A Month of Lego - Lego Ideas & 21309 Saturn V
11To date, 31 sets have been released in the Ideas (formerly CUUSO) series. The beauty of all of these sets is that they were designed by AFOLs. The ideas.lego.com website is the place to submit ideas with the hopes of having your design published. In order to be published, you must receive 10,000 public votes and then pass a review by the Lego Group. If you succeed though, you get a 1% royalty on net sales. Not too shabby.
Personally, I own several of the Ideas series, but I’ve only built one of them (don’t ask, I have a lot of Lego still in new boxes) - The NASA Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket. Fan designed by Felix Steissen and Valerie Roche, it’s an impressive build with 1969 pieces - yes this is the same number of pieces as the year it was launched. When completed the rocket stands over 39" in height and separates into the various stages (in case you wanted to play with it). The CSM (Command Service Module) and Lunar modules all ride inside the rocket and can be either displayed within the entire rocket or split out and used separately. This set includes 3 microfigure astronauts as well. Overall, I’m impressed by the size, scale, stability and details of this build.
As for mine, it is hanging on the wall. Found some mounts on Thingiverse. Also, a little tidbit while researching this. It sounds like they intend to re-release this (along with the ship in the bottle). We’ll see how much they change the sets and whether it is worth picking them up as well.
On a personal note, I blew out my back (no one to blame but me), so not spending too much time in front of the keyboard today.

That is impressive. Sorry about your back. I can, however blame you for my admiration and my not having one of my own. Yet.
Another fun way to display it:
I don’t have this but I’ve used the technique to make lights. Fun stuff.
I like this one!
I bought this one as soon as I found out it was slated to be retired. Still NIB. I probably will choose to keep it that way.
I really need to order the Apollo lunar lander before it gets retired. Same for the VW Beetle and T1 camper van.
@ruouttaurmind I remember that.

@kykazaa I have the Ship in a Bottle 21313. Are you saying it’s going to be re-introduced in a different configuration? And the rocket as well? Neither of these has been retired very long.
@ruouttaurmind Here is the article…we’ll find out the truth on Nov 1.

My guess is they will tweak something. While they have re-released sets in the past, it is pretty infrequent/rare that they don’t change something. We’ll see what happens.
@ruouttaurmind well, they re-released with a new number. They even used the same copy on the web page (it references new for 2018 wax seal). Too bad, it would have been really cool if they had included a new ship or different colors. https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/ship-in-a-bottle-92177
@kykazaa Same with the Saturn V. Different item number, everything else identical. This has me questioning my strategy of “one to build, one to collect”. The only value in the pristine unopened box is the item numbers.
@kykazaa @ruouttaurmind Toys are for playing with. GO OPEN THOSE BOXES!
I have this one. Might be my favorite. Love the way you have it displayed.
This is very cool. My best friend bought this one when the pandemic started. I’m not sure he’s done it yet.
I just want to mention that I dreamt about Legos last night. I think I was a mini figure. Thanks.
