@smilingjack reminds me of Nantucket. I swear to god I was eating a sandwich at Something Natural (great sandwiches) not five feet away from Bill Belichick. Nobody said or did a thing.
@jbartus Yeah, the Vineyard is the same. If you see someone who looks like someone famous, It most likely is. You ignore them. Except if I see Larry David. I will yell "You 4 eyed fuck" at him. I have to.
@jbartus if it isnt obvious to you it has to do with you shitting bill belichick all over the threads -- goes to your general level of immaturity -- maybe youre just a douche on the internet??? yeah i doubt it too
@mehtherfucker I'm sorry my relation of a story that related to another user's comment conveyed in response to their story about a similar mindset in New York as I encountered in Nantucket bothered you. I will make an effort to try to encounter any member of the New England Patriots when having experiences that might later become something I relate to others on the internet so as to avoid offending your delicate sensibilities.
I actually met him when he was doing summer stock theater in Northern Michigan. Real nice guy. I found the picture. We were standing outside the TV station at the time. Like I said it's from the 70's so it looks a bit groovy.
@JonT I must admit your stache (and connecting sideburns) are more fantastical but then again I'm about 19 in this pick. Still to this day I can't grow a respectable beard.
@dashcloud I used "We do what we must, because we can" as a placeholder tagline on our company Website while it was under construction. . . we were in the middle of a major re-branding / re-boot and the kid doing the graphics thought it was the real tag and incorporated it into the logos he presented at a board meeting. He didn't understand why everyone in the room was falling off their chairs laughing . . . He didn't last too long.
@dashcloud I could write a book but it may make a better graphic novel. I'm sure I can think of more than a few. I've got plenty of my own though too. We'll see.
(On my way to the airport, flew back for the Royals game because I promised my son I'd be there for Scout Day at the K, and well, PROMISES [great game] - back in a couple weeks for a few days - have fun kids)
@Mehrocco_Mole My ex-wife routinely assumed room temperature (usually even bringing the ambient temperature in the room down a few degrees) but yet never managed to get around to the dying half of that equation . . .
Abe Vigoda still lives! Here's a description of him from IMDB: "Tall, dour-faced and slouch-shouldered character actor who has proved himself in both gritty dramatic roles and as an actor with wonderful comedic timing."
"While living in Los Angeles, I'd jog three to five miles a day. One morning jogging, my agent calls about a new series called Barney Miller, saying, "Go there at once."
"Well, I was tired and exhausted ... I must have run five miles that morning. I said. "I have to go home and take a shower."
"No, no, no. Go right now to Studio City, you're very right for it, they know you from The Godfather, they want to see you."
"With my shorts?"
"Go!"
"Danny Arnold and Ted Flicker, the producers, look at me, I look at them, they look at me again. "You look tired."
"Of course I'm tired, I jogged five miles this morning, I'm exhausted."
"Yeah, yeah, tell me, you look like you have hemorrhoids."
"I say, "What are you, a doctor or a producer?""
— Abe Vigoda, quoted in Louis Zorich's What Have You Done?: The Inside Stories of Auditioning—from the Ridiculous to the Sublime (2009)
@Pavlov is in Germany, I spoke with him by phone earlier today. Yes, @BillLehecka started this bit in his daily "newsletter" during his tenure as goat and was responsible for bringing the "Abe" meme to Meh. @Pavlov started this thread to keep the updates going once Bill's term was over.
Understandably, @Pavlov is shaken by the news that Abe has passed away. Although, this is the fourth or fifth time his death has been reported in the mainstream news, and the shock value has long since worn off. Plus, it was anticipated. He was, after all, as old as Moses.
However, @Pavlov mentioned that this thread shall live on as a memorial to Abe, the actor and the man, and that frequent updates on Abe's status here shall continue.
Friends and family celebrated the life and career of character actor Abe Vigoda on Sunday, joking that they were burying him for the last time.
Comedian Gilbert Gottfried had the audience at Riverside Memorial Chapel on the Upper West Side in stitches as he riffed on the long-running joke about whether Vigoda — known for his roles on sitcom “Barney Miller” and in the American mob classic “The Godfather” — was dead or alive.
“This is the 20th time we've buried Abe Vigoda,” Gottfried remarked.
“Abe was so old, his best friend in school was [Jesus] Christ. Abe was so old, he had a pet dinosaur. Abe was so old, he had a copy of the Bible - signed by the authors.”
In more serious moments, speakers remembered Vigoda, who died Tuesday at 94, as a talented actor who never let fame get to his head.
“His acting was his profession and that was it. It was a regular job,” his daughter Carol Vigoda-Fuchs told roughly 100 people in attendance, including former Mayor David Dinkins.
Al Pacino wrote a tribute to the Vigoda family he shared at the service: “I always loved Abe. He was there at the start for me. He was [a] gentle, kind soul, which he projected in his art with such eloquence and of course his simple timing could not be improved upon.”
“I guess God just said, ‘You know what, it’s time to go,’ ” Vigoda-Fuchs said. “He was happy to be in my house, not alone, which was his greatest fear of dying, to be alone. And he wasn't.”
Uniformed members of the NYPD carried Vigoda’s coffin out of the chapel. It was adorned with a folded American flag in recognition of his service in the Army.
“The Godfather” theme serenaded the crowd.
Several fans paid their respects also. “He seemed like a very nice person,” said Gary Wexler, 60. “Not to be crass, but that was one of the best funerals I’ve ever been to.”
Abe was born Abraham Charles Vigoda in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday February 24, 1921. Abe was the son of Lena (née Moses) and Samuel Vigoda, Jewish immigrants from Russia. His father was a tailor who had two other sons: Hy and Bill. Abe grew up on New York City's Lower East Side. With his gravelly voice and sunken eyes, Vigoda was a popular character actor for more than four decades and was beloved by millions.
Abe would have celebrated his 95th birthday today.
@f00l - I was thinking about this - Are the Oscars for stuff that happened in 2015? And didn't Abe die in 2016, so he would be recognized at the next Oscars? I am srsly asking, I don't know how it works.
@Mehrocco_Mole Nope. He won't. (sadly) Famously long rumored to be dead, beloved character actor Abe Vigoda died for real in January at age 94. But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't seem to notice.
In any case, it omitted Vigoda from the "In Memoriam" package on Sunday's Oscarcast, and his daughter is incensed.
"Abe's family feels disappointed and cheated by the Academy," said Carol Vigoda Fuchs on Monday. "Abe gave his life and heart to acting, and a simple tribute in recognition of his devotion was overlooked."
Vigoda, of course, was unforgettable in "The Godfather" for his performance as Salvatore "Sal" Tessio, the doomed Mafia soldier.
So Fuchs wonders why the Academy forgot him, even as it paid tribute to Alex Rocco, seen in the same 1972 film as Las Vegas casino owner Moe Green. Rocco, who died last July at age 79, was among the four dozen industry figures honored in the segment.
@KDemo @mfladd @Mehrocco_Mole The Academy paid tribute during the ceremony segment to David Bowie, Alan Rickman, and others who died in early 2016.
The Academy has commented on Vigoda'a absence from the segment, saying, in effect, "But he's on our "In Memoriam" webpage." Which seems beyond lame.
It's possible the show has to lock down the final edit and length, of the tribute early, and since he died later than some others, he'll show up next year.
I dunno. I noticed and was pissed.
Having the Saddest Face in Hollywood, tied the Eeyore of course, should mean something.
Sunday's on-air tribute had room for about 50 names in 3 1/2 minutes; the online "full list" at the Academy Awards' website has nearly 140 names of people in the industry who died in 2015 and early 2016.
The Academy has been resigned to the fact that at least a few absences would make the news (they did) as this is an issue every year.
Fucking fuckers can't get a visual effects award right, and then they omit Abe . . . and the omission pisses me off more than the VFX category.
I guess I can count myself lucky as I had an extra year of joy and laughter with Mr. Vigoda. Once I am able to get my thoughts together, maybe I could share a few stories and remembrances about Abe and me.
@carl669 you know. I wonder if he was cryogenicly frozen for that purpose of proving still alive at some point in the future. It’s like he would be rickrolling entire generations after people wouldn’t know what a Rick roll is…
@f00l Things are great! Thanks for asking. In the process of moving. As they say at Disneyland, “Big doin’s going on!” Hope to be back around for more than just a drive-by post in a month or so . . . just popped in to wish Abe the happiest of birthdays. Well, as happy as a dead guy can get, that is . . .
@f00l Could be construed as a violation. Well south of the Equator. The Mrs. and the little one are staying here until summer. @PantHeist has some details but was sworn (bribed) to secrecy.
Seriously, details soon though - I need to close on a few things yet and buying property outside the US is a bigger bitch ass hurdle than I had ever imagined. A couple of other members here are helping me out actually (gratis), with legal paperwork, etc. . . . I love this place and you people!
This thread isn’t about me though, it is all about Mr. Vigoda. Or what is left of him. Happy Birthday Abe!
But in all seriousness, regardless of what one believes happens (or not) after death, everyone can agree that once a person dies, there is no physical pain, so…
You can always have an instant check on Abe's status here: Is Abe Vigoda Dead?
I actually met him when he was doing summer stock theater in Northern Michigan. Real nice guy. If I can find the picture I'll post it. (Warning: it's from the 70's)
Fish.....................
And was
mentioned in a Beastie Boys song
How about now?
still kickin
Yes Bernice.
Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
@2many2no This was inevitable...and still funny.
I believe Mr. Vigoda should consider running for President. How could he go wrong with a name like Abe?
@BillLehecka I'm sorry the subtext seems to have been missed by a few . . .
Still alive.
Sadly, Tom Hagen wouldn't let Sal Tessio off the hook.
@eyewerks Tom did what he had to do - just as Tessio did . . . It could have been no other way. It was the smart play . . .
@eyewerks But he could have... Just for old times sake...
He's not on the 2015 death pool either!
I went out to dinner with Gimma, the mod from woot. Abe Vigoda was at the next table.
Since we were in Manhattan, we had to ignore him.
The rule of the city is that natives must ignore everyone. Then go home and tell anyone who will listen who you saw!
In case anyone wants to go find him, we were in a restaurant on the upper east side. If he is still alive, he probably still lives there.
@smilingjack reminds me of Nantucket. I swear to god I was eating a sandwich at Something Natural (great sandwiches) not five feet away from Bill Belichick. Nobody said or did a thing.
@jbartus you are just a real special kind of douchebag troll arent you
@jbartus Yeah, the Vineyard is the same. If you see someone who looks like someone famous, It most likely is. You ignore them. Except if I see Larry David. I will yell "You 4 eyed fuck" at him. I have to.
@drfeelgood wtf??
@smilingjack yeah it's weird how in most places in the country they'd get mobbed or something but on the islands no fucks are given. :P
Still alive.
Alive, still.
Geez, this thread is destroying inches in my last two journal posts.
I'm not seeing the downside. :P
Still alive.
@Pavlov no joke
@nadroj Yes, there is one here. You're just not getting it (the joke, that is).
The thread shall never die . . . When Abe goes, only his status will change.
I've actually amended my will so the act of keeping this thread alive will be perpetual - if I go before Abe, it will still be updated.
Blame last month's goat. :P

I actually met him when he was doing summer stock theater in Northern Michigan. Real nice guy. I found the picture. We were standing outside the TV station at the time. Like I said it's from the 70's so it looks a bit groovy.
@Mehrocco_Mole Groovy man . . . groovy.
@Mehrocco_Mole awesome picture, rad hair, fantastic stache.
@JonT I must admit your stache (and connecting sideburns) are more fantastical but then again I'm about 19 in this pick. Still to this day I can't grow a respectable beard.
@Mehrocco_Mole Damn, that was from back in the 70s?!?
Abe hasn't un-aged a day since now.
cool, Leisure Suit Abe
@cranky1950 OMG! I played this! Get it out of my head!
@Mehrocco_Mole
@TerriblyHuang Great song back in the day!
@cranky1950 Actually it was a jacket not a leisure suit. Northern Michigan (Traverse City) can be chilly in the summer for people not used to it.
@Mehrocco_Mole Thanks for the warning - I almost clicked it...
Surprised no one has posted this very appropriate song yet:
If you haven't played Portal yet, it is a spoiler if you've avoided it to this point.
@dashcloud I used "We do what we must, because we can" as a placeholder tagline on our company Website while it was under construction. . . we were in the middle of a major re-branding / re-boot and the kid doing the graphics thought it was the real tag and incorporated it into the logos he presented at a board meeting. Forgive me.
But, a promise is a promise.
Oh, and Abe, he's still alive.
@MrsPavlov a sigh is just a sigh
@MrsPavlov Welcome! Glad to see you jump on the forums. @Pavlov always speaks very highly of you, and he isn't even paying me to say that.
@JonT I put up with his shit. He'd better speak highly of me.
@MrsPavlov hahaha, I can imagine that is a full-time job (it's basically what I do every day and it is my full-time job).
@JonT When he's between projects, he spends a bit too much time screwing around, so I can only imagine too well. Thanks for the welcome.
@MrsPavlov Welcome aboard! He has always a story to tell here- do you have any you can share about him or involving him?
@dashcloud I could write a book but it may make a better graphic novel. I'm sure I can think of more than a few. I've got plenty of my own though too. We'll see.
@MrsPavlov They're pretty graphic stories?
He lives on.

@Pavlov I love this gif.
@sohmageek Sorry, yes - Still dead. : (
Hey Abe it sux that you're gone. We miss ya.
Hey there Abe, wherever you are.
Abe, you were snubbed at the 2016 Oscars, "In Memoriam" segment. Sorry man.
But you are eternal, on film, so no worries. Besided, given your "look", you and Eeyore are spirit-twins.
So F the Academy.
@f00l I agree. That wasn't right. Only some people will find this amusing. But I do,
Pour one out for Abe.

The Academy has been resigned to the fact that at least a few absences would make the news (they did) as this is an issue every year.
Fucking fuckers can't get a visual effects award right, and then they omit Abe . . . and the omission pisses me off more than the VFX category.
How about a little Fish?
Because @cranky1950 (and @KDemo).

@Pavlov - We once worked together, Abe Vigoata and I.
@Pavlov because
Still dead.
@hems79 Thanks, I forgot to mention the one salient detail.
@Pavlov Had to google "salient." Thanks for the big werd.
Hey Abe. Thought of you on Thanksgiving.
Bet you’re still dead tho.
@f00l
Man, just found out a few minutes ago. How was this missed! dang. rip Mr. Vigoda
@miko1 Welcome to now, glad you caught up.
so, spontaneous resurrection is looking less and less likely.
sigh
I guess I can count myself lucky as I had an extra year of joy and laughter with Mr. Vigoda. Once I am able to get my thoughts together, maybe I could share a few stories and remembrances about Abe and me.
I know it may be hard to believe, but it has been one year since Abe passed away.
So much in the world has changed.
We miss you, Abe.
At least he didn’t live long enough to have to witness the current political spectacle. RIP Abe.
@MrsPavlov Still dead.
@mehtherfucker

@MrsPavlov dammit! i figured since the thread popped to the top there had been some sort of miraculous resurrection.
@mehtherfucker @MrsPavlov Still dead.
@carl669 you know. I wonder if he was cryogenicly frozen for that purpose of proving still alive at some point in the future. It’s like he would be rickrolling entire generations after people wouldn’t know what a Rick roll is…
Is it time to start a watch on Ed Asner?
/giphy we miss you
Happy Birthday, Abe.
. . . still fucking dead.
@Pavlov
I miss him.
But at least you live. How’s whatever you are doing these days?
@f00l Things are great! Thanks for asking. In the process of moving. As they say at Disneyland, “Big doin’s going on!” Hope to be back around for more than just a drive-by post in a month or so . . . just popped in to wish Abe the happiest of birthdays. Well, as happy as a dead guy can get, that is . . .
@Pavlov
Do we get to ask what part of the universe you’re moving to, or is that a violation of your survival and escape protocol?
Gotta run!
@Pavlov
You guys be safe in some gorgeous place then.
Hey Abe, Happy Birthday.
@Pavlov I use the mohu every day
@Pavlov Happy BDay Abe. I share his 2/24 birthday! Cool!!
@Pavlov - You’re so lucky (smart) to be getting away from this insane horror circus. Please take me with you?
@pavlov
thinking of you…
@mikibell
Hehehe.
@mikibell : )
I just read this entire thread
I hate reading these things because everyone is so happy and enjoying the bit and you have to think the whole time
These poor bastards… they don’t know what’s coming.
@legendornothing
I don’t plan on dying as I stated in the tombstone thread.
But in all seriousness, regardless of what one believes happens (or not) after death, everyone can agree that once a person dies, there is no physical pain, so…
Abe’s birthday fast approaches.
Still dead.
@Pavlov That tag in the goat calendar thread reminded you, didn’t it?
@Thumperchick Shh.
/youtube abe vigoda conan
Abe, we still miss ya.
Still fucking dead.
Happy birthday, Abe.
