@andymand@heartny@shadowgaurd@SputnikHQ Dammit, too late for me. My Pixel got a stupid black screen of death of which I have no clue how to fix, so I bought an iPhone 11 just so I could use the airtags for an upcoming trip. I really don’t like this iPhone. I dislike the haptics, the way my fingers cannot seem to hit the right keys in a text message. Biggest deal issue is that I can sidemount tracking blockers on Firefox in Android but cannot with an iPhone. Security better with an iPhone, not so much…
@heartny@shadowgaurd Glad I read that here, otherwise I might have tried these. Bet that right there alone is why they’re on Meh…they ignored the other half of the market!
@lonocat Nope. Documentation I’ve read says it still works and I’ve had no issues with the one that’s been in my RFID-blocking wallet for nearly a week.
Of course. My terrible timing strikes again. Just bought a 3-pack @ $30/card ($90 total). Had them for almost a week now and they’ve been working well. They don’t have the ultra wideband tracking that the AirTags have for the “radar tracking” when you’re close by, but they show up perfectly well in the Find My app. Might have to pick up a couple more.
I like my key holder made by these folks. Also left my wallet somewhere recently and had a scare, even though I got it back shortly after. I have wanted to have something in my wallet, because the AirTag doesn’t fit. I didn’t realize this product was available. I’m down to try these at the buy one, get one free price point.
The person I know who needs this the most is a Luddite who has only the most rudimentary cell phone, and it’s not an iPhone, and he only got it a few months ago. Some people are hard to help.
No one click this link and if you buy them report back for when they come back; they will be kept nourished by feeding on pixel tracrs while in the warehouse.
So wait, could I hide this on my bike and use it to track the bike down if stolen? I’m feeling dumb and don’t understand the range or how it tells me where it is.
@stephenobent Yes, this could do that. The KeySmart card (or any Find My device) announces its ID over bluetooth radio every 2 seconds. Any nearby iPhone that “hears” the announcement will then report back to Apple’s servers with the time and iPhone’s location when it heard the card’s bluetooth announcement (it’s within bluetooth range, but not precisely the card’s location). Apple’s servers knows how to match that ID with the registered owner who can then check the location using the Find My app or we b site.
To help preserve privacy, the card changes its ID on a regular basis and an iPhone that hears it reports the time & location using the device’s public key so that only the registered owner can view that data later.
@mwarren@stephenobent My S.O. tracks my progress on long trips driving interstate via the air tag for the keys to his car. There are apparently more than enough iPhones that get within reach of the air tag while I’m on the road to keep that position pretty well updated in real time.
Definitely about size and not price point. AirTags go on sale 4/$80 so the price is the same. A wallet, where you desire the space saving, is the only place where I see this to be an advantage. AirTag batteries last longer, though they’re not rechargeable and the ability to pinpoint exact location is better. They do make wallets with built in AirTag holders but they’re always going to be thicker. So for once, the lack of girth has a slight advantage here for that one application.
Let me first say, I feel so sorry for you people. But I just don’t understand the need to put a tracking device on my keys or wallet. And yes, I’m a Gen-X, “responsible adult” (shudder)…
I use it my wallet airtag about once a month when I lose my wallet somewhere in my house. It can save 15 minutes of searching. But, I can’t say as I’ve ever lost my keys or wallet outside my house.
I also have an airtag on my luggage, which is nice when I’m flying to know if my luggage is with me or not.
@ETFrisco Don’t feel sorry for “you people”, brace yourself! I’m a competent, responsible boomer (71), put my wallet, car keys in the same place all the time so I know where they are (necessarily), usually as soon as I get home. If I have them on the way out the door, but remember something else I need to do first so set them down, I may then spend a few minutes or more hunting around pissed off because I had them in my hands on the way to the car. If you’re lucky, it’s likely in your future. Just sayin’!
@ETFrisco Perhaps the more responsible thing here is people aware that they are not always perfect and are putting into position safety nets for when their usually responsible selfs have an unexpected situation happen. Gatekeeping responsibility is weird, anyway.
@ETFrisco@krmugn52 Yep, same here. My keys and wallet are ALWAYS in one of 3 places: in the pocket of the pants that I am wearing, in my hand or whatever device that they unlock while in use, or in a specific container on a specific shelf in my closet. The one time I lost my wallet, I know exactly where and when (fell out of my pocket in late 1985, but it was/is inaccessible).
@jhclouse The state of California is known to the state of California to contain substances that can cause cancer, reproductive harm, and other unspecified diseases. No, the state of California will not tell you what they are, where they are, what they do, or what you can do about it. This is because they do not know. And they don’t want to know. So there.
I bought one for $40 from Amazon in December. It works well. The only downside I could tell vs Airtags is it seems slightly more likely to alert me I left it behind when I did not. But I’d rather false positives than miss out on an actual missing thing.
If you’re in the Apple universe already, this is a lot better than when I was jamming a full Airtag into my wallet. And the Qi charging is nicer than the annoying unscrew method of Airtags, though I don’t know that I’ve had to charge mine since December.
Disclaimer - You probably shouldn’t believe me, because I’m hugely biased to get you to buy these. It’s literally my job. But even still:
Seems neat. I like that is can wirelessly charge. I don’t think I really need it, but I feel this is just the type of thing I’d buy just because it is techy. I guess being an android user just saved me $40.
Just a warning. Keeping this in a wallet in a flex pocket is an awful idea. the battery on mine was swelling the other day after about 3 months of use; likely due to me sitting on it at times.

I wonder if these can be modified to work with that one crazy idea I have.
@yakkoTDI maybe, but remember that you’ve got to get right up in front of the tornado for them to release properly
@djslack Make that two crazy ideas.
@djslack @yakkoTDI You win the Internet for today.
Another way the government will track me…I gotta go buy more tinfoil to block the tracking waves
so… does not work with android?
@shadowgaurd Sadly, Amazon description says, “Does not work with Android devices.”
@heartny @shadowgaurd Amazon racist against android
@heartny @shadowgaurd @SputnikHQ I’m excited to see the rollout of the (initially few) new devices which will work with Android’s version of the Find My Device network: https://blog.google/products/android/android-find-my-device/ (Which, if I understand the concept, should finally put Android on par with the Apple-flavored alternative…)
@shadowgaurd Save money. Don’t buy a new phone. I have about 90 trackers you can have instead… just sayin’
@heartny @shadowgaurd Thank god. Just saved me $80.
@shadowgaurd The current gen is compatible with both Android and IOS, and it’s $40 at Best Buy.
(I ordered one last night, whoops. Guess I’ll be ghosting BBY.)
Chipolo also makes a non-rechargeable guy in separate Android and IOS flavors. I think it’s $35.

Oh Boy!! It’s the new-fangled TrackR Pixel for future IRK’s!!
/giphy YAY!!
Will the RFID blocking in my wallet cancel this out?
@lonocat I think it will create a black hole

@lonocat Nope. Documentation I’ve read says it still works and I’ve had no issues with the one that’s been in my RFID-blocking wallet for nearly a week.
Good grief!

My wallet is on the back of my phone. Kinda defeats the use case for this.
How do I know when the battery is low?
@hchavers
When your phone is missing for 5 months…
So wait, could I hide this on my bike and use it to track the bike down if stolen? I’m feeling dumb and don’t understand the range or how it tells me where it is.

An AirTag, however, might be better to hide on a bicycle as there are many more plastic do-dads designed to attach an AirTag to a bicycle. Also, when searching for an AirTag, the iPhone can use the ultrawideband U1 chip to more precisely locate an AirTag.

As a side note some employee ID cards track you.
Not that I would consider one of these but I do have to wonder if it would work in a wallet that blocks RF?
@Feenix3 someone above says theirs does.
No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die.
I sure am glad the state of California told me it has BPA in it. That could be a real problem if I ever decided to eat it.

heck yeah. I just bought airtags and was looking at modifying one for my wallet but this saves me a step and headache.

@blandoon More the contents than the wallet itself, tbh
I have one of these, and gave some to my parents. They work pretty well!
the top of my head feels tender
Based on the Amazon reviews, sounds like these will be really cool for about 5 months. Bummer. I really wanted to want these.
