@rjquillin from the casemates Kickstarter promise:
“On Casemates, you’ll find fresh wine deals three times a week (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), and we’ll be building tools to let you share by-the-case orders with other users near you for better deals than ever. Split an order with friends you never knew you had — and share the savings you get from shipping a whole case.”
@mike808@rjquillin
A good tool would allow me to express interest in purchasing a partial case while remaining anonymous until someone else within a certain range of me also expressed interest. The tool would match us up and process the purchase using the shipping address somehow agreed upon.
@daveinwarsh Yep, meh doesn’t know they’re dealing with sofistikatted poeple…and no smart replies. You mess with me, and you mess with the whole trailer court.
@rtjhnstn@wyk3d As a resident of that fine state, I am surprised too. Knowing that we finally allowed liquor stores to sell on Sundays, I would have thought the liquor lobbyists would have pressured to disallow internet sales of the sweet nectar of the gods.
@404Error@rtjhnstn@wyk3d Could be that tgr Illanoyances wanted extortion money for an import license to raise money for the state deficit or to protect the states wine industry using the same tactics as the milk and beef industries (why you never see coupons on milk or cut meat.)
@dasred It depends on the winery. Each deal on Casemates is still limited by the winery’s licenses with each state. So if you cant get it, reach out to your local state congress-critter and tell them what you think about “burdensome” red tape in the state’s wine licensing, and like good conservative business-friendly free-market loving 'Muricans, they need to get rid of those “big gubmint” laws ASAP.
Who made this?
We did. Wine’s actually super easy: take a handful of store bought grapes and put them in a blender with 3 cups of vodka and some wood chips, blend, and let age for… IDK… 45 minutes? Boom. You got yourself some wine!
That was so awesome I nearly bought without thinking about it further.
I know the winery that produced it, and their stuff is usually pretty good. Hopefully this isn’t past it’s prime age point. If I’m not crazy about it I can save it for the Post-Covid19 celebrations.
Being asked my age at checkout is often a dilemma, I keep worrying the year date won’t go back far enough, but this one went back to 1900, so all those 120 year old out there can buy in also.
Nice that I’ll have to sign for it, that’s a chance to give a bottle to our UPS driver, who deserves something special for running all day in full PPE delivering all those infected Amazon boxes.
/giphy mindless-hateful-throat
@stolicat They’ve relaxed their protocols due to the virus. I received a shipment last week. The driver verbally confirmed that I was the recipient, then handed me the box at arm’s length - the prominent ‘signature required’ label being completely ignored.
@rpstrong@spitfire6006006@stolicat maybe people will realize that all these unnecessary laws and restrictions are actually not needed…right…who the f am I kidding.
@rpstrong@spitfire6006006@stolicat shipping restrictions on wine are only there to keep competition from the big wine and beer makers…they are the ones that push for it. Any politician who says otherwise is either lying or an idiot (or both).
Honestly, I’m still holding out hope for a craft beer version of Casemates. I’m not much of a wine drinker, but some good weekly affordable craft beer selections delivered right to my house? Yes, please! Send a firkin!
@yellowfellow because if you rearrange the letters in ‘iowa’, it doesn’t spell anything fun.
really though, it depends on the winery. from @mike808’s post above:
“Each deal on Casemates is still limited by the winery’s licenses with each state. So if you cant get it, reach out to your local state congress-critter and tell them what you think about “burdensome” red tape in the state’s wine licensing, and like good conservative business-friendly free-market loving 'Muricans, they need to get rid of those “big gubmint” laws ASAP.”
This might be why it isn’t offered in as many states as it did when it was on Casemates. The winery’s licenses in those states expired and they didn’t renew them and Meh took the leftovers from casemates to offer here today with whatever state’s wine-by-mail licenses were still valid.
@hunter7411 each winery has to get licenses for direct sales. My guess is that the one for IL expired or lapsed before Meh took the leftovers from Casemates.
I can’t see any downside to this. If I don’t like it, I’ll just use it to barter for toilet paper. The results have to be better than the ones I had trying to barter all the Bluetooth speakers I’ve bought here.
I bought a case of this off Casemates when it was first offered. What I can tell you is that I remember very little about them, which implies to me that it was neither outstanding or horrible. It was pretty dry, not horribly complex, and absolutely inoffensive. A good daily drinker, especially at this price… but not what I would call memorable.
If you guys haven’t been to Casemates, you ought to check it out. It’s a great site and the forum is particularly fascinating. There are some very, very knowledgeable wine drinkers on there. I’ve learned a lot just by reading the comments for each particular wine. Even better is when the winemaker chimes in… Clark Smith (Winesmith) is particularly fascinating. They get some really interesting stuff on there. It ranges in price from cheaper stuff (like this) to $100 bottles. Most ends up in the $12-$20/bottle price range, though, and would argue that many have even better QPR than this particular selection.
Just adding my voice to the choir. When I tried to order, I was told you cannot ship to Ohio, however, the provided Casemates link clearly showed Ohio as being a ship-to state. What gives??
@JoseBandito
There are some producers, if they show up, that have workarounds. Should we get an appearance, it doesn’t hurt to ask and frequently is successful.
Not sure if @WineDavid49 will have as much latitude on this one tho…
I have to say, I am no wine snob, but enjoy a nice red here and there, and I bought this when it was on casemates and it was not that great. Super light or something. I don’t know the fancy wine terms. But I did not enjoy it.
I used the remaining bottles in a crockpot with mulling spices during Thanksgiving at our house though, and it was great for that.
@moonhat@zippyus
It’s about time to try another bottle from that batch.
Past experience with these offers, and from that other site! before the move, has shown a few extra years on the bottles has really paid dividends.
@moonhat@zippyus
On the other, and old, sites I’d buy cases of Pedroncelli, put 'em in the cellar and just forget about them for 5+ years, sometimes longer if they really got buried. It can be a crap shoot. A well made bottle can drink well above it’s weight and Ped generally does that. Plonk, otoh, will still be plonk and will be dtd in an instant. I don’t recall much about this one, but wanted to have a first edition, just because…
@sammydog01 I know one person in Minnesota, but he’s a recovering alcoholic, so probably in poor taste to ship a case of wine for him to hold for me. Same reason I don’t send him hunting for hard to find bourbons. Maybe he’s strong enough… I should rethink this.
Bought this when it premiered on Casemates (and shipped to Illinois) and liked it. Got my case on the way (since I now live in Missouri).
/giphy roasted-precise-pocket
if anyone in the sf east bay wants to split an order, let me know. i’m thinking of ordering the smaller option, and really only need two bottles to carry me through the next year
10 days later and product has not yet shipped. I want Meh employees to stay safe during COVID-19, so, please, SAFETY first, but any idea of when these will ship?
@juice13 I never had the Cyclops. Some of the old WWs were pretty good and some were “Meh.” Oh wait, what site are we on?? OK it makes sense. But yes almost all were at least a bit better a year or a few years later. And none really sucked, so that’s actually saying a lot for an $8-$10 wine. Plus no need to put on a mask and go to a grocery store (or liquor store depending on your state.) EDIT: I still felt funny going into a liquor store with a mask the first time; it just seems to bring up scenes from lots of TV shows and movies, and doesn’t usually end well for someone…
Received in North Carolina today. Have not opened yet. Will update when I try it. Also UPS guy didn’t ask for signature anymore here but that’s probably YMMV).
Received mine in TX 4/21 in the late afternoon. Right into the freezer with one bottle and we had it with dinner. A perfect quality to price ratio wine for weeknights. The first small glass was without the vinturi, after that with the vinturi, and as proven in our other single blind tests, it’s “better”.
Dear MEH, I am never going to buy wine from you again. If the wine was meh, I’d be OK with that, but why the hell you had to ship like 20 cubic feet of styrofoam with that? Enough to fully fill my thrashcan, which usually takes me two weeks to fill with thrash otherwise…
Verdict-I had low expectations, and was happily surprised. It’s sweeter than I expected, without being cloying, and really nicely balanced. Would buy again.

Hahaha! Here you go parents! Load up!
April fools is over
I’ll stick with my quarantinis, thanks.
/image quarantini
@jsh139 it’s not a quarantini unless you wear protective gear.
@carl669
Why sell wine here when there’s an actual Mediocre wine selling website?
@curtise free(?) advertising
@curtise Where? link?
@Achromatter https://casemates.com/
@Achromatter @curtise Here’s the original comments and tasting notes from casemates.com:
https://casemates.com/forum/topics/casemates-qpr-select-red-blend
@curtise I felt the same way, keep my mediocre purchases mediocre and put the wine back where it belongs!
@RogerWilco Thanks, I had no idea this existed.
@Achromatter your wallet will hate you for learning casemates exists.
Did you lose the casemates domain name?
How will I be able to split a case with someone near me without the tools casemates offers?
@medz We have tools?
We only wish it were so…
@rjquillin from the casemates Kickstarter promise:
“On Casemates, you’ll find fresh wine deals three times a week (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), and we’ll be building tools to let you share by-the-case orders with other users near you for better deals than ever. @medz @rjquillin Um, the forum is the tool.
@medz You take 6, they take 6, split!
@mike808 @rjquillin
@mike808 @rjquillin
A good tool would allow me to express interest in purchasing a partial case while remaining anonymous until someone else within a certain range of me also expressed interest. The tool would match us up and process the purchase using the shipping address somehow agreed upon.
@medz @rjquillin I don’t think anyone said there would be good tools, just “tools”.
@medz
Still waiting for those promises.
It’s DIY, but we’re managing with individual forums and a whole lotta chatter.
In for two cases, no questions asked
/giphy exhausted-mummified-bead
Since I live in one of the 19 prohibited states, this is a real “meh” for me.
@magiteck Especially annoying as my state normally has no problem with casemates’ wine.
If only I could buy alcohol online in my state.
For two weeks now, my kids have been w(h)ining enough for everyone. P is for Pass.
@daveinwarsh that’s awesome.
POPSOCKETS! SPROCKETS! DAVY CROCKETT! AWESOME!
@daveinwarsh Yep, meh doesn’t know they’re dealing with sofistikatted poeple…and no smart replies. You mess with me, and you mess with the whole trailer court.
I think I liked this, but I really don’t remember… Maybe I liked it too much.
I’d like this but apparently Illinois and every state bordering it is forbidden. Cool
@wyk3d Not every bordering state. (I’m in Missouri and got it.)
@wyk3d How is it Minnesota can get this offer, yet the rest of the Midwest cannot?
@dave congrats to you good sir on your triumph.
@rtjhnstn @wyk3d As a resident of that fine state, I am surprised too. Knowing that we finally allowed liquor stores to sell on Sundays, I would have thought the liquor lobbyists would have pressured to disallow internet sales of the sweet nectar of the gods.
@404Error @rtjhnstn @wyk3d Could be that tgr Illanoyances wanted extortion money for an import license to raise money for the state deficit or to protect the states wine industry using the same tactics as the milk and beef industries (why you never see coupons on milk or cut meat.)
@wyk3d broken earth wine is actually based in Long Grove, IL. I’m guessing that plays in to the prohibition here (Illinois, that is)
Why can Casemates ship to WI but you guys can’t?
@dasred It depends on the winery. Each deal on Casemates is still limited by the winery’s licenses with each state. So if you cant get it, reach out to your local state congress-critter and tell them what you think about “burdensome” red tape in the state’s wine licensing, and like good conservative business-friendly free-market loving 'Muricans, they need to get rid of those “big gubmint” laws ASAP.
@dasred @mike808 The original offering of this shipped to Illinois. What’s different this time. I wanted another case.
Why didn’t you use a question mark. Are you stupid.
Jeez @warpedrotors, leave @warpedrotors alone! How would you like it if @warpedrotors called YOU stupid.
@demonbane @warpedrotors Now don’t go setting him off again - use the damn question mark!!

Yup, that’s what it was like. Giphy for the win.

@rpstrong @stolicat That may not work for alcohol. laws are pretty strict there
@spitfire6006006 @stolicat I should have specified that it was, in fact, a wine shipment.
@rpstrong @stolicat huh. I guess they really have relaxed things
@rpstrong @spitfire6006006 @stolicat maybe people will realize that all these unnecessary laws and restrictions are actually not needed…right…who the f am I kidding.
@spitfire6006006 @stolicat @TimW Now you’re talking to the Libertarian in me: Unnecessary Regulations
@rpstrong @spitfire6006006 @stolicat same!
@rpstrong @stolicat @TimW Unnecessary restrictions like Not giving wine to children?
@rpstrong @spitfire6006006 @stolicat ask most of Europe about that one.
@rpstrong @spitfire6006006 @stolicat shipping restrictions on wine are only there to keep competition from the big wine and beer makers…they are the ones that push for it. Any politician who says otherwise is either lying or an idiot (or both).
@rpstrong @stolicat @TimW I think we were just talking about requiring signatures to deliver it
@rpstrong @spitfire6006006 @stolicat you’re right…my bad! My brain took a leap that was not in the conversation here.
Honestly, I’m still holding out hope for a craft beer version of Casemates. I’m not much of a wine drinker, but some good weekly affordable craft beer selections delivered right to my house? Yes, please! Send a firkin!
I’m curious why no shipping to Iowa? Case-mate’s ships to Iowa.
@yellowfellow cause of what happened at the caucus
@yellowfellow because if you rearrange the letters in ‘iowa’, it doesn’t spell anything fun.

/giphy loud-euphoric-change
When did Iowa get on the prohibition list?
CT here. Wanted to buy, can’t buy. Meh.
Back to drinking my beer i guess.
Can’t ship to MI? Boooooo!
No IL either
@jchizmar I tried also. What else do we have to do while we’re quarantined? This would have helped me get through the next 4 weeks.
/giphy dark-tricky-pine
@wmhatch Has there ever been a more apropos giphy?
I think not.
Why can’t you ship to IL? I purchase this on casemates.
QPR should be a blue and white striped wine. Liverpool or Arsenal would make a better name for a red wine.
Is it sweet by chance?
@Peaches27055 Reviewers lean toward ‘off dry’ or ‘fruit forward’, but not notably sweet. I’m hoping to snag a VMP case this afternoon.
This is cheaper here on Meh than it was on Casemates! Originally this sold for $55/$90. A case of decent wine for $80 here… fuhgeddaboudit!
This might be why it isn’t offered in as many states as it did when it was on Casemates. The winery’s licenses in those states expired and they didn’t renew them and Meh took the leftovers from casemates to offer here today with whatever state’s wine-by-mail licenses were still valid.
Figures it still won’t ship to CT.
My favorite " ‘aroma’ tasting note" on Casemates to date:
pencil shavings
Nothing gets me clicking to buy faster than the idea that my wine will smell like a glass of second grade surprise quizzes.
What the? Illinois is a state that wine can be shipped to but I can’t buy this?!?
@hunter7411 each winery has to get licenses for direct sales. My guess is that the one for IL expired or lapsed before Meh took the leftovers from Casemates.
/giphy restricted-aspiring-minister
Perfect timing, I finished my last bottle yesterday!
Since I have 1000 packs of spaghetti and sauce for the coronavirus lockdown, if it doesn’t taste great, it will spruce up my Ragu!
@hyperspectral Good plan!
I can’t be visibly intoxicated when it’s delivered? That’s the whole reason I need to to bring it to me! I can’t drive like this.
@akparker777
Currently UPS isn’t even getting close enough to see a DL, much less ask for a sig…
I can’t see any downside to this. If I don’t like it, I’ll just use it to barter for toilet paper. The results have to be better than the ones I had trying to barter all the Bluetooth speakers I’ve bought here.
At this price point, figured I would surprise my bonus daughter and her roommates in NYC.
/giphy humdrum-swift-brass
@DebRVA what’s a bonus daughter?? Did you have a kid and the hospital threw her in for free? Two for one special…
@shrike1201 She is my husband’s daughter, lol. I just like “bonus” better than “step”.
I bought a case of this off Casemates when it was first offered. What I can tell you is that I remember very little about them, which implies to me that it was neither outstanding or horrible. @sammydog01 it’s paused. I assume it’s so they can add shipping to Illinois and then just send me a case.
@warpedrotors It’s paused for VMPs. Shhhh- that’s supposed to be a secret. Have any friends in Minnesota?

@BuddTX Likely once the temperature gets over 85, so they’ll be nice and warm during shipping.
@BuddTX According to what I see at the bottom of the specs: “Estimated Delivery
Monday, April 20th - Wednesday, April 22nd”
Looks like we’ll be seeing it arrive sometime next week.
@BuddTX yeah I’m starting to wonder if these are coming
while i was here checking the status and seeing if anyone else hadn’t gotten theirs, i got an email that says it shipped. weird!

mine just arrived. eventually, I will tell you what the person who actually drinks wine thought of it.
Received the QPR Select via UPS yesterday. Opened a bottle today and it was absolutely delicious… Best Meh purchase I’ve ever made!
