread here.
@narfcake good point
@Yoda_Daenerys
Or…
/giphy bad point! Bad bad bad!
so on ChromeOS, or whatever it’s called, there’s the gray bar to the right side of some posts. are those the ones i haven’t seen? i must have missed that memo?
@Yoda_Daenerys Yes- that’s the unread post marker.
@dashcloud thx, when did that become a thing?
i really cudda used it on the steel cage match weekend, remember @baqui63, @jbartus, @carl669, @narfcake, @compunaut?
just thinking about it i’m getting a little teary eyed and feeling a bit verklempt
@Yoda_Daenerys
We’ll wait.
/giphy compose yourself
@f00l love is our resistance
@Yoda_Daenerys it’s been that way for a long, long time now. i think since the beginning of time.
@carl669
So was Pluto a planet way back when Time began? Seems like it was.
